Abstract:This article aims at assessing the true impact of the Wyeth tradition on the art of the American painter, Andrew Wyeth. Indeed, from an early age, the art prodigy was tutored by his father, the famous illustrator and painter N. C. Wyeth. Parallels were also drawn later between the younger figurative painter and his father’s teacher, the renowned illustrator Howard Pyle. However, we contend that the fabrication of this dynasty of American realists has done more harm than good to the critical reception of Andrew Wyeth’s art. Since the mid-1960s, Wyeth’s images have been vilified by most critics and art historians who focus on their supposedly illustrative and theatrical tricks. Nevertheless, some of them hint at a dark and less congruent dimension in Wyeth’s art, while being unable to pinpoint it precisely. By examining more closely Wyeth’s compositional strategy and pictorial technique in the light of his predecessors, this paper suggests that the artist has created a very personal and original synthesis of European and American influences, with a deep Gothic undercurrent. Wyeth’s problematic relationship with his father has also generated a range of obsessive visual tropes betraying his struggle, as a man and as an artist, with what Harold Bloom called “the anxiety of influence”. Lastly, a thorough analysis of some of his occasional self-portraits will attempt to shed light on Wyeth’s complex and morbid depiction of the figure of the artist as a troubled soul.

Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between two extraordinary artists, father and son--N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009)--and their art. N.C. Wyeth, the father, the most famous illustrator of his day, painted scenes full of drama and action, often of men engaged in violent life and death struggles. N.C. was unable to separate from his powerful mother and yearned for his iconic father. He thought himself an artistic failure and dedicated himself to raising his children to be geniuses. The youngest son, Andrew Wyeth, who lived a "secret life," painted scenes often characterized by pathos: bleak and barren landscapes, leaden skies, tire tracks, gray framed houses, desiccated fields, and circling buzzards. In the father-son relationship, we often seen three themes perpetuated developmentally: (1) the son's identification with the innermost conflicts of his father; (2) the yearning for the iconic father of his youth; and (3) a continuation and disavowal of his father's life. These themes are played out in the relationship between Andrew Wyeth and his father.

Abstract:Richard Meryman began an enduring friendship with Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) while on the job as a "Life" magazine editor in 1964. For Meryman, this unique friendship yielded more than four decades of recorded conversations with Wyeth, his family, friends and neighbors in Wyeth's homes in Pennsylvania and Maine. Meryman notes that, whether during formal interviews, shared meals, car rides or long walks, "Wyeth applied to himself the same sensitive understandings that fueled his art. A lifelong realist who swam against the art world tide of modernism, he showed himself to be fundamentally a painter of emotion--of people and objects that somehow embodied his memories and imagination, triggering feelings inexpressible in words, but recognized by viewers." In five skillfully crafted monologues composed by Meryman around key themes in Wyeth's work, we hear the voices of not only the artist but also his subjects, neighbors, relatives and critics. The book includes reproductions of the works of art discussed by Wyeth in his own words, as well as previously unpublished photographs of Wyeth's studio taken in 2009.Richard Meryman is the author of the acclaimed biography "Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life" (1996).

Abstract:In Christina’s World, one of the most beloved works of American art, Andrew Wyeth painted Christina Olson crawling crablike across the field below her house, raised on emaciated arms, with a swollen knob for an elbow, and hands clenched and gnarled. The significance of these physical abnormalities, and the message Wyeth endeavored to convey via the portrait, are considered here in light of Christina’s medical history and the disorder it most likely signifies.

Abstract:Researching and writing on contemporary art and artists take many forms. This introductory chapter outlines the scope of the volume, which concerns the investigation of living or recently deceased artists who have produced innovative, distinctive or otherwise leading work within the last c. 30 years. The volume has its origins in recurrent dialogues between the two editors and others concerning the need for rigorous critical thinking on acts of researching and writing about contemporary artists and their output as well as self-reflective perspectives on the authors’ relationship to their subjects. The advent of practice as research in the arts disciplines is a secondary concern, since many of the questions raised by researching and writing on other contemporary artists also relate to writing about oneself and one’s own practice. The chapter concludes with a one-paragraph summary of each of the volume’s chapters in turn.

Abstract:The 17th century was a time of scientific discovery in Europe. Leading academic centers provided the general population with an opportunity to view anatomic dissections of human bodies. Rather than portray idealized versions of individuals, Dutch painters were committed to accurately representing their models. This was true for Johannes Vermeer. The 2023 exhibition of Vermeer's paintings at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam provided an unprecedented opportunity to observe 28 of his 37 existing paintings simultaneously in person. Here the authors suggest that in at least eight paintings a visibly pregnant woman is present. Vermeer's wife was pregnant or lactating most of the time during their 22‐year marriage. Further, evidence of specific medical findings and congenital anomalies such as polydactyly, ectrodactyly, alopecia, kyphosis, and hyperthyroidism were observed in the paintings. These have not been previously reported in the medical or art history literature.

Abstract:Abstract: This article explores the provenance of two portraits of the eighteenth-century Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman. One the original self-portrait and the other evidently a contemporary copy, the paintings have intersecting histories that have led to confusion and some enduring mysteries. The author sifts through documentary sources and consults with experts at the Angelika Kauffmann Research Project to firmly establish which is the original self-portrait and—even more tantalizingly—attempt to reconstruct the paintings' distinct but intertwining histories, speculate on the identity of the copyist, and explain how various misunderstandings (some of which linger into the present day) might have occurred.

Abstract:Artists of the World (AOW) is a biographical source for artists, artisans, craftspeople, designers, architects, and related occupations: It is “the world's most current, reliable, and extensive reference work on artists” (De Gruyter n.d.a.). It is the newer version of De Gruyter's Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon ‐ Internationale Künstlerdatenbank Online (AKL). Much of the content behind AOW is derived from AKL and its corresponding 119-plus print series built on previous art biographies in print. This fully digital resource has a new interface, search options, features, and a plan to expand, revise, and add content going forward. The scope is international but Western Europe is especially well covered.The look and search options of the interface are likely to continue to evolve, as marketing materials for the product indicate “preliminary version: web design still in process”for many of the screenshots.The database is still in its infancy, and it will take time for users to discover it, utilize it, attempt searches, learn of its new features, and discover its pros and cons. New features—versus those of AKL—include a handful of free articles, maps that cite places where an artist has lived, a focus on groups of artists around a theme or an art/architecture prize, the Connected artists feature, and artist groups and families (included in the Artist search).AOW, for those able to access it (a one-time purchase fee has not yet been made available), will likely become one of the most comprehensive and complete artist biographical tools available. German-language entries and lengthy biographies/ Biogramm , especially for more obscure names, will attract a specialist audience such as academics, representatives from the art market and art trade, art specialists, library catalogers, museum and gallery personnel, and collectors, but AOW will certainly stand out as an essential tool for in-depth art and architecture research.
Unveiling the Secrets of an Artwork through Non-Invasive Investigations—Case Study of a 19th-Century Female Portrait

Abstract:This article aims to present the results of the investigations performed on a 19th-century oil painting on canvas belonging to the Conservation and Restoration Department of the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The artwork depicting the portrait of a lady originating from an important Irish noble family (Judith Bunbury, 1785–1861) has been investigated using only non-invasive methods. The investigation protocol included digital photography in different light sources at different wavelengths, which was used to document the current condition of the painting, UV fluorescence, which highlighted the previous improper retouches and the presence of a varnish coat, Infrared reflectography, which brought to light the underdrawing made by the artist and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, an elemental analysis technique which indicated the chemical composition of the pigments, suggesting the use of lead white, a barium white pigment, yellow and red ochre, vermilion, cobalt blue, and a manganese-based brown pigment. The results of this entirely non-invasive investigation approach helped in choosing the most appropriate conservation and restoration methodology for the artwork.

Abstract:The published literature on the analysis of nineteenth-century British artists' materials for oil painting is reviewed. Painting media other than oil, and literature covering artists who worked before 1800 and after 1900, have not been included. Recent monographs that cover and interpret earlier published work have been cited where possible, in preference to the citation of all the earlier work by the same author. Sources of information, such as colourmen's archives, artists' diaries and surviving palettes, are discussed; and gaps in knowledge, as well as published information, are highlighted. The literature available on individual materials is summarised: supports and primings; pigments; paint, mediums and vehicles; adulterants; varnishing practices; and framing practices. Publications which deal with the materials used by individual artists are listed, and those which attempt to synthesise the information in terms of the preferences and choices made by an artist over a lifetime, by a group of artists, or during a particular period, are discussed. For the later nineteenth century, there is far more published information on non-British artists. This information is still relevant to the study of British art, since artists' materials would have been exported by then round Western countries, and even beyond. Significant publications in this area are cited.
