Abstract:Polarization sensitivity has been a major issue in Brillouin scattering-based optical fiber sensing systems. Randomization of the polarization state of the pump is one of the ways to circumvent the problem. However, there could exist a residual degree of polarization (DOP) for the pump after polarization randomization, and hence, a model to characterize the polarization evolution in Brillouin scattering with a partially polarized pump is essential for the performance evaluation. In this work, a comprehensive theoretical model to characterize the beam variation with the partially polarized pump wave and Stokes wave is proposed, which is based on a set of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The polarized part of the pump wave and the Stokes wave, as well as the total powers of the waves, are incorporated in the coupled SDE simultaneously, which enables the comprehensive simulation of the polarization evolution in the fiber. It is revealed in the study that the DOPs of the pump wave and the Stokes wave affect the gain stability and should be reduced simultaneously by polarization scrambling to ensure a fixed Brillouin gain without fluctuations.

Abstract:The transmission of a pump laser resonant with the lower polariton branch of a semiconductor microcavity is shown to be highly dependent on the degree of circular polarization of the pump. Spin dependent anisotropy of polariton-polariton interactions allows the internal polarization to be controlled by varying the pump power. The formation of spatial patterns, spin rings with high degree of circular polarization, arising as a result of polarization bistability, is observed. A phenomenological model based on spin dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations provides a good description of the experimental results. Inclusion of interactions with the incoherent exciton reservoir, which provides spin-independent blueshifts of the polariton modes, is found to be essential.

Abstract:It is shown that a simple photonic crystal slab structure provides a powerful mechanism for the control of the polarization properties of light. For a lossless system, for a given incident light with any fixed polarization, one can generate arbitrary polarization in the reflected light, as one varies the direction of the incident light. In the lossy system, the capability for arbitrary polarization generation is still preserved for s‐ or p‐polarized incident light. This capability for arbitrary polarization generation closely relates to the nontrivial topological properties of the reflection matrix of the structure and exists over a wide range of frequencies.
Polarization-Induced Fading Elimination Technique in Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis Sensor

Abstract:Because stimulated Brillouin scattering is polarization related, in Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system, the steady measurement of sensing signals is seriously affected by the random change of polarization state of pump light and probe light, which causes the measured signal fluctuant. Through constructing coupling equations about the polarization states of pump light and probe light, we deduce the function about probe light intensity referred to the polarization state of pump light and probe light. And a novel method, called polarization expanding receiving method, is proposed to eliminate the polarization related signal fading. Numerically simulated results of coupling equations prove that the polarization expanding receiving technique is feasible for Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA), and the theoretical analysis is correct. Finally, a primary experimental result with the proposed method is present, which is coincident with the theoretical and simulating results.

Abstract:Generalizing broadband angular selectivity to both polarizations has been a scientific challenge for a long time. Previous demonstrations of the broadband angular selectivity work only for one polarization. In this paper, we propose a method that can achieve polarization-independent optical broadband angular selectivity. Our design is based on a material system consisting of alternating one dimensionally anisotropic photonic crystal (1D PhC) stacks and half wave plates. 1D PhC stacks have an angular photonic band gap for p polarized light and half-wave plates can convert s-polarized light to p-polarized light. By introducing alternating 1D PhC stacks and half-wave plates, we predict that one can achieve a central transmission angle at normal incidence and an angularly selective range of less than 30 across the whole visible spectrum.

Abstract:Optical fibers constitute an attractive platform for the realization of nonlinear and quantum optics processes. Here we show, through theoretical considerations, how polarization effects of both third-order parametric down-conversion and four-wave-mixing in optical fibers may be exploited to enhance detection schemes. We apply our general framework specifically to the case of tapered fibers for photon triplet generation, a long-standing goal within quantum optics, and obtain explicit expectation values for its efficiency. A quantitative investigation of four-wave-mixing in a microstructured solid-core fiber provides significant consequences for the role of polarization in experimental design.

Abstract:Optical systems provide a new and practical platform for studying Bloch oscillations. This study investigates the fundamental-mode propagation of polarization-dependent Bloch oscillations. By using the three-dimensional properties of femtosecond laser direct writing, we fabricate a polymer-based gradient waveguide array and determine the Bloch oscillations under different polarization inputs by using the birefringence gradient and the equivalent refractive index, thus exhibiting a polarization-dependent Bloch period. Our results provide a new, to the best of our knowledge, paradigm for two-dimensional optical Bloch modes and highlight the influence of optical polarization in the same system, which provides a possibility to observe richer physics related to Bloch oscillations in one structure.
Polarization evolution on the higher-order Poincaré sphere via photonic Dirac points

Abstract:In this work, we report a general reflection model to describe the reflected behaviors of a Gaussian beam near photonic Dirac point at the optical interface. With spin polarized electromagnetic waves strikes near the single Dirac point on Dirac material interface, vortical phase distribution and spin inversion are demonstrated for reflected state, and we further develop a higher-order Poincaré sphere to describe the evolution of polarization states. It is possible to generate any desired Poincaré vortex beam on the sphere by modulating the incident polarization state of light. Moreover, we discuss the case of normal incidence around two adjacent Dirac points, reflection spectrum involves a couple of spin flip vortices corresponding to two points with the corresponding topological invariants, which are consistent with the Berry curvature and topological charge. These results can be extended to similar hyperbolic metamaterials with degenerate point, and inspire a different perspective for manipulating polarized vortex beam with photonic Dirac point. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.104.013504 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Polarization insensitivity is a fundamental requirement for wavelength conversion technique in the future all-optical networks. Our experimental results show that a co-polarization pump configuration based on four-wave mixing in high-nonlinear fiber can reduce largely the polarization sensitivity. We have theoretically investigated those experimental phenomena, and the theoretical analyses are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors are polarization sensitive and generally affected by polarization fading. This paper contributes to the optimal choice of polarization fading suppression methods for different optical fiber sensors, by means of comparative analysis of the mechanism of polarization fading, the strategy of polarization state control, and the applicability of suppression methods. The comparison results show that the polarization diversity receiving method is suitable for remote multi-channels optical fiber sensing system. The polarization orthogonal pulse pair method is only suitable for optical fiber sensing systems based on the backward scattering light. Meanwhile, the Faraday rotating mirror method is only suitable for optical fiber sensing systems based on the forward light interference. The polarization pulse coding method is suitable for sensing systems with high sensitivity and stability requirements. The polarization control method may increase the control complexity of sensing system for simultaneous variation of multiple polarization states. The full and partial polarization-maintaining fiber methods can be used to keep the polarization state of sensing light along the optical fiber, but the additional system cost limits the application. The polarization scrambler method is currently only available for sensing systems based on Brillouin scattering light. This paper provides a reference for the feasible selection of polarization fading suppression schemes for different optical fiber sensing systems.

Abstract:Polarization properties of single photons emitted by optical pumping from a single quantum dot (QD) are studied by using a four-level system model. The model is capable of explaining the polarization uncertainty observed in single photon emission experiments. It is found that the dependence of photon emission efficiency and polarization visibility on pump power are opposite in general cases. By employing QDs with small size and strong carrier confinement, the photon polarization visibility under high pump power can be improved. In addition, embedding a QD into a well designed microcavity is also found to be favourable, whereas the trade-off between high polarization visibility and multi-photon emission is noted.

Abstract:We show that the polarization state of coherent light propagating through an optically thick multiple-scattering medium, can be controlled by wavefront shaping, i.e. by controlling only the spatial phase of the incoming field with a spatial light modulator. Any polarization state of light at any spatial position behind the scattering medium can be attained with this technique. Thus, transforming the random medium to an arbitrary optical polarization component becomes possible.

Abstract:We report polarization independent wavelength conversion based on one-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers. A spectrum-sliced amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light source is used to provide a non-polarized pump. The signal is coherent lights coming from a tunable laser. When adjusting the polarization of the signal using a polarization controller, the variation of wavelength conversion efficiency is less than 0.2 dB. We use the vector theory of four-wave mixing to analyze the polarization independent nature of wavelength conversion by using randomly polarized pumps.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the suitability of the selection of pump frequency ($\omega_p$) with respect to the signal frequency ($\omega_s$) for the best polarization insensitive phase conjugate generation through Bragg-scattering based four-wave mixing in nonlinear SOAs. We study the positive detuning ($\omega_s>\omega_p$) and negative detuning ($\omega_s<\omega_p)$ scenario for the inherent polarization transformation of conjugate generation at both the ports of SOA. Conjugate generation is desired to be through a unitary transformation for its utility in further digital signal processing, and we prove that only positive detuning conditions result in unitary transformation.

Abstract:The polarization dependent gain (PDG) of Brillouin amplification systems is numerically investigated in detail by solving a new model describing the evolution of PDG vector along the fiber with random birefringence. In this model both the modulus and orientation of the PDG vector are considered. By including the temporal distribution of fiber birefringence, the statistical properties of the PDG vector, including its mean value and standard deviation, are presented as function of fiber beat length, input pump power and fiber length, which can be directly applied in practice to estimate the performance of Brillouin amplification systems in term of its polarization dependence. Experimental results on a Brillouin amplification system are also reported to support the validity of our model. The analysis presented here helps to gain insight for the properties of PDG vector in any SBS systems.
Dual-polarization huge photonic spin Hall shift and deep-subwavelength sensing based on topological singularities in one-dimensional photonic crystals

Abstract:Although several efforts have been taken to enhance the photonic spin Hall shift in deep-subwavelength region, according to effective medium theory, the fundamental confliction between near-zero reflection coefficient and near-zero incident angle still hinders the further application. Here, we reveal a fundamental breakdown of effective medium theory due to the existing of topological singularity in deep-subwavelength region in one-dimensional photonic crystals. We find that near the topological singularity, huge photonic spin Hall shift can be achieved for s-polarization and p-polarization. At the topological singularity, the reflected filed is split as dipole-like distribution with zero photonic spin Hall shift for both-polarizations, which is resulted from the interfere of the spin-maintained normal light and spin-flipped abnormal light. Based on the theoretical research, dual-polarizations thickness and dielectric constant sensing devices can be designed in deep-subwavelength region. Further more, by applying more complicated layered structure, multi-channels dual-polarizations detection and broadband dual-polarizations huge spin Hall shift platform can be designed. This work paves the way to exploring the topological properties and polarization control of photonic crystals and provides a prospective method for the design of multi-channels sensitive detection spin optical devices.

Abstract:We point out that the polarization state of radiation from a photonic crystal slab is strongly constrained by the direct non-resonant scattering process. The phase difference between the two linearly-polarized components in the far field can be predicted analytically and is largely independent of the periodic pattern. We verify the prediction with full-field electromagnetic simulations.
