Abstract:Cement materials with calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel as the main hydration product have good ability to immobilize heavy metal contaminants. In order to fundamentally understand the curing mechanism of cement materials, the atomic intensity distribution, kinetic properties of Zn2+ ions near the interface of CSH gels were investigated by molecular dynamics method by building a realistic CSH gel nanopore model and aqueous Zncl2 solution. The simulation results show that the interaction between zinc ions and hydrated calcium silicate surface is mainly through the desorption of calcium ions, which leads to the negative charge of the whole hydrated calcium silicate matrix, and thus the adsorption of Zn2+ by coulombic force, and thus the immobilization effect of Zn2+.

Abstract:Reactive force field molecular dynamics was utilized to investigate the structure, dynamics, and mechanical nature of different cations solvated in the nanometer-channel of highly disordered calcium silicate hydrate. The local structures of different cations bonded with hydroxyl groups are characterized by the long spatial correlation, bond angel distribution preference, and featured coordinated number, resembling those of the tetra-/penta-/octahedron for cation-oxygen structure in the defective region of the silicate glass. Al atoms in the interlayer region play a role in bridging the defective silicate chains and enhance the connectivity of the silicate skeleton. Dynamically, the mobility of ultraconfined water molecules and cations is significantly influenced by the ionic chemistry: the residence time for water molecules in the hydration shell of Al and Mg ions is longer than that in the environment of Na and Ca ions. Furthermore, uniaxial tension simulation provides insight that while both the stiffness and cohesive strength of the C-S-H gels are significantly improved due to the silicate-aluminate branch structure formation, sodium ions with unstable Na-O connection weaken the loading resistance of the C-S-H gels. During the tensile process, the hydrolytic reaction is also affected by the cationic type: water molecules coordinated with Al and Mg cations at high stress state are likely to decompose, but those aggregated with sodium ions are hard to be stretched broken due to the low failure stress.

Abstract:This study investigates the immobilization mechanisms of heavy metal ions in the C-S-H phase. Synthetic C-S-H phases were prepared via the precipitation method, incorporating five different ions (Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cr(III)). Structural analysis of the obtained material was conducted using vibrational spectroscopy (both FT-IR and Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic methods were primarily employed to evaluate the structural effects and polymerization degree of the resulting C-S-H phase. Morphological changes were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively). Our findings reveal several mechanisms for immobilizing heavy metal cations: precipitation of insoluble compounds (particularly notable for Ni(II) and Cr(III)), replacement of Ca(II) ions within the silicate structure (evident in the crystallization of Ca(OH) 2 in samples containing Cd(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) in minimal quantities), and strong bonding of certain metals (such as Pb(II)) with the C-S-H phase structure. These insights contribute to understanding the potential applications of C-S-H phases in heavy metal immobilization.

Abstract:C-S-H gel is the origin of cohesion of cement and deteriorates with decalcification. However, the molecular process underlying its complex chemical reactions and structure/properties evolution is mostly unexplored. Herein, the influence of decalcification on calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is studied by molecular dynamics and experiments. The results show, during the decalcification, the transformation of C-S-H molecular structure from lamellar crystal into cross-linked glassy structure, transformation from bound water into -OH groups, and transformation of dynamics characteristics from lattice vibration at fixed sites into diffusion, which would be exacerbated by the dissociation of intralayer calcium. Mechanically, for both nano and micro/macro scale, tensile property of C-S-H depends on interlayer bonding and so is weakest at complete dissociation of interlayer calcium, whereas compressive property decreases continuously with decalcification. The interlayer bonding basically determines the threshold of micro/macro mechanical properties of C-S-H gel. This study provides a well example for molecular-scale exploration of the full process of aluminosilicate mineral dissolution.

Effect of Calcium to Silicon Ratio on the Microstructure of Hydrated Calcium Silicate Gels Prepared under Medium Alkalinity

Abstract:The hydration of solid waste cementitious materials has a medium alkalinity and low calcium-to-silicate ratio (Ca/Si). Understanding how the hydration products behave in such a system is very important to optimize and create new solid waste cementitious materials. This paper investigates the effect of Ca/Si on the generated C-S-H gels under medium alkalinity. C-S-H gels were prepared by the double decomposition method at room temperature, and XRD, SEM, TG-DSC, XPS, and NMR examined the microstructure of C-S-H gels. Results show that the Cl- concentration in the solution controlled its pH, ranging between 11.1 and 12.8. However, the Ca/Si of C-S-H gels increased with the initial Ca/Si in solution. However, it couldn't increase higher than 0.8 when the C-S-H was synthesized at a pH of about 12. With the increase in Ca/Si, the agglomeration of C-S-H gels increased, and the C-S-H became crystallized, the temperature of beta -wollastonite formation enhanced. However, the beta -wollastonite formation temperature of C-S-H gel synthesized under medium alkalinity was lower than that under high alkalinity. The increase in the Ca/Si of C-S-H gel decreased the Q3 type tetrahedra formation and increased the Q2 type tetrahedra formation. The variation of H2O/Si is related to the amount of Q2 and Q3 type tetrahedra in the C-S-H gel, which is determined by the synthesis method. Medium alkalinity could assist in generating C-S-H gel with low Ca/Si and high MCL. The results of this study could guide new solid wasted-based contentious materials production.

Abstract:In this study, thermodynamic and kinetic models are established to describe the early hydration of tricalcium silicate, by means of considering of dissolution and precipitation mechanisms separately. Since both the dissolution of C3S and the precipitation of hydration products are affected by the ions concentrations, these two procedures are coupled via the aqueous properties of the solution. In this model, a critical length of outer-CSH is introduced to modify the boundary nucleation and growth. The influence of hydration temperature and particle size distribution on the early hydration kinetics of C3S are evaluated with the newly developed model. A good simulation is obtained.

Abstract:The hydration and dissolution of tri-calcium silicate mineral is of great importance for guiding the material design. In order to understand the hydration mechanism of C3S mineral in sodium sulfate solution, molecular dynamics was employed to construct three interface models of C3S and Na2SO4 solution of 0 mol/L, 0.79 mol/L and 1.58 mol/L and the structure, dynamics and dissolution properties of the interfacial species were investigated. Due to hydrophilic nature of C3S surface, the water molecule in hydrate layer deeply tessellated on the vacancy surface region shows high intensity packing, ordered arrangement, enlargement of the dipolar moment value and orientation preference. With progressively increasing simulation time, the hydroxyl groups and calcium atoms in the high reactive surface gradually escape from the substrate bonding restriction and diffuse away to the solution region. Furthermore, both ions prefer to adsorbing on the surface of tri-calcium silicate mineral: the highly solvated surface calcium ions associate with the oxygen sites in the sulfate ions, forming the CaSO4 ionic pairs in the interfacial region; the sodium ions are attracted by the non-bridging oxygen in the silicate monomers, forming NaO connection. The surface adsorbed water molecules, sulfate and sodium ions, strongly associated with the calcium atoms and hydroxyl groups, form a ionic and hydrate layer, stabilizing the tri-calcium silicate surface and inhibiting the dissolution of ions in C3S. With increasing ions’ concentration, the sulfate and sodium ions in the solution are more probable to form cation-anion pairs and further accumulate to the ionic cluster.

Abstract:Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel is the most important hydration product of cement. It influences the mechanical properties of resulting materials and plays an important role in the adsorption and immobilization of heavy metal ions. Research in the structure of CSH gel and its ability for heavy metal immobilization enables the development of tailored cement-based materials, a feature that holds significant future potential. In this study, CSH gel was synthesized under different pH and Ca/Si conditions. Structural and morphological changes in CSH gel were investigated using modern technologies. The results revealed that both pH and Ca/Si ratios were important factors influencing the structure of CSH gel. During the formation of CSH, both Cr3+ and Pb2+ can be incorporated into CSH gel, and promoting the formation of calcium hydroxide Cr3+ can also replace Si4+ in the Si-O bond.

Abstract:Abstract Dissolution of minerals in water is ubiquitous in nature and industry, especially for the calcium silicate species. However, the behavior of such a complex chemical reaction is still unclear at atomic level. Here, we show that the ab initio molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations enable quantitative analyses of reaction pathways, thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcium ion dissolution from the tricalcium silicate (Ca 3 SiO 5 ) surface. The calcium sites with different coordination environments lead to different reaction pathways and free energy barriers. The low free energy barriers result in that the detachment of the calcium ion is a ligand exchange and auto-catalytic process. Moreover, the water adsorption, proton exchange and diffusion of water into the surface layer accelerate the leaching of the calcium ion from the surface step by step. The discovery in this work thus would be a landmark for revealing the mechanism of tricalcium silicate hydration.

Abstract:As the main components of Portland cement, calcium silicates show substantial differences in their hydration reactivity which have not been fully explained. A comprehensive comparison of the initial hydration process of calcium silicates, namely dicalcium silicate (C2S) and tricalcium silicate (C3S), was conducted using molecular dynamics simulations. The initial hydration process was divided into three stages using cut-off times of 0.001 ns and 3 ns. The hydration of M-3-C3S (010) was more evident than that of beta-C2S (100), supported by the hydroxylation degree, radial distribution function, atomic density profile, etc. The coordination number of the surface Ca atoms might be the underlying reason for such a difference. Interactions between cement surfaces and water molecules were mainly characterised by solid O-H bonding and Ca-water O bonding. Dissolution of Ca atoms was observed, although quite scarce, while no dissolution of Si atoms was observed.

Abstract:Calcium aluminosilicate hydrate has attracted significant interests, because of its low carbon footprint, while basic questions persist concerning its molecular-level properties. In this work, the material chemistry of C-A-S-H is systematically investigated, and its microstructure at atomic scale is reexamined based on first-principles modeling and simulation. We find that the cross-link between interlayers is crucial for mechanical strengths, which is responsible for similar to 36.2% enhancement of the bulk modulus and similar to 10.0% of shear modulus. Anomalous C-A-S-H exhibits zeolitic features with interatomic Al-O-Si bonding. With the reversible structural transformation and other physical incentives, C-A-S-H can be categorized into soft porous crystals. Aluminum substitution induces interfacial strengthening in calcium silicate hydrates by raising tensile and compressive strength by, similar to 76.1 and similar to 16.9%, respectively. Uncovering these reinforcement mechanisms, including the interlayer strengthening, provides theoretical underpinnings for future design for green cement with ultrahigh performance.

Abstract:Understanding the energetics and kinetics of chloride in cement-based materials is critical to identify effective ways to control chloride diffusion. Here, we performed an ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation on interfacial activities to reveal the reaction mechanism and dynamic nature of chloride. Chloride ions mainly distributed in the electric double layer (EDL) of positively charged surface ([Ca2Al(OH)6]+) through electrostatic interactions with calcium ions and protons, while sodium ions were mainly confined within the interface region between the negatively charged surface ([Cl·2H2O]−) and hydrocalumite main layer, forming various ionic complexes. The above interactions are driven from the nucleophilic nature of bound chlorides and electrophilic nature of water hydrogen and calcium ions. These findings were further confirmed by dynamic analyses, local structures and electronic properties as well as comparing with experiments and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We finally inferred that the chloride binding properties can be tailored by regulating the Ca/Al ratio of hydrocalumite main layer.

Abstract:It has recently been demonstrated that the addition of zinc can enhance the mechanical strength of tricalcium silicates (C3S) upon hydration, but the structure of the main hydration product of cement, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), in zinc-modified formulations remains unresolved. Here, we combine 29Si DNP-enhanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), density functional theory (DFT)-based chemical shift computations, and molecular dynamics (MD) modeling to determine the atomic-level structure of zinc-modified C-S-H. The structure contains two main new silicon species (Q(1,Zn) and Q(2p,Zn)) where zinc substitutes Q(1) silicon species in dimers and bridging Q(2b) silicon sites, respectively. Structures determined as a function of zinc content show that zinc promotes an increase in the dreierketten mean chain lengths.

Abstract:Abstract High belite cement has a wide application potential due to its low energy consumption, low CO 2 emission, and excellent durability performance. Due to the low hydration rate and strength development at an early age, the activation of beta-dicalcium silicate (β-C 2 S) crystallographic structure is essential to improve the early strength of high belite cement. In this study, the β-C 2 S phase is activated by dissolving Ba 2+ ions into the crystal lattice to improve the hydration rate. Unlike the traditional analysis methods of thermodynamics and dynamics theory, the first principle and density functional theory were applied to study the effect of Ba 2+ ions on the activation of β-C 2 S, especially on the crystallographic structure, lattice parameters, and electronic structure change. The crystallographic structure of β-C 2 S can be activated by doping Ba atom and the crystal formation energy increases and the bandgap between VBM and CBM become narrow in the activated β-C 2 S crystallographic structure. Comparing the Ca 2+ substitution in [CaO 6 ] or [CaO 8 ], the lattice deformation and hydraulic reactivity is more significant in Ba 2 -C 2 S and Ba 22 -C 2 S. The first principle and density functional theory explains the change of the electronic structure of the activated crystallographic structure and provides a theoretical basis for the purposeful design of material structures.

Abstract:The cement-based matrices are preferred candidates in disposing nuclear waste due to the immobilization role of the calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel. To better understand the immobilization mechanism of cementitious materials, molecular dynamics was utilized to investigate the intensity distribution, local structure and dynamics properties of Cs+ ions in the vicinity of the calcium silicate surface. The strong inner-sphere adsorbed cesium ions were restricted by coordinated oxygen atoms in bridging and pair silicate tetrahedron and water molecules were fixed in the silicate channel by H-bonds network. On the other hand, the adsorption of chloride ion, repulsed by the negatively charged silicate surface, is mainly attributed to the formation of the cation-anion ionic pair near the interface. As compared with those of the solvated ions in the solution, the relaxation time of water in the hydration shell of adsorbed Cs+ is significantly increased and the diffusion coefficient of adsorbed Cs+ is dramatically reduced. Furthermore, based on the intensity profile and resident-time analysis, the adsorption capacities of monovalent cations on the C-S-H surface increase with decrease in the ionic radius, following the sequence of Na+ >> K+ > Cs+. This study provides a molecular-level understanding of the immobilization mechanism of different ions in the C-S-H gel pores.
The influence of [H2SiO4]2- from mineral admixtures on the hydration process of tricalcium silicate: a DFT study

Abstract:Mineral admixtures are increasingly being employed in concrete production to replace cement, thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions. However, leaching of silicon can exert a significant influence on the cement hydration process. In this study, density functional theory was used to study the influence of [H 2 SiO 4 ] 2- on the adsorption and dissociation of water on the C 3 S surface in the initial hydration process. The results demonstrate that [H 2 SiO 4 ] 2- can promote the dissociation of water molecules around it. This is mainly due to the fact that the two non-hydroxylated O atoms of [H 2 SiO 4 ] 2- can adsorb the dissociated H from water molecules, thus preserving more active ionic O sites on the C 3 S surface, thereby promoting the dissociation of water molecules. The charge transfer and bonding mechanisms of the adsorption of [H 2 SiO 4 ] 2- with its hydration shell were also calculated. This work provides an atomic-level understanding of the influence of the aluminum phase from the mineral admixture on the initial hydration of cement and also offers certain assistance for the widespread application of mineral admixtures.

Abstract:Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product of Portland cement, while fundamental questions persist regarding its colloidal structure and water content. In this work, we developed a full atomistic C-S-H colloid model and investigated the physical and mechanical properties at different gel water concentrations. Water confined in nanometer gel pores degrades the mechanical properties of C-S-H because of its hydrolysis effect. A “ductile to brittle” transition was observed in the C-S-H colloid model with increasing gel water contents, evolving from transgranular failure to intergranular fracture. The gel water confined in nanometer-sized pores displays glassy characteristics, and it acts as a lubricant and facilitates structure distortions during the deformation. We elucidated the topology effect of the hydrogen bond network on the evolution of the viscoelasticity of C-S-H at different humidities. This work sheds light on the role of water in C-S-H colloids from nanostructure perspectives.

Abstract:The unsaturated transport of water and ions in concrete structures accelerates the corrosion of reinforcing steel bars. Unfortunately, previous macroscopic and microscopic experimental studies have provided little clarity on the transport mechanisms of ions in calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gels. This paper presents molecular dynamics simulations performed to investigate the effect of ion species and concentration during unsaturated transport processes. The transport rate of NaCl solutions at any given concentration significantly exceeds that of CaCl 2 solutions because of desorption of intralayer calcium ions in the substrate. Additionally, the electric double layer effect of the realistic C-S-H gel substrate is more pronounced in NaCl solution than in CaCl 2 solution and becomes stronger as the concentration increases in both cases. These insights into the effects of ion species and concentration on unsaturated ion transport and adsorption in realistic C-S-H gel nanopores will help guide the development of cement-based materials with improved corrosion resistance.

In this work, density functional theory static calculation and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation are used to investigate the hydration properties of Cu-doping β-C2S. The static calculation shows that Cu-doping influences the crystal and electronic structure of β-C2S and leads to charge localization. Cu-doping also promotes the dissociation adsorption on the surface around the Cu atom and weakens the chemical constraint on Ca–OW and HW–OS. The AIMD simulation shows that water molecules on the Cu-doped β-C2S(1 0 0) surface prefer dissociation adsorption and maintain the dissociated state for a long lifetime. The local weak interactions between water and the Cu atom are enhanced, and the bond concentration of Ca/Cu–OW on the whole surface decreases. This higher hydration reactivity by introducing Cu atoms would promote the application of copper tailings and the C2S phase for cement green production.

Abstract:Molecular Dynamics was employed to investigate the interaction of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the primary hydration product of cement based materials, and chloride, causing severe durable problems of concrete. The 11Å tobermorite structure was chosen to describe the C-S-H structure and the CLAYFF force field was used. It is observed in the simulation that there are no bound chlorides at 303K, while a fraction of chlorides appear in the adsorption district of tobermorite/solution interface at 323K indicating the temperature increase can improve chloride sorption capacity of C-S-H. The formation of Ca-Cl cluster is found on the surface of tobermorite, which is assumed to promote the chloride sorption. The experimental results of sorption isotherms of C-S-H in CaCl2 and NaCl aqueous solutions with the same chloride concentration have proved this point. Other researchers have made the same conclusion by means of molecular dynamics modeling, NMR tests or zeta potential experiments.
