Abstract:In order to further study the anti-impact behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthend with externally bonded FRP sheets,a RC beam without stirrups and two FRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups were tested under impact loads and a FRP-strengthened beam was tested under static loads.Test results showed that the antiimpact capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beams significantly increases,especially,when they are strengthened with end anchoraged.Time-histories of impact force,mid-span displacement and strain of longitudinal reinforcement were analyzed,combined with failure modes of specimens,the anti-shear failure mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams without stirrups under impact loading was obtained.It was shown that the failure process is divided into two stages including the shear failure of local part of the beams' mid-span under impact loading,and the subsequent shear failure of the impacted point directing to bearings.The FRP contributions to the beams' shear force-bearings in the two stages were discussed under impact loadin.g,respectively and compared with the theoretical shear force-bearings gained with different design codes.The comparison showed that the FRP-strengthened RC beams' dynamic shear force-bearings under impact loading in both stages are higher than the theoretical values and their shear force-bearings under static loads.Compared with the previous methods to estimate the shear force-bearings of CFRP-to-concrete interfaces under impact loading,the test results provided a reference for reasonably evaluating FRP contributions to FRP-strengthened RC beams' shear strength.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams shear-strengthened with externally bonded carbon fiber-rein forced polymer (CFRP) wraps under low-velocity impact loading was experimentally investigated. Twelve simply supported RC beam specimens classified into two groups according to stirrup ratios of 0 and 0.1% were tested using an instrumented drop-weight impact machine. The main variable was the center-to-center spacing of the CFRP wraps, which was retrofit at three levels from light, to critical, and to heavy strengthening. The dynamic responses of all the specimens are monied and discussed in detail. Effects of the CFRP strip spacing and shear span-depth ratio on dynamic response of beam specimens are analyzed.

Abstract:The paper experimentally investigates the effects of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening arrangements on the failure mechanisms of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams without stirrups under impact loading, as well as the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) contribution to shear strength. Five beams were tested under static loads and 10 beams under impact loads. The failure modes and the shear mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading were obtained. The failure process can be divided into two stages: the shear failure of the local part of the beams adjacent to the midspan section under impact loading; and the subsequent shear failure of the near-support section under reaction force. The test results showed that the arrangement and amount of CFRP as well as impact energy played an important role in the beam dynamic behavior: The CFRP contribution to shear strength at the first stage was discussed and verified by the experimental shear strength considering the strain rate and stress wave propagation effects. A dynamic failure criterion of RC beams was eventually proposed to assess the failure of FRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading.

Abstract:It is an effective way to improve the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members by externally bonded carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) laminates on the soffit of the members. However, there is little investigation on flexural performance of RC beam flexurally strengthened by side-bonded FRP laminates. To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams side-bonded CFRP laminates and the difference of RC beams strengthened by soffit-bonded and side-bonded CFRP laminates, a total of 8 CFRP-strengthened beams and 1 control beam were tested. The experimental results show that: 1) the first crack loads of RC beams strengthened by side-bonded CFRP laminates are much higher than that of RC beams strengthened by soffit-bonded CFRP laminates. The first crack loads of side-bonded CFRP laminates beams improved significantly; 2) Side-bonded and soffit-bonded CFRP laminates have almost the same effect on the flexural stiffness of RC beams strengthened with same quantity of CFRP laminates before tension rebar yielding. However, side-bonded CFRP laminates can affect crack width and crack pattern of the strengthened beams, and the pre-crack stage of RC beam by sidebonded CFRP laminates extended remarkably. 3) different to soffit-bonded CFRP laminates RC beams, side-bonded CFRP laminates cannot improve the first yielding and the ultimate load bearing capacity of RC beams.
Effect of sustaining load level on flexural behavior of RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets

Abstract:The research reported in this paper is to investigate the effects of externally bonded CFRP sheets on flexural performance of beams subjected to different levels of sustaining load. To this end, a series of 16-RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets and 2 control beams were tested, and the theoretical analysis was conducted to explain the experimental phenomena and test results. The experimental parameters include rebar ratio, number of plies of CFRP laminates and sustaining load level at the time of retrofitting. This paper presents a detailed analysis on the sustaining load levels that may have significant influence on the flexural behavior of the strengthened RC beams. Both the experimental and analytical results indicated that the stiffness of all the strengthened beams had been increased evidently as compared to that of the control beams. This phenomenon implies that FRP played an important role to increase the stiffness, thus reduce the deflections of the strengthened beams. The sustaining loads have an obvious effect on the stiffness of the strengthened beams, especially on the average tangent stiffness at post-cracking stage. The experimental and analytical results in this paper are novel, and the findings may be considered for possible adoption into the design codes, also for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets/plates have been gradually used to strengthen the deteriorated steel structures in recent years. The efficiency of the FRP strengthening technique is generally dependent on the bond between the CFRP composites and the steel. A number of research studies developed so far have focused on examining the bond behavior of CFRP-to-steel interface under static loading. In this paper, the dynamic bond behavior of CFRP-to-steel was experimentally investigated through the drop-mass impact test method. Three impact heights were adopted in order to highlight the effect of the loading rate on the bond strength. Experimental findings showed that the strain distribution gradient and the ultimate capacity of the CFRP-to-steel interface under impact loading were larger than those under static loading, and the bond strength was influenced significantly by loading rate, while the effective bond length is insensitive to the impact loading. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis on the improvements of ultimate capacity for CFRP-to-steel interface under impact loading can be deduced considering the influence of strain rate on shear strength of the adhesive. A formula was also proposed to conservatively predict the ultimate capacity of CFRP-to-steel interface under impact loading.

Abstract:A series of 24 reinforced concrete overload beams were tested to study the effect using FRP composites reinforcement.With the value and the times of overload and the ratio of reinforcement as the main change parameters,the damage caused by overload and reinforcement effect was studied.The performance of 12 beams with external flexure reinforcement was compared to that of 12 beams without external reinforcement.The influence of overload on highway bridge members' flexural performance was evaluated.The reinforcement effect of different overload values was compared with each other.The experiment result indicates that increasement rate of reinforcement in ultimate strength is influenced by the value and overload of the percentage of reinforcement.

Abstract:The main goal of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of seismic retrofit using CFRP wrapping in reducing the damage and preventing the failure of RC bridge piers under vehicular impacts. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation on the performance of cantilever CFRP-wrapped circular RC columns under lateral low-velocity impact. To this aim, a total of nine 1/3-scale cantilever columns without axial load, comprising three types of shear-deficient RC columns with different reinforcement layout, were tested in a horizontal collision facility at two different impact velocities. The columns were tested in plain configuration (0 plies) and two wrapped configurations with 2 and 4 plies of CFRP. Generally, for plain columns, brittle shear-type damage was observed. Larger damage was obtained by increasing the impact velocity and decreasing the amount of transverse reinforcements while the variation of the amount of longitudinal steel bars has a negligible effect. The experimental results demonstrate that seismic retrofit using CFRP can provide an effective solution to convert the failure mechanism under lateral impact loading, from shear- to flexural-dominated, with a reduction of the impact damage. This strategy has a beneficial effect given sufficient bending capacity of the plain RC column.

Abstract:Many flexural or tensile reinforced concrete members must be crack-free or the crack widths must be within specified limit value at service load levels. Presently, there are a number of structure members cannot satisfy its designed serviceability, due to the degradation of structural materials (due to durability problems) or by an increase in design loads. The use of bonding CFRP sheets on the side surfaces for strengthening or repair existing RC beamsis proposed to investigate the first crack strength and the cracking characteristics of RC beams. In order to verify the effectiveness of this application, experimental tests on six strengthened beams and one control beamhad been carried out. Experimental results demonstrated that this appears, a promising technique both on improving the first crackstrength and on suppressing the crack width.
Dynamic Bond Behavior Of Gfrp Sheet-Concrete Interface Under Impact Loading

Abstract:Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheet/plate is widely used in reinforced concrete structures. Existing studies show that the bond behavior of FRP sheet-concrete plays a key role in FRP reinforced system. However, most of the researches focus on the, bond behavior of GFRP sheet-concrete interface under static loading. The dynamic bond behavior of GFRP sheet-concrete interface in shear was experimentally investigated with the drop-mass impact test method in this paper. The test results showed that strain distribution gradient of GFRP sheet under impact loading was greater than that under static loading, and the dynamic shear stress should be larger than the static shear stress. Additionally, the ultimate load of GFRP sheet-concrete interface increased obviously due to strain rate effect and the effective bond length decreases slightly.

Abstract:Externally bonding fiber reinforcement polymer (FRP)laminate to the soffit of reinforced concrete (RC) beam is an effective way to increase its flexural strength. The test results showed that: 1) As fiber reinforced concrete, side-bonding FRP laminates can also effectively increase the first crack strength of RC beams. The first crack load improved significantly; 2) side-bonding FRP laminates is not a good method to improve the flexural behavior of RC beam at the yield stage and the post yield stage. 3) Side-bonding of CFRP laminates is a good way for existing RC beams to control its crack width and deflection.

Abstract:Debonding failure is the main failure mode in flexurally strengthened reinforced concrete beams by externally bonded or near surface mounted fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. It is believed that FRP debonding will be initiated if the shear stress on the concrete-FRP interface reaches the tensile strength of concrete. However, it was found through experimental and analytical studies that the debonding mechanism of FRP composites has the potential of shear failure in combination with debonding failure. Moreover, the shear failure probably influences the debonding failure. Presently, there are very little experimental and analytical studies to investigate the influence of shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beam on FRP debonding failure. The current study investigates and analyzes the effect of shear resistance on FRP debonding failure based on test results. The analytical results show that the shear resistance of RC beam has a great effect on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beam. The influence of shear resistance on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity must be fully considered in flexural strengthening design of RC beams.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) sheets on the flexural performance of the beams strengthened at different levels of sustaining load, test of 16 RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets and 2 control beams was carried out. The bearing capacity and stiffness of the beams were analyzed in detail. The parameters of the test include the reinforcement ratio, quantities of CFRP sheets, and sustaining load level at the time of strengthening. The experimental and analytical results led to the conclusions summarized as follows: 1) the stiffness of cracked beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets is greater than that of the control beams. 2) the yielding load and ultimate bearing capacity of the beams are not affected by the value of the sustaining load at that load RC beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets, but affect the stiffness of the beams, especially the average tangent stiffness after rebar yielding. The experimental and analytical results are valuable for authorizing codes and for practical engineering.

Abstract:Eighteen reinforced concrete beams, including 16 beams strengthened with CFRP laminate at different levels of preload and 2 control beams, were tested to investigate the influence of preload level on flexural behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC beam. The experimental parameters include rebar ratios, number of plies of CFRP laminates and preload level at the time of strengthening. Theoretical analysis was also carried out to explain the experimental phenomena and results. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that the preload level has more influence on the stiffness and deflection of the strengthened beam, both at post-cracking and post-yielding stage, than that on the yielding and ultimate flexural strength of the strengthened beam. The main failure mode of CFRP-strengthened beam is the intermediate crack-induced debonding of CFRP laminates, provided that the development length of CFRP laminates and shear capacity of the beam are sufficient.

Abstract:Most of the laboratory tests investigated the flexural performance of un-preloaded or undamaged RC beams strengthened with CFRP composites. However, in engineering applications, the structural member must carry a certain load or damage. There is a lack of systematical investigations on the effects of preload or damage level on the flexural load-carrying capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams. This paper tested 22 RC beams to investigate the influence of preload level on flexural load-carrying capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams. The test variables are preload level, amount of CFRP sheets, tension rebar ratio, and concrete strength. The test results show that if the preload level is not more than 80% of the yielding strength of the original beam, the preload or damage level does not influence the flexural load-carrying capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams. However, the ultimate flexural load-carrying capacity is significantly poor than that of RC beam strengthened under a preload level not more than 80% of the yielding strength, if the RC beams are strengthened under a preload level more than 90% of the yielding strength.

Abstract:The models to calculate the effective bond length determined by single-lap or double-lap shear tests are more suitable for the end-debonding failure; and the improved models based on the simply shear test models to calculate the effective bond length of flexural CFRP-strengthened beams failed by intermediate crack debonding (IC debonding) are also lack of the support of experimental data. To investigate the effective bond length of flexural CFRP-strengthened beams, a total of 9 flexurally CFRP-strengthened beams were tested. The experimental results show that the existing models are very conservative for calculating the effective bond length in flexural FRP-strengthened RC beams failed by IC debonding. Based on the experimental results, this paper presents a model to calculate the effective bond length of flexural FRP-strengthened RC beams failed by IC debonding, and a model to calculate the plastic hinge length at the shear-flexure span.

Abstract:As the main horizontal load-bearing member, the research on the impact resistance of reinforced concrete beams is an important part of the design of building structures against strong dynamic loads. Therefore, impact-resistant design is critical to the safety and maintainability of such structures. However, the impact performance of RC beams has not been well understood, and the methods of strengthening RC structures to resist impact loads are still very limited. In this study, experimental tests and numerical simulations were carried out to study the performance of RC beams with or without FRP reinforcement under impact loads. In order to study the dynamic performance of reinforced concrete beams before and after CFRP reinforcement under different impact conditions, the finite element analysis software ANSYS/LSDYNA was used to simulate the impact test of five ordinary RC beams and five strengthened beams. The impact speed and impact weight of the drop hammer are mainly changed during the simulation, and the stress distribution, crack development and failure morphology, and CFRP resistance contribution of the specimen were analyzed. The simulation results show that CFRP can alleviate the high stress in the impact transient concrete, reduce the deformation of the beam body, limit the crack development, and provide a certain impact resistance. The increase of the impact height has a more significant effect on the transient response of the component. CFRP can effectively restrain the deformation under different impact weight conditions. Therefore, strengthening RC beams with CFRP is an effective method to improve the impact load resistance.

Experimental Study on Flexural Capacity of RC Beams with Cross-Section Patching Repair and Strengthening by CFRP Sheet

Abstract:In recent years, deteriorated RC bridges due to chloride-induced corrosion have been generally rehabilitated using Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) sheet. Especially for the bridge, in which the spalling and peeling of covering concrete were occurred, the delaminated covering concrete should be removed and repaired by cross-section patching before bonding FRP sheet. In this paper, the flexural capacity of RC beams with cross-section patching repair and strengthening by CFRP sheet has been studied. The RC beams repaired by four kinds of polymer cement mortar (PCM) and three kinds of polymer cement concrete (PCC) were evaluated for the different rehabilitation. And also the following two points were discussed. In the field, before the cross-section patching repair work, the adhesive was applied at the interface of placing joint (also tensile reinforcement). And the putty was applied before bonding CFRP sheet for enhancing the effect of strengthening. The effects of applying adhesive and applying putty were described in this study.As the results, if the beams were repaired by patch repair material with less 18kN/mm2 of the elastic modulus, the load bearing capability degrades a little compared with the beam without repair. But when CFRP sheet was bonded to, the effect of strengthening degrades greatly compared with the beam without repair. For applying putty, the increase of the effect of strengthening enhanced a little. And for adhesive coating, the initial bond strength between the rebar and PCM increased, but the bond strength decreased after the slip of rebar.

Abstract:The influence of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) on dynamic mechanical properties of reinforced concrete (RC) beam was studied by drop hammer impact test system. The impact behaviors of beam, including failure mode, impact force peak value and peak deflection were analyzed. The experimental results show that bonding CFRP can reduce the crack width and change the failure mode of the beam. The length of CFRP has a certain influence on the impact force and deflection, and the peak inertia force of most beams is roughly in the range of 1/2-5/6 of the peak impact force. In addition, dynamic increase factor (DIF) increases with the increase of CFRP length, and its maximum value can reach 2.11.
