Abstract:My first encounter with the British Liquid Crystal Society (BLCS) annual meetings began with attending the conference in Norwich back in 2008. I was fascinated by the rich diversity of the subject liquid crystals and have taken every opportunity to attend the BLCS meetings thereafter. Liquid crystals are amongst rare scientific areas that bring under one roof researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from abstract topics of pure mathematics and state-of-the-art computer modelling to chemical synthesis, application of advanced physical techniques and engineering applications. Talking more generally, it would not be an exaggeration to state that liquid crystals are not just a subject of research in its own merit. Liquid crystals play much greater role in inspiring and stimulating the advances within many scientific disciplines. This is because of the intriguing complexity of the phenomena associated with liquid crystals with the promise for many potential practical applications. The BLCS meetings also offer an exciting opportunity for academics, PhD students and industrialists to meet and exchange ideas and discuss potential projects for collaboration which otherwise would not be possible. The 28th BLCS conference held this year in Durham was not an exception in all these respects. The meeting took place at the Calman Learning Centre on the University Science Site. It started with the registration in the foyer of the Centre followed by the lunch. Then Mark Wilson, the local conference organiser and the host, welcomed the delegates to the venue with the open remarks and brief housekeeping announcements. The first session kicked off with the plenary talk by Randall Kamien (University of Pennsylvania) on classification of topological defects in liquid crystals with particular emphasis on smectics with the broken translational symmetry. It was a mathematical by very engaging talk involving quite an interaction with the audience. It set up a good pace for the rest of the session. I have to admit that at the conference there were a good number of talks focusing on the singularities (defects) in liquid crystals. And the first session was concerned with the pleasures of mathematics, such as geometric topology and related topics, which allow one to explain and even predict topological phenomena in liquid crystals. The next speaker up was Timothy Atherton (Tufts University) who, after a brief crash course on differential geometry, reported on the computational modelling of defect textures on relaxing nematic shells. His work involves energy minimisation with simulated annealing to probe the phenomena such as annihilation of defect pairs. The last talk before the break was given by Doug Cleaver (Sheffield Hallam University) who talked about polar and azimuthal anchoring of nematics studied by molecular modelling. We learned how simulations could help to understand the alignment of the molecules in the films, how molecules interact with the surface and the elastic properties of the bulk. After the break, the next session was opened by Dave Walba (University of Colorado) with a talk about the formation of the helical nanofilament phase, a mysterious B4 phase. In B4 phase, bentcore molecules form a unique hierarchical assembly of stacked layers with the precise layer spacing, a material with the potential for application in solar energy conversion. Next, Ingo Dierking (University of Manchester) brought the attention of the audience to lyotropic liquid crystals and to their chiral SmC phase with polar switching. It is quite known that the tilted SmC analogue phases have hardly been seen in lyotropic liquid crystals and certainly not their chiral analogues. Ingo’s report was on the first observation of the lyotropic ferroelectric liquid crystal SmC* phase, a state that combines macroscopic chirality with polar electro-optic switching. Next speaker was Nicholas Kasch (also from the University of Manchester) who talked about a famous blue phase and how mixing with chain polymers affects its properties. Particular focus was on how this mixing improves the blue phase stability temperature range with potential implications to material science and photonics. The final speaker of day one was Rachel Hyman (University of Cambridge) with the talk about blue phase liquid crystals stabilised by polymers. Such materials can be employed as polarisation independent phase modulation devices with many potential applications in computer-generated holograms, optical correlators and tweezers.
