Abstract:Efficient utilization of electrostatic charges is paramount for numerous applications, from printing to kinetic energy harvesting. However, existing technologies predominantly focus on the static qualities of these charges, neglecting their dynamic capabilities as carriers for energy conversion. Herein, we report a paradigm-shifting strategy that orchestrates the swift transit of surface charges, generated through contact electrification, via a freely moving droplet. This technique ingeniously creates a besptengngoke charged surface which, in tandem with a droplet acting as a transfer medium to the ground, facilitates targeted charge displacement and amplifies electrical energy collection. The spontaneously generated electric field between the charged surface and needle tip, along with the enhanced water ionization under the electric field, proves pivotal in facilitating controlled charge transfer. By coupling the effects of charge self-transfer, contact electrification, and electrostatic induction, a dual-electrode droplet-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (DD–TENG) is designed to harvest the water-related energy, exhibiting a two-order-of-magnitude improvement in electrical output compared to traditional single-electrode systems. Our strategy establishes a fundamental groundwork for efficient water drop energy acquisition, offering deep insights and substantial utility for future interdisciplinary research and applications in energy science.
Continuous Droplet-Actuating Platforms via an Electric Field Gradient: Electrowetting and Liquid Dielectrophoresis

Abstract:This work develops a technology for actuating droplets of any size without the requirement for high voltages or active control systems, which are typically found in competitive systems. The droplet actuation relies on two microelectrodes separated by a variable gap distance to generate an electrostatic gradient. The physical mechanism for the droplet motion is a combination of liquid dielectrophoresis and electrowetting. Investigating the system behavior as a function of the driving frequency identified the relative contribution of these two mechanisms and the optimum operating conditions. A fixed signal frequency of 0.5 kHz actuated various liquids and contaminants. Droplet actuation was demonstrated on several platforms, including linear, radial-symmetric, and bilateral-symmetric droplet motion. The electrode designs are scalable and can be fabricated on a flexible and optically transparent substrate: these key advancements will enable consumer applications that were previously inaccessible. A self-cleaning platform was also tested under laboratory conditions and on the road. This technology has significant potential in microfluidics and self-cleaning platforms, for example, in the automotive sector to clean body parts, camera covers, and sensors.

Abstract:Various efforts have been made to manipulate droplet transport. However, it is still limited by path reconfiguration and platform complexity. Here, the efficient manipulation of droplets is based on liquid‐solid contact electrification and triboelectric‐wetting on common dielectric surfaces. The pre‐charged module adjusted the EDL through asymmetric ions and combined with the functional module composed of the triboelectric field to manipulate the droplet motion behavior. This flexible and modular functional decoupling control strategy exhibited excellent collective performance and promoted its application in chemical analysis and intelligent sensing. Programmed droplet transport which is typically directed by surface energy gradients or external fields, is crucial in domains ranging from chemical reaction modulation to self‐powered intelligent sensing. However, droplet motion control remains constrained by path reconfiguration, requirements on chemical surface modification, and platform complexity. Here, a more universal plug‐and‐play droplet manipulation paradigm based on liquid‐solid contact electrification and triboelectricwetting on common dielectric surfaces is reported. By regulating the electrical double layer via asymmetric ion dynamics, the triboelectric charge polarity of droplets can be adjusted, enabling in situ manipulation without path reconfiguration dictated by the conventional droplet motion output. Droplets achieved an ultrahigh velocity of 450 mm s−1 on general surfaces, significantly exceeding the speeds observed in droplets subjected to constant electrostatic fields with chemical modifications. This flexible and modular functionally decoupled manipulation strategy offers an environmentally friendly, cost‐effective, and versatile paradigm, facilitating applications in chemical analysis and smart sensing.

Universal droplet propulsion by dynamic surface-charge wetting

Abstract:Controllable droplet propulsion on solid surfaces plays a crucial role in various technologies. Many actuating methods have been developed; however, there are still some limitations in terms of the introduction of additives, the versatilities of solid surfaces, and the speed of transportation. Herein, we have demonstrated a universal droplet propulsion method based on dynamic surface-charge wetting by depositing oscillating and opposite surface charges on dielectric films with unmodified surfaces. Dynamic surface-charge wetting propels droplets by continuously inducing smaller front contact angles than rear contact angles. This innovative imbalance is built by alternately storing and spreading opposite charges on dielectric films, which results in remarkable electrostatic forces under large gradients and electric fields. The method exhibits excellent droplet manipulation performance characteristics, including high speed (~130 mm/s), high adaptability of droplet volume (1 μL-1 mL), strong handling ability on non-slippery surfaces with large contact angle hysteresis (CAH) (maximum angle of 35°), significant programmability and reconfigurability, and low mass loss. The great application potential of this method has been effectively demonstrated in programmable microreactions, defogging without gravity assistance, and surface cleaning of photovoltaic panels using condensed droplets.
Electric-Field-Induced Selective Directed Transport of Diverse Droplets

Abstract:Droplet directional transport is one of the central topics in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications. Selective transport of diverse droplets, particularly in another liquid phase environment with controlled directions, is still challenging. In this work, we propose an electric-field gradient-driven droplet directional transport platform facilitated by a robust lubricant surface. On the platform, we clearly demonstrated a liquid-inherent critical frequency-dominated selective transport of diverse droplets and a driving mechanism transition from electrowetting to liquid dielectrophoresis. Enlightened by the Kelvin-Helmholtz theory, we first realize the directional droplet transport in another liquid phase whenever a permittivity difference exists. Co-transport of multiple droplets and various combinations of droplet types, as well as multifunctional droplet transport modes, are realized based on the presented powerful electric-field gradient-driven platform, overcoming the limitations of the surrounding environment, liquid conductivity, and intrinsic solid-liquid wetting property existing in traditional droplet transport strategies. This work may inspire new applications in liquid separation, multiphase microfluidic manipulation, chemical reagent selection, and so on.

Abstract:A new optical‐thermal‐electrical platform for droplet manipulation with the pyroelectric crystal surface parallel to the polarization axis achieves multiplex behaviors involving lossless transportation, positioning, rapid mixing, and precise splitting, which offers a promising strategy for well‐controlled manipulation of liquids and is expected to possess a broader application in chemical and biomedical areas. The light‐excited droplet manipulation is crucial in diverse industrial and health domains, owning to the merits of real‐time control and noncontact operation. However, strong driving forces and high‐precision maneuverability for splitting or mixing are still the challenges. Here a novel concept of configurating pyroelectric crystal surface is put forward to carry out multifunctional manipulation of the droplet by optical‐thermal‐electrical effect. Dipole‐like electric charge distribution is excited around the light spot to generate sharper inversion of electric field gradient and 10‐fold stronger dielectrophoretic (DEP) force than conventional photopyroelectric approaches. Both the stable mode and metastable‐oscillation mode are found and can be positively used to make on‐demand sliding and inside mixing of droplets. Especially, various droplets with the surface tension ranging from 25.7 to 85.4 mN m−1 can be split by light. The present droplet manipulation technique demonstrates its promising applications in cargo transportation, combinatorial chemistry and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:Droplet detachment from solid surfaces is an essential part of many industrial processes. Electrowetting is a versatile tool for handling droplets in digital microfluidics, not only on plain surface but also in 3-D manner. Here, we report for the first time droplet trampolining using electrowetting. With the information collected by the real-time capacitor sensing system, we are able to synchronize the actuation signal with the spreading of the droplet upon impacting. Since electrowetting is applied each time the droplet impacts the substrate and switched off during recoiling of the droplet, the droplet gains additional momentum upon each impact and is able to jump higher during successive detachment. We have modelled the droplet trampolining behavior with a periodically driven harmonic oscillator, and the experiments showed sound agreement with theoretical predictions. The findings from this study will offer valuable insights to applications that demands vertical transportation of the droplets between chips arranged in parallel, or detachment of droplets from solid surfaces.

Abstract:Directional fluid transport by electrowetting is an effective method for fluid management both on Earth and in the space environment. Exact control of the process is always hard because the fundamental dynamics of fluid flow and interface are not well understood. In this study, we examine the process of a sensible droplet transported directionally in an electrowetting channel. The electrodes of the channel are programmed to actuate the droplet at the most effective manner. We build a numerical model based on the phase field method, and a dynamic contact angle model is incorporated in the model. Based on simulated results, the basic process of droplet deformation and motion is explained. Three different stages are observed when the droplet starts to move in the electrowetting channel. The droplet can be transported at a high velocity of 17 mm/s at a voltage of V = 80 V. A wide range of influence factors, including voltage, droplet size, friction factor, pinning force, channel height, gravity level, and tilted angle of the channel, are considered. The contact line friction increases almost linearly with the contact line friction coefficient and the pinning force, both retarding the motion of the droplet at parabolic relations. With an increase in the gravity level, the transport velocity of large droplet decreases. However, the droplet smaller than the capillary length shows quite good anti-gravity capability, which can be transported smoothly even when the channel is tilted by 90° in a normal gravity.

Abstract:Fast and programmable transport of liquid droplets on a solid substrate is desirable in microfluidic, thermal, biomedical, and energy devices. Past research has focused on designing substrates with asymmetric structures or gradient wettability where droplet behaviors are passively controlled, or by applying external electric, thermal, magnetic, or acoustic stimuli that either require the fabrication of electrodes or a strong applied field. In this work, we demonstrate tunable and programmable droplet motion on liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) and inside solid-surface capillary channels using low-intensity light and photo-responsive surfactants. When illuminated by the light of appropriate wavelengths, the surfactants can reversibly change their molecular conformation thereby tuning interfacial tensions in a multi-phase fluid system. This generates a Marangoni flow that drives droplet motions. With two novel surfactants that we synthesized, we demonstrate fast linear and complex 2D movements of droplets on liquid surfaces, on LIS, and inside microchannels. We also visualized the internal flow pattern using tracer particles and developed simple scaling arguments to explain droplet-size-dependent velocity. The method demonstrated in this study serves as a simple and exciting new approach for the dynamic manipulation of droplets for microfluidic, thermal, and water harvesting devices.

Abstract:Directed transport and control of droplets is essential for many modern technologies. Here, we propose an active control mode that combines corona discharge and contact electrification to efficiently drive the droplet or droplet group in a directed manner. In particular, we also implement a continuous coalescence of droplets, similar to dominoes. Moreover, due to the high adhesion effect caused by contact electrification, the droplet can stick on a slope without sliding down, even when the corona discharge is turned off. Interestingly, it can easily slide down when a conductor is nearby. Therefore, a droplet climbing, braking, and downhill system can be realized, and the gravitational potential energy stored by the droplet can be effectively regulated by the applied voltage. This work opens the possibility of droplet manipulation in modern applications such as miniaturized energy storage, biochemical medicine, and self-cleaning.

Abstract:A prototype of a programmable electrostatic-based liquid droplet controlling chip with a simple configuration is presented, consisting of Si used as the substrate, heavy doped poly-silicon as the microelectrode array, a SiO2 film as the dielectric layer and a fluorocarbon polymer film as the hydrophobic layer. It overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional continuous flow system and the limitation of laminar flow conditions. By controlling the sequence of voltage pulses applied to the microelectrode array under the dielectric layer, droplets on the surface of the hydrophobic layer can be quickly transported and mixed. The rapid transportation of the deionized droplet with about 0.9 mu L was successfully achieved in air by applying the voltage pulse of 30 V, and the transportation speed reached 24 mm/s. The quick mixing between the deionized droplet with about 0.8 mu L and the 0.0001 mol/L rhodamine droplet with about 1.4 mu L was successfully carried out in 7/30 s by applying the voltage pulse of 40 V, and the several methods for enhancement mixing were researched, including increasing the transportation speed of the droplets and enhancing the oscillation of the mixed droplet.

Abstract:In the recent years, there has been a growing interest in droplet-based (digital) microfluidics for which, reliable means of droplet manipulation are required. In this study we demonstrate thermal actuation of droplets on liquid platforms, which is ideal for biochemical microsystems and lab-on-chip applications because droplets can be transported with high speed, good control and minimal thermal loading as compared to using conventional solid substrates. In addition, other disadvantages of using solid surfaces such as evaporation, contamination, pinning, hysteresis and irreversibility of droplet motion are avoided. Based on the theoretical development and measurements, a silicon-based droplet transportation platform was developed with embedded Titanium micro heaters. A shallow liquid pool of inert liquid (FC-43) served as the carrier liquid. Heaters were interfaced with control electronics and driven through a computer graphical user interface. By creating appropriate spatio-temporal thermal gradient maps, transport of droplets on predetermined pathways was successfully demonstrated with high level of robustness, speed and reliability. The video shows normal imaging of droplet manipulation accompanied by the corresponding infrared thermal imaging showing the spatio-temporal temperature maps and the outline of the drop as it moves towards hot spots.

Abstract:<p>Dynamic control of liquid wetting behavior on smart surfaces has attracted considerable concern owing to their important applications in directional motion, confined wetting and selective separation. Despite much progress in this regard, there still remains challenges in dynamic liquid droplet manipulation with fast response, no loss and anti‐contamination. Herein, a strategy to achieve dynamic droplet manipulation and transportation on the electric field adaptive superhydrophobic elastomer surface is demonstrated. The superhydrophobic elastomer surface is fabricated by combining the micro/nanostructured clusters of hydrophobic TiO<sub>2</sub> nanoparticles with the elastomer film, on which the micro/nanostructure can be dynamically and reversibly tuned by electric field due to the electric field adaptive deformation of elastomer film. Accordingly, fast and reversible transition of wetting state between Cassie state and Wenzel state and tunable adhesion on the surface via electric field induced morphology transformation can be obtained. Moreover, the motion states of the surface droplets can be controlled dynamically and precisely, such as jumping and pinning, catching and releasing, and controllable liquid transfer without loss and contamination. Thus this work would open the avenue for dynamic liquid manipulation and transportation, and gear up the broad application prospects in liquid transfer, selective separation, anti‐fog, anti‐ice, microfluidics devices, etc.</p>

Abstract:External field driven fluid manipulation, in particular electric field, offers the advantages of real-time control and exceptional flexibility, rendering it highly promising for applications in microfluidic devices, liquid separation and energy catalysis. However, it is still challenging for controlled liquid transport and fine control of droplet splitting. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to achieve direction-controlled liquid transport and fine droplet splitting on an anisotropic groove-microstructured electrode surface via an electrically switched asymmetric interface. The balance of asymmetric capillary force generated by microstructures and electro-capillary force is critical in determining directional liquid transport and fine droplet splitting. Asymmetric bubbles generated by liquid electrolysis form an asymmetric liquid–gas–solid interface and result in gradient liquid wetting behavior on the two neighboring electrode surfaces. The electric field further enhances the asymmetric wetting of a liquid droplet on the electrode surface, exhibiting electric field direction-dependent motion. Moreover, the groove-microstructured electrode surface can strengthen the liquid droplet anisotropic wetting and correspondingly refine the volume range of the splitting sub-droplet. Even unidirectional/bidirectional liquid droplet transport can be controlled in collaboration with the asymmetric groove-microstructure and electric field. Thus, this work provides a new route for liquid transport and droplet splitting, showing great potential in controllable separation, microreaction and microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Spatiotemporally controllable droplet manipulation is essential in diverse applications, ranging from thermal management to microfluidics and water harvesting. Despite considerable advances, droplet manipulation without surface or droplet pretreatment is still challenging in terms of response and functional adaptability. Here, a droplet ultrasonic tweezer (DUT) based on phased array is proposed for versatile droplet manipulation. The DUT can generate a twin trap ultrasonic field at the focal point for trapping and maneuvering the droplet by changing the position of the focal point, which enables a highly flexible and precise programmable control. By leveraging the acoustic radiation force resulting from the twin trap, the droplet can pass through a confined slit 2.5 times smaller than its own size, cross a slope with an inclination up to 80°, and even reciprocate in the vertical direction. These findings provide a satisfactory paradigm for robust contactless droplet manipulation in various practical settings including droplet ballistic ejection, droplet dispensing, and surface cleaning.

Abstract:Manipulating droplets by light in microscale allows precise control of microfluidics, liquid delivery, micromachines, and so on. Among these applications, microfluidic technology is of particular interest for miniaturization of the portable analysis systems, which require the integration of various liquid operations in one device. Here, a photodeformable microfluidic platform is constructed by combining Laplace pressure and capillary condensation to integrate the transportation, fusion, separation, and mixing of liquid slugs in one chip. The Laplace pressure, attributed to the photodeformation of the liquid crystal polymers, is generated to propel the slug. The capillary condensation is introduced by the delicate design of the fluid channels, allowing the fusion and separation of slugs without any connected microvalves. Catalytic oxidation reaction and protein detection processes are realized in the platform, which are amenable to a variety of miniaturized bio-medical applications, such as portable analysis and point of care testing.

Abstract:We propose an electro-hydrodynamics model to describe the dynamic evolution of a slender drop containing a dilute ionic surfactant on a naturally wettable surface, with a varying external electric field. This unified model reproduces fundamental microfluidic operations controlled by electrical signals, including dewetting, rewetting, and droplet shifting. In this paper, lubrication theory analysis and numerical simulations illustrate how to electrically control the wettability of surface via the charged surfactant. Our numerical results show that electric field promotes dewetting by attracting ionic surfactants onto the transition thin-film region and promotes rewetting by attracting them away from the region.

Novel Open-Structure Droplets Actuating Chip

Abstract:A novel open-structure discrete droplets actuation based on Electrowetting-on-dielectric is presented, consisting of heavy doped poly-silicon used as the microelectrode array, the complex layer of the SiO_2 film and the fluorocarbon polymer film as the hydrophobic dielectric layer, the suspended silicon-aluminum line as the ground electrode. By controlling the sequence of voltage pulses applied to the microelectrode array under the dielectric layer, droplets on the surface of the hydrophobic layer could be manipulated. Owing to the suspended-line structure, the transportation of droplet was successfully achieved in air by applying the voltage pulse of 40V.
