Abstract:Ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) has been widely used to improve the performance of welded joints due to its ability to reduce residual stresses. In this study, UIT was applied to the stress concentration regions of Invar 36 alloy welded joints obtained by autogenous laser welding. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated individually. The results showed significant plastic deformation on the surface impact area of the welded joints. UIT changed the size of the grains and developed a fiber layer of a certain thickness on the material surface, introducing a reinforced layer with a depth of 370-760 μm. When the working current of the ultrasonic impact equipment was increased to 2.0 A, the thickness of the reinforced layer reached 760 μm, and a higher microhardness was observed. The maximum hardness of the welded joint reached 234.3 HV at a working current of 2.0 A. At the same time, the depression formed by the impact reduced the effective area of the weld cross section, which led to a reduction in the tensile strength of the welded joints from 434.9 to 384.42 MPa. UIT effectively changed the residual tensile stress to compressive effectively stress, reducing the initial stress value from 167.1 to −152 MPa. Due to the introduction of compressive stress, the fatigue life of the welded joints improved by a factor of 3 to 5.
