Abstract:Power-output maximization problem for multistage endoreversible non-isothermal-chemical-engine (ENICE) is researched. Major features of multistage-ENICE include two aspects: one is with an infinite-sink and a finite-source, another is with heat-and-mass-transfer (HMT) between reservoir and working-fluid simultaneously. Coupled HMT effect in multistage-ENICE can be considered based on either Lewis-analogy or Onsager-equations. It is more appropriate to apply Lewis-analogy than Onsager-equations when HMT is within a nonlinear-region, which is far-from equilibrium-state. According to Lewis-analogy, Newton's heat-transfer-law and Fick's diffusive-mass-transfer-law are utilized to present HMT processes between working-fluid and reservoir, respectively. With given initial-concentration of key component (CKC) in finite-source, given initial-fluid temperature, and given initial-time, power-output maximization for a continuous-model is performed by using Euler-Lagrange equation and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman theory, as well as that for discrete-model is performed by using discrete-maximum-principle and dynamic-programming-method, respectively. Relationships among the maximum power-output of multistage-ENICE, final-CKC, final-time, and final-temperature are discussed. It is found that if both final-temperature and concentration are free, there exist optimal final-temperature and optimal final-concentration for power-output maximization of multistage-ENICE. Besides, there exist low limits for both final-concentration and final-temperature, respectively. Two cases for multistage endoreversible pure-heat-engine and multistage endoreversible isothermal-chemical-engine are further obtained from the general results.
