Abstract:This study explores a cost-effective and efficient method for snow melting and deicing using a concrete pavement structure with pre-mixed chloride-salt antifreeze material. The mixed design method for road cement concrete with chloride-type antifreeze material is investigated by encapsulating NaCl and CaCl 2 in organic resin capsules. The snow melting and deicing efficacy of cement concrete with chloride antifreeze material is evaluated through an automatic tracking measurement system. The results indicate that NaCl-type antifreeze material is more effective in reducing the freezing point of concrete surface solution than CaCl 2 -type antifreeze material. A composite antifreeze material (4% NaCl + 1% CaCl 2 ) provides the strongest snow melting and deicing ability. An outward migration and diffusion model of chloride ion in cement concrete with antifreeze material is established to calculate the chloride ion diffusion coefficient, surface chloride ion content, and decay rate of concrete. The effective age of snow melting and deicing is analyzed using this model.

Abstract:Effective improvement of the frost resistance of concrete in cold regions is critical for the durability of airport pavement concrete in plateau. This paper intends to contribute to a better knowledge of the effects of combined air-entraining superplasticizer and surface treatments on the resistance against freezing-thawing and salt freezing. First, an optimum mixing by considering w/c, cement content, sand ratio, and air-entraining superplasticizer was obtained by comparing compressive and flexural strength, microstructure, pore distribution, and resistance to freezing-thawing of different mixes. From the results, a concrete mix with air-entraining superplasticizer, w/c = 0.4, cement amount at 330 kg/m3, and sand ratio = 0.3 was selected for airport pavement. Then, this mix was subjected to salt freezing with different surface treatments (smoothing, brushing, spraying with silane, and impregnating with silane), and the spalled mass loss in salt freeze cycles was reported. The results show that combined use air-entraining superplasticizer and surface treatments can provide an obvious improvement on the resistance to salt freezing. Compared to silane impregnation, surface treatment by silane spraying performed much better in early time.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. This study examines the engineering properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) for use in construction and transportation infrastructure. The UHPC investigated in this study consists of three types of pozzolan, microsilica, nanosilica, and fly ash. It also contains two types of aggregate, garnet and basalt. In addition, it contains steel fibers. The study investigated the properties of fresh UHPC (slump flow, slump flow T50, L-box, and V-funnel), the mechanical properties of UHPC, including compressive and tensile strength, and its durability by analyzing volumetric water absorption, special electrical resistance, and performing the rapid chloride permeability test using scanning electron microscopy to examine the microstructure of UHPC. The results show that UHPC exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, such as high compressive and tensile strengths and remarkable durability, including reduced water absorption, increased special electrical resistance, decreased permeability to chlorine ions, and a negligible permeability range. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that UHPC is a unique material with excellent performance in various engineering applications, making it an ideal choice for construction projects and transportation infrastructures where high strength and long-lasting durability are required.

Abstract:This study addresses the research gap in freeze-thaw performance of fresh-to-fresh cast (hot-jointed) composites by examining the effects of freeze-thaw cycles and sodium chloride on self-consolidating concrete (SCC) combined with engineered cementitious composites (ECC) or ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC). The potential use of hot-joint techniques for integrating ECC and UHPC with SCC to promote the sustainable application of these modern and efficient concretes is sought, while addressing the mechanical and durability limitations of SCC when exposed to freezing temperatures. The impact of fiber reinforcements in tensile ECC and UHPC layers has also been evaluated by comparing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and steel fibers. After 150 and 300 saline freeze-thaw cycles, flexural, compressive, and tensile bond strengths were tested. Microstructural degradation was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to detect chloride-bound phases. Results showed that composite systems had superior freeze-thaw resistance compared to mono-SCC. Chloride penetration was observed throughout SCC layers but was significantly reduced at bond layers with ECC and UHPC, especially in the UHPC based composites. PVA were more effective than steel fibers in reducing chloride binding and lowering corrosion risk.

Abstract:Existing concrete in cold or coastal regions is attacked by chloride penetration under freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). The combined deterioration process accelerate the damage evolution of concrete and reduces the service life of concrete structures. This paper presents a mesoscopic numerical model, which is 2-D and 3-phases, to investigate the mechanism of chloride diffusion under FTCs in a quantitative manner. Unlike most of existing models, the present model considers the FTCs-induced damage affected chloride diffusion by adopting a time-dependent variable of porosity, which can not only reflect how freeze-thaw action affects the concrete pore structure, but also couple the freeze-thaw process together with the chloride diffusion process at time scale. The reliability of the proposed model is validated against a third-party experiment. Based on the obtained concentration distribution profiles, a series of significant influencing factors, i.e., w/c ratio, ITZ effects, external chloride concentration, aggregate volume fraction and inner temperature are clarified. A grey relational analysis is further conducted to rank the correlative degrees of influencing factors on diffusivity of chloride under FTCs. The findings of this study can bring insights to the preparation technique of concrete in cold or coastal regions as well as the durability prediction on existing concrete structures suffering chloride attack and freeze-thaw action.

Abstract:This paper evaluates the influence of mineral admixtures partially replacing cement, sea sand replacing quartz, sea water replacing fresh water on ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The fluidity and mechanical properties were studied. Besides, the impermeability, chloride resistance and freeze-thaw resistance were investigated. Failure modes, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and mechanical properties of UHPCs after freeze-thaw cycles were conducted. The results showed the fluidity of UHPC paste gradually increases with the improvement of water-binder ratio. It is recommended that the water-binder ratio of UHPC be set at 0.19. The fluidity also increases with the improvement of the content of slag, fly ash and water reducer, but decreases with the improvement of silica fume content. The flexural and compressive strengths of UHPC enhance with the improvement of the content of silica fume, but reduce with the improvement of the content of fly ash and slag. The UHPCs made of quartz sand, river sand and sea sand, all, achieve a high strength. UHPCs prepared at standard curing conditions, with or without steel fibers, mixed by artificial seawater and made of sea sand, exhibited excellent impermeability and chloride resistance. The frost resistant grade of all UHPC specimens prepared by standard curing are greater than F500 exhibiting excellent freeze-thaw resistance and sustainability.

Abstract:The presence of low-quality coarse aggregates and exposure to aggressive conditions are the two major problems with the durability of concrete. Therefore, an alternative concrete with enhanced properties to prevent fluid and ionic mobility compared to conventional concrete is needed. This study investigated the effects of main mix parameters on the transport characteristics and corrosion behavior of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). A set of 27 UHPFRC mixtures with different combinations of w/b ratio, cement, and silica fume contents, based on a 3 3 -factorial experiment design, were prepared and tested for water permeability, chloride penetrability, electrical resistivity, chloride profile, and corrosion current density. The results showed that UHPFRC mixtures exhibited excellent durability properties characterized by negligible water penetration (< 15 mm), negligible and very low chloride permeability when the w/b ratio was 0.15 (< 100 Coulombs) and up to 0.2 ( 20 kΩ cm) and pH values were 12.41–13.01, indicating the implausible likelihood of corrosion in the UHPFRC mixtures. This was confirmed through the corrosion current density measurements of reinforced UHPFRC specimens after 450 days of chloride exposure, which were below the critical limit for the corrosion initiation of reinforcing steel. Finally, the experimental data were statistically analyzed and fitted for all the listed tests, and models were developed for them using the regression analysis such that regression coefficients were within 0.90–0.99.

Abstract:Most concrete currently used in pavement is based on Portland cement (PC), being responsible for 8-10% of total CO 2 emission. Moreover, external pavements are subjected to exposure classes XF4 and XD3 which are related to corrosion and freeze-thaw. Freeze-thaw resistance is an important durability property of concrete, especially for concrete pavements that are subjected to the de-icing salts. This study was designed to explore the freeze-thaw resistance and mass scaling resistance of low carbon Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) in the presence of water and de-icing salts. Four different RCC mixes were used with a water/binder ratio of 0.45. PC was replaced with 80% ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in all mixes to develop low carbon concrete and move towards a more sustainable cementitious composite. To assess the effectiveness of smart engineered additives, superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) were used at 0.3% by weight of total binder, and Polypropylene (PP) fibre with 12-mm length at fibre volume fractions of 0.3% for the mitigation of freeze-thaw damage. The compressive strength, freeze-thaw resistance, and mass scaling resistance of concrete specimens were evaluated. The results indicate that both additives improved the compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance of concrete with and without de-icing salts. The inclusion of PP fibre was more effective compared to the addition of SAPs to mitigate the extent of internal structural damage and mass scaling of self-healing concrete mixes with respect to the reference concrete after 56 freeze-thaw cycles.

Abstract:This study aimed to the problem of durability and hydration of high performance concrete .In this paper , axial compression , electric flux , and thermal of concrete were tested , and high performance concrete which incorporated inhibitor and mineral admixture with different gradation were studied .The results showed that: With optimization design , 28 d strength of concrete specimens has increased by incorporation of mineral admixtures and migrating inhibitor , and the electrochemical property of the steel bar were with the further promoted .Meanwhile , Resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete is 39％lower than reference concrete and hydration heat of cementious material decreased by 37％than reference sample .While increasing incorporation of fly ash and mineral powder , performance of resistance to chloride ions and strength of concrete improved , and peak of hydration heat was also reduced .When mineral admixture content reached 22％, it is possible to achieve the best performance of concrete .The electric flux dropped significantly while mineral admixtures and migrating corrosion inhibitor were incorporated , and mineral admixtures and inhibitor have synergistic effect on durability of concrete and control of hydration heat .

Abstract:This study aims to investigate some physical and mechanical properties and resistance to triple-combined effect (abrasion, freeze-thaw and de-icing salt) of Interlocking concrete block pavement (ICBP), concrete cube pavement (CCP), concrete kerb (CK) and natural basalt stone pavement (BSP) products. The pavement products were supplied in different types/varieties from manufacturers in Erzurum-Turkey. The Bohme abrasion test was performed at the end of every 5 cycles with NaCl solution freeze-thaw cycles in addition to the physical and mechanical tests, which are important in applications. As a result, while the BSP and CK concrete pavements completed a total of 60 cycles without disintegrating with the least mass loss against the triple-combined effect, the concrete cube pavement-colourless (CCP-C) product disintegrated in the shortest time. It was determined that there can be significant differences in the mechanical and durability properties of the same type of ICBP products from different manufacturers. It was seen that the use of iron oxide-based pigments and colour type positively affect the mechanical and durability properties of Dry-cast Concrete (DCC) pavements. Additionally, it was determined that there are strong positive relationships between the durability performance of pavements and their compressive strength and Schmidt values, and negative relationships with their porosity.

Abstract:In seasonally frozen regions, concrete pavement is exposed to cycles of freeze-thaw and erosion from de-icing salt, which can lead to unfavorable service conditions and vulnerability to damage. This paper examines the compressive strength, flexural-tensile strength, abrasion resistance, permeability, and spacing factor of concrete, taking into account the impact of various curing conditions, de-icing salt solutions, and mass fractions on the concrete's freeze-thaw resistance. Two test methods, the single-face method and the fast-freezing method, were used to comparatively analyze the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete. The analysis was based on the surface scaling, water absorption rate, mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, and relative durability index. The results indicate that the presence of salt solution significantly worsened the degree of concrete damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles. The use of freeze-thaw media, specifically sodium chloride (), calcium chloride (), and potassium acetate () at mass fractions of 5%, 4.74%, and 5%, respectively, had the greatest impact on the surface scaling of concrete. However, their effect on the water absorption rate was inconsistent. When the freeze-thaw medium was water, the concrete's relative dynamic elastic modulus and relative durability index were 9.6% and 75.3% higher, respectively, for concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions compared to those cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions. We propose a comprehensive relative durability index () by combining the results of two methods of freeze-thaw tests. The of concrete cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions was 83.8% lower than that of concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions when exposed to a freeze-thaw medium of 5% mass fraction solution. To evaluate the salt freeze-thaw resistance of concrete pavement, it is recommended to use surface scaling and together.

Abstract:Airport pavement concrete often suffers from freeze–thawing damage in high latitude and cold areas. In addition, the use of aircraft deicer makes the airport pavement concrete suffer from salt-freezing damage. To improve the durability of airport pavement concrete, modified polyester synthetic fiber (FC), cellulose fiber (CF), and basalt fiber (BF) reinforced concrete were prepared in this paper. The mechanical strength, pore structure, and frost resistance (freeze–thawing and salt freezing) of fiber-reinforced concrete were investigated. The effects of the combined action of fiber (fiber type and content) and surface treatment methods (spraying silane and impregnating silane) on the frost resistance of concrete were investigated. The results show that the flexural strength of concrete is positively correlated with the elastic modulus of fiber, but has little effect on the compressive strength. Fiber can reduce mass loss and dynamic modulus loss of concrete subjected to frost damage. FC more effectively improved the frost resistance of concrete than CF. After 30 cycles of salt freezing, the spalling amount of concrete sprayed or soaked with silane was decreased by 65.5% and 55.5%, respectively. Adding fiber and impregnating silane reduced the spalled concrete by up to 70.5%. Spraying silane treatment is better than impregnating silane treatment in enhancing the frost resistance of concrete because a better silane condensation reaction is achieved with spraying silane.

Abstract:Concrete in saline or coastal settings exposed to freezing temperatures is frequently affected by coupling actions of sulfate assault and freeze–thaw degradation, reducing the service life of concrete structures significantly. This study conducted an accelerated freeze–thaw cycle test in pure water and Na2SO4 solution with a mass proportion of 5% to examine the coupling impact of sulfate freeze–thaw on the frost resistance of composite limestone powder (CLP) concrete. Combined with SEM and XRD methods, the performance degradation mechanisms of composite limestone powder (CLP) concrete in coupling sulfate freeze–thaw conditions were analyzed with a microscopic point of view. The findings demonstrated that limestone powder has a filling effect but the activity is low. When the content is 10~20%, the chemical response is higher than the physical response. The pozzolanic effect of fly ash and slag can improve the pore structure and improve the compactness of concrete. The “superposition effect” of limestone powder, fly ash, and slag can improve the frost resistance of CLP concrete. The scenario of salt freezing cycles has negative effects that are worse than those of water freezing cycles on the antifreeze performance of CLP concrete, including apparent morphology, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength. Sulfate’s activation effect boosts slag’s activity effect, which significantly promotes the antifreeze performance of concrete subjected to salt frozen cycles over water frozen cycles. The freeze–thaw damage model of CLP concrete under coupling sulfate freeze–thaw is established through theorem analysis and experiment statistics, laying a theoretical framework for the popularization and use of this concrete.

Abstract:Existing concrete structures in cool coastal areas are prone to be attacked by both chloride penetration and freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). This study establishes a multi-phase and multi-component ionic transport model for concrete serving in cold-climate coast or ocean engineering, aiming at further exploring chloride transport mechanism under freeze-thaw cycles in a quantitative manner. Unlike the most of existing work, herein the time-varying porosity is described and involved in both the binding isotherm and diffusion coefficient to consider the pore evolution induced by FTCs. By solving the modified mass conservation equations, the time-dependent relationship between the bound and free chlorides as well as the spatial-temporal distributions of multi-species is obtained by using this model, and its reliability is validated against third-party experimental data. Parametric analysis is carefully performed on a series of significant influencing factors (i.e., water-to-cement ratios, hydroxyl concentrations, external chloride concentrations and internal temperature variations), which affect chloride binding remarkably during freeze-thaw actions. Bayesian sense is applied to combine the common regularity of numerical models and individual information of experimental by updating the penetration depth, which can calculate a more reasonable penetration depth.

Abstract:Experimental research on durability of high-performance synthetic fibers reinforced concrete (HPSFRC) is conducted based on its excellent mechanical performance. The results indicate that HPSFRC shows superior resistances to sulfate attack and freezing-thawing over the ordinary concrete due to its excellent anti-crack performance. HPSFRC has an optimum dosage of high-performance synthetic fiber (HPSF) for achieving good mechanical performance and durability. Additionally, the influences of freezing-thawing cycles, concentration of sodium sulfate solution, and fiber content on the freezing-thawing resistance of HPSFRC are analyzed using response surface methodology. The analysis results show that the freezing-thawing cycles have the most significant influence on freezing-thawing resistance, followed by concentration of sodium sulfate solution and fiber content.

Abstract:One of the main applications of salt in civil engineering is its use as a de-icing agent on roads in cold areas. The purpose of this research is to find out the mechanical behaviour of an asphalt concrete when it is subjected to temperature changes and freeze–thaw cycles. These temperature interactions have been carried out for dry specimens, specimens submerged in distilled water and specimens submerged in salt water (5% of sodium chloride, NaCl). An AC16 Surf D bituminous mixture was evaluated under three types of temperature interaction: three reference series remained at a controlled temperature of 20 °C, another three series were subjected to five freeze–thaw cycles and the last three series have been subjected to one year outside in Santander (Spain). The mechanical behaviour of the mixture was determined by Indirect Tensile Strength Test (ITS), Water Sensitivity Test (ITSR) and Wheel Tracking Test, Dynamic Modulus Test and Fatigue Tests. The results of the tests show that, although the temperature changes have a negative effect on the mechanical properties, salt water protects the aggregate-binder adhesive, maintains the mechanical strength, increases the number of load cycles for any strain range and reduces the time that the mixture is in contact with frozen water.

Abstract:Frost resistance of plain concrete and air-entrained concrete subjected to freeze-thaw cycles in fresh water and 5 % and 7 % sodium sulfate solution are investigated in this paper. The test results show that the frost resistance of concrete is different in the different medium. The properties of concrete frozen in 5 % and 7 % sodium solution are different from that in fresh water, and entraining air into concrete properly can increase the frost resistance significantly whether in fresh water or in sulfate solution. Higher strength concrete could resist the degradation of freezing and thawing cycles in water, but some of them failed suddenly in midspan of specimens under the sulfate solution.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, Ahead of Print. This paper presents results of a research project completed to compare the ice-melting capabilities of environmentally friendly alternative deicers with average road salt. Tests were conducted in an environmental chamber where temperatures could be controlled to a certain degree to ensure that the test specimens were in the ideal condition for the most accurate results. There were 168 samples tested and their results were recorded and interpreted throughout this paper. The outcome of this research is based on the amount of brine solution produced during the melting tests, and the depth of ice penetrated for the penetration test. The data showed that all alternative deicers competed evenly or in some cases slightly outperformed rock salt. The results show that there is no clear preference that can be given to the materials; the preference could only be given based on factors not related to ice melting and penetration.
