Abstract:Application of the Ramsey Infinite Theorem to the variational principles of physics is discussed. According to the Ramsey Infinite Theorem,there exists the infinite, monochromatic chain of the pathways (clique), which are completely built from actual or virtual paths, connecting the intermediate states of the system.

Abstract:The expression of the ground-state energy of a bipolaron in a parabolic quantum wire or well is derived within the framework of Feynman variational path-integral theory. We obtain a general result with arbitrary electron-phonon coupling constant, confining potential strength, and ratio of dielectric constants, which could be used for further numerical calculation of bipolaron properties. Moreover, it is shown that all previous path-integral formula for a bipolaron in a parabolic quantum wire, quantum well or quantum dot can be recovered in the present formalism.

Abstract:Ramsey theory enables re-shaping of the basic ideas of quantum mechanics. Quantum observables represented by linear Hermitian operators are seen as the vertices of a graph. Relations of commutation define the coloring of edges linking the vertices: if the operators commute, they are connected with a red link; if they do not commute, they are connected with a green link. Thus, a bi-colored complete Ramsey graph emerges. According to Ramsey's theorem, a complete bi-colored graph built of six vertices will inevitably contain at least one monochromatic triangle; in other words, the Ramsey number $ R(3,3) = 6 $. In our interpretation, this triangle represents the triad of observables that could or could not be established simultaneously in a given quantum system. The Ramsey approach to quantum mechanics is illustrated.

Abstract:We show that the Ramsey theory of block sequences in infinite-dimensional discrete vector spaces can be parametrized by perfect sets. As special cases, we prove combinatorial dichotomies for definable families of partitions and linear transformations on those spaces. We also consider the extent to which analogues of selective ultrafilters in this setting are preserved by Sacks forcing.

Abstract:For fixed finite graphs $G$, $H$, a common problem in Ramsey theory is to study graphs $F$ such that $F \to (G,H)$, i.e. every red-blue coloring of the edges of $F$ produces either a red $G$ or a blue $H$. We generalize this study to infinite graphs $G$, $H$; in particular, we want to determine if there is a minimal such $F$. This problem has strong connections to the study of self-embeddable graphs: infinite graphs which properly contain a copy of themselves. We prove some compactness results relating this problem to the finite case, then give some general conditions for a pair $(G,H)$ to have a Ramsey-minimal graph. We use these to prove, for example, that if $G=S_\infty$ is an infinite star and $H=nK_2$, $n \geqslant 1$ is a matching, then the pair $(S_\infty,nK_2)$ admits no Ramsey-minimal graphs.

Abstract:Infinite statistics in which all representations of the symmetric group can occur is known as a special case of quon theory. However, the validity of relativistic quon theories is still in doubt. In this paper we prove that there exists a relativistic quantum field theory which allows interactions involving infinite statistics particles. We also give some consistency analysis of this theory such as conservation of statistics and Feynman rules.

The applications in graph theory are shown to be equivalent to Ramsey’s Theorem while the application in lattice theory is shown to be provable in the weaker system RCA 0 .

Abstract:In Euclidean Ramsey Theory usually we are looking for monochromatic configurations in the Euclidean space, whose points are colored with a fixed number of colors. In the canonical version, the number of colors is arbitrary, and we are looking for an `unavoidable' set of colorings of a finite configuration, that is a set of colorings with the property that one of them always appears in any coloring of the space. This set definitely includes the monochromatic and the rainbow colorings. In the present paper, we prove the following two results of this type. First, for any acute triangle $T$, and any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^3$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow copy of $T$. Second, for every $m$, there exists a sufficiently large $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists either a monochromatic or a rainbow $m$-dimensional unit hypercube. In the maximum norm, $\ell_{\infty}$, we have a much stronger statement. For every finite $M$, there exits an $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}_\infty^n$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow isometric copy of $M$.

On the Infinite Variance Problem in Fermion Models

Abstract:Monte Carlo calculations of fermionic systems with continuous auxiliary fields frequently suffer from a diverging variance. If a system has the infinite variance problem, one cannot estimate observables reliably even with an infinite number of samples. In this paper, we explore a method to deal with this problem based on sampling according to the distribution of a system with an extra time-slice. The necessary reweighting factor is computed both perturbatively and through a secondary Monte Carlo. We show that the Monte Carlo reweigthing coupled to the use of a non-biased estimator of the reweigthing factor leads to a method that eliminates the infinite variance problem at a very small extra cost. We compute the double occupancy in the Hubbard model at half-filling to demonstrate the method and compare the results to well established results obtained by other methods.

Abstract:Ramsey's theorem, concerning the guarantee of certain monochromatic patterns in large enough edge-coloured complete graphs, is a fundamental result in combinatorial mathematics. In this work, we highlight the connection between this abstract setting and a statistical physics problem. Specifically, we design a classical Hamiltonian that favours configurations in a way to establish lower bounds on Ramsey numbers. As a proof of principle we then use Monte Carlo methods to obtain such lower bounds, finding rough agreement with known literature values in a few cases we investigated. We discuss numerical limitations of our approach and indicate a path towards the treatment of larger graph sizes.

Abstract:One of the consequences of the Compactness Principle in structural Ramsey theory is that the small Ramsey degrees cannot exceed the corresponding big Ramsey degrees, thereby justifying the choice of adjectives. However, it is unclear what happens in the realm of dual Ramsey degrees due to the lack of the compactness argument that applies to that setting. In this paper we present a framework within which both "direct" and dual Ramsey statements can be stated and reasoned about in a uniform fashion. We introduce the notion of approximability which yields a general compactness argument powerful enough to prove statements about both "direct" and dual Ramsey phenomena. We conclude the paper with an application of the new strategies by generalizing Voigt's $\star$-version of the Infinite Ramsey Theorem to a large class of relational structures and deriving a Ramsey statement for "loose colorings" of enumerated Fra\"ıssé limits.

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of m linear forms in n variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof of our variational principle relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. We use our variational principle to compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs have equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory for binary free amalgamation classes

Abstract:We develop infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory for Fraïssé limits of finitely constrained free amalgamation classes in finite binary languages. We show that our approach is optimal and in particular, recovers the exact big Ramsey degrees proved in [2] for these structures. A crucial step in the work develops the new notion of an A.3(2)-ideal and shows that Todorcevic's Abstract Ramsey Theorem holds when Axiom A.3(2) is replaced by the weaker assumption of an A.3(2)-ideal.

Ramsey problems for monotone paths in graphs and hypergraphs

Abstract:The study of ordered Ramsey numbers of monotone paths for graphs and hypergraphs has a long history, going back to the celebrated work by Erdős and Szekeres in the early days of Ramsey theory. In this paper we obtain several results in this area, establishing two conjectures of Mubayi and Suk and improving bounds due to Balko, Cibulka, Král and Kynčl. We also obtain a color-monotone version of the well-known Canonical Ramsey Theorem of Erdős and Rado, which could be of independent interest.

Big Ramsey Degrees and Infinite Languages

Abstract:This paper investigates big Ramsey degrees of unrestricted relational structures in (possibly) infinite languages. Despite significant progress in the study of big Ramsey degrees, the big Ramsey degrees of many classes of structures with finite small Ramsey degrees are still not well understood. We show that if there are only finitely many relations of every arity greater than one, then unrestricted relational structures have finite big Ramsey degrees, and give some evidence that this is tight. This is the first time finiteness of big Ramsey degrees has been established for a random structure in an infinite language. Our results represent an important step towards a better understanding of big Ramsey degrees for structures with relations of arity greater than two.

Then we apply it to spin particle systems to obtain a full form of a variational principle characterizing the stationary Markov laws of the systems. A related extreme decomposition for any stationary distribution of such Markov systems is also given.

Abstract:We work within the framework of the Alpha-Theory introduced by Benci and Di Nasso. The Alpha-Theory postulates a few natural properties for an infinite "ideal" number $\alpha$. The formulation provides an elementary axiomatics for the methods of abstract ultra-Ramsey theory. The main results are Theorem 10, Theorem 57, Theorem 67 and Theorem 73. Theorem 10 is an infinite-dimensional extension of the celebrated Ramsey's Theorem. We show that corollaries of this result include the Galvin-Pirky Theorem, the Silver Theorem and the $\vec{\alpha}$-Ellentuck Theorem. We prove that, under the assumption of the $\mathfrak{c}^{+}$-enlarging property, the $\vec{\alpha}$-Ellentuck Theorem is equivalent to the Ultra-Ellentuck Theorem of Todorcevic. Theorem 57 is an abstraction of Theorem 10 to the setting of triples $(\mathcal{R},\le,r)$ where $\mathcal{R}\not=\emptyset$, $\le$ is a quasi-order on $\mathcal{R}$ and $r$ is a function with domain $\mathbb{N}\times \mathcal{R}$. We use Theorem 57 to develop the Abstract $\vec{\alpha}$-Ellentuck Theorem, Theorem 67, and the Abstract Ultra-Ellentuck Theorem, Theorem 73, extending the Abstract Ellentuck Theorem along the same lines as the $\vec{\alpha}$-Ellentuck Theorem and Ultra-Ellentuck Theorem extend the Ellentuck Theorem, respectively. We conclude with some examples illustrating the theory and an open question related to the local Ramsey theory developed by Di Prisco, Mijares and Nieto.

Abstract:In this paper, we survey our recent results on the variational formulation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for the finite-dimensional case of discrete systems, as well as for the infinite-dimensional case of continuum systems. Starting with the fundamental variational principle of classical mechanics, namely, Hamilton's principle, we show, with the help of thermodynamic systems with gradually increasing complexity, how to systematically extend it to include irreversible processes. In the finite dimensional cases, we treat systems experiencing the irreversible processes of mechanical friction, heat, and mass transfer in both the adiabatically closed cases and open cases. On the continuum side, we illustrate our theory using the example of multicomponent Navier-Stokes-Fourier systems.
