Abstract:Despite its amazing quantitative successes and contributions to revolutionary technologies, physics currently faces many unsolved mysteries ranging from the meaning of quantum mechanics to the nature of the dark energy that will determine the future of the Universe. It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from The Future of Physics by William D Phillips and What characterises topological effects in physics? by Gerard t Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. This paper is presented as a preface to exciting developments by senior and young scientists in the years that lie ahead, and a complement to the less authoritative popular accounts by journalists.

They talk about the notches on the Ishango bone and the various uses of psi in maths and physics; they arrive at dessins d’enfants, moonshine concepts, Rademacher sums and their significance in the quantum world. You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Abstract:"Phase-locking" is a fundamental phenomenon in which coupled or periodically forced oscillators synchronise. The Arnold family of circle maps, which describes a forced oscillator, is the simplest mathematical model of phase-locking and has been studied intensively since its introduction in the 1960s. The family exhibits regions of parameter space where phase-locking phenomena can be observed. A long-standing question asked whether "hyperbolic" parameters~-- those whose behaviour is dominated by periodic attractors, and which are therefore stable under perturbation~-- are dense within the family. A positive answer was given in 2015 by van Strien and the author, which implies that, no matter how chaotic a map within the family may behave, there are always systems with stable behaviour nearby. This research was a focal point of a pioneering collaboration with composer Emily Howard, commencing with Howard's residency in Liverpool's mathematics department in 2015. The collaboration generated impacts on creativity, culture and society, including several musical works by Howard, and lasting influence on artistic practice through a first-of-its-kind centre for science and music. We describe the research and the collaboration, and reflect on the factors that contributed to the latter's success.

Abstract:Black hole horizons in equilibrium and null infinity of asymptotically flat space-times are null 3-manifolds but have very different physical connotations. We first show that they share a large number of geometric properties, making them both weakly isolated horizons. We then use this new unified perspective to unravel the origin of the drastic differences in the physics they contain. Abstract:The nature of the existence, revealed through Human cognitive system, has been evolving since the development of the languages. Part of such revelations were the geometrical forms and the numbers, whose beauty and order, wondrous and mysterious, conveyed a sense of unreality beyond the physical reality normally discerned; to Plato they were indications of the other reality of which only those few glimpses had occurred. And full access for the earthlings required breaking out of their shackles of captivity; beautifully portrayed in the Masters cave allegory. The Present era sense of wonder of the effectiveness of the mathematics in the formulations of the discoveries of the fundamental and natural laws of existence, and the advances in computation, and especially in artificial intelligence (AI), have revived the platonic idea with some adherents among the very minds who contribute to furthering of our understanding of our physical universe. The work presented here is an attempt in proving that a physical world precludes the prospects for the mathematics to be its other reality. This end is achieved by bringing to light the processes involved in the discernment of the world by humans. The fundamentals involved make it clear that the events of the physical universe, are played out in our physical brains operational language of physics; and the symbolic language of mathematics is another machine language of our computational brains for the specific expressions of the underlying physics of some of the phenomena it processes. This rapidly developing language, presently much in appearances strange to the physical reality, and taken by many great minds; Plato, Galileo, Kant, Winger and the likes, as indication of an incontrovertible and mysteriousness mathematical world, is in fact inadvertently, blazing the trail for discoveries of more novelties of the physics of the physical universe.

Abstract:Scientists collaborating internationally have developed a new way to learn about our universe through gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time caused by the motion and vibration of celestial bodies. By analogy, gravitational waves are akin to the vibrations carried through the air as sound. Quite remarkably, black holes, which are the densest objects in the universe formed from dead stars can vibrate and emit gravitational waves at frequencies that are within the range of human hearing once the gravitational waves are detected and amplified by instruments such as the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors. In this work, we explore how to make musical instruments based on gravitational waves by mapping a different gravitational wave pattern to each of the 88 keys of a piano, much like a carillon, which has its bells mapped to the batons of a carillon-keyboard. We rely on theoretical calculations for black hole vibrations to construct our digital black hole instruments. Our software and music samples are freely available to those who want to explore the music of gravitational waves.

Abstract:After presenting the general framework of 'mathemusical' dynamics, we focus on one music-theoretical problem concerning a special case of homometry theory applied to music composition, namely Milton Babbitt's hexachordal theorem. We briefly discuss some historical aspects of homometric structures and their ramifications in crystallography, spectral analysis and music composition via the construction of rhythmic canons tiling the integer line. We then present the probabilistic generalization of Babbitt's result we recently introduced in a paper entitled ''New hexachordal theorems in metric spaces with probability measure'' and illustrate the new approach with original constructions and examples.

Abstract:For physicists, recent developments in astrophysics and cosmology present exciting challenges. We are conducting "experiments" in energy regimes some of which will be probed by accelerators in the near future, and others which are inevitably the subject of more speculative theoretical investigations. Dark matter is an area where we have hope of making discoveries both with accelerator experiments and dedicated searches. Inflation and dark energy lie in regimes where presently our only hope for a fundamental understanding lies in string theory.

Abstract:We comment on the fact that certain mathematical models that have been proposed in the quantum gravity literature, may not be subject to experimental checks, even if they turn out to be mathematically well defined. This means that they would be indistinguishable from other models, with a smaller number of quantum states. These considerations follow from very general properties of quantum measurement theory and classical gravity.

Abstract:To many people, music is a mystery. It is uniquely human, because no other species produces elaborate, well organized sound for no particular reason. It has been part of every known civilization on earth. It has become a very part of man's need to impose his will upon the universe, to bring order out of chaos and to endow his moments of highest awareness with enduring form and substance. It is a form of art dealing with the organization of tones into patterns. Despite of cultural differences, music from different civilizations seems to consist of some building blocks that are universal: melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. Almost all musical systems are based on scales spanning an octave---the note that sounds the same as the one you started off with, but at a higher or lower pitch. It was discovered by Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher who lived around 500 BC, that the note an octave higher than another has a frequency twice high. The notes that sound harmonious together have simple rational number ratios between their frequencies. It is those implicit structures and relationships in apparently mysterious musical experience that I am interested in exploring here. As a scientist by training with a consistent passion for classical guitar playing, I would like make an attempt to explain the musical experience in terms of science and mathematics, hoping to fill some gaps between the knowledge of scientists and artistic intuition of musicians.

Abstract:Along with weaving together observations, experiments, and theoretical constructs into a coherent mesh of understanding of the world around us, physics over its past five centuries has continuously refined the base concepts on which the whole framework is built. In quantum physics, first in non-relativistic mechanics and later in quantum field theories, even familiar concepts of position, momentum, wave or particle, are derived constructs from the classical limit in which we live but not intrinsic to the underlying physics. Most crucially, the very idea of the individual, whether an object or an event, distinguished only in a mere label of identity from others identical to it in all the physics, exists only as an approximation, not an element of underlying reality. Failure to recognize this and seeking alternative explanations in many worlds or multiverses leads only to incoherent logic and incorrect physics. As an example, in a physical system such as an atom in a particular state, physics deals with the universal system of all such atoms but makes no meaningful prediction of the position of an electron or the time of decay of any specific atom. Those are incidental, entirely random among all possible positions and times, even while physics makes very precise predictions for the distribution of the outcomes in measurements on atoms in that state. Physics deals with the universal, not the individual.
