Abstract:The reaction pp -> pf (eta pi pi) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is clear evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870). In addition, there is evidence for an a0(980)pi$ decay mode of both resonances and an f2(1270)eta decay mode of the eta2(1870). No evidence is found for a JPC = 2++ a2(1320)pi wave.

Abstract:We investigate some general properties of linear gauge fixings and gauge-field correlators in lattice models with noncompact U(1) gauge symmetry. In particular, we show that, even in the presence of a gauge fixing, some gauge-field observables (like the photon-mass operator) are not well-defined, depending on the specific gauge fixing adopted and on its implementation. Numerical tests carried out in the three-dimensional noncompact lattice Abelian Higgs model fully support the analytical results and provide further insights.

Abstract:The quantization of Yang-Mills field theories requires the introduction of a gauge fixing which leads to a violation of the Local Gauss Law described by the so-called Gauss operator. We discuss the local quantizations of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the possible Gauss operators, which are argued to have a more physical meaning than the gauge fixings. We focus the attention on the local quantizations which leave the global gauge group and a subgroup of local gauge transformations unbroken, as the Feynman quantization of quantum Electrodynamics, and show that in the non-abelian case such properties cannot be realized together with Lorentz covariance; thus, quite generally, one cannot have the structural properties of the Feynman quantization of Quantum Electrodynamics. By relaxing the condition of Lorentz covariance, we obtain a classification of Gauss operators, which satisfy gauge covariant conservation laws and generate non-trivial residual subgroups of local gauge transformations.

Abstract:We discuss general aspects of charge conjugation symmetry in Euclidean lattice field theories, including its dynamical gauging. Our main focus is $O(2) = U(1)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2 $ gauge theory, which we construct using a non-abelian generalization of the Villain formulation via gauging the charge conjugation symmetry of pure $U(1)$ gauge theory. We describe how to construct gauge-invariant non-local operators in a theory with gauged charge conjugation symmetry, and use it to define Wilson and 't Hooft lines as well as non-invertible symmetry operators. Our lattice discretization preserves the higher-group and non-invertible symmetries of $O(2)$ gauge theory, which we explore in detail. In particular, these symmetries give rise to selection rules for extended operators and their junctions, and constrain the properties of the worldvolume degrees of freedom on twist vortices (also known as Alice or Cheshire strings). We propose a phase diagram of the theory coupled to dynamical magnetic monopoles and twist vortices, where the various generalized symmetries are typically only emergent.

Abstract:We review the status of our recent work on the gauge-fixing approach to lattice chiral gauge theories. New numerical results in the reduced version of a model with a U(1) gauge symmetry are presented which strongly indicate that the factorization of the correlation functions of the left-handed neutral and right-handed charged fermion fields, which we established before in perturbation theory, holds also nonperturbatively.

Abstract:In this paper, we revisit the Dressing Field Method (DFM) in the context of Quantum (Gauge) Field Theories (QFT). In order to adapt this method to the functional path integral formalism of QFT, we depart from the usual differential geometry approach used so far to study the DFM which also allows to tackle the infinite dimension of the field spaces. Our main result is that gauge fixing is an instance of the application of the DFM. The Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure and the so-called unitary gauge are revisited in light of this result.

Abstract:We consider the covariant gauge field theory of fractons, which describe a new type of quasiparticles exhibiting novel and nontrivial properties. In particular, we focus on the field theoretical peculiarities which characterize this theory, starting from the fact that, if we accept the paradigm that quantum field theories are defined by their symmetries, fractons unavoidably come together with linearized gravity. The standard Faddeev-Popov procedure to gauge fix the theory leads to a scalar gauge condition, which has two important drawbacks: it is frozen in the Landau gauge and linearized gravity cannot be obtained as a limit. In this paper we adopt a tensorially alternative gauge fixing, which avoids both problems. In particular, this allows to show that important physical features, like the counting of the degrees of freedom, do not depend on a particular gauge choice, as expected. Moreover, the resulting gauge fixed theory contains both fractons and linearized gravity as a limit, differently from the standard scalar choice.

Quantum Simulation with Gauge Fixing: from Ising Lattice Gauge Theory to Dynamical Flux Model

Abstract:Quantum simulation of synthetic dynamic gauge field has attracted much attentions in recent years. There are two traditional ways to simulate gauge theories. One is to directly simulate the full Hamiltonian of gauge theories with local gauge symmetries. And the other is to engineer the projected Hamiltonian in one gauge subsector. In this work, we provide the third way towards the simulation of gauge theories based on \emph{gauge fixing}. To demonstrate this concept, we fix the gauge of an Ising lattice gauge field coupled with spinless fermions on a ladder geometry. After the gauge fixing, this gauge theory is reduced to a simpler model, in which fermions hop on a ladder with a fluctuating dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ flux. Then we shows that this model can be realized via Floquet engineering in ultracold atomic gases. By analytical and numerical studies of this dynamical flux model, we deduce that there is confinement to deconfinement phase transition in the original unfixed gauge theory. This work paves the way to quantum simulate lattice gauge theory using the concept of gauge fixing, relevant both for condensed matter and high energy physics.

Abstract:We obtain a new symplectic Lagrangian density and deduce Faddeev-Jackiw (FJ) generalized brackets of the gauge invariant self-dual fields interacting with gauge fields. We further give FJ quantization of this system. Furthermore, the FJ method is compared with Dirac method, the results show the two methods are equivalent in the quantization of this system. And by the practical research in this letter, it can be found that the FJ method is really simpler than the Dirac method, namely, the FJ method obviates the need to distinguish primary and secondary constraints and first- and second-class constraints. Therefore, the FJ method is a more economical and effective method of quantization.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking Lattice Regularizations and their Continuum Limit

Abstract:Lattice regularizations are pivotal in the non-perturbative quantization of gauge field theories. Wilson's proposal to employ group-valued link fields simplifies the regularization of gauge fields in principal fiber bundles, preserving gauge symmetry within the discretized lattice theory. Maintaining gauge symmetry is desirable as its violation can introduce unwanted degrees of freedom. However, not all theories with gauge symmetries admit gauge-invariant lattice regularizations, as observed in general relativity where the diffeomorphism group serves as the gauge symmetry. In such cases, gauge symmetry-breaking regularizations become necessary. In this paper, we argue that a broken lattice gauge symmetry is acceptable as long as gauge symmetry is restored in the continuum limit. We propose a method to construct the continuum limit for a class of lattice-regularized Hamiltonian field theories, where the regularization breaks the Lie algebra of first-class constraints. Additionally, we offer an approach to represent the exact gauge group on the Hilbert space of the continuum theory. The considered class of theories is limited to those with first-class constraints linear in momenta, excluding the entire gauge group of general relativity but encompassing its subgroup of spatial diffeomorphisms. We discuss potential techniques for extending this quantization to the full gauge group.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. Simulation of quantum field theories and fundamental interactions is one of the most challenging tasks in modern particle physics. Classical computers generally fail to reproduce accurate results when it comes to strongly coupled theories such as QCD. Recent developments in quantum technologies open up the possibility of simulating such physical regimes by using quantum computers. In this paper, we study the quantum resource related to the simulability of a quantum theory, i.e. non-stabilizerness for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with discrete symmetry gauge groups. We show that enforcing gauge constraints for [math] LGTs has no cost in terms of this resource and discuss the relation between non-abelianity of the gauge group with the average non-stabilizerness of the gauge invariant Hilbert space.

Emergence of Gauss' Law in a $Z_2$ Lattice Gauge Theory

Abstract:We explore a $Z_2$ Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory in one spatial dimension with a coupling $h$, without imposing any Gauss' law constraint. We show that in our model $h=0$ is a free deconfined quantum critical point containing massless fermions where all Gauss' law sectors are equivalent. The coupling $h$ is a relevant perturbation of this critical point and fermions become massive due to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. To study the emergent Gauss' law sectors at low temperatures in this massive phase we use a quantum Monte Carlo method that samples configurations of the partition function written in a basis in which local conserved charges are diagonal. We find that two Gauss' law sectors, related by particle-hole symmetry, emerge naturally. When the system is doped with an extra particle, many more Gauss's law sectors related by translation invariance emerge. Using results in the range $0.01 < h \leq 0.15 $ we find that three different mass scales of the model behave like $h^{p}$ where $p \approx 0.579$.

Abstract:We analyze the gauge fixing precision dependence of some non-local quark-blinear lattice operators interesting in computing parton physics for several measurements, using 5 lattice spacings ranging from 0.032 fm to 0.121 fm. Our results show that gauge dependent non-local measurements are significantly more sensitive to the precision of gauge fixing than anticipated. The impact of imprecise gauge fixing is significant for fine lattices and long distances. For instance, even with the typically defined precision of Landau gauge fixing of $10^{-8}$, the deviation caused by imprecise gauge fixing can reach 12 percent, when calculating the trace of Wilson lines at 1.2 fm with a lattice spacing of approximately 0.03 fm. Similar behavior has been observed in $\xi$ gauge and Coulomb gauge as well. For both quasi PDFs and quasi TMD-PDFs operators renormalized using the RI/MOM scheme, convergence for different lattice spacings at long distance is only observed when the precision of Landau gauge fixing is sufficiently high. To describe these findings quantitatively, we propose an empirical formula to estimate the required precision.

Abstract:A covariant nature of the Langevin equation in Ito calculus is clarified in applying stochastic quantization method to U(N) and SU(N) lattice gauge theories. The stochastic process is expressed in a manifestly general coordinate covariant form as a collective field theory on the group manifold. Abstract:Working within the framework of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), we construct a set of three operators suitable for identifying positions on a spin-network configuration. Two different proposals are presented. The former relies on known properties of operators for angles, while the latter proposal combines both the angle and length operators, two geometric quantities which have already been discussed in the LQG literature. Both of them are defined on the kinematical Hilbert space, in a background-independent fashion. Computing their action on coherent states, we are able to study some relevant properties such us the spectra of these operators, which turn out to be discrete. In particular, we focus on the algebra generated by these operators and, remarkably, it turns out that positions do not commute for both our proposals. This provides a realization of space-time noncommutativity in the context of LQG, a finding which, taking different shapes, have appeared recursively in the literature. The semiclassical regime, necessary to make contact with coordinates on manifolds, is also explored and, specifically, is given by the large-spin limit in which commutativity can be restored. Finally, building on well-established results, we discuss how it is possible to regularize these operators.

Abstract:We discuss the canonical quantization of $U(1)_k$ Chern-Simons theory on a spatial lattice. In addition to the usual local Gauss law constraints, the physical Hilbert space is defined by 1-form gauge constraints implementing the compactness of the $U(1)$ gauge group, and (depending on the details of the spatial lattice) non-local constraints which project out unframed Wilson loops. Though the ingredients of the lattice model are bosonic, the physical Hilbert space is finite-dimensional, with exactly $k$ ground states on a spatial torus. We quantize both the bosonic (even level) and fermionic (odd level) theories, describing in detail how the latter depends on a choice of spin structure.
