Abstract:The synthesis of zinc borate glass matrix of composition 10Na 2 O–20ZnO–10SiO 2 –(60–x) B 2 O 3 –xSnO 2 mol% (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) has been carried out by the melt-quenching method. The effects of SnO 2 /B 2 O 3 replacements on the structural, optical, thermal conductivity and electrical characteristic of synthesized glasses were investigated. Their amorphous nature has been shown by XRD profiles. The produced glasses exhibited densities ranging from 2.822 to 2.634 g/cm 3 and molar volumes ranging from 24.890 to 27.133 cm 3 /mol. The glass structure became more rigid as the SnO 2 /B 2 O 3 replacements increased, according to FTIR measurements. UV–visible absorption spectra showed a blue shift with an increase in both direct and indirect optical band gap energy. With an increase in SnO 2 content, the refractive index values (n) decreased. Numerous optical characteristics, including cationic polarizability, molar refraction, reflection loss and optical basicity were determined and examined in relation to structural changes. The metallization criterion exhibits insulating behavior. The conductivity measurements revealed that all investigated glass compositions are insulators. The low value of thermal conductivity of the glass doped with 0.5 mol% SnO 2 (0.2 w/mk) revealed that this composition can be considered a thermal insulator and is promising for many thermoelectric applications such as thermal barrier coatings, gas turbines, and green houses.
