Abstract:This article offers an insight into the history of the U.S. space program, including its cultural and political aspects. Starting from the vision of space as a new field of peaceful and exciting exploration, predominant in the first half of the 20 th century, moving through the period of the intensive and eventually fruitful Cold War competition between the two bel-ligerent ideological blocs led by the United States and the Soviet Union, and ending with the present-day cooling of the space enthusiasm, it focuses on the main actors and events of the century-long struggle for reaching the stars. The article is based in part on primary journalistic sources in order to capture the social atmosphere of the times it focuses on. It points out to the mid-1960s as the time when the noble aspirations and optimism of the early cosmic endeavors started to succumb to the pressure of reality, which caused the overwhelming stagnation of space initiatives, effectively ending the Golden Age of extra-terrestrial exploration. This argument is backed by an analysis of historical developments leading to and following the American conquest of the Moon.

The Art of Planetary Science: Art as a Tool for Scientific Inquiry and Public Discourse around Space Exploration

Abstract:Art can be a powerful tool in science engagement efforts to help facilitate learning and public discourse around space and space exploration. The Art of Planetary Science is an annual exhibition combining science and art which aims to help people to connect more meaningfully to science outside of traditional education models. Works solicited from scientists and from the public explore the beauty of the universe, as well as communicate and abstract scientific concepts from an artistic framework. These events offer the public a unique perspective on science and an opportunity to participate in dialogue around how and why we explore space. As an extension of the exhibition, a series of workshops for artists and educators focuses on techniques in creating science-driven art and how it can be used as a tool for scientific inquiry. We will discuss our success with these efforts and the important role that art can play in shaping the evolving narrative of humanity's relationship to space.

Abstract:This article repositions the space race as a sonic phenomenon by analyzing music and sounds related to the Soviet space program. Early triumphs such as the orbit of Sputnik I in 1957, Yuri Gagarin’s groundbreaking orbital flight in 1961, and Valentina Tereshkova’s success as the first woman in space in 1963 epitomized the complexities of the cultural Cold War and the utopian underpinnings of the Thaw. Space, the ultimate nonaligned sphere, was a new world for the planting of real and ideological flags. At the same time, these successes were key to reimagining the ideals of Soviet citizenship and national identity in the post-Stalin era. Heating up at a moment of great change and consequence, the space race provides an inroad to examine how music, media, and sound helped spread these emerging values. Drawing on the popular press, radio broadcasts, and variety television performances, this article demonstrates how music was used to humanize the cosmonauts and promote a new personal ethics—one that prized approachability and humility alongside heroism and bravery. The divergent ways that composers and performers celebrated Gagarin and Tereshkova reveal a complex politics of gender during the Thaw. Gagarin, the conqueror, was revered in marches extolling his colonizing feats; Tereshkova, the homemaker, was celebrated with romances and tales of domesticity. By demonstrating the prevalence of new media and the power of participatory practices in the sonic space race, this article contributes to our understanding of the cultural Cold War as a lived and performed experience.

Abstract:Pioneer 10 and 11 and Voyager 1 and 2 have the distinction of being the only human-made objects to have left or be on track to leave the Solar System (other than the recently launched New Horizons mission). While their scientific work is significant, the history of these four missions reveals a deeper cultural legacy. One of the primary public faces of these missions was science communicator Carl Sagan. By exploring how Sagan defined the significance of these missions in his work, we reveal the impact of these missions on our collective imaginings of spaceflight and space exploration (i.e. “astroculture”). We find that the twin Pioneers and Voyagers inspired self-reflexive ideas of human isolation and fragility within the cosmos, introduced communication with extraterrestrials as a serious aspect of spaceflight efforts, and supplemented the image of the astronaut with the robotic probe as the symbol of the human spirit of exploration.

The American Space Exploration Narrative from the Cold War through the Obama Administration

Abstract:We document how the narrative and the policies of space exploration in the U.S. have changed over the past 50 years. We first examine the history of the U.S. space exploration program and also assess three current conditions of space exploration including: (1) the increasing role of the private sector, (2) the influence of global politics, and (3) the focus on a human mission to Mars. We identify five rhetorical themes: competition, prestige, collaboration, leadership, and a new paradigm. These themes are then used to analyze the content of forty documents from eight presidential administrations. The historical narrative and content analysis together suggest that space exploration has developed from a discourse about a bipolar world composed of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. into a complicated field that encompass many new players. We make three observations: (1) there is a disconnect between stated U.S. policy goals and the implementation of those goals, (2) the U.S. communicates mixed messages regarding its intent to be both the dominant leader in space exploration and also a committed participant in international collaborations, and (3) the U.S. cannot remain a true pioneer in space exploration if it does not embrace the realities of globalization and the changing dynamics within space exploration. We conclude with three suggestions: (1) the U.S. government and NASA should critically examine space exploration priorities and commit to implementing a program that will further realistic policy and goals, (2) the U.S. should re-examine its intention to play a dominant leadership role in space exploration and consider emphasizing a commitment toward active participation in international collaboration in space, and (3) the U.S. should fully embrace the new paradigm of space exploration by lowering barriers that hinder competitiveness.

Abstract:From the geocentric, closed world model of Antiquity to the wraparound universe models of relativistic cosmology, the parallel history of space representations in science and art illustrates the fundamental role of geometric imagination in innovative findings. Through the analysis of works of various artists and scientists like Plato, Durer, Kepler, Escher, Grisey or the present author, it is shown how the process of creation in science and in the arts rests on aesthetical principles such as symmetry, regular polyhedra, laws of harmonic proportion, tessellations, group theory, etc., as well as beauty, conciseness and emotional approach of the world.

Abstract:World population and the number of cultural artifacts are growing exponentially or faster, while cultural interaction approaches the fidelity of a global nervous system. Every day hundreds of millions of images are loaded into social networks by users all over the world. As this myriad of new artifacts veils the view into the past, like city lights covering the night sky, it is easy to forget that there is more than one Starry Night, the painting by Van Gogh. Like in ecology, where saving rare species may help us in treating disease, art and architectural history can reveal insights into the past, which may hold keys to our own future. With humanism under threat, facing the challenge of understanding the structure and dynamics of art and culture, both qualitatively and quantitatively, is more crucial now than it ever was. The purpose of this article is to provide perspective in the aim of figuring out the process of art history - not art history as a discipline, but the actual history of all made things, in the spirit of George Kubler and Marcel Duchamp. In other words, this article deals with the grand challenge of developing a systematic science of art and culture, no matter what, and no matter how.

Abstract:This chapter introduces the historical themes and historiographical questions jointly addressed by contributions to the Militarizing Outer Space volume. Building on recent scholarship on the cultural history of violence, dystopia and the Cold War, it argues that militant astroculture, comprising fantastic scenarios and political rationales, technological promises and apocalyptic threats, proved instrumental in the legitimization and popular appeal of spaceflight throughout the twentieth century. Historicizing key tropes such as ‘dual use,’ ‘space superiority’ and ‘high ground’ commonly evoked to advocate the militarization of space, the chapter probes astroculture’s belligerent facets from the 1920s to the 1980s, from early European space war imaginaries to Ronald Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’ declaration.

Abstract:In the academic field, Soviet-American relations are more often studied in the context of the Cold War, while bilateral contacts in the first half of the 20th century are much less represented. Research focuses more on formal cultural diplomacy, implemented through the organization of cultural exhibitions, film festivals and creative initiatives, rather than on visits by foreign intellectuals motivated to see the Soviet country from the inside. The article examines the plot-forming categories of “space” and “time” in the travelogue works of American writers who personally visited the USSR in the 1920–1940s. The focus of the study is the travel diaries of Theodore Dreiser, Langston Hughes and John Steinbeck. Each travel journal operates within its own spatial boundaries and time period within the geography of the USSR and a given chronological period of the 20th century. The key aspect of this work is the analysis of the chronotope (according to M.M. Bakhtin), which represents the interconnection of temporal and spatial relations in the narrative. Being constructed by the writer, the chronotope consists of premises, signs, symbols and ideas that bear the imprint of the time of a given period and are inextricably linked with the figure of the author of each travel diary under consideration. This approach to the analysis of the diary text makes it possible to reveal the writer’s understanding of the reality around him, which he attributes with meaning in the context of the historical and political realities of the given epoch.

Abstract:Bold colour images from telescopes act as extraordinary ambassadors for research astronomers because they pique the public's curiosity. But are they snapshots documenting physical reality? Or are we looking at artistic spacescapes created by digitally manipulating astronomy images? This paper provides a tour of how original black and white data, from all regimes of the electromagnetic spectrum, are converted into the colour images gracing popular magazines, numerous websites, and even clothing. The history and method of the technical construction of these images is outlined. However, the paper focuses on introducing the scientific reader to visual literacy (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://e.g.human" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> perception) and techniques from art (e.g. composition, colour theory) since these techniques can produce not only striking but politically powerful public outreach images. When created by research astronomers, the cultures of science and visual art can be balanced and the image can illuminate scientific results sufficiently strongly that the images are also used in research publications. Included are reflections on how they could feedback into astronomy research endeavours and future forms of visualization as well as on the relevance of outreach images to visual art.

Abstract:Outer space is often described as a frontier – an unsettled, mysterious or wild place that should be explored and eventually inhabited. The metaphor evokes a pioneer spirit and a sense of freedom, but it is also bound up with violent histories of settler colonialism and social injustice. Although the frontier narrative remains prevalent in political, commercial and media discourses in the United States and elsewhere, we know little about whether the public understands space exploration in this way. We also lack studies about how those working to popularise space exploration and make it comprehensible to a global audience understand and apply the frontier narrative. A long-term ethnographic study of their work shows that their understandings of the space frontier are refracted through everyday forms of sociality and experience that they cultivate near Boca Chica in South Texas, where SpaceX builds and tests Starship prototypes. The labour of imagination performed by SpaceX fans and space creators upends the problematic myth of the frontier and points towards alternative ways of understanding space exploration.

Abstract:<span>Despite the broadly held assumption that having an iconic building designed by a celebrity architect can effectively rebrand a place, draw tourists, and stimulate economic activity, star architecture does more than just contribute to the economic fortunes of regional cities. Iconic projects also emerge from and reflect the discourses, desires, and identities of city dwellers in the places they are built. In this paper, we use newspaper coverage of five iconic or star architecture buildings in Denver, Colorado, USA, to expose how architecture contributes to local discourses. What emerges is a complex picture of how local press engage with star architecture projects. Star architecture buildings do more than just contribute to the economic fortunes of a city or region: they also contribute to the mental map of a place, become contributors to city identity, and create opportunities for conversations about culture and architecture, including the basis for comparisons with other cities.</span>

Abstract:In this article, I share ways in which I have used the artworks of contemporary artists to encourage middle school students to reflect on the concepts of identity, diversity, and social justice. Specifically, I focus on the Comfort Hair series by Yuni Kim Lang, a Michigan-based Korean American artist, and a piece from the Giant series, "Kikito (Tecate, Mexico-USA, 2017)," by French street artist JR. When I shared images of the artworks with the students, the participating teenagers discussed the pieces verbally as well as textually via social media. They then created artworks based on their reflections. Although the quality of student outcomes varied in both the text-based discussions and drawing activity, they clearly showed that the work of Yuni Kim Lang and JR deeply engaged the students in a critical examination of the issues of identity and diversity and sparked their interest in the role of the visual arts as sources of social justice and systematical change.

Abstract:Whereas the rise of private space entrepreneurship is indisputable, we contend that contrary to the "NewSpace" narrative, the development of privately owned and operated human spacefaring does not dispel or fundamentally alter the American space dream, but rather implies continuity of the narrative of America as the dominant global space power, specifically regarding a return to the Moon and with the explicit aim of colonizing Mars. Herein, we analyze the continuity of the American space dream and how it is expressed by public and private space actors, as well as being supported by popular culture, entertainment, and an active space enthusiast community. We maintain that the continuity of the American space dream as a unifying national narrative is facilitated by how private spacefaring is dependent on the U.S. Government's emphasis on the pivotal role of private space industry for space exploration. This dependent relationship provides incentives for private space entrepreneurs to share and leverage the established American space dream. The continuity of the American space dream is achieved through a prevailing, yet reconfigured, government-industrial complex.
Beyond Boundaries of Space & Time: Transmigrations in Contemporary Art

Abstract:This paper focuses on the dislodging of hegemonic narratives of culture and identity through formations of contemporary art that are spatially and temporally located in a field of uneven material and immaterial flows. This is a position that prompts an exploration of emerging issues in context of conditions of global mobility. In building an argument for an expanded art theory, I draw from a diverse range of artists, curators, critics and theorists to investigate the global networks of relationships influencing discourses of contemporary art and its technologies of production and dissemination. Analysis of art objects and/or events informed by transmigration involves articulating the ways in which they displace and contest established discourses and hegemonic narratives without using, in the process, an alternative narrative which is in itself exclusive and bounded. Such art objects and/or events exceed and surpass any single code, central ideology or static system. The complexity of contemporary art informed by conditions of transmigration is grounded in an in-between space between and across different borders. In the global context, with its transnational networks and transmigration of ideas and people, contemporary art has become so highly multifaceted and mobile that it challenges established definitions, crosses boundaries and calls for new ways of understanding the multiplicities of space, time and potential.

Abstract:We present a computational method to quantify the geopolitical impact of a space mission, based on the national budget and data logs of previous missions, and evidencing how even if some missions succeed, they can bring negative effects to the sponsored country. The objective of this research is to study how the success (or failure) of a space mission can bring an economical and political benefit (or loss) to a country. By retrieving various data, including sentiment from #hashtags related to the considered space missions, national budgets for space exploration, and the reliability of space launch systems, from social networks, public institutions, and online repositories, we propose an equation to evaluate the geopolitical importance of a space mission for a particular country or space agency. The geopolitical equation can be used by public institutions or private companies to estimate the potential impact of a space mission on public opinion and international relationships, which can be either positive or negative, as even successful missions may negatively affect international relationships and negotiations with some countries and their partners. Also we combine the ideology of classic social policy with a security and space mission point of view, to enlighten cultural, institutional, and political limits in public spending decisions.
