Abstract:This chapter reviews methods and techniques of digital reconstruction of disappeared architectural masterpieces. Through the overview of theoretical positions are explored heuristic values and communicative potentials of three-dimensional reconstruction, and prerogatives of animation in the interaction with three-dimensional data. Different critical approaches related to the architectures remained on paper are then brought to light. The examination of several case studies, also personally conducted, is extended to unbuilt architectures and minor architectures subject to demolition or transformation in order to highlight the different strategies used for the preservation of the memory of such heritage. Finally, the case study of Turin Horse-Racing Society Building by Carlo Mollino is extensively presented through the analysis of contemporary critical bibliography concerning the project, a description of archival sources and illustration of methods and techniques of the digital reconstruction.

Abstract:In 2014 I was privileged to assist in the appraisal of the photography, films, papers, and memorabilia of Thomas Bouchard. Because his images hold potential significance for dance history research, this paper offers information on Bouchard's materials now available to scholars. His photographs and films document leaders of modern dance in their prime, including treasured and hitherto unknown images of Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, José Limón, Helen Tamiris and others. Here, I reintroduce Bouchard to the field and describe the scope and content of his work now available at Harvard University's Houghton Library.

Abstract:The preservation and understanding of cultural heritage depends increasingly on in-depth chemical studies. Rapid technological advances are forging connections between scientists and arts communities, enabling revolutionary new techniques for non-invasive technical study of culturally significant, highly prized artworks. We have applied a non-invasive, rapid, high definition X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental mapping technique to a French Impressionist painting using a synchrotron radiation source, and show how this technology can advance scholarly art interpretation and preservation. We have obtained detailed technical understanding of a painting which could not be resolved by conventional techniques. Here we show 31.6 megapixel scanning XRF derived elemental maps and report a novel image processing methodology utilising these maps to produce a false colour representation of a "hidden" portrait by Edgar Degas. This work provides a cohesive methodology for both imaging and understanding the chemical composition of artworks, and enables scholarly understandings of cultural heritage, many of which have eluded conventional technologies. We anticipate that the outcome from this work will encourage the reassessment of some of the world's great art treasures.

Abstract:This article addresses the status of alphabetic letters as images — and the chiastic counterpart — within early modern painting through Albrecht Dürer's oil self-portraits, particularly the Self-Portrait of 1500. Despite the sheer amount of text in painting and the increasing attention paid to the visuals of letters in the press' wake, we still lack a systematized approach for interpreting writing as painting. Pointing out that alphabetic letters enter the domain of the professional artist at this time, I propose a methodology that takes account of the force of letters operating simultaneously as images, sounds, and words or morphemes. Negotiations between alphabetic and human forms offer a means of mapping multiple alliances, as particular letterforms are charged with regional, cultural, educational, artistic, class, religious, and personal valence. The complementarity of writing and painting allows Dürer to portray himself as a multidimensional composite being, harmonizing potential contradictions. The argument draws on a variety of Dürer's visual and written sources to demonstrate the ways early modern visual practices engaged in the fullest exploitation of the linguistic.

In supporting this function, their generative practices can be viewed as curatorial and editorial functions. How does archivally informed book art represent and communicate evidence? Abstract:This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) digitization methodology for documenting the appearance and geometry of cultural heritage buildings using modern tools for data acquisition and processing. This work presents a method combining laser scanning of building dimensions with photographic texture acquisition techniques in order to develop accurate, photo-realistic 3D models. This work also presents a method for digital reconstruction of the elements of interiors. This case study presents the process and result of scanning the church of St Adalbert in Chicago along with its inner finishing elements, achieved during the interventional 3D scanning of a historical building interior. The obtained colorized point cloud has 3.5 billion points and a volume of 65 GB. Its creation took nearly 3.5 h on a high-end computer. The generated textured mesh model has 1.6 billion triangles and a volume of 60 GB. The analysis of the results showed that the elements of the church furnishings were reproduced with very high accuracy. The developed 3D model of the interior, appearance and dimensions of the church is its perpetual documentation. It can be used for various purposes, such as popularizing the appearance on the Internet, scientific research on interior artefacts, creating files for VR and shooting high-resolution films.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article explores the area of born-digital design records and visual literacy with an aim of demystifying these records and empowering archivists to appraise, describe, preserve, and provide access to them. It does so in a stepwise manner, guiding the archivist or researcher through the process of preparing, opening, viewing, exploring, and understanding these files. While at first the technical aspects of born-digital design records, such as computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM), can seem challenging, archivists should not be deterred. The article introduces crucial historical context and a methodology for unpacking the contents of born-digital design records, which together enable archivists to better see and decipher their significance and meaning. Also discussed are records creators, software preferences, processing workflows, and the visual interpretation of rendered images and the software interfaces. This then leads to a discussion around how to contextualize and understand the built form being communicated through drawings and models. The article also points to the array of teaching tools and interest groups that support archivists who wish to learn about the design community's practices, with the aim of lowering the barrier to engagement with these records. Visual literacy should be recognized as a vital skill, useful both in understanding these records and in decision-making around retention and preservation, so that stories of the places and people they reflect can be told.

Documentary Photography and the Representation of Life on the Streets in Two Works by Martha Rosler and Jeff Wall: Ethical and Aesthetic Considerations

Abstract:Four decades separate Martha Rosler’s The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems (1974-1975) from Jeff Wall’s Approach (2014), two representations of life on the streets. In the 1970s, Martha Rosler, among others, sought to define and practice documentary photography in ways that would invite the viewer to reflect on the politics of representation at work in documentary art. Forty years later, in his work Approach, representing a homeless woman, Jeff Wall, in the style he describes as “near-documentary”, also questions notions of objectivity, authenticity and realism in photography. The balance that both Wall and Rosler pursue between proximity with reality taken as lived experience and distance from the illusion of the authentic moment is emblematic of a shared strategy. Through the dialectic of visibility and invisibility, this strategy aims at revealing the double process at work in documentary photography, that of approaching a subject and establishing a distance with it. The radical act of “not photographing” ironically present in both works underlines the ways in which Rosler and Wall are engaged in a critique of the politics of visibility.

Abstract:This essay aims to examine how archival material is repurposed within autobiographical documentaries in order to reconstruct the documentarian filmmaker's self in relation to their family. It is plausible for the filmmaker to explore their own identity by reexamining their family history, especially with interviews and observational devices; however, domestic media plays a particular role in creating a supporting discourse that finds new meanings from the confrontation of statements and images. By analyzing three examples of autobiographical documentaries, namely Tarnation (Jonathan Caouette, 2003), 51 Birch Street (Doug Black, 2005) and The Marina Experiment (Marina Lutz, 2009), we will explore how the re-contextualization of personal images works as a narrative strategy to unveil identity contestations in American autobiographical filmmaking.

Abstract:In the 1970s and 1980s a certain kind of anonymous architecture emerged in West German cities of the former Bonn Republic which is currently confronted with the risk of demolition, stemming mainly from the lack of recognition and care. These buildings have played a significant role in shaping the character of today’s typical West German cities, thus holding a crucial place in the identity of these urban and suburban areas. Therefore, this paper focuses on the concept of photography as a visual preservation method, using the city of Aachen as a representative example of an average-sized West German city. The objective is to enhance the appreciation of this neglected cultural heritage, both in terms of sustainable urban planning and potential inclusion in the canon of architectural history.

Abstract:Digital art history is currently moving into a new phase. As a result of the ongoing digitization of artifacts and the creation of large digital repositories that bring together literary sources, images, as well as historical and technical data, new perspectives point to data mining and data/image processing. This article reviews some of the main data and image bases that deal with technical and material studies on works of art. The work-in-progress, Technical Data/Image Base on Caravaggio and His Followers, of the Max Planck Institut für Kunstgeschichte/Bibliotheca Hertziana (Rome, Italy) is presented within a historical and theoretical framework, describing the establishment of technical research in art history and the role played as early as 1930 by the International Conference for the Study of Scientiﬁc Methods in the Examination and Conservation of Artworks (Rome). The state of the art of technical research on the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi, Il Caravaggio (1571–1610) and its critical issues are also sketched out, and the nature of the scientific information provided by digital multispectral imaging is considered within a brief review of the history of technical images.

Abstract:Abstract Since c. 2008 many special collections libraries have allowed researchers to take photographs of medieval manuscripts: this article calls such self-service photography ‘DIY digitization’. The article considers some possible effects of this digital tool for research on book history, especially on palaeography, comparing it in particular to the effects of institutionally-led digitization. ‘DIY digitization’ does assist with access to manuscripts, but less easily and with less open data than institutional digitization does. Instead, it allows the researcher’s intellectual agenda to guide the selection of what to photograph. The photographic process thereby becomes part of the process of analysis. Photography by the researcher is therefore limited by subjectivity but it also helps to highlight the role of subjective perspectives in scholarship. It can also balance a breadth or depth of perspective in ways different from institutional digitization. It could in theory foster increased textual scholarship but in practice has fostered attention to the materiality of the text.

Abstract:In the mid-1960's a group of Benedictine monks at Saint John's Abbey and University in central Minnesota faced a challenge. They were wondering what could be done to preserve the precious hand-written religious books located in European monasteries and libraries. The devastation of World War II was a recent memory, and the potential loss of cultural material in the event of the Cold War suddenly turning “hot” was difficult to imagine. The monks had two goals: the preservation of the manuscript's contents and the creation of a means for scholars to easily access them. The task was daunting – thousands of manuscripts existed in dozens of Western European locations.

Abstract:This article aims to present the results of the investigations performed on a 19th-century oil painting on canvas belonging to the Conservation and Restoration Department of the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The artwork depicting the portrait of a lady originating from an important Irish noble family (Judith Bunbury, 1785–1861) has been investigated using only non-invasive methods. The investigation protocol included digital photography in different light sources at different wavelengths, which was used to document the current condition of the painting, UV fluorescence, which highlighted the previous improper retouches and the presence of a varnish coat, Infrared reflectography, which brought to light the underdrawing made by the artist and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, an elemental analysis technique which indicated the chemical composition of the pigments, suggesting the use of lead white, a barium white pigment, yellow and red ochre, vermilion, cobalt blue, and a manganese-based brown pigment. The results of this entirely non-invasive investigation approach helped in choosing the most appropriate conservation and restoration methodology for the artwork.
