Abstract:We show that the Ramsey theory of block sequences in infinite-dimensional discrete vector spaces can be parametrized by perfect sets. As special cases, we prove combinatorial dichotomies for definable families of partitions and linear transformations on those spaces. We also consider the extent to which analogues of selective ultrafilters in this setting are preserved by Sacks forcing.

Abstract:Let $\tilde K_t$ denote the $3$-uniform linear clique of order $t$. Given an even integer $t \geq 4$, let $M$ denote the asymmetric maximal density of $\tilde K_t$ and $\tilde K_{t/2}$. We prove that there exists a constant $C>0$ such that, if $(H_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is any sequence of dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs and $p := p(n) \geq Cn^{-1/M}$, then $$ \lim_{n \to \infty} \Pr[H_n \cup R_n \to (\tilde K_t)_2] =1 $$ holds, whenever $R_n \sim \mathbb{H}(n,p)$, where the latter denotes the binomial $3$-uniform random hypergraph distribution. We conjecture that this result uncovers the threshold for the property in question for $t \geq 6$. The key tools of our proof are a new variant of the Strong Hypergraph Regularity Lemma along with a new Tuple Lemma accompanying it. Our variant incorporates both the strong and the weak hypergraph regularity lemmas into a single lemma; allowing for graph-like applications of the strong lemma to be carried out in $3$-uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of countable Borel equivalence relations (CBERs) on topological Ramsey spaces. First, we give a simple proof of the fact that every CBER on $[\mathbb{N}]^{\mathbb{N}}$ is hyperfinite on some set of the form $[A]^{\mathbb{N}}$. Using the idea behind the proof, we show the analogous result for every topological Ramsey space.

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory for binary free amalgamation classes

Abstract:We develop infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory for Fraïssé limits of finitely constrained free amalgamation classes in finite binary languages. We show that our approach is optimal and in particular, recovers the exact big Ramsey degrees proved in [2] for these structures. A crucial step in the work develops the new notion of an A.3(2)-ideal and shows that Todorcevic's Abstract Ramsey Theorem holds when Axiom A.3(2) is replaced by the weaker assumption of an A.3(2)-ideal.

Abstract:For fixed finite graphs $G$, $H$, a common problem in Ramsey theory is to study graphs $F$ such that $F \to (G,H)$, i.e. every red-blue coloring of the edges of $F$ produces either a red $G$ or a blue $H$. We generalize this study to infinite graphs $G$, $H$; in particular, we want to determine if there is a minimal such $F$. This problem has strong connections to the study of self-embeddable graphs: infinite graphs which properly contain a copy of themselves. We prove some compactness results relating this problem to the finite case, then give some general conditions for a pair $(G,H)$ to have a Ramsey-minimal graph. We use these to prove, for example, that if $G=S_\infty$ is an infinite star and $H=nK_2$, $n \geqslant 1$ is a matching, then the pair $(S_\infty,nK_2)$ admits no Ramsey-minimal graphs.
Big Ramsey Degrees and Infinite Languages

Abstract:This paper investigates big Ramsey degrees of unrestricted relational structures in (possibly) infinite languages. Despite significant progress in the study of big Ramsey degrees, the big Ramsey degrees of many classes of structures with finite small Ramsey degrees are still not well understood. We show that if there are only finitely many relations of every arity greater than one, then unrestricted relational structures have finite big Ramsey degrees, and give some evidence that this is tight. This is the first time finiteness of big Ramsey degrees has been established for a random structure in an infinite language. Our results represent an important step towards a better understanding of big Ramsey degrees for structures with relations of arity greater than two.

Borel sets of Rado graphs and Ramsey's Theorem

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Abstract:We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<\omega}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.

The applications in graph theory are shown to be equivalent to Ramsey’s Theorem while the application in lattice theory is shown to be provable in the weaker system RCA 0 .

On Ramsey degrees, compactness and approximability

Abstract:One of the consequences of the Compactness Principle in structural Ramsey theory is that the small Ramsey degrees cannot exceed the corresponding big Ramsey degrees, thereby justifying the choice of adjectives. However, it is unclear what happens in the realm of dual Ramsey degrees due to the lack of the compactness argument that applies to that setting. In this paper we present a framework within which both "direct" and dual Ramsey statements can be stated and reasoned about in a uniform fashion. We introduce the notion of approximability which yields a general compactness argument powerful enough to prove statements about both "direct" and dual Ramsey phenomena. We conclude the paper with an application of the new strategies by generalizing Voigt's $\star$-version of the Infinite Ramsey Theorem to a large class of relational structures and deriving a Ramsey statement for "loose colorings" of enumerated Fra\"ıssé limits.

A limiting result for the Ramsey theory of functional equations

Abstract:We study systems of functional equations whose solutions can be parameterized in function of one variable; our main result proves that the partition regularity (PR) of such systems can be completely characterized by the existence of constant solutions. As applications of this result, we prove the following: (1) A complete characterization of the PR of systems of Diophantine equations in two variables over $\mathbb{N}$. In particular, we prove that the only infinitely PR irreducible equation in two variables is $x=y$; (2) PR of $S$-unit equations and the failure of Rado's Theorem for finitely generated multiplicative subgroups of $\mathbb{C}$; and (3) a complete characterization of the PR of two classes of polynomial exponential equations.

Ramsey multiplicity and the Turán coloring

Abstract:Extending an earlier conjecture of Erdős, Burr and Rosta conjectured that among all two-colorings of the edges of a complete graph, the uniformly random coloring asymptotically minimizes the number of monochromatic copies of any fixed graph $H$. This conjecture was disproved independently by Sidorenko and Thomason. The first author later found quantitatively stronger counterexamples, using the Turán coloring, in which one of the two colors spans a balanced complete multipartite graph. We prove that the Turán coloring is extremal for an infinite family of graphs, and that it is the unique extremal coloring. This yields the first determination of the Ramsey multiplicity constant of a graph for which the Burr--Rosta conjecture fails. We also prove an analogous three-color result. In this case, our result is conditional on a certain natural conjecture on the behavior of two-color Ramsey numbers.

New Ramsey Multiplicity Bounds and Search Heuristics

Abstract:We study two related problems concerning the number of homogeneous subsets of given size in graphs that go back to questions of Erdős. Most notably, we improve the upper bounds on the Ramsey multiplicity of $K_4$ and $K_5$ and settle the minimum number of independent sets of size $4$ in graphs with clique number at most $4$. Motivated by the elusiveness of the symmetric Ramsey multiplicity problem, we also introduce an off-diagonal variant and obtain tight results when counting monochromatic $K_4$ or $K_5$ in only one of the colors and triangles in the other. The extremal constructions for each problem turn out to be blow-ups of a graph of constant size and were found through search heuristics. They are complemented by lower bounds established using flag algebras, resulting in a fully computer-assisted approach. For some of our theorems we can also derive that the extremal construction is stable in a very strong sense. More broadly, these problems lead us to the study of the region of possible pairs of clique and independent set densities that can be realized as the limit of some sequence of graphs.

Abstract:Topological Ramsey theory studies a class of combinatorial topological spaces, called topological Ramsey spaces, unifying the essential features of those combinatorial frames where the Ramsey property is equivalent to Baire property. In this article, we expose a general overview of the combinatorial structure of topological Ramsey spaces and their main properties, and we propose an alternative proof of abstract Ellentuck theorem for a large family of topological Ramsey spaces. Additionally, we present the notion of selective topological Ramsey space, and generalize Kastanas games in order to characterize the Baire property for the family of selective topological Ramsey spaces.

Abstract:Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ and an integer $r$, we say that a graph is $r$-Ramsey for $\mathcal{F}$ if any $r$-colouring of its edges admits a monochromatic copy of a graph from $\mathcal{F}$. The threshold for the classic Ramsey property in the binomial random graph, where $\mathcal{F}$ consists of one graph, was located in the celebrated work of Rödl and Ruciński. In this paper, we offer a twofold generalisation to the Rödl--Ruciński theorem. First, we show that the list-colouring version of the property has the same threshold. Second, we extend this result to finite families $\mathcal{F}$, where the threshold statements might also diverge. This also confirms further special cases of the Kohayakawa--Kreuter conjecture. Along the way, we supply a short(-ish), self-contained proof of the $0$-statement of the Rödl--Ruciński theorem.

Abstract:The ground state of a one-dimensional Hubbard model with a bond-charge attraction W term at half-filling is investigated by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is confirmed that the spin gap will be closed at U>8W. But the long-range bond order wave survives even when the spin gap is closed. It indicates that the ground state is a novel dimerized spin fluid at U>8W. By a charge-spin transformation, it is shown that there should be a dimerized metallic phase at U<-8W. Furthermore, it is found that the Hubbard interaction U enhances initially the dimerization for a weak bond charge attraction W whereas it reduces monotonously the dimerization for a stronger bond charge attraction W.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of almost disjoint families which we call fin-intersecting almost disjoint families. They are related to almost disjoint families whose Vietoris Hyperspace of their Isbell-Mrówka spaces are pseudocompact. We show that under $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak c$ fin-intersecting MAD families exist generically and they also exist if $\mathfrak{a<s}$, but that there are also non fin-intersecting MAD families in ZFC. We also show that under CH, there exists fin intersecting MAD families which remain like that after adding an arbitrary quantity of Cohen reals and Random reals. These results give more models in which pseudocompact MAD families exist.

Exponential Schur and Hindman Theorem in Ramsey Theory

Abstract:Answering a conjecture of A. Sisto, J. Sahasrabudhe proved the exponential version of the Schur theorem: for every finite coloring of the naturals, there exists a monochromatic copy of $\{x,y,x^y:x\neq y\},$ which initiates the study of exponential Ramsey theory in arithmetic combinatorics. In this article, We first give two short proofs of the exponential Schur theorem, one using Zorn's lemma and another using $IP_r^\star$ van der Waerden's theorem. Then using the polynomial van der Waerden theorem iteratively we give a proof of the exponential Hindman theorem. Then applying our results we prove for every natural number $m,n$ the equation $x_n^{x_{n-1}^{\cdot^{\cdot^{\cdot^{x_1}}}}}=y_1\cdots y_m$ is partition regular, which can be considered as the exponential version of a more general version of the P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy conjecture, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. As a consequence of our results, we also prove that for every finite partition of $\mathbb{N},$ there exists two different sequences $\langle x_n\rangle_n$ and $\langle y_n\rangle_n$ such that both the multiplicative and exponential version of Hindman theorem generated by these sequences resp. are monochromatic, whereas in the counterpart in the finitary case, J. Sahasrabudhe proved that both sequences are the same. Our result can be considered as an exponential analog to the result of V. Bergelson and N. Hindman. We also prove that a large class of ultrafilters with certain properties do not exist, which could give us direct proof of the exponential Schur theorem. This result can be thought of as partial evidence of the nonexistence of Galvin-Glazer's proof of the exponential Hindman theorem.

Abstract:We prove in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in omega^omega which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. This solves a 20 year old question of Van Douwen. We also strengthen a result of J. Steprans stating that strongly MAD families of functions cannot be analytic. We show that analytic MAD families of functions, if they exist, must satisfy some strong constraints.
