Abstract:<p>In this paper, a Risley-prism imaging system is proposed, which incorporates a camera and two coaxial Risley prisms to capture various scenes, namely images captured by equivalent cameras. An equivalent camera calibration method is established to obtain the extrinsic parameters of the equivalent cameras from rectified images captured by the system. To improve calibration accuracy, a geometric method is applied to rectify the degraded images over the whole scanning area. Such opto-electronmechanical configuration makes possible an agile and compact imaging system suitable for boresight adjustment. Experiments that apply imaging system located in different positions are conducted to validate the proposed method, and results are compared to verify its efficiency and accuracy.</p>

Abstract:A new method, in which the wavefronts of the zero-order and the positive and negative first-order diffracted beams from a planar scale grating in Littrow setup are analyzed by a Fizeau interferometer, is proposed to evaluate the Z-directional out-of-flatness as well as the X-and Y-directional pitch deviations of the planar scale grating over a large area. Meanwhile, the surface profile of the reference optical flat in the Fizeau interferometer can also be determined in a much simpler and more efficient approach than the commonly used liquid-flat reference and three-flat test calibration methods. Abstract:Risley-prism-based image sensors can expand the imaging field of view through beam control. The larger the top angle of the prism, the higher the magnification of the field of view, but at the same time, it aggravates the problem of imaging aberrations, which also puts higher requirements on the aberration correction method for the Risley-prism-based image sensor. To improve the speed, accuracy, and stability of the aberration correction process, an automatic calibration method for the Risley-prism-based image sensor is proposed based on a two-axis turntable. The image datasets of the calibration plate with different prism rotation angles and object distances are acquired using a two-axis turntable. Then, the images of the calibration plate are pre-processed using the bicubic interpolation algorithm. The calibration parameters are finally calculated, and parameter optimization is performed. The experimental results verify the feasibility of this automated calibration method. The reprojection error of the calibration is within 0.26 pixels when the distance of the imaging sensor is 3.6 m from the object, and the fine aberration correction results are observed.

Abstract:The common camera lens usually includes the spherical glass/plastic lens and aspheric glass/plastic lens. However, spherical/aspheric shape measurement is still a key problem in the process of optical lens fabrication. At present, the in-process measurement of spherical/aspheric shape is conducted mainly by the probe-contacting method. But after a long time, its probe could be scratched severely and cause some big errors. Laser shearing interferometry is a good substitute to some degree. Nevertheless, it is not convenient for general shearing interferometer to carry out the in-process measurement because it is only suitable for certain kind of spherical/aspheric with respect to aperture or asperity. Here a new lateral shearing interferometer is proposed to solve the described problems. It is based on two Jamin plates and rotatable prism pairs which are used not only for shearing displacement and direction, but also for fringe period and tilt degree, in order to meet requirements of various spherical/aspheric shapes or asperities. The new interferometer features a simple optical structure and two symmetric light paths, which makes its system with minimal error. The relation between shearing displacement, fringe period and prism angle of rotation is given in this paper. And the error source is primarily from the manufacture errors of prisms and plates. The final experiments show that one can achieve good-quality fringe patterns according to the requirement of measurement, concerning the shearing direction, shearing displacement, fringe period, tilt degree, etc.
A Projector Calibration Method for Fringe Projection System

Abstract:Accurate calibration of image acquisition and projection device in fringe projection measurement system is the basis of system work, and the calibration accuracy of the parameters directly affects the measurement accuracy of the system. An improved projector calibration method is proposed. Using a high-precision circular calibration plate, the camera is calibrated by Zhang Zhengyou's calibration method and nonlinear optimization; using the vertical and horizontal two sets of grating images projected by the projector, the corresponding relationship between them and the camera image is established, and then the center of the mark point in the projection is obtained. Then use the camera model with radial distortion to calibrate the projector; analyze the phase error when the projector is calibrated, and use the improved multifrequency fringe phase shift method to reduce the error; finally, through the calibration and the three-dimensional measurement experiment verifies the method in this paper. The experimental results show that the calibration method in this paper is simple in operation, high in precision and wide in application.

Abstract:Systematic error in the point diffraction interferometer can significantly influence the measurement accuracy in the case that a high-numerical-aperture spherical surface is tested, in which wavefront aberrations could be observed and cannot be removed with the traditional calibration method. A calibration method, called symmetrical position aberration cancellation (SPAC) method, is proposed to remove the systematic error. With the SPAC method, the calibration needs two separate measurements with interferograms of opposite tilts and the systematic error can be reduced by averaging the test wavefronts of these two measurements. A geometrical optics model is presented for facilitating the calculation of the geometric aberrations that are introduced by the lateral deviation between the curvature center of the test surface and the center of the pinhole. Then a simulation model is built to analyze the influence of the lateral deviation and the numerical aperture of the surface under test on the systematic error. Both the computer simulation and experiments with a point diffraction interferometer (PDI) have been carried out to validate the proposed calibration method. In the final comparative experiment with a ZYGO interferometer, the PDI exhibits high precision in high-numerical-aperture spherical surfaces measurement based on the proposed calibration method. Abstract:The calibration of the non-orthogonal error in nanoscale measurements is of paramount importance for analytical measuring instruments. Particularly, the calibration of non-orthogonal errors in atomic force micro-scopy (AFM) is essential for the traceable measurements of novel materials and two-dimensional (2D) crystals. The 2D self-traceable grating with a theoretical non-orthogonal angle of less than 0.0027 degrees and an expanded uncertainty of 0.003 degrees (k = 2) are measured by the Metrological Large Range Scanning Probe Microscope (Met. LR-SPM). In this study, we characterized the local and overall non-orthogonal error in AFM scans and proposed a protocol to tune the optimal scanning parameters of AFM minimizing the non-orthogonal error. We presented the method for accurately calibrating a commercial AFM system for non-orthogonal by establishing a detailed un-certainty budget and errors analysis. Our results verified the important advantages of the 2D self-traceable grating in calibrating precision instruments.

Abstract:The normal tracing angle measurement system based on Risley prisms can eliminate the influence of aberrations other than the dispersion of Risley prisms on the angle measurement accuracy. Although the traditional dispersion optimization method based on the extreme point can make the beam directions of different wavelengths more consistent after passing through the Risley prisms, the light intensity distribution that deviates from the extreme point wavelength causes the spot centroid to deviate from the target position, thus introducing the angle measurement error. In this paper, we propose a highly symmetry-glued achromatic Risley prisms optimization method for the needs of a normal tracing angle measurement system. Our method not only realizes the beam direction as closely as possible after the deflection of the Risley prisms but also compensates for the centroid error caused by the beam deviating from the central wavelength. ZEMAX simulation shows that, in the normal tracing angle measurement system, within the angle measurement range of ±700 ″ and the light source wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm, the angle measurement error introduced by the dispersion of the optimized Risley prisms is not >0.01 ″ .

Abstract:To improve airborne search and rescue operations and the general aerial surveillance efficiency, new concepts of multiple field-of-view and variable-resolution imagers have been developed. These imagers provide surveillance operators with simultaneous wide area coverage and high-resolution imaging. Over the last years, several optical steering systems have been developed and field tested in operational conditions. These developments helped us to develop a novel camera steering system using achromatic Risley prisms. This simple and sturdy steering system allowed us to move rapidly and precisely the field of view of an infrared camera. To improve its performance, a three-dimensional (3D) refraction model was applied to enable fast pointing direction calibration and correction of distorted images. Image deformations were analyzed, and a fast linear image correction based on homographic transformation and the 3D refraction model are presented. Experimental results of mosaicking applications with real imaging systems in the 3- to 5-μm, 8- to 12-μm infrared, and 850- to 860-nm visible bands demonstrate the improvements achieved with the homographic image distortions correction and the fast pointing calibration procedure.

Abstract:Calibration for misalignment aberrations is one of the challenges in non-null interferometric aspheric testing. The high-order misalignment aberrations are especially difficult to distinguish from the rest of the testing system. The traditional calibration method removing the first four terms from the Zernike coefficients of the test wavefront is obviously inaccurate. Computer-aided alignment is considered to be an effective method; however, it is less practical due to its dependency on mechanical or manual adjustment, as are other common methods. A practical and accurate calibration method based on system modeling is proposed in this paper for misalignment aberrations’ removal. In this work, actual misalignments, which are calculated from five selected low-order aberrations of the test wavefront in the experiment, are simulated in the model to predict all misalignment aberrations by ray tracing. These aberrations then are removed by a simple wavefront data subtraction. The method depends on neither a precise adjusting mechanism nor a troublesome manual adjustment. Experimental results showing feasibility and repeatability of the proposed method are presented.

Abstract:The fringe reflection technique (FRT) has been one of the most popular methods to measure the shape of specular surface these years. The existing system calibration methods of FRT usually contain two parts, which are camera calibration and geometric calibration. In geometric calibration, the liquid crystal display (LCD) screen position calibration is one of the most difficult steps among all the calibration procedures, and its accuracy is affected by the factors such as the imaging aberration, the plane mirror flatness, and LCD screen pixel size accuracy. In this paper, based on the deduction of FRT analytical phase–slope description, we present a novel calibration method with no requirement to calibrate the position of LCD screen. On the other hand, the system can be arbitrarily arranged, and the imaging system can either be telecentric or non-telecentric. In our experiment of measuring the 5000mm radius sphere mirror, the proposed calibration method achieves 2.5 times smaller measurement error than the geometric calibration method. In the wafer surface measuring experiment, the measurement result with the proposed calibration method is closer to the interferometer result than the geometric calibration method.

Abstract:Purely rotation-based self-calibration receives the most attention among various self-calibration methods, owing to its algorithmic simplicity. However, it is actually impossible to ensure that the camera motion for this kind of self-calibration is a pure rotation, since the rotation center should-but unfortunately may never-completely coincide with the optical center with an unknown position. Almost all conventional pure rotation methods tend to ignore any translation, so the significant errors of calibration results could be inevitably introduced. We propose a practical and effective approach to improve the purely rotation-based self-calibration approach. The proposed approach accounts for translational offsets. According to the fact that the rotational angles between camera orientations have a very strong impact on the calibration errors from the translations, we compute the relative camera orientations prior to calibrating, then use different and very appropriate strategies for self-calibration in different angle circumstances, to achieve better calibration results. Both synthetic data and real data are used to test the proposed approach and very good results are obtained. Comparing the experimental results with those of conventional methods, the proposed approach significantly yields higher accuracy, and therefore reduces the calibration errors by the translations. General Model for the Pointing Error Analysis of Risley-Prism System Based on Ray Direction Deviation in Light Refraction

Abstract:The Risley-prism-based light beam steering apparatus delivers superior pointing accuracy and it is used in imaging LIDAR and imaging microscopes. A general model for pointing error analysis of the Risley prisms is proposed in this paper, based on ray direction deviation in light refraction. This model captures incident beam deviation, assembly deflections, and prism rotational error. We derive the transmission matrixes of the model firstly. Then, the independent and cumulative effects of different errors are analyzed through this model. Accuracy study of the model shows that the prediction deviation of pointing error for different error is less than 4.1×10-5° when the error amplitude is 0.1°. Detailed analyses of errors indicate that different error sources affect the pointing accuracy to varying degree, and the major error source is the incident beam deviation. The prism tilting has a relative big effect on the pointing accuracy when prism tilts in the principal section. The cumulative effect analyses of multiple errors represent that the pointing error can be reduced by tuning the bearing tilting in the same direction. The cumulative effect of rotational error is relative big when the difference of these two prism rotational angles equals 0 or π, while it is relative small when the difference equals π/2. The novelty of these results suggests that our analysis can help to uncover the error distribution and aid in measurement calibration of Risley-prism systems.
Analysis on key issues of boresight adjustment in imaging tracking based on Risley prisms

Abstract:Risley prisms can serve as a beam steering device to move field of view and appear to be a promising solution to boresight adjustment in imaging tracking applications. It is desirable to deduce the inherent relation among target offsets, target’s line of sight (LOS) deviations from sensor’s boresight and the required prism rotations. The boresight adjustment model based on Risley prisms is described. Reverse ray tracing is performed and case examples are given to characterize the nonlinear relationship between target offset and its LOS deviation. A boresight adjustment method based on the inverse ray tracing and the two-step method is then illustrated. The simulation results show that the target’s LOS deviations from the boresight are stretched along the boresight’s radial direction relative to the target offsets. By the proposed boresight adjustment method, the required rotations of the prisms can be derived from the target offset. The singularity problem is also pointed out using this method, and the corresponding conclusions are consistent with those deduced in many works. The research demonstrates the inner mechanisms of the imaging tracking based on Risley prisms in principle. The proposed boresight adjustment method can provide guidance for controlling the circular motion of the prisms.
