Abstract:The paper comprehensively analyzes the distortions of a circular wedge prism with 400mm diameter in a scanner by method of optical-mechanical-thermal integrating analysis. The structure and intensity of the prism assembly is verified and checked, and the surface deformations of the prism under gravity load, as well as the thermo-elastic distortions of the prism, are analyzed in detail and evaluated, which is finally contrasted with the measured values of Zygo Mark interferometer. The results show: the maximal distortion of the prism assembly is 10nm magnitude and the maximal stress is 0.441Mpa, which has much tolerance to the precision requirement of structure and the admissible stress of material; the influence of heat effect on the surface deformations of prism is proved to be far greater than the influence of gravity load, so some strict temperature-controlled measures are to be considered when the scanner is used.

Abstract:Aspheric non-null testing, as an alternative to the traditional null testing, achieves more flexible measurements. However, figure-error reconstruction in non-null tests has always been difficult due to the presence of retrace error. A novel method with reverse optimization is proposed for aspheric figure-error reconstruction in a non-null interferometer. It is a generalized and effective approach based on system modeling and polynomial fitting. An optimization function is set with polynomial coefficients of the desired figure error as variables and those of the detected experimental wavefront as optimization targets. Through the reverse optimization process with iterative ray tracing, the optimal solutions can be extracted and the desired figure error is reconstructed with a simple fitting procedure. Numerical simulations verifying the high accuracy of the proposed method are presented with error considerations. A set of experiments has also been carried out to demonstrate the validity and repeatability of this method.

Abstract:It is challenging to quantitate micron-scale defects on the surface of large optics. Based on microscopic scattering dark-field imaging, sub-aperture scanning and stitching, the Surface Defects Evaluating System (SDES) can spot and measure scratch and digs on large optics. In order to evaluate defects of down to sub-micron over apertures of hundreds of millimeters, high magnification zoom microscope and large format CCD camera are employed to balance between the efficiency and resolution. Unfortunately, large optical distortion in the sub-aperture images can be found, and feature recognition of defect images as well as mismatches of the sub-apertures stitching are greatly affected. In this paper, a distortion correction procedure based on the Brown–Conrady model is proposed. Grayscale surface fitting and bilinear interpolation techniques are employed to obtain better correction accuracy. A grids-patterned fused silica standard plate has been specifically made to calibrate the distortion. Comparison experiments indicate that the distortion in the SDES can be corrected by the proposed method very well.
First-order approximation error analysis of Risley-prism-based beam directing system.

Abstract:To improve the performance of a Risley-prism system for optical detection and measuring applications, it is necessary to be able to determine the direction of the outgoing beam with high accuracy. In previous works, error sources and their impact on the performance of the Risley-prism system have been analyzed, but their numerical approximation accuracy was not high. Besides, pointing error analysis of the Risley-prism system has provided results for the case when the component errors, prism orientation errors, and assembly errors are certain. In this work, the prototype of a Risley-prism system was designed. The first-order approximations of the error analysis were derived and compared with the exact results. The directing errors of a Risley-prism system associated with wedge-angle errors, prism mounting errors, and bearing assembly errors were analyzed based on the exact formula and the first-order approximation. The comparisons indicated that our first-order approximation is accurate. In addition, the combined errors produced by the wedge-angle errors and mounting errors of the two prisms together were derived and in both cases were proved to be the sum of errors caused by the first and the second prism separately. Based on these results, the system error of our prototype was estimated. The derived formulas can be implemented to evaluate beam directing errors of any Risley-prism beam directing system with a similar configuration. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Since optical distortion has been a big trouble for various kinds of imaging systems, finding a simple correction method with wide applications is of significant importance. In this paper, we propose a unified and simple correction method, performing well for both photographic and projective imaging systems. The basic idea is regarding the optical distortion as geometrical deformation between the object and image, without considering the specific features of an optical system. First of all, a calibration template is employed to establish the geometrical transformation model (GTM) for the distortion of a built optical system. Two alternative algorithms are given to estimate the GTM in algebraic form. The computation is very simple because no intrinsic parameters of the optical system are needed to establish the GTM. Besides, the errors introduced by the fabricating and assembling process can be eliminated. Then, the corrected image of the photographic system or the pre-distorted image of the projective systems can be obtained accordingly utilizing the GTM. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with wide applications.
General Model for the Pointing Error Analysis of Risley-Prism System Based on Ray Direction Deviation in Light Refraction

Abstract:The Risley-prism-based light beam steering apparatus delivers superior pointing accuracy and it is used in imaging LIDAR and imaging microscopes. A general model for pointing error analysis of the Risley prisms is proposed in this paper, based on ray direction deviation in light refraction. This model captures incident beam deviation, assembly deflections, and prism rotational error. We derive the transmission matrixes of the model firstly. Then, the independent and cumulative effects of different errors are analyzed through this model. Accuracy study of the model shows that the prediction deviation of pointing error for different error is less than 4.1×10-5° when the error amplitude is 0.1°. Detailed analyses of errors indicate that different error sources affect the pointing accuracy to varying degree, and the major error source is the incident beam deviation. The prism tilting has a relative big effect on the pointing accuracy when prism tilts in the principal section. The cumulative effect analyses of multiple errors represent that the pointing error can be reduced by tuning the bearing tilting in the same direction. The cumulative effect of rotational error is relative big when the difference of these two prism rotational angles equals 0 or π, while it is relative small when the difference equals π/2. The novelty of these results suggests that our analysis can help to uncover the error distribution and aid in measurement calibration of Risley-prism systems.
Optimization of Transverse Translation Diverse Phase Retrieval for Optical Elements with Mid-Spatial Frequency Errors

Abstract:During the fabricating procedure of optical elements, computer-controlled tools will introduce some periodic structured errors, named mid-spatial frequency errors, which may scatter the laser beams, create filamentous spots or even damage the optical components in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) high power laser system. Transverse translation diverse phase retrieval (TTDPR) is an ingenious phase retrieval method for measuring aspheric and freeform surfaces. In this paper, we explore the measurement of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency errors by using TTDPR. First, we briefly introduce the features of mid-spatial frequency errors and establish the relation between mid-spatial frequency errors and diffraction pattern. Second, with the knowledge of the mid-spatial frequency error, we analyze the feasibility of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency error measurement by using TTDPR. In order to improve the convergence and measurement accuracy of phase retrieval algorithm, initial inputs are optimized for the following iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Results indicate that a 50% higher reconstruction accuracy can be achieved, when the initial input is the ideal lens to recover the phase of lens with mid-spatial frequency errors. For TTDPR, sub-aperture illuminated with overlapping part among adjacent sub-apertures will improve accuracy of iterative phase algorithm than never overlapped sub-aperture, while it encumbers the efficiency of iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Based on the characteristics of the particular optical surfaces, the influence of major parameter of sub-aperture including the size of sub-aperture and the overlapped proportion among adjacent sub-aperture to accuracy and efficiency of TTDPR are also discussed.
Reverse Optimization Reconstruction Method in Non-Null Aspheric Interferometry

Abstract:Aspheric non-null test achieves more flexible measurements than the null test. However, the precision calibration for retrace error has always been difficult. A reverse optimization reconstruction (ROR) method is proposed for the retrace error calibration as well as the aspheric figure error extraction based on system modeling. An optimization function is set up with system model, in which the wavefront data from experiment is inserted as the optimization objective while the figure error under test in the model as the optimization variable. The optimization is executed by the reverse ray tracing in the system model until the test wavefront in the model is consistent with the one in experiment. At this point, the surface figure error in the model is considered to be consistent with the one in experiment. With the Zernike fitting, the aspheric surface figure error is then reconstructed in the form of Zernike polynomials. Numerical simulations verifying the high accuracy of the ROR method are presented with error considerations. A set of experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity and repeatability of ROR method. Compared with the results of Zygo interferometer (null test), the measurement error by the ROR method achieves better than 1/10 lambda.

Abstract:The normal tracing angle measurement system based on Risley prisms can eliminate the influence of aberrations other than the dispersion of Risley prisms on the angle measurement accuracy. Although the traditional dispersion optimization method based on the extreme point can make the beam directions of different wavelengths more consistent after passing through the Risley prisms, the light intensity distribution that deviates from the extreme point wavelength causes the spot centroid to deviate from the target position, thus introducing the angle measurement error. In this paper, we propose a highly symmetry-glued achromatic Risley prisms optimization method for the needs of a normal tracing angle measurement system. Our method not only realizes the beam direction as closely as possible after the deflection of the Risley prisms but also compensates for the centroid error caused by the beam deviating from the central wavelength. ZEMAX simulation shows that, in the normal tracing angle measurement system, within the angle measurement range of ±700 ″ and the light source wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm, the angle measurement error introduced by the dispersion of the optimized Risley prisms is not >0.01 ″ .

Abstract:Risley prisms can serve as a beam steering device to move field of view and appear to be a promising solution to boresight adjustment in imaging tracking applications. It is desirable to deduce the inherent relation among target offsets, target’s line of sight (LOS) deviations from sensor’s boresight and the required prism rotations. The boresight adjustment model based on Risley prisms is described. Reverse ray tracing is performed and case examples are given to characterize the nonlinear relationship between target offset and its LOS deviation. A boresight adjustment method based on the inverse ray tracing and the two-step method is then illustrated. The simulation results show that the target’s LOS deviations from the boresight are stretched along the boresight’s radial direction relative to the target offsets. By the proposed boresight adjustment method, the required rotations of the prisms can be derived from the target offset. The singularity problem is also pointed out using this method, and the corresponding conclusions are consistent with those deduced in many works. The research demonstrates the inner mechanisms of the imaging tracking based on Risley prisms in principle. The proposed boresight adjustment method can provide guidance for controlling the circular motion of the prisms.

Abstract:The Risley-prism system is applied in imaging LADAR to achieve precision directing of laser beams. The image quality of LADAR is affected deeply by the laser beam steering quality of Risley prisms. The ray-tracing method was used to predict the pointing error. The beam steering uncertainty of Risley prisms was investigated through Monte Carlo simulation under the effects of rotation axis jitter and prism rotation error. Case examples were given to elucidate the probability distribution of pointing error. Furthermore, the effect of scan pattern on the beam steering uncertainty was also studied. It is found that the demand for the bearing rotational accuracy of the second prism is much more stringent than that of the first prism. Under the effect of rotation axis jitter, the pointing uncertainty in the field of regard is related to the altitude angle of the emerging beam, but it has no relationship with the azimuth angle. The beam steering uncertainty will be affected by the original phase if the scan pattern is a circle. The proposed method can be used to estimate the beam steering uncertainty of Risley prisms, and the conclusions will be helpful in the design and manufacture of this system. Abstract:Risley prisms have quite a few advantages over their competitive mirror scanning systems, a highly commendable one being the conformal transformation of the angular motions of the two prisms into a 2D pattern in the polar frame. However, in such a transformation, knotty problems relating to the so-called control singularities unpreventably occur when the two prisms are either in parallel with their apexes aligned or in opposition to each other. The aim of Part II of this study is an extension of the theories and their applications presented in Part I of this study [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A39, 1540 (2022)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.463724] to a parametric analysis of the singularities and their describing functions for a better understanding of how the scanning geometry affects the attributes of the singularities and how we can reduce their unfavorable influence by properly selecting the parameters of this two-prism system.

Abstract:Risley systems and tilting orthogonal double-prism systems are optical systems consisting of two prisms in series. The analysis of such systems typically involves both direct and inverse problems. Problems of the former type can be easily solved using ray-tracing equations. However, inverse problems are comparatively more difficult if the search direction is not properly given prior to iteration. In the present study, the two optical systems are modeled using the homogeneous coordinate notation. A method is then proposed for solving the direct and inverse problems of both optical systems using a ray-tracing approach and the first- and second-order derivative matrices of the skew rays. In addition, four optimization methods based on the two derivative matrices are proposed for determining the search direction in the inverse problem. Eight illustrative examples are given. It is shown that the proposed method can not only determine the scan patterns and sensitivity coefficients in the direct problem, but also determine the search direction in the inverse problem.

Abstract:Risley-prism-based image sensors can expand the imaging field of view through beam control. The larger the top angle of the prism, the higher the magnification of the field of view, but at the same time, it aggravates the problem of imaging aberrations, which also puts higher requirements on the aberration correction method for the Risley-prism-based image sensor. To improve the speed, accuracy, and stability of the aberration correction process, an automatic calibration method for the Risley-prism-based image sensor is proposed based on a two-axis turntable. The image datasets of the calibration plate with different prism rotation angles and object distances are acquired using a two-axis turntable. Then, the images of the calibration plate are pre-processed using the bicubic interpolation algorithm. The calibration parameters are finally calculated, and parameter optimization is performed. The experimental results verify the feasibility of this automated calibration method. The reprojection error of the calibration is within 0.26 pixels when the distance of the imaging sensor is 3.6 m from the object, and the fine aberration correction results are observed.
