Abstract:We present the development of an open-source software called OpenSpace that bridges the gap between scientific discoveries and public dissemination and thus paves the way for the next generation of science communication and data exploration. We describe how the platform enables interactive presentations of dynamic and time-varying processes by domain experts to the general public. The concepts are demonstrated through four cases: Image acquisitions of the New Horizons and Rosetta spacecraft, the dissemination of space weather phenomena, and the display of high-resolution planetary images. Each case has been presented at public events with great success. These cases highlight the details of data acquisition, rather than presenting the final results, showing the audience the value of supporting the efforts of the scientific discovery.

Abstract:[Highly abridged, from executive summary] As much as NewSpace presents opportunities, there are significant challenges that must be overcome, requiring engagement with policy makers to influence domestic and international space governance. Failure to do so could result in a range of long-lasting negative outcomes for science and space stewardship. How will the Canadian astronomical community engage with NewSpace? What are the implications for NewSpace on the astro-environment, including Earth orbits, lunar and cis-lunar orbits, and surfaces of celestial bodies? This white paper analyzes the rapid changes in space use and what those changes could mean for Canadian astronomers. Our recommendations are as follows: Greater cooperation between the astronomical and the Space Situational Awareness communities is needed. Build closer ties between the astronomical community and Global Affairs Canada (GAC). Establish a committee for evaluating the astro-environmental impacts of human space use, including on and around the Moon and other bodies. CASCA and the Tri-Council should coordinate to identify programs that would enable Canadian astronomers to participate in pay-for-use services at appropriate funding levels. CASCA should continue to foster a relationship with CSA, but also build close ties to the private space industry. Canadian-led deep space missions are within Canada's capabilities, and should be pursued.

Abstract:Professional astronomy is historically not an environment of diverse identities. In recognizing that public outreach efforts affect career outcomes for young people, it is important to assess the demographics of those being reached and continually consider strategies for successfully engaging underrepresented groups. One such outreach event, the International Astronomical Youth Camp (IAYC), has a 50-year history and has reached ~1700 participants from around the world. We find that the IAYC is doing well in terms of gender (59% female, 4.7% non-binary at the most recent camp) and LGBT+ representation, whereas black and ethnic minorities are lacking. In this proceeding, we report the current landscape of demographics applying to and attending the IAYC; the efforts we are making to increase diversity amongst participants; the challenges we face; and our future plans to bridge these gaps, not only for the benefit of the camp but for society overall.

Astronomy's relationship with the lands and communities of Maunakea

Abstract:Astronomy is at a turning point in its history and in its relations with the Indigenous peoples who are the generational stewards of land where several of our main observatories are located. The controversy regarding the further development of astronomy facilities on Maunakea is probably the most significant and publicized conflict about the use of such land in the name of science. Thousands have stood in resistance, elders were arrested, and the community is divided. Astronomy's access to one of its most emblematic sites is at risk. This situation challenges our professional practice, the projects we build on Indigenous lands, and our relationships with the people who live within these lands and with society in general. This paper attempts to share the perspective of the authors on the historical events, including the very recent past, through the lens of our understanding and opinions; to provide transparency, with humility, into our process of introspection and transformation; and to share our hopes and ambitions as leaders from Maunakea Observatories for the future of astronomy in Hawai'i, as advocated by the Astro2020 report from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; and to suggest ways for the profession to commit to this long-term vision.

Abstract:The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) and the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) Department serve the strategic goal of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) to broaden public awareness of, support for, and participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). ODI operates a suite of programs designed to support underrepresented minority undergraduate, graduate students in pursuit of careers in STEM. EPO highlights the discoveries, technologies, and careers pioneered and exemplified by the NRAO via multipurpose engagement strategies that include face-to-face and standalone learning programs, products, and public services for the general public and K-12 students, with attention to reaching diverse audiences. These established and diverse programs are described, along with proposals for new, unique opportunities enabled by the development and realization of a next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA).

Abstract:For decades we have been searching for an answer to the knotty question, “do aliens exist?.” Other questions in line are: “where are they?,” “are they like us, sophisticated intelligent beings?” or “do they exist in the form of simpler lifeforms?,” “Have they ever visited us?,” “Why haven't we encountered them yet?,” “or have we?” To satiate this curiosity, astrophysicists and astronomers have come up with innumerable theories and ideas, engaged in building facilities and institutes and come up with a planet-wide effort for the search of extraterrestrial intelligence — SETI @ home. This article will take a ride through time, from the first documented idea to look for extraterrestrial beings to the current exploration of this field.
The Art of Planetary Science: Art as a Tool for Scientific Inquiry and Public Discourse around Space Exploration

Abstract:Art can be a powerful tool in science engagement efforts to help facilitate learning and public discourse around space and space exploration. The Art of Planetary Science is an annual exhibition combining science and art which aims to help people to connect more meaningfully to science outside of traditional education models. Works solicited from scientists and from the public explore the beauty of the universe, as well as communicate and abstract scientific concepts from an artistic framework. These events offer the public a unique perspective on science and an opportunity to participate in dialogue around how and why we explore space. As an extension of the exhibition, a series of workshops for artists and educators focuses on techniques in creating science-driven art and how it can be used as a tool for scientific inquiry. We will discuss our success with these efforts and the important role that art can play in shaping the evolving narrative of humanity's relationship to space.

Abstract:To-date, all human economic activity has depended on the resources of a single planet, and it has long been recognized that developments in space exploration could in principle open our closed planetary economy to external resources of energy and raw materials. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these possibilities, with several private companies established with the stated aim of exploiting extraterrestrial resources. Space science and exploration are among the potential beneficiaries of space resources because their use may permit the construction and operation of scientific facilities in space that will be unaffordable if all the required material and energy resources have to be lifted out of Earth's gravity. Examples may include the next generation of large space telescopes, sample return missions to the outer Solar System, and human research stations on the Moon and Mars. These potential scientific benefits of extraterrestrial resource utilisation were the topic of a Royal Astronomical Society specialist discussion meeting held on 8 April 2016 and summarised here.

Abstract:Due to its technological, scientific and cultural dimensions, astronomy is a unique discipline to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are currently nearly 30 million refugees in the world. While there are many (and very necessary) programmes supporting their basic needs, different indicators suggest that the resolution to refugee and internal displacement situations require not only humanitarian interventions, but also development-led actions. One of these initiatives is Amanar: Under the Same Sky, a project designed to support the Sahrawi refugee community by using astronomy to enhance their resilience and engagement in the community, through skill development and self-empowerment activities.

Abstract:The study of the Universe and all its contents, the physical phenomena and the evolution of the sky objects has always attracted the Humanity. The Astronomy begins to try to explain these things, others sciences too. Therefore, we think a good first contact with the science world can be using a mobile inflatable planetarium and a portable telescope to show the amazing things about Astronomy. The first one allows us to show, in minutes, all the movements of the stars during a full night, explaining about observational Astronomy and so on. In addition to that, using a telescope we can show in real these movements and some interesting details about planets and constellations. The feedback from the students and teachers after the planetarium sections was important to us to evaluate the real necessity of works like that. The conclusion was directly: the whole audience loved the experience and almost all pretend go back in the next time.

Abstract:While geophysical exploration of Earth is well established as a critical method for understanding planetary processes, many current and planned missions offer great opportunities for geophysicists to apply their skills and expertise to space exploration. Programs such as NASA's Artemis aiming to bring humans back to the moon and the James Webb Space Telescope for deep space imaging, the 10-year extension plan for the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program's Chang'e missions, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's Martian Moons eXploration program, and the European Space Agency's European Large Logistics Lander targeting the moon are just a few examples. NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program proposes to send two commercial landers to the moon every year for the remainder of the decade. Several already-manifested payloads in the program involve geophysical instrumentation including heat flow probes, magnetotelluric sounding systems, and seismometers. Seismic data continue to arrive from NASA's InSight mission to Mars as the dusty solar panels still deliver a little energy, emphasizing that geophysics is and will remain an important tool for planetary exploration moving forward.

Abstract:In the next decade, there is an opportunity for very high return on investment of relatively small budgets by elevating the priority of smallsat funding in heliophysics. We've learned in the past decade that these missions perform exceptionally well by traditional metrics, e.g., papers/year/\$M (Spence et al. 2022 -- <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.02968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.02968">arXiv:2206.02968</a>). It is also well established that there is a "leaky pipeline" resulting in too little diversity in leadership positions (see the National Academies Report at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://www.nationalacademies.org/our-work/increasing-diversity-in-the-leadership-of-competed-space-missions" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). Prioritizing smallsat funding would significantly increase the number of opportunities for new leaders to learn -- a crucial patch for the pipeline and an essential phase of career development. At present, however, there are far more proposers than the available funding can support, leading to selection ratios that can be as low as 6% -- in the bottom 0.5th percentile of selection ratios across the history of ROSES. Prioritizing SmallSat funding and substantially increasing that selection ratio are the fundamental recommendations being made by this white paper.

Abstract:Gravitational-wave astronomy has revolutionized humanity's view of the universe, a revolution driven by observations that no other field can make. This white paper describes an observatory that builds on decades of investment by the National Science Foundation and that will drive discovery for decades to come: Cosmic Explorer. Major discoveries in astronomy are driven by three related improvements: better sensitivity, higher precision, and opening new observational windows. Cosmic Explorer promises all three and will deliver an order-of-magnitude greater sensitivity than LIGO. Cosmic Explorer will push the gravitational-wave frontier to almost the edge of the observable universe using technologies that have been proven by LIGO during its development. With the unprecedented sensitivity that only a new facility can deliver, Cosmic Explorer will make discoveries that cannot yet be anticipated, especially since gravitational waves are both synergistic with electromagnetic observations and can reach into regions of the universe that electromagnetic observations cannot explore. With Cosmic Explorer, scientists can use the universe as a laboratory to test the laws of physics and study the nature of matter. Cosmic Explorer allows the United States to continue its leading role in gravitational-wave science and the international network of next-generation observatories. With its extraordinary discovery potential, Cosmic Explorer will deliver revolutionary observations across astronomy, physics, and cosmology including: Black Holes and Neutron Stars Throughout Cosmic Time, Multi-Messenger Astrophysics and Dynamics of Dense Matter, New Probes of Extreme Astrophysics, Fundamental Physics and Precision Cosmology, Dark Matter and the Early Universe.

Abstract:Traditionally, academic labs conduct open-ended research with the primary focus on discoveries with long-term value, rather than direct products that can be deployed in the real world. On the other hand, research in the industry is driven by its expected commercial return on investment, and hence focuses on a real world product with short-term timelines. In both cases, opportunity is selective, often available to researchers with advanced educational backgrounds. Research often happens behind closed doors and may be kept confidential until either its publication or product release, exacerbating the problem of AI reproducibility and slowing down future research by others in the field. As many research organizations tend to exclusively focus on specific areas, opportunities for interdisciplinary research reduce. Undertaking long-term bold research in unexplored fields with non-commercial yet great public value is hard due to factors including the high upfront risk, budgetary constraints, and a lack of availability of data and experts in niche fields. Only a few companies or well-funded research labs can afford to do such long-term research. With research organizations focused on an exploding array of fields and resources spread thin, opportunities for the maturation of interdisciplinary research reduce. Apart from these exigencies, there is also a need to engage citizen scientists through open-source contributors to play an active part in the research dialogue. We present a short case study of SpaceML, an extension of the Frontier Development Lab, an AI accelerator for NASA. SpaceML distributes open-source research and invites volunteer citizen scientists to partake in development and deployment of high social value products at the intersection of space and AI.

Abstract:A diverse workforce and open culture are essential to satisfaction in the workplace, to innovation and creativity, and to the ability of an organisation to attract and retain talent. To ensure a diverse and inclusive workplace, efforts can be made to remove and prevent physical, systematic and attitudinal barriers. The invited talk on Diversity and Inclusion in Astronomy given by Mich\`ele P\'eron at this conference set the stage for discussion of this important topic, and presented how some of our institutions are addressing the issues and problems that exist, so as to set up a positive work environment for all. The aim of this BoF was to take some of the points raised by P\'eron and present them for discussion by the BoF participants. It was intended that the BoF be a forum for frank discussion and positive suggestions that participants could take back to their institutions.

Abstract:Society today is experiencing a golden age of robotic space exploration and interest in human spaceflight has regained popularity as entities like NASA and the burgeoning private space industry refocus attention on sending humans back to the Moon and into orbit. This is a critical turning point for society, as some look to our future as a possibly spacefaring civilization while others wonder who will be enabled to participate in that space exploration. Historically, Disabled individuals and other minoritized groups have been excluded from space science and technology fields, as well as from participation in astronaut programs. However, human space exploration can be made more inclusive with research and innovation in the area of accessible design. Universal accessible design brings advantages to all individuals operating in an environment, and the ability of Disabled individuals to adapt to environments not suited for them can be leveraged as a strength in spaceflight. In this work, disabled and mixed ability crews performed research on parabolic zero-gravity flights which produce weightlessness, exploring tools and technologies which may mitigate challenges for disabled individuals operating in space-like environments. Here we discuss the experiments performed on our flights, highlighting what types of technologies offer promising solutions for accessible design of space habitats, suits, and tools, and accommodations which can enable future disabled astronauts to operate safely in space. We will highlight universal design solutions that not only provide access to previously excluded researchers but have the potential to improve safety and efficiency for all astronauts, regardless of disability. We will also discuss operational strategies which can be incorporated into training and procedure to leverage the strengths of mixed ability crews in ensuring everyone operates effectively together.

Driving action on the climate crisis through Astronomers for Planet Earth and beyond

Abstract:While an astronomer's job is typically to look out from Earth, the seriousness of the climate crisis has meant a shift in many astronomers' focus. Astronomers are starting to consider how our resource requirements may contribute to this crisis and how we may better conduct our research in a more environmentally sustainable fashion. Astronomers for Planet Earth is an international organisation (more than 1,700 members from over 70 countries as of November 2022) that seeks to answer the call for sustainability to be at the heart of astronomers' practices. In this article, we review the organisation's history, summarising the proactive, collaborative efforts and research into astronomy sustainability conducted by its members. We update the state of affairs with respect to the carbon footprint of astronomy research, noting an improvement in renewable energy powering supercomputing facilities in Australia, reducing that component of our footprint by a factor of 2--3. We discuss how, despite accelerated changes made throughout the pandemic, we still must address the format of our meetings. Using recent annual meetings of the Australian and European astronomical societies as examples, we demonstrate that the more online-focussed a meeting is, the greater its attendance and the lower its emissions.

Abstract:In an age of media saturation, how can astronomers succeed in grabbing the public's attention to increase awareness and understanding of astronomy? Here I discuss some creative alternatives to press releases, public lectures, television programs, books, magazine articles, and other traditional ways of bringing astronomy to a wide audience. By thinking outside the box and employing novel tools - from truly terrible sci-fi movies, to modern Stonehenges, to music from the stars - astronomers are finding effective new ways of communicating the wonders of the universe to people of all ages.
