Abstract:Cameron-Liebler line classes were introduced in \cite{CL}, and motivated by a question about orbits of collineation groups of $\PG(3,q)$. These line classes have appeared in different contexts under disguised names such as Boolean degree one functions, regular codes of covering radius one, and tight sets. In this paper we construct an infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes in $\PG(3,q)$ with new parameter $x=(q+1)^2/3$ for all prime powers $q$ congruent to 2 modulo 3. The examples obtained when $q$ is an odd power of two represent the first infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes in $\PG(3,q)$, $q$ even.

Abstract:Lie bialgebras on k3 and the corresponding Lagrange varieties are classified by means of a pair of quadratic forms on k4, where k is a field whose characteristic is not 2. It turns out that any Lagrange variety is composed of two (possibly degenerate) quadratic surfaces in kP3 defined by the above quadratic forms respectively. © 2009 Heldermann Verlag.

On the $PGL_2(q)$-orbits of lines of $PG(3,q)$ and binary quartic forms

Abstract:We study the problem of classifying the lines of the projective $3$-space $PG(3,q)$ over a finite field $GF(q)$ into orbits of the group $G=PGL(2,q)$ of linear symmetries of the twisted cubic $C$. A generic line neither intersects $C$ nor lies in any of its osculating planes. While the non-generic lines have been classified into $G$-orbits in literature, it has been an open problem to classify the generic lines into $G$-orbits. For a general field $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, the twisted cubic determines a symplectic polarity on $\mathbb P^3$. In the Klein representation of lines of $\mathbb P^3$, the tangent lines of $C$ are represented by a degree $4$ rational normal curve in a hyperplane $\mathcal H$ of the second exterior power $\mathbb P^5$ of $\mathbb P^3$. Atiyah studied the lines of $\mathbb P^3$ with respect to $C$, in terms of the geometries of these two curves. Polar duality of lines on $\mathbb P^3$ corresponds to Hodge duality on $\mathbb P^5$, and $\mathcal H$ is the hyperplane of Hodge self-dual elements of $\mathbb P^5$. We show that $\mathcal H$ can be identified in a $PGL_2$-equivariant way with the space of binary quartic forms over $F$, and that pairs of polar dual lines of $\mathbb P^3$ correspond to binary quartic forms whose apolar invariant is a square. We first solve the open problem of classifying binary quartic forms over $GF(q)$ into $G$-orbits, and then use it to solve the main problem.

On the variety of tritangential planes to a general K3 surface of degree 6 and genus 4 in $\mP^4$

Abstract:Let $S\subset \mP^4$ be a general K3 surface of degree 6 and genus 4. In this paper we study the irreducible variety $X_S$ of \emph{tritangential planes} to $S$ whose general point is a plane that intersects $S$ in a curvilinear scheme of length six supported at three non collinear points. The variety $X_S$ can be identified as the relevant part of the fixed locus of the so called \emph{Beauville involution} defined on the Hilbert scheme $S[3]$ of 0--dimensional schemes of length three of $S$. In this paper we prove that: (a) $X_S$ has dimension 3, is irreducible and smooth, except for 210 points that are at most of multiplicity 2 for $X_S$; (b) $X_S$, in its natural embedding in the Grassmannian $\mathbb G(2,4)\subset \mP^9$ of planes in $\mP^4$, has degree $152$.

Abstract:Subsequent to the previous paper [Tak5], we are concerned with the classification of complex prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-folds of anti-canonical codimension 4 which are produced, as weighted complete intersections of appropriate weighted projectivizations of certain affine varieties related with $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations. Such affine varieties or their appropriate weighted projectivizations (possibly allowing some coordinates have weights $0$) are called key varieties for prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds.

Abstract:We study the topological complexity, in the sense of Smale, of three enumerative problems in algebraic geometry: finding the 27 lines on cubic surfaces, the 28 bitangents and the 24 inflection points on quartic curves. In particular, we prove lower bounds for the topological complexity of any algorithm that finds solutions to the three problems and for the Schwarz genera of their associated covers. The key is to understand cohomology classes of the classifying spaces of projective unitary groups $PU_n$.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:The group $PGL(2,q)$ acts $3$-transitively on the projective line $GF(q) \cup \{\infty\}$. Thus, an orbit of its action on the $k$-subsets of the projective line is the block set of a $3$-$(q+1,k,\lambda)$ design. We find the parameters of the designs formed by the orbit of a block of the form $\langle \theta^r \rangle$ or $\langle \theta^r \rangle \cup \{ 0\}$, where $\theta$ is a primitive element of $GF(q)$.

Birational rigidity of quartic three-folds with a double point of rank 3

Abstract:We prove that a general three-dimensional quartic $V$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^4$, the only singularity of which is a double point of rank 3, is a birationally rigid variety. Its group of birational self-maps is, up to the finite subgroup of biregular automorphisms, a free product of 25 cyclic groups of order 2. It follows that the complement to the set of birationally rigid factorial quartics with terminal singularities is of codimension at least 3 in the natural parameter space.

Abstract:We study the variety $\rm{VAPS}_G(q_2^3, 10)$ (resp. $\rm{VAPS}_G(q_3^2, 10)$), a Grassmannian compactification of the variety of finite schemes of length $10$ apolar to $q_{2}^3$ (resp. $q_3^2$), where $\{q_{n} = 0\}\subset \mathbb P^{n} $ is a smooth quadric hypersurface. In particular, we show that $\rm{VAPS_G}(q_2^3, 10)$ is the tangent developable of a rational normal curve, while $\rm{VAPS}_G(q_3^2, 10)$ is reducible with three singular $5$-dimensional components.

On the classification of product-quotient surfaces with $q=0$, $p_g=3$ and their canonical map

Abstract:In this work we present new results to produce an algorithm that returns, for any fixed pair of natural integers $K^2$ and $\chi$, all regular surfaces $S$ of general type with self-intersection $K_S^2=K^2$ and Euler characteristic $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=\chi$, that are product-quotient surfaces. The key result we obtain is an algebraic characterization of all families of regular product-quotients surfaces, up to isomorphism, arising from a pair of $G$-coverings of $\mathbb P^1$. As a consequence of our work, we provide a classification of all regular product-quotient surfaces of general type with $23\leq K^2\leq 32$ and $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=4$. Furthermore, we study their canonical map and present several new examples of surfaces of general type with a high degree of the canonical map.

Abstract:Let $E$ be the Fermat cubic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In 2002, Schoen proved that the group $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all primes $\ell\equiv 1\pmod 3$. We show that $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all prime numbers $\ell> 5$. This gives the first example of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ such that $CH^2(X)/\ell$ is infinite for all but at most finitely many primes $\ell$. A key tool is a recent theorem of Farb--Kisin--Wolfson, whose proof uses the prismatic cohomology of Bhatt--Scholze.

Abstract:We study varieties $X \subseteq \mathbb P^N$ of dimension $n$ such that $T_X(k)$ is an Ulrich vector bundle for some $k \in \mathbb Z$. First we give a sharp bound for $k$ in the case of curves. Then we show that $k \le n+1$ if $2 \le n \le 12$. We classify the pairs $(X,\mathcal O_X(1))$ for $k=1$ and we show that, for $n \ge 4$, the case $k=2$ does not occur.
