Abstract:Controlling morphology of liquids on solid surfaces plays an important role in both fundamental research and practical applications. We found that, the shape of the liquid after contact between a droplet and a surface could be tuned by designing the hydrophilic micropillar arrays forming this surface. Such a wetting behavior is a result of imbibition in the micropillars, leading to specific final spreading distance and pattern of the droplet. During the spreading, the morphology of the droplet is controlled by both the arrangement and shape of the micropillars. The experimental results indicated that the surface energy barriers caused by the micropillar edges was a key factor accounting for the anisotropic spreading of the liquid. Moreover, the shape of the meniscus at the front location of the spreading liquid was rebuilt based on computational simulation, which agreed well with the experimental data. Interesting, the time-dependence of the displacement of the liquid transport at the edges was found to be different from that of a wicking film. Theoretical models were accordingly proposed to reveal the shape formation of liquids on such micropillar-structured surfaces.

Abstract:Functional surface with specific wettability is one of the indispensable means for droplet manipulation.In recent years,the photo-responsive functional surface with changeable wettability has developed fast.By inducing wetting gradient force,mechanical deformation,phase transformation,dielectric electrophoresis force and electro wettability alteration on the material surface,the behavior of the droplets can be controllably manipulated by the photo-responsive functional surface.In this paper,the development of the photo-responsive functional surface for the droplet manipulation was briefly reviewed.The principles and mechanisms of the droplet manipulation with the functional surface had been expatiated.The categories,structural characteristics and corresponding preparation techniques of the functional surface were analyzed and summarized.In addition,the applications of the photoresponsive functional surface in droplet transportation,fusion,fission,liquid robot,and fluidic chips were introduced in detail.The development tendency and potential applications of the photo-responsive droplet manipulation functional surface were prospected in combination with the characteristics of the functional surface.

Abstract:Photothermal slippery surface has broad applications in many research fields for noncontacting, loss-free, and flexible droplet manipulation capability. In this work, with specific morphologic parameters and modified base materials doped by Fe3O4, a high-durability photothermal slippery surface (HD-PTSS) was proposed and implemented based on ultraviolet (UV) lithography to achieve repeatability of more than 600 cycles. The instantaneous response time and transport speed of HD-PTSS were related to near-infrared ray (NIR) powers and droplet volume. Meanwhile, the durability was closely related to the morphology of HD-PTSS, which impacts the recovering of a lubricant layer. The droplet manipulation mechanism of HD-PTSS was discussed in depth, and the Marangoni effect was found to be the key factor for the durability of HD-PTSS.

Abstract:Compared to conventional continuous-flow liquid manipulation, the direct control of liquid droplets on an open surface prevents the potential cross contamination during liquid transfer, which is advantageous for biological microliquids. However, the fabrication techniques of smart surfaces and the fast manipulation of droplets remotely remain difficult, limiting its practical application. Herein, large-scaled photoresponsive superhydrophobic mats fabricated by the electrospinning of linear liquid crystal polymer are presented. Upon the alternated irradiation of UV-vis light, these mats exhibit significant, fast, and reversible change of adhesion, while their surfaces maintain the superhydrophobicity. Therefore, the water droplets can be pinned at any directed point on the mat surface after the fast superhydrophobic adhesion switch by the remote control of light. It is expected that the active manipulation of discrete droplets on an open surface through these photoresponsive mats provides a new concept for microdroplet manipulation, allowing for minimal reactions among biological samples.

Abstract:Flexible control of droplet transportation is crucial in various applications but constrained by liquid-solid friction. The development of biomimetic lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces provides a new solution to flexible manipulation of droplet transportation. Herein, a light strategy is reported for flexibly controlling droplet transportation on photosensitive lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces. Owing to the localized heating effect of a focused laser beam via photothermal conversion, the resultant thermal Marangoni flow and horizontal component of the surface tension associated with the asymmetric wetting ridges are together responsible for actuating droplet transportation. It is found that the the asymmetry of the wetting ridge is dominated by the thickness of the infused oil layer, which directly affects the droplet transportation. The feasibility of this light strategy is also demonstrated by uphill movement, droplet coalescence, and fixed-point chemical reaction. This study provides a new design for potential applications in open droplet microfluidics, analytical chemistry, diagnosis, etc.

Abstract:A new optical‐thermal‐electrical platform for droplet manipulation with the pyroelectric crystal surface parallel to the polarization axis achieves multiplex behaviors involving lossless transportation, positioning, rapid mixing, and precise splitting, which offers a promising strategy for well‐controlled manipulation of liquids and is expected to possess a broader application in chemical and biomedical areas. The light‐excited droplet manipulation is crucial in diverse industrial and health domains, owning to the merits of real‐time control and noncontact operation. However, strong driving forces and high‐precision maneuverability for splitting or mixing are still the challenges. Here a novel concept of configurating pyroelectric crystal surface is put forward to carry out multifunctional manipulation of the droplet by optical‐thermal‐electrical effect. Dipole‐like electric charge distribution is excited around the light spot to generate sharper inversion of electric field gradient and 10‐fold stronger dielectrophoretic (DEP) force than conventional photopyroelectric approaches. Both the stable mode and metastable‐oscillation mode are found and can be positively used to make on‐demand sliding and inside mixing of droplets. Especially, various droplets with the surface tension ranging from 25.7 to 85.4 mN m−1 can be split by light. The present droplet manipulation technique demonstrates its promising applications in cargo transportation, combinatorial chemistry and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:Recently, slippery surfaces with controllable droplet sliding have aroused much attention in both fundamental research and realistic applications. However, for almost all existing surfaces, constant stimuli such as heat, light, magnetic field, etc., are indispensable. Herein, by constructing pit structures on a shape memory polymer and further infusing oil with low surface tension, we report a shape memory slippery surface that can overcome the above imperfection. Based on the shape memory performance, the surface can memorize a diverse pit size as the surface is stretched or recovered. With the variation of pit structure, the sliding performances for both water and organic liquid droplets can be reversibly adjusted between the rolling and pinning states. This work, based on the shape memory effect, reports smart droplet sliding control through regulating the surface microstructure, which not only provides a strategy for droplet sliding control, but also offers some ideas for designing novel intelligent slippery surfaces.
Photoelectric synergistic anisotropic slippery interface for directional droplets manipulation

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive anisotropic slippery surfaces have displayed remarkable performance in directionally manipulating droplet transport behavior. However, most current reported anisotropic slippery materials have been limited to a single response mode, which often fails to satisfy the practical conditions of double or synergetic stimulation in complex environments. Here, an anisotropic photoelectric synergistic responsive paraffin-injected directional oxidized copper foam slippery interface (P/DOC 3 -S) with a low response threshold is reported. Owing to the fast photoelectric response of P/DOC 3 -S, the reversible control of the anisotropic sliding behavior of droplets is realized by remotely switching on and off the photoelectric field. Additionally, through optimizing the structure, the response voltage for P/DOC 3 -S can be reduced to 0.3 V under one sunlight. This work will provide insights into creating new types of smart slippery surfaces, which are potentially useful in microfluidics, directional liquid transportation, the semiconductor industry, and other related fields.

Abstract:Manipulating small water droplets on an intelligent surface with tunable superhydrophobic adhesion has attracted considerable interests because of potential applications ranging from no-loss transfer to surface chemistry but remains challenging. Herein, we present a strategy to manipulate the small water droplet on a photo-switchable mat, which is fabricated by a fluorinated linear liquid crystal polymer via electrospinning. The electrospun mat with hierarchical microstructures exhibits fast and reversible superhydrophobic adhesion change, and still remains the superhydrophobicity after pinning and removing of the water droplets for several times. Diverse erasable and rewritable arrays on the vertically placed mat are formed by pinning the small water droplets to any high adhesive position after localized light irradiation. Moreover, after evaporation of the water droplets containing aggregation-induced emission materials, the mat exhibits bright fluorescence upon faint UV irradiation to indicate the trace with the same pattern as the original droplets. Such photo-switchable superhydrophobic mats would provide an open tunable surface for microdroplets manipulation.

Abstract:Droplet manipulation on superhydrophobic surfaces (DMSS) without conventional pipetting is an emerging liquid handling technology, which can be potentially used for diagnostic, analysis, and synthetic processes. Despite notable progress, controlling droplet motion on superhydrophobic surfaces by contactless acoustic waves is rarely reported. Herein, we report a contactless acoustic tweezer (CAT) for DMSS based on establishing ultrasonic standing wave between an ultrasound transducer (UST) and a superhydrophobic substrate to manipulate droplets without physical contact. The CAT utilizes acoustic radiation forces to trap and move droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces, which allows for precise and controllable movement of droplets by controlling the movement of the UST. Small droplets with volume less than 20 & mu;L can be levitated in mid-air for out-plane manipulation, and large droplets with volume up to 500 & mu;L can be trapped for in-plane manipulation. Experimental results demonstrate the versatility of the CAT for manipulating droplets with various compositions and volumes on various superhydrophobic substrates, offering a versatile and cross-contamination-free liquid handling approach for applications, including but not limited to high-throughput surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract:Smart slippery surfaces with intelligent liquid droplet manipulation performance have aroused much attention. The lubricant and surface microstructure are two key factors that govern the droplet’s sliding performance. However, for almost all existing surfaces, only one factor can be regulated, which significantly limits their wetting performances and applications. Herein, by integrating the temperature-responsive lubricant and shape memory surface microstructure, we report a novel slippery surface. On this surface, the solid/liquid phase transition of the lubricant provides the surface with the ON/OFF control for droplet’s movement between the sliding state and pinning state, and the tunable surface microstructure based on material’s shape memory effect offers the programmable sliding directions. Due to the combined effect, diverse liquid transportation programs with random ON/OFF manner and arbitrary direction were further demonstrated on this surface. This work advances a new slippery surface with controllable lubricant and surface microstructure, which not only provides insights into the design for smart slippery surfaces but also provides a promising material for application in smart control of droplet motion.Graphical abstractA novel shape memory slippery surface is prepared, on which both the lubricant and surface microstructure can be reversibly controlled.

Abstract:Fast and programmable transport of liquid droplets on a solid substrate is desirable in microfluidic, thermal, biomedical, and energy devices. Past research has focused on designing substrates with asymmetric structures or gradient wettability where droplet behaviors are passively controlled, or by applying external electric, thermal, magnetic, or acoustic stimuli that either require the fabrication of electrodes or a strong applied field. In this work, we demonstrate tunable and programmable droplet motion on liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) and inside solid-surface capillary channels using low-intensity light and photo-responsive surfactants. When illuminated by the light of appropriate wavelengths, the surfactants can reversibly change their molecular conformation thereby tuning interfacial tensions in a multi-phase fluid system. This generates a Marangoni flow that drives droplet motions. With two novel surfactants that we synthesized, we demonstrate fast linear and complex 2D movements of droplets on liquid surfaces, on LIS, and inside microchannels. We also visualized the internal flow pattern using tracer particles and developed simple scaling arguments to explain droplet-size-dependent velocity. The method demonstrated in this study serves as a simple and exciting new approach for the dynamic manipulation of droplets for microfluidic, thermal, and water harvesting devices.

Abstract:Controllable wetting surfaces play a significant role in numerous applications such as smart liquid manipulation, lab-on-a-chip, drug delivery, liquid robot, and so on. A novel type of magnetically controllable isotropic/anisotropic slippery surface was prepared by femtosecond laser ablation. The slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) can be switched between an isotropic smooth state and an anisotropic groove state by the magnetic field. The relationship between the sliding property of the SLIPS and the magnetic flux density, water droplet volume, microgroove width, and microgroove height are systematically studied. Passively flexible movement on the isotropic SLIPS and actively directional movement on the anisotropic SLIPS of water droplets were realized. This work provides a fresh understanding of the controllable isotropic/anisotropic SLIPS and reveals great potential in versatile applications which are related to magnetically controllable smart liquid manipulation.

Abstract:Directional droplet transport on functional surfaces with anisotropic wettability has shown great potential applications in various fields such as water harvesting, chemical micro-reaction, and biomedical analysis. However, the in-plane manipulation of the anisotropic droplet motion in more than two directions is still a challenge. Herein, through the fusion of inspirations from rice leaves, butterfly wings and Pitcher plants, we report a tridirectionally anisotropic slippery surface (TASS) with periodic step-like micro grooves for programmable droplet transport. TASS possesses a tridirectional droplet sliding behavior, i.e. , the ultra-slipperiness along the grooves with a sliding angle of ∼ 2°, and the bidirectionally anisotropic sliding perpendicular to the grooves with sliding angle difference up to ∼ 50°, which is caused by the pinning effect of the step edge. Under the assistance of periodic vertical vibration, groove-features and droplet-volume dependent unidirectional droplets transports are realized on horizontally placed TASS, based on which two micro-reactors are designed to control the sequence of droplets merging and subsequent chemical reactions. Additionally, by utilizing the slipperiness ( i.e. , ultra-low sliding angle for liquid droplet) along the grooves simultaneously, programmable droplet transport under vertical vibration is further demonstrated on a tilted TASS. This work will provide a new avenue for the understanding of anisotropic wettability on asymmetric slippery surface, and thus offer a great opportunity to develop advanced interface for multidirectional droplet transport, chemical micro-reactor, etc .

Abstract:Rapid and controllable sliding of droplets on anisotropic superhydrophobic surface has significant meaning in advanced science and technologies, thus being widely studied in recent years. Herewith, we reported a fabrication of micro- and nano- fractal superhydrophobic surface patterned with micro hydrophilic channels using laser direct writing method. The sliding angle of droplets in the direction parallel to the channels is as low as 8°. While, in the perpendicular direction, droplets exhibit rather high sliding angle, even being pinned to the surface that is tilted to fully upright (sliding angle to be 90°). Such significant anisotropic property enables droplets slide along the pre-assigned stripe-shaped patterns rapidly and steadily, when a droplet is released on a slope. The guidance action still works even when the surface is inverted. Consequently, the patterned surface is suitably designed as a novel droplet manipulate device, which easily achieves effective weight lossless transportation of droplets.

Abstract:Significance Droplet manipulation has received great attention and research for its potential applications in various fields. Wettability surfaces, especially tunable wettability surfaces, are efficient way to manipulate the pinning and sliding of droplets. However, these surfaces only demonstrate uniform wettability control behavior and thus were difficult to accurately manipulate droplets to a certain location or multiple locations. In this paper, inspired by the microstructure of stomata distributed on plants, we present programmable wettability arrays for droplets manipulation by using microfluidic emulsification templates. Based on the intelligent composite system, controllable droplet sliding on programmable wettability pathways and effective droplet transfer for printing with mask integration have been demonstrated.

Abstract:A new design of lubricant self‐mediating photothermal slippery surface to achieve sustainable transport and arbitrary split of droplet under the irradiation of NIL even if the lubricant layer is wiped clean, as well as at other man‐made extreme conditions is proposed. This outstanding finding will extend the practical applications of droplet manipulation in microfluidic and biotechnological systems. Designing intelligent slippery surfaces for droplet manipulation is critical for many applications from drug delivery to bio‐analysis, while is of great challenging in sustainability for inescapable wastage of lubricant layer. Herein, an ultrafast lubricant self‐mediating (self‐replenishing/‐absorbing) photothermal slippery surface is designed that achieves sustainable transport of droplet under the irradiation of near infrared light (NIL) even if the lubricant layer is wiped clean completely, as well as at other man‐made extreme conditions. The ultrafast lubricant self‐mediating performance is caused by synergistic effects of interconnection of porous structure and photothermal expansion of the material. When lubricant on surface is lost, photothermal expansion of material can quickly squeeze the lubricant inside the base to flow into and out of the interconnected porous structure to generate a fresh lubricant layer. Attractively, when the NIL is turned off, the rebuilt lubricant layer can be swiftly self‐absorbed into the porous to inhibit unnecessary wastage. Moreover, an arbitrary split of droplet in desired configurations can be achieved by controlling the NIL irradiating route. This sustainable droplet manipulation induced by ultrafast lubricant self‐mediating can be extensively applied in microfluidics and micro‐reactor settings.

Abstract:Hypothesis Perfluorocarbon is commonly used as a coolant, chemical reaction carrier solvent, medical anti-hypoxic agents and blood substitutes. The realization of non-contact complex manipulation of perfluorocarbon liquids is urgently needed in human life and industrial production. However, most liquid-repellent interfaces are ineffective for the transport of ultra-low surface tension perfluorocarbon liquids, and struggle to maintain good durability due to unstable air or oil cushions in the surface. Therefore, preparing surfaces for stable non-contact complex manipulation of ultra-low surface tension droplets remains a challenge. Experiments In this paper, a novel solution, a photothermal responsive droplet manipulation surface based on polydimethylsiloxane brushes, has been reported. On this surface, droplets with different surface tensions (as low as 10 mN/m) can be efficiently manipulated through induced near-infrared light. Notably, this surface maintains its effectiveness after exposure to extreme anthropogenic conditions. Findings The interface effect between perfluorocarbon droplets and polydimethylsiloxane brushes by near-infrared light-induced was investigated in detail. In addition, ultra-low surface tension droplets demonstrate the ability to transport solid particles. The conductive droplets exhibit sophisticated manipulation realizing the controlled switching of smart circuits. This research opens up new possibilities for advancing the capabilities and adaptability of ultralow surface tension droplets in a range of applications.
