Abstract:Orbital Samantha Harvey Vintage Publishing; 2024. 144 pp. Samantha Harvey's Booker Prize-shortlisted novel, Orbital , traces the view of six astronauts across the 16 orbits of the Earth made by the International Space Station (ISS) in a day, as the Sun repeatedly rises and sets over our planet. It is Harvey's attempt to capture the sense of timelessness that comes with being severed from our 24-hour day. The novel is not traditionally driven by plot or character, but by structure, gaining momentum through cycles of repetition, the rhythm of prolonged lists and florid descriptions. But although Harvey's undertaking is interesting, this slim volume struggles to take off.

Abstract:As of 2020, fewer than 600 individuals have left Earth to experience work and life in space. That number will grow as government-funded and commercial space programs move forward in countries around the globe. There are however major questions about how humans respond to spaceflight at every level, from the whole body to individual organs to specific cells to molecular pathways. Preparing for a future where longer-duration spaceflights are anticipated and people can begin to contemplate space tourism, researchers are studying astronauts to understand how the human system is affected by and adapts to space. Lara Szewczak got a window on this world, speaking with retired astronaut Scott Kelly about his late-blooming interest in science, what he's learned through the NASA Twins Study, and why space vacations might not be for everyone. They were joined by Chris Mason, a lead investigator looking at the 'omics of spaceflight. Abstract:The safe return to earth of the Shenzhou-13 crew not only marks a perfect ending to a successful mission, but also reignited the public's interest in the exploration of space. This month's Light People features a true "Space Explorer". In the past two decades, she has devoted to space robotics research and is recognized for advancing AI capabilities for future space missions. In addition, she has been actively promoting STEM through public outreach and setting role models to encourage women in STEM education and careers. She is Professor Yang Gao, winner of the Mulan Award 2019 in science and technology, a dedicated award to celebrate the achievements and success of Chinese women in the United Kingdom and wider. Prof. Gao is the Professor of Space Autonomous Systems at the University of Surrey's Space Centre, and founding head of the STAR LAB which specializes in robotic sensing, perception, visual GNC, and biomimetic mechanisms for industrial applications in extreme environments. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Field Robotics, where she demonstrates leadership in serving the wider scientific community, strengthening academia-industry connections, and cultivating new generations of sci-tech talents. Abstract:During the past year, I have taken part in an experiment in which I have been the experimental animal. I was awarded a fellowship that gave me the opportunity to take a sabbatical from science and spend a year in the School of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. The School of Literature and Creative Writing is internationally renowned, and past students include household names such as Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, Trezza Azzopardi and Tracy Chevalier. I have a keen interest in creative writing and had written a few short stories. This was a formidable but thrilling challenge. During my adventure, I realized that, in many ways, I was coming home.

Abstract:Having been fortunate enough to be the first European Astronaut to visit and live aboard the International Space Station, I would like to share with you my personal diary of this very special trip. Space Shuttle 'Endeavour', with an international crew of seven, lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 19 April for an 11-day mission, which included the delivery of the European-developed 'Raffaello' logistics module to the Station and the attachment of the Station's new 17-metre Canadian Robotic Arm. We returned to Earth, with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California, on 1 May. Raffaello had been packed for its outward journey with 10 tons of new Station equipment, including six experiment racks and two storage racks for the US 'Destiny' module, as well as supplies for the astronauts and other equipment for future construction and maintenance work. One of my main tasks during the mission was to oversee the safe unloading of all of the experiments and equipment into the Space Station. I was relieved that the whole exercise went so smoothly and very proud to have been the first astronaut to represent Europe on the International Space Station.

Abstract:In 1983, Clive Sinclair (b. 1948) was named one of Granta's twenty 'Best of Young British Novelists'. He is the author of four collections of short stories: Hearts of Gold (1979), Bedbugs (1982) and The Lady with the Laptop and Other Stories (1996), which have won – or been short-listed for – literary prizes, including the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize, the Somerset Maugham Award, the Dylan Thomas Award and the PEN Silver Pen. His latest collection, Death & Texas, was published by Peter Halban in February 2014 and long-listed for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. As well as those books he has produced ten others, among them the novels Bibliosexuality (1973), Blood Libels (1985), Cosmetic Effects (1989), Augustus Rex (1992) and Meet the Wife (2002), as well as a biography of The Brothers Singer (1983) and a travel book, Diaspora Blues: A View of Israel (1987). Sinclair's idiosyncratic work largely defies easy categorization, yet it is suffused with Jewish concerns; it is arresting, provocative and unapologetic as well as tragically farcical. His is an important voice in British Jewish literature which has always resisted the lure of cheap conformity.

The paper aims to provide a systemized picture of this topical issue, analyzing it from four connected levels: the products under development or already available on the market; the economic operators involved; the demand; the opportunities for destinations on Earth. The paper also analyses some of the key challenges for operators and territories in order to grasp the real benefits from the development of space technology for recreational purposes.

Broadcasting Nature Poetry: Una Marson and the BBC's Overseas Service

Abstract:Although the nature poems of the Jamaican writer Una Marson are usually set against her transnational projects, they are inextricable from the cosmopolitan vision described in her radio broadcasts and journalism. Studies of transnational modernism have brought to the fore Marson's participation in pan- Africanist political and literary networks, her poems' mediation of the black West Indian woman's experience, and her work promoting West Indian literature in the metropolitan institution of the BBC. Analyses of Marson as a transnational igure, however, have obscured aspects of her literary production—speciically, her nature poetry. Placing Marson's West Indian nature poetry that was broadcast by the BBC in the context of the original programs reveals the efects of moving from print publication to radio broadcast. And, along with her editorials for the Jamaican literary magazine The Cosmopolitan (1928–31), Marson's BBC broadcasts (1939–45) make the case for the ongoing relevance of the pastoral tradition to public life.

While I could be referring to the BBC TV series Doctor Who , which airs this month, I am in fact referring to the BJGP 's own Time And Relative Dimension In Space machine (TARDIS). The Life and Times section is in fact bigger on the inside, as submissions air online and a selection are chosen for a print edition, conditional on (with apologies for the awful pun) space and theme. This month's BJGP looks at 'Workforce', and accordingly Life and Times focuses on the people in primary health care as the tellers and protagonists of stories, as well as the evolving narrative in which we all participate. Abstract:The essay argues that Perdido Street Station, in response to shifts in the capitalist world system, attempts to develop a narrative form that responds to the radical shifts in space and subjectivity embedded in that transformation. By doing so, it points to the historical limitations of the concept of heterotopia developed by Foucault and, in turn, to a transgressive understanding of hybridity dependent on that concept. Instead, the novel is defined by a series of mutually implicated but oppositional terms that define the antagonistic terrain of the city. The novel cannot imagine a line of flight from the complex structures of domination and consent contained in the structures of postmodern capitalism; it richly captures a set of possibilities contained in that stalled dialectic.

Abstract:Sustainability is a hot topic in contemporary politics both nationally and internationally. While the current framing of sustainability promoted at the international level favours social policies, doubts about their possible success are growing. If social aspirations are not realised, technological solutions to ecological problems might appear to be the only options. This study contributes to the field of sociology of the future. It explores and problematizes the technologically-oriented approach to sustainability. I consider a radical case of sustainable living – a spacecraft – looking at the emerging challenges to individual human ethics and the general order of sociality. More specifically, the largest contemporary manned space project, the International Space Station (ISS), is taken into analytical focus. With the help of the Foucauldian notion of governmentality, I examine routines and discourses related to the utilization of the life support system at the ISS in regard to human conduct, both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial. Mass-media materials comprise a large part of the dataset for this research. As demonstrated, techno-functionalism characterizes sustainability as governmental rationality. It imposes a subordination of individual human actors to the general order driven by systemic objectives frequently framed in pragmatic and technical terms. Specific practices, including ethically controversial ones, might be requested from individual humans in the name of the system’s stability and efficiency. Those practices are naturalized and normalized within a truth regime constituted by scientific discourse, the authority of experts, media events and the related public discussions.

Abstract:British contemporary writer Graham Swift's newly published novel Wish You Were Here is a work explicitly concerned with space. This is firstly exemplified in the narrative form wherein space manipulates the narrative order and disparate elements are juxtaposed side by side in a spatial design. In this Way, the trajectory of linear narrative is dislocated. Besides, space in the novel is not just as an external, physical space but also lived space that embodies the internal and mental state of characters. Swift's concern with space has something to do with the larger historical context. By connecting the local and the individual with the wider global issues, Swift lays bare the violence of capitalist production of space, and the adrift and lonely life lived by the marginalized.
