Abstract:Single-mode optical fibres exhibit a small but non-negligible birefringence that induces random polarisation rotations during light propagation. In classical interferometry these rotations give rise to polarisation-induced fading of the interferometric visibility, and in fibre-based polarimetric sensors as well as quantum optics experiments they scramble the information encoded in the polarisation state. Correcting these undesired rotations is consequently an important part of many experiments and applications employing optical fibres. In this Lab Note we review an efficient method for fully compensating fibre polarisation rotations for general input states. This method was not originally devised by us, but does to the best of our knowledge not appear in the literature, and our interactions with the community have indicated that it is not well known.

Analysis of the Distribution Characteristics of the States of Polarization Based on Improved Delaunay Triangulation Algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a new method for analyzing the states of polarization (SOP) distribution characteristics is proposed, which combines the Poincaré sphere measurement method with the improved Delaunay triangulation algorithm, and the specific components and proportions of the SOP of the beam can be quantitatively obtained. On this basis, a numerical parameter, called polarization separation degree (PSD), is introduced to characterize the spatial random dispersion level of partially polarized or unpolarized light. Experimentally, the output SOP distribution of the depolarized erbium-doped superfluorescent fiber source (SFS) is tested, the results show that the PSD of the SFS output light within 2.5 hours is 96.856%, and the proportion of right-handed (left-handed) elliptically polarized light is 49.21% and 50.53%, the proportions of righthanded (left-handed) circularly polarized light and linearly polarized light are 0.05%, 0.11%, and 0.1%, respectively, which provides a valuable numerical reference for further optimizing its structural design and reducing its polarization-dependent wavelength shift. Moreover, the evaluation method proposed in the paper provides an effective way to analyze the dynamic evolution and distribution characteristics of the SOP, and can effectively promote the development and application of polarization imaging and detection, optical fiber communication and sensing technology.

Abstract:In this paper, the synthetical analyses on the derivation of alignment in the application of the polarization optical technique are presented upon the main error sources of this technique. Consequently, a novel alignment system is developed to improve the alignment technique, which is composed of a combination of two parallel polarizers, bidirectional-double path, two detectors, and electrical signa processor. Using this system, we have realized accurate alignments between PM fibers and their in-line devices.
Fast and Automated Optical Polarization Compensation of Fiber Unitaries

Abstract:The polarization of light is critical in various applications, including quantum communication, where the photon polarization encoding a qubit can undergo uncontrolled changes when transmitted through optical fibers. Bends in the fiber, internal and external stresses, and environmental factors cause these polarization changes, which lead to errors and therein limit the range of quantum communication. To prevent this, we present a fast and automated method for polarization compensation using liquid crystals. This approach combines polarimetry based on a rotating quarter-waveplate with high-speed control of the liquid-crystal cell, offering high-fidelity compensation suitable for diverse applications. Our method directly solves for compensation parameters, avoiding reliance on stochastic approaches or cryptographic metrics. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves over 99% fidelity within an average of fewer than six iterations, with further fine-tuning to reach above 99.5% fidelity, providing a robust solution for maintaining precise polarization states in optical systems.

Abstract:To address the problem of random polarization deflection in fibers, we propose an optimization method for instantaneous frequency measurements based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. The feature difference is analyzed by comparing how a single-mode fiber and a polarization-maintaining fiber affect the realization of instantaneous frequency measurements based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. The experimental results show that random polarization deflection is well suppressed in the polarization-maintaining fiber compared with that in the single-mode fiber. Further, the frequency resolution of the measurement system with the polarization-maintaining fiber is improved from 225 MHz to 90 MHz.

Abstract:Due to the birefringence dispersion, the polarization coupling parameter measurement in high-birefringence fiber decreases obviously with the fiber length, especially for long-distance fibers. In this paper, two methods for mitigating the birefringence dispersion in a long-distance fiber are proposed. The first method is a spectral-domain measurement method. The experimental setup and results are described in detail. The other method is a time-domain numerical dispersion compensation algorithm to amend the coupling strength calculation equation. It is based on the fact that the interferogram envelope area is constant even with the existence of birefringence dispersion. The experimental result shows that the time-domain algorithm has high accuracy, and the absolute deviation is less than 1%. The two methods are validated to mitigate the birefringence dispersion in the long-distance high-birefringence fiber effectively.
Polarization Entangled Photon Pair Generation in Optical Fibers with Birefringence

Abstract:Spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in optical fibers is an important way to generate correlated/entangled photon pairs. When the pulsed pump light passes through the optical fiber, two kinds of SFWM will take place simultaneously. One is scalar scattering processes, in which two annihilated pump photons and generated photon pair are all polarized along the same fiber polarization axis. The other is vector scattering processes, in which two annihilated pump photons are polarized along different fiber polarization axes, either to the two photons of the generated pair. If the fiber has large group birefringence, the intensity of vector scattering processes will be suppressed at the phase matching frequencies of the scalar scattering processes. On the other hand, the walk-off effect of the pump pulse components polarized along the two fiber polarization axes also suppresses the vector scattering processes. Hence, by proper pump polarization and signal/idle frequency selection, photon pairs can be generated only by the two independent scalar scattering processes in optical fibers with birefringence, which provide a simple way to realize polarization entangled photon pair generation. In this paper, related experiments based on the high nonlinearity microstructure fiber (HN-MSF) with group birefringence and polarization maintained dispersion shifted fiber (PM-DSF) are introduced, showing their potential on developing practical quantum light sources.
Polarization Mode Dispersion Compensation Experiments in 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s Optical Communication Systems

Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion is becoming major system impairment in high speed and long distance optical fiber transmission systems. As the bit rate climbs from 10 to 40 Gb/s per wavelength division multiplexed channel and beyond, optical pulses are increasingly distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect. We report on polarization mode dispersion compensation experiments in 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s optical communication systems. The polarization mode dispersion compensator used in the experiments is a compact variable differential group delay element base on concatenation via six magneto-optic polarization rotators (Faraday rotators) of six YVO4 birefringence crystals whose lengths decrease in a binary power series. Feedback scheme is used to optimize the performance of polarization mode dispersion compensation, using degree of polarization as the feedback signal. In the experiments in 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s optical transmission systems, eye-diagrams and bit error rate curves of the code sequences before and after polarization mode dispersion compensation are analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that the polarization mode dispersion effect induced by the polarization mode dispersion emulator is feasibly mitigated. Separate experiment to reshape the 39 ps-pulses distorted by polarization mode dispersion is also carried out. The incident optical pulses with width of 39ps are broadened and distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect and then reshaped by the polarization mode dispersion compensator. The relationship between the feedback signal degree of polarization and differential group delay is also analyzed.
Exploring the role of polarization in fiber-based quantum sources

Abstract:Optical fibers constitute an attractive platform for the realization of nonlinear and quantum optics processes. Here we show, through theoretical considerations, how polarization effects of both third-order parametric down-conversion and four-wave-mixing in optical fibers may be exploited to enhance detection schemes. We apply our general framework specifically to the case of tapered fibers for photon triplet generation, a long-standing goal within quantum optics, and obtain explicit expectation values for its efficiency. A quantitative investigation of four-wave-mixing in a microstructured solid-core fiber provides significant consequences for the role of polarization in experimental design.

Abstract:We propose a feed-forward polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator with three segments that is capable of compensating for the first- and second-order PMD in a transmission fiber. All control parameters are analytically obtained by the PMD concatenated rules. The influence of all possible perturbations on the compensation is investigated with Monte Carlo simulations. The main advantage of our PMD compensation module over the models reported so far is that it shows excellent robustness to all possible perturbations.

Abstract:We present a scheme for active compensation of complex extrinsic polarization perturbations introduced into an optical system. Imaging polarimeter is used to measure the polarization state across a beam profile and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator controls the polarization of the input beam. A sequence of measurements permits determination of the birefringence properties of a perturbing specimen. The necessary correction is calculated and fed back to the polarization modulator to compensate for the polarization perturbation. The system capabilities are demonstrated on a range of birefringent specimens.

Abstract:Routine characterization of polarization mode dispersion of single-mode fibers in installed cables requires simple and fast techniques. All standardized techniques use both fiber ends, one connected to the optical source and the other one for signal detection. Clearly, this causes several drawbacks in field tests because the two fiber ends are usually far from each other. Among standardized techniques, the fixed-polarizer method (also called wavelength scanning method) is one of the simplest to implement. In this work we present a new single-end measurement scheme based on the fixed polarizer method applied to the signal backreflected by the fiber far-end. We report analytical equations and numerical solutions that permit to calculate the mean value of the differential group delay measuring the crossings and/or extreme densities of the spectrum transmitted through a linear polarizer. We also show that the mean value of the differential group delay can be calculated using the Fourier transform of the detected signal. Finally, experimental results on cascades of single-mode step-index fibers confirm the robustness and easiness of our proposal for polarization mode dispersion measurements.

Abstract:Flexible management of light polarization is necessary to develop the technologies of optical fiber communications. However, it is still a great challenge to manipulate optical polarization in all-fiberbased devices. Here we present a novel structural design of three-core fiber couplers to create arbitrary polarization management by embedding a vector mode segregated core within the conventional fiber couplers. We take advantages of these coupling structures to achieve polarization split, rotation, and exchange, as three essential polarization managements for fiber-guided modes. We study these couplers based on coupled-mode theory and numerically simulations. The obtained results show that they manifest favorable operation performance on management of the fiber modal polarization states. Compared to previous couplers used for management of power, wavelengths and modal forms, this kind of fiber couplers introduces a new manageable degree of freedom for modal polarization. It is expected that the presented all-fiber polarization-manageable directional couplers might find potential applications in fiber optical communications and sensing systems.

Abstract:We report on a protocol to achieve full control of the polarization in a nanofiber. The protocol relies on studying the light scattered out from a nanofiber by means of two optical systems with $45^\circ$ camera angle difference. By studying the disturbance of the nanofiber on the radiation of embedded scatterers, we propose an explanation for the observed reduced scattering contrast of the nanofiber. Thanks to this approach, we demonstrate an accuracy of the polarization control larger than 95\%.
