Abstract:In the present work, we establish sufficient conditions for a Dirichlet series induced by general frequencies to be universal with respect to vertical translations. Our results can be applied to known universal objects such as Hurwitz zeta functions and also can provide new examples of universal Dirichlet series including the alternating prime zeta function $\sum_{n\geq1}(-1)^np_n^{-s}$.

Abstract:We call an element $U$ conditionally universal for a sequential convergence space $\mathbf{\Omega}$ with respect to a minimal system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ in a continuously and densely embedded Banach space $\mathcal{X}\hookrightarrow\mathbf{\Omega}$ if the partial sums of its phase-modified Fourier series is dense in $\mathbf{\Omega}$. We will call the element $U$ almost universal if the change of phases (signs) needs to be performed only on a thin subset of Fourier coefficients. In this paper we prove the existence of an almost universal element under certain assumptions on the system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$. We will call a function $U$ asymptotically conditionally universal in a space $L^1(\mathcal{M})$ if the partial sums of its phase-modified Fourier series is dense in $L^1(F_m)$ for an ever-growing sequence of subsets $F_m\subset\mathcal{M}$ with asymptotically null complement. Here we prove the existence of such functions $U$ under certain assumptions on the system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$. Moreover, we show that every integrable function can be slightly modified to yield such a function $U$. In particular, we establish the existence of almost universal functions for $L^p([0,1])$, $p\in(0,1)$, and asymptotically conditionally universal functions for $L^1([0,1])$, with respect to the trigonometric system.

Abstract:We prove that, for functions in the Orlicz class LloglogLloglogloglogL, lacunary subsequences of the Fourier and the Walsh-Fourier series converge almost everywhere. Our integrability condition is less stringent than the homologous assumption in the almost everywhere convergence theorems of Lie (Fourier case) and Do-Lacey (Walsh-Fourier case), where the quadruple logarithmic term is replaced by a triple logarithm. Our proof of the Walsh-Fourier case is self-contained and, in antithesis to Do and Lacey's argument, avoids the use of Antonov's lemma, arguing directly via novel weak-L^p bounds for the Walsh-Carleson operator.

Unconditional convergence of general Fourier series

Abstract:S. Banach, in particular, proved that for any function, even $f(x) = 1,$ where $x\in[0,1],$ the convergence of its Fourier series with respect to the general orthonormal systems (ONS) is not guaranteed. In this paper, we find conditions for the functions $\varphi_{n}$ of an ONS $(\varphi_n),$ under which the Fourier series of functions $f\in Lip_1$ are unconditionally convergent almost everywhere. During our research, we mainly used the properties of the sequences of linear functionals on the Banach spaces to prove the main theorems we presented in this article. Our research has concluded that the aforementioned conditions do exist and are the best possible in a certain sense. We have also found that any ONS contains a subsystem such that the Fourier series of any function $f\in Lip_1$ is unconditionally convergent. Further, the precondition presented in Theorem \ref{theorem1.1}, which demands that the Fourier series of the function $f=1$ be convergent, is adequate, meaning that it does not make the actual conditions of Theorem \ref{theorem1.1} redundant. We have shown that the solution for these types of problems for the general ONS is trivial for the classical ONS (trigonometric, Haar, and Walsh systems).

Abstract:In this paper we collect several examples of convergence of functions of random processes to generalized functionals of those processes. We remark that the limit is always finitely absolutely continuous with respect to Wiener measure. We try to unify those examples in terms of convergence of probability measures in Banach spaces. The key notion is the condition of uniform finite absolute continuity.

Abstract:By means of several examples, we motivate that universal properties are the simplest way to solve a given mathematical problem, explaining in this way why they appear everywhere in mathematics. In particular, we present the co-universal property of Schwartz distributions, as the simplest way to have derivatives of continuous functions, Colombeau algebra as the simplest quotient algebra where representatives of zero are infinitesimal, and generalized smooth functions as the universal way to associate set-theoretical maps of non-Archimedean numbers defined by nets of smooth functions (e.g. regularizations of distributions) and having arbitrary derivatives. Each one of these properties yields a characterization up to isomorphisms of the corresponding space. The paper requires only the notions of category, functor, natural transformation and Schwartz's distributions, and introduces the notion of universal solution using a simple and non-abstract language.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper we describe the status of the art of this subject. In the second part we present and motivate some new results. Indeed, we introduce some new weighted maximal operators of the partial sums of the Walsh-Fourier series. We prove that for some "optimal" weights these new operators indeed are bounded from the martingale Hardy space $H_{1}(G)$ to the space $\text{weak}-L_{1}(G),$ but is not bounded from $H_{1}(G)$ to the space $L_{1}(G).$

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the notion of universality for classes of candidate common Lyapunov functions of linear switched systems. On the one hand, we prove that a family of absolutely homogeneous functions is universal as soon as it approximates arbitrarily well every convex absolutely homogeneous function for the $C^0$ topology of the unit sphere. On the other hand, we prove several obstructions for a class to be universal, showing, in particular, that families of piecewise-polynomial continuous functions whose construction involves at most $l$ polynomials of degree at most $m$ (for given positive integers $l,m$) cannot be universal.

Abstract:Unlike the classical theory of Fourier series which deals with decomposition of a function into sinusoidal waves the Vilenkin (Walsh) functions are rectangular waves. The development of the theory of Vilenkin-Fourier series has been strongly influenced by the classical theory of trigonometric series but there are a lot of differences also. The aim of my master thesis is to discuss, develop and apply the newest developments of this fascinating theory connected to modern harmonic analysis. In particular, we investigate Nörlund means but only in the case when their coefficients are monotone and prove convergence in Lebesgue and Vilenkin-Lebesgue points. Since almost everywhere points are Lebesgue and Vilenkin-Lebesgue points for any integrable functions we obtain almost everywhere convergence of such summability methods.

Abstract:We investigate the subsequence $\{t_{2^n}f \}$ of Nörlund means with respect to the Walsh system generated by non-increasing and convex sequences. In particular, we prove that a big class of such summability methods are not bounded from the martingale Hardy spaces $H_p$ to the space $weak-L_p $ for $0<p<1/(1+\alpha) $, where $0<\alpha<1$. Moreover, some new related inequalities are derived. As application, some well-known and new results are pointed out for well-known summability methods, especially for Nörlund logarithmic means and Cesàro means.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study for the general theory of non-Abelian Fourier series of integrable functions on the homogeneous space $\mathbf{\Gamma}\backslash SE(d)$, where $SE(d)$ is the special Euclidean group in dimension $d$, and $\mathbf{\mathbf{\Gamma}}$ is a discrete and co-compact subgroup of $SE(d)$. Suppose that $\mu$ is the finite $SE(d)$-invariant measure on the right coset space $\mathbf{\Gamma}\backslash SE(d)$, normalized with respect to Weil's formula. The analytic aspects of the proposed method works for any given orthonormal basis of the Hilbert function space $L^2(\mathbf{\Gamma}\backslash SE(d),\mu)$. The paper is concluded with some convolution and Plancherel formulas.

Generalized Fourier quasicrystals, almost periodic sets, and zeros of Dirichlet series

Abstract:Let $S(z)$ be an absolutely convergent Dirichlet series with a bounded spectrum and only real zeros $a_n$, let $\mu$ be the sum of unit masses at points $a_n$. It is proven that the Fourier transform $\hat\mu$ in the sense of distributions is a purely point measure. Conversely, in terms of the properties of $\hat\mu$, a sufficient condition was found when $a_n$ are zeros of an absolutely convergent Dirichlet series with bounded spectrum. Also, in terms of the properties of $\hat\mu$, a criterion is established that $a_n$ are zeros of an almost periodic entire function of exponential growth. In all cases, the multiplicity of zeros is taken into account. Almost periodic sets, introduced by B.Levin and M.Krein in 1948, play important role in our investigations. In particular, we show a new simple representation of such sets.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss the applications of martingale Hardy Orlicz–Lorentz–Karamata spaces in Fourier analysis. More precisely, we show that the partial sums of the Walsh–Fourier series converge to the function in norm if with $1<p_-\le $<="" p_+ . The equivalence of maximal operators on martingale Hardy Orlicz–Lorentz–Karamata spaces is presented. The Fejér summability method is also studied and it is proved that the maximal Fejér operator is bounded from martingale Hardy Orlicz–Lorentz–Karamata spaces to Orlicz–Lorentz–Karamata spaces. As a consequence, we obtain conclusions about almost everywhere and norm convergence of Fejér means.

On the local Fourier uniformity problem for small sets

Abstract:We consider vanishing properties of exponential sums of the Liouville function $\lambda$ of the form $$ \lim_{H\to\infty}\limsup_{X\to\infty}\frac{1}{\log X}\sum_{m\leq X}\frac{1}{m}\sup_{\alpha\in C}\bigg|\frac{1}{H}\sum_{h\leq H}\lambda(m+h)e^{2\pi ih\alpha}\bigg|=0, $$ where $C\subset\mathbb{T}$. The case $C=\mathbb{T}$ corresponds to the local $1$-Fourier uniformity conjecture of Tao, a central open problem in the study of multiplicative functions with far-reaching number-theoretic applications. We show that the above holds for any closed set $C\subset\mathbb{T}$ of zero Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we prove that extending this to any set $C$ with non-empty interior is equivalent to the $C=\mathbb{T}$ case, which shows that our results are essentially optimal without resolving the full conjecture. We also consider higher-order variants. We prove that if the linear phase $e^{2\pi ih\alpha}$ is replaced by a polynomial phase $e^{2\pi ih^t\alpha}$ for $t\geq 2$ then the statement remains true for any set $C$ of upper box-counting dimension $<1/t$. The statement also remains true if the supremum over linear phases is replaced with a supremum over all nilsequences coming form a compact countable ergodic subsets of any $t$-step nilpotent Lie group. Furthermore, we discuss the unweighted version of the local $1$-Fourier uniformity problem, showing its validity for a class of ``rigid'' sets (of full Hausdorff dimension) and proving a density result for all closed subsets of zero Lebesgue measure.

Abstract:We prove the Voronin universality theorem for the multiple Hurwitz zeta-function with rational or transcendental parameters in $\mathbb{C}^n$ answering a question of Matsumoto. In particular this implies that the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-function is universal in several complex variables and gives the first example of a Dirichlet series that is universal in more than one variable.

Abstract:We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for universality limits for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and related systems. One of our results is that the Christoffel-Darboux kernel has sine kernel asymptotics at a point $\xi$, with regularly varying scaling, if and only if the orthogonality measure (spectral measure) has a unique tangent measure at $\xi$ and that tangent measure is the Lebesgue measure. This includes all prior results with absolutely continuous or singular measures. Our work is not limited to bulk universality; we show that the Christoffel-Darboux kernel has a regularly varying scaling limit with a nontrivial limit kernel if and only if the orthogonality measure has a unique tangent measure at $\xi$ and that tangent measure is not a point mass. The possible limit kernels correspond to homogeneous de Branges spaces; in particular, this equivalence completely characterizes several prominent universality classes such as hard edge universality, Fisher-Hartwig singularities, and jump discontinuities in the weights. The main part of the proof is the derivation of a new homeomorphism. In order to directly apply to the Christoffel-Darboux kernel, this homeomorphism is between measures and chains of de Branges spaces, not between Weyl functions and Hamiltonians. In order to handle limits with power law weights, this homeomorphism goes beyond the more common setting of Poisson-finite measures, and allows arbitrary power bounded measures.

Universality for free fermions and the local Weyl law for semiclassical Schrödinger operators

Abstract:We study local asymptotics for the spectral projector associated to a Schrödinger operator $-\hbar^2\Delta+V$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in the semiclassical limit as $\hbar\to0$. We prove local uniform convergence of the rescaled integral kernel of this projector towards a universal model, inside the classically allowed region as well as on its boundary. This implies universality of microscopic fluctuations for the corresponding free fermions (determinantal) point processes, both in the bulk and around regular boundary points. Our results apply for a general class of smooth potentials in arbitrary dimension $n\ge 1$. These results are complemented by studying both macroscopic and mesoscopic fluctuations of the point process. We obtain tail bounds for macroscopic linear statistics and, provided $n\geq 2$, a central limit theorem for both macroscopic and mesoscopic linear statistics in the bulk.

Limits of sequence of Tensor Product Operators associated with the Walsh-Paley system

Abstract:It is well-known that to establish the almost everywhere convergence of a sequence of operators on $L_1$-space, it is sufficient to obtain a weak $(1,1)$-type inequality for the maximal operator corresponding to the sequence of operators. However, in practical applications, the establishment of the mentioned inequality for the maximal operators is very tricky and difficult job. In the present paper, the main aim is a novel outlook at above mentioned inequality for the tensor product of two weighted one-dimensional Walsh-Fourier series. Namely, our main idea is naturally to consider uniformly boundedness conditions for the sequences which imply the weak type estimation for the maximal operator of the tensor product. More precisely, we are going to establish weak type of inequality for the tensor product of two dimensional maximal operators while having the uniform boundedness of the corresponding one dimensional operators. Moreover, the convergence of the tensor product of operators is established at the two dimensional Walsh-Lebesgue points.

Abstract:The aim of the current paper is to determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weights $\mathbf{q}=\{q_k\}$, ensuring that the sequence of operators $\left\{ T_{n}^{\left( \mathbf{q}\right) }f\right\} $ associated with Walsh system, is convergent almost everywhere for all integrable function $f$. The article also examines the convergence of a sequence of tensor product operators denoted as $\left\{ T_{n}^{( \mathbf{q})}\otimes T_{n}^{( \mathbf{p})}\right\}$ involving functions of two variables. We point out that recent research by Gát and Karagulyan (2016) demonstrated that this sequence of tensor product operators cannot converge almost everywhere for every integrable function. In this paper, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weight are provided which ensure that the sequence of the mentioned operators converges in measure on $L_{1}$.
