Abstract:In 2019, the Council of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) mandated the formation of the Climate Action Task Force, which is charged with reimagining the organization of the annual conference to fully acknowledge and actively address the scale of the contemporary climate crisis. In considering alternative conference models, this article argues that the AAG should avoid reaching for a simple, technical fix, such as maintaining a central conference location, with virtual participation added in. I argue here that the current high-emissions configuration of the AAG Annual Meeting reflects a confluence of processes, including the neoliberal internationalization of the academy. This form of internationalization, oriented toward those who can both afford and are permitted to gain entry to the United States, currently reproduces and deepens a politics of knowledge enclosure, in which ideas are most available to an elite transnational group of scholars. If the underlying cultural politics that promote hypermobility remain unchallenged, any shift in format might simply reproduce, even deepen, the process of knowledge enclosure. Thus, a strong reaffirmation of geography as a public good in practice and intent should serve as a guiding principle for change.

Abstract:The conference Galactic and Stellar Dynamics in the Era of High Resolution Surveys took place at the European Doctoral College (EDC) in Strasbourg from 2008 March 16 to 20. The event was co-sponsored by the Astronomische Gesellschaft (AG) and the Societe Francaise d'Astronomie et d'Astrophysique (SF2A), a joint venture aiming to set a new trend of regular thematic meetings in specific areas of research. This special issue of the Astronomische Nachrichten is a compilation of the papers presented at the meeting. Abstract:The Society for Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology (SCGDB) held its 46th Annual Meeting at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 10th–12th, 2023. On the first day of the meeting, Drs. Sally Moody and Justin Cotney were each honored with the SCGDB Distinguished Scientist Awards for their exceptional contributions to the field of craniofacial biology. The following two days of the meeting featured five sessions that highlighted new discoveries in signaling and genomic mechanisms regulating craniofacial development, human genetics, translational and regenerative approaches, and clinical management of craniofacial differences. Interactive workshops on spatial transcriptomics and scientific communication, as well as a poster session facilitated meaningful interactions among the 122 attendees representing diverse career stages and research backgrounds in developmental biology and genetics, strengthened the SCGDB community.

Abstract:THE Society of Glass Technology began a two days anniversary meeting on November 9 to celebrate its Coming of Age. The proceedings opened with a luncheon that was attended by the vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield and Mrs. Pickard-Cambridge, Mrs. F. Wood, Lord Cozens-Hardy, Mr. Geoffrey Pilkington, Mr. W. L. Chance and many other prominent glass manufacturers. In addition, the Society had as its guests four foreign delegates from the Continent, namely, Prof. A. J. de Artigas (Spain), Prof. G. Keppeler (Germany), Dr. B. Long (France), and Dr. H. Maurach (Germany). Of the eighteen original members who still retain their connexion with the Society, thirteen attended. The toast of the Society was proposed by Dr. A. W. Pickard-Cambridge, who spoke of the good effect of such scientific societies internationally and said he looked forward to a time when the University could do more towards developing the artistic side. He concluded by thanking the Society for its generosity in promising to contribute £2,500 towards the Elmfield Fund. The toast was supported by Prof. Keppeler (representing the Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft) and Mr. S. B. Bagley, president of the Glass Manufacturers Federation.

Diversity at a Small Geoscience Conference

Abstract:Abstract Large conferences lack diversity, as it has been demonstrated by analyses of several diversity measures. In the present contribution, we analyze the gender, country of affiliation and student status of the participants and presenters during four instances of a small European geoscience conference, as well as the length of presentation, number and tone of questions of the latest instance of this conference. Women make up about one‐third of participants, session chairs, invited keynote speakers, and presenters (oral and poster) on average but percentages vary greatly from one year to the next. Students represent around 30% of participants, but over 40% of poster presenters and 28% of long presentations. In total, only half of the participants asked a question and most of the questions were asked by senior men. Around 25% of the questions were asked with a friendly tone; the remainder were neutrally asked. Friendly questions were asked more frequently after keynote lectures and long presentations than following short talks. We suggest concrete actions that can be taken to promote the development of an inclusive and supportive environment at small conferences.

Abstract:Scottish Vision Group has become a yearly event for vision scientists based in Scotland since its inception in 2001. Each year, the conference is hosted at a different location and organised by a different team. The 2023 SVG meeting was hosted in the city of Dundee by Abertay University. Delegates travelled from the United Kingdom, Europe and beyond. The meeting started with a roundtable panel discussion sponsored by Meta Reality Labs. The roundtable, titled The Past, Present and Future of Visual Search, was organised and presented by Árni Kristjánsson (Iceland), Ioan Smart (Abertay) and Ian Thornton (Malta). The MDPI Keynote lecture was introduced by Professor Andrew Parker (Oxford University and Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany) and presented by Prof. Timothy Ledgeway (Nottingham) on sensory eye dominance and plasticity in adult binocular vision. The remaining two days of the conference hosted a wide range of talks on topics ranging from insect navigation to visual illusions, facial recognition and binocular coding. The Saturday evening saw a special event where delegates explored the sensory properties of a range of single-malt whiskies. Here, we present a selection of abstracts for the various talks and posters.

Abstract:The 50th annual conference of the North American Thermal Analysis Society is being held jointly with the 8th Baekeland Symposium to bring those communities together. NATAS offers scientists and practitioners the opportunity to explore the frontiers of thermal analysis, rheology, and materials characterization, learn of developments in instrumentation and software, as well as applications in a variety of industrial settings. The Baekeland Symposium has a record of showcasing the latest scientific, technical and industrial innovations in the field of high performance thermosetting polymers. This year is the first joint meeting of the two organizations and is expected to provide opportunities for new collaborations and exchange of ideas. Presentations and posters by renowned scientists and graduate students set the stage for excellent discussions and an ideal environment to learn about state-of-the-art techniques and exciting new developments in thermal analysis and materials research.

Studying Gender in Conference Talks -- data from the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society

Abstract:We present a study on the gender balance, in speakers and attendees, at the recent major astronomical conference, the American Astronomical Society meeting 223, in Washington, DC. We conducted an informal survey, yielding over 300 responses by volunteers at the meeting. Each response included gender data about a single talk given at the meeting, recording the gender of the speaker and all question-askers. In total, 225 individual AAS talks were sampled. We analyze basic statistical properties of this sample. We find that the gender ratio of the speakers closely matched the gender ratio of the conference attendees. The audience asked an average of 2.8 questions per talk. Talks given by women had a slightly higher number of questions asked (3.2$\pm$0.2) than talks given by men (2.6$\pm$0.1). The most significant result from this study is that while the gender ratio of speakers very closely mirrors that of conference attendees, women are under-represented in the question-asker category. We interpret this to be an age-effect, as senior scientists may be more likely to ask questions, and are more commonly men. A strong dependence on the gender of session chairs is found, whereby women ask disproportionately fewer questions in sessions chaired by men. While our results point to laudable progress in gender-balanced speaker selection, we believe future surveys of this kind would help ensure that collaboration at such meetings is as inclusive as possible.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, every scholarly publisher has migrated at least the mechanical aspects of their journal publishing so that they utilize digital means. The academy was comfortable with that for a while, but publishers are under increasing pressure to adapt further. At the American Astronomical Society (AAS), we think that means bringing our publishing program to the point of being fully digital, by establishing procedures and policies that regard the digital objects of publication primarily. We have always thought about our electronic journals as databases of digital articles, from which we can publish and syndicate articles one at a time, and we must now put flesh on those bones by developing practices that are consistent with the realities of article at a time publication online. As a learned society that holds the long-term rights to the literature, we have actively taken responsibility for the preservation of the digital assets that constitute our journals, and in so doing we have not forsaken the legacy pre-digital assets. All of us who serve as the long-term stewards of scholarship must begin to evolve into fully digital publishers.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:ADASS has been a successful conference series for 24 years. If it is to continue to be successful and relevant we need to ensure that it provides what we as a community need from an annual conference. Earlier this year the ADASS Program Organising Committee conducted a survey on the content, style and governance of ADASS, in order to ascertain the conference needs of our community of astronomy software, methods and algorithms providers and users. 140 people participated in the survey: familiar faces, newcomers and a significant number of people who have yet to attend an ADASS. We summarise the Birds of a Feather session held on 7 October 2014, which discussed the findings of the survey and the shape that the community would like future ADASS meetings to take: What do we like of the current format? What would we change? What can we do to make ADASS fit our current and future needs? If we are to ensure that ADASS is vibrant, interesting and at the cutting edge of our subject we need to take collective responsibility for shaping its future.
