Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:A spiral metalens is developed via special coordinate transformation metasurfaces to achieve single‐shot photon's orbital and spin angular momentum determination. Such a monolithic metalens allows for the identification of a maximum of 168 orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in the case of mode resolution 3 theoretically. By using spiral trajectories instead of circular trajectories, this method can resolve higher‐order OAM modes. Sorting orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum (SAM) of photons is crucial for optical communications, optical storage, and quantum information processing, wherein complicated optical setups or bulky devices are conventionally utilized to determine the angular momentum via repetitive interference or diffractive projection measurements. Recently, advancements in compact and single‐shot OAM detection have been made via coordinate transformation metasurfaces. Nevertheless, most of these strategies require precise separation and alignment between multiple components and cannot simultaneously distinguish full angular momentum states. Besides, the single‐shot maximum identifiable OAM mode numbers are generally limited to 60 due to the tradeoff between the mode space and reduced‐cross‐talk mode interval. Here, this work puts forward and experimentally demonstrates a monolithic spiral metalens (SML) for ultrahigh‐capacity sorting full angular momentum states. The SML focus the incident vortex beam into multiple‐turn spiral ring rather than a circle ring on the focal plane according to its topological charge, with the mode order ranging from −250 to 250. Consequently, the maximum identifiable OAM mode number is up to 168 under a single‐shot measurement, which largely surpass the best results reported hitherto. The experimental results obtained in the telecom band underpin the design approach, which may find great potential in high‐capacity communication and storage applications.

Abstract:The conventional Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) waves, which propagate along the main axis are transformed into the plane spiral OAM waves based on Gradient index Meta-surface. The cell of the meta-surface contains three layers with a metallic `H', a dielectric spacer and a metal plate. Using the radial arrangement of the metallic `H' cells, the conventional OAM waves can be transformed into the plane spiral OAM waves when they normally illuminate on the meta-surface. Thus, multiple OAM beams can be converted into the corresponding PSOAM beams using the same meta-surface and be superposed to realize the structured EM waves.

Abstract:A new type of spatially structured light field carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode with any non-integer topological order, referred to as the spiral fractional vortex beam, is demonstrated using the spiral transformation. Such beams have a spiral intensity distribution and a phase discontinuity in the radial direction, which is completely different from an opening ring of the intensity pattern and an azimuthal phase jump, common features that all previously reported non-integer OAM modes (referred to as the conventional fractional vortex beams) shared. The intriguing properties of a spiral fractional vortex beam are studied both in simulations and experiments in this work. The results show that the spiral intensity distribution will evolve into a focusing annular pattern during its propagation in free space. Furthermore, we propose a novel scheme by superimposing a spiral phase piecewise function on spiral transformation to convert the radial phase jump to the azimuthal phase jump, revealing the connection between the spiral fractional vortex beam and its conventional counterpart, of which OAM modes both share the same non-integer order. Thus this work is expected to inspire opening more paths for leading fractional vortex beams to potential applications in optical information processing and particle manipulation.
Manipulating Orbital Angular Momenta of Photons by Transformation Media

Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:Scanning probes are being considered as the basis for a variety of emerging nanoscale applications including sample imaging and ultra-high-density probe storage. In this work, a controller for track-follow in archimedean spiral nanopositioning is presented. The proposed tracking controller is based on a Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) component and a tracking controller, extended with frequency-sliding peak filters in order to exploit the inherent properties of the spiral reference signal. Simulations show that the proposed architecture enables spiral scan operation with very low tracking error even at very high scan frequencies.

Abstract:basic research projects in the field of exfoliative cytology. This plan is now well under way and action has been initiated, directed to the foregoing nine objectives. This project represents an eclectic solution to the centralization problem of cytology laboratories. This is certainly a centralized laboratory, but one that is established under the guidance and control of a university pathology department, and with an intention of decentralizing by means of sections in the various hospitals. It has the advantages of processing enough smears to become a useful teaching and research centre, of maintaining through the co-operation of the pathologists, adequate clinical and histopathological control of individual cases, and of co-ordinating the cytodiagnostic work performed in the whole area. The importance of a cytology laboratory oriented toward teaching and research can hardly be overemphasized today, when the lack of trained cytopathologists and cytotechnologists is so acutely felt all over the country. Although this is possible only in a partially centralized laboratory, the proper conditions necessary for such centralization should be emphasized: the laboratory should preferably be established within a university department of pathology; it should concentrate on organizing, as early as possible, sections in the leading hospitals, a step towards decentralization; and it should be assured of proper clinical and histopathological control of the cases studied. Only under such conditions can a centralized cytology laboratory fulfil its purpose usefully and, by providing for earlier detection, play its proper role in the fight against cancer.

Abstract:Complementing the research of surface plasmon polariton vortices for Archimedean spiral structuresgrooved in gold platelets, we here study the analogous positive structure of an Archimedean spiralconsisting of bent gold nanorods. We consider spirals of two different sizes, for which we performnumerical calculations with the boundary element method. For a micrometer-sized metallic structurewe show that the scattered electric field forms a vortex in the centre of the spiral. When thespiral is illuminated by orbital angular momentum light, the topological charge of the vortex can becontrolled. For a nanometer-sized plasmonic Archimedean spiral we find that the response to opticalexcitation is governed by several resonances. When the nanostructure is excited by orbital angularmomentum light, different resonances appear compared to the excitation with plane waves. Abstract:In recent years, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light with a central phase singularity composed of a specific topological charge has attracted increasing attentions. In addition to the wide range of applications of OAM in optical manipulations and optical communications, the special angular spatial structure of OAM offers irreplaceable advantages for use in rotation measurement. Because of the relationship between OAM and angular position, the azimuthal information of optical fields can be acquired via detection of OAM. Several techniques based on this concept have been proposed to sense objects remotely using their angular motion. This article introduces the applications of OAM in object orientation recognition, rotation sensing, small angle measurement and rotating object imaging.

Abstract:In recent years, orbital angular momentum (OAM), as a new usable degree of freedom of photons, has been widely applied in both classical optics and quantum optics. For example, digital spiral imaging uses the OAM spectrum of the output beam from the object to restore the symmetry information of the object. However, the related experiments have been carried out in free space so far. Due to the poor anti-noise performance, limited transmission distance and other reasons, the practicability is seriously restricted. Here, we have carried out a digital spiral imaging experiment through a few-mode fiber, to achieve the identification of the symmetry of object by measuring the OAM spectrum of the output beam. In experiment, we have demonstrated the identification of the symmetry of amplitude-only and phase-only objects with the two-, three- and four-fold rotational symmetries. We also give the understanding of the physics. We believe that our work has greatly improved the practical application of digital spiral imaging in remote sensing.
Plasmonic Spiral Nanostructure for Analyzing the Angular Momentum of Light

Abstract:A compound plasmonic light analyzer with an elliptical Archimedean spiral nanostructure is proposed analytically and analyzed numerically. The elliptical Archimedean spiral is analogous to an ellipse but has varying semimajor axes. When the structure is illuminated by the incident light with different angular momentum, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited, and various plasmonic vortexes indicating the angular momentum of the light are generated. Incident light with different spin angular momentum can create plasmonic vortexes centered at different points, and the orbital angular momentum of light determines the size of the vortex, which manifests its topological charge. Thus, both spin and orbital angular momentum states of the incident light can be estimated simultaneously by observing the position and the size of the plasmonic vortex. We provide an analytical description of the structure and it is well consistent with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulation results. This plasmonic light analyzer may provide various potential applications in nanophotonics device and optical information technology.

Abstract:The recognition, decoding and tracking of vortex patterns is of increasing importance in many fields, ranging from the astronomical observations of distant galaxies to turbulence phenomena in liquids or gases. Currently, coherent light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) are of particular interest for optical communication, metrology, micro-machining or particle manipulation. One common task is to identify characteristic spiral patterns in pixelated intensity maps at real-world signal-to-noise ratios. A recently introduced combination of polar mapping and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was extended to novel sampling configurations and applied to the quantitative analysis of the spiral interference patterns of OAM beams. It is demonstrated that specific information on topological parameters in non-uniform arrays of OAM beams can be obtained from significantly distorted and noisy intensity maps by extracting one- or two-dimensional angular frequency spectra from single or concatenated circular cuts in either spatially fixed or scanning mode. The method also enables the evaluation of the quality of beam shaping and optical transmission. Results of proof-of-principle experiments are presented, resolution limits are discussed, and the potential for applications is addressed.

Abstract:Spiral arms have been observed in more than a dozen protoplanetary disks, yet the origin of nearly all systems is under debate. Multi-epoch monitoring of spiral arm morphology offers a dynamical way to distinguish two leading arm formation mechanisms: companion-driven and gravitational instability induction, since these mechanisms predict distinct motion patterns. By analyzing multi-epoch <i>J</i>-band observations of the SAO 206462 system using the SPHERE instrument on the Very Large Telescope in 2015 and 2016, we measure the pattern motion for its two prominent spiral arms in polarized light. On one hand, if both arms are comoving, they can be driven by a planet at au on a circular orbit, with gravitational instability motion ruled out. On the other hand, they can be driven by two planets at au and au, offering tentative evidence (3.0<i>σ</i>) that the two spirals are moving independently. The independent arm motion is possibly supported by our analysis of a re-reduction of archival observations using the NICMOS instrument on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in 1998 and 2005, yet artifacts including shadows can manifest spurious arm motion in HST observations. We expect future re-observations to better constrain the motion mechanism for the SAO 206462 spiral arms.

Abstract:We present a method to measure the high-order optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) with a variable cylindrical lens pair. The optical system consists of two cylindrical lenses with the opposite focal length. It produces a rotating position—spatial frequency transformation of phase modulation by changing the angle between the two cylindrical lenses. With this feature, the method can flexibly measure the OAM states of the vortex beams with different beam waists. The OAM states are determined by the number and direction of dark stripes of the diffraction pattern. The measurements of the topological charge and the radial index of Laguerre–Gaussian mode are demonstrated. As a compact high-order OAM measuring device, the variable cylindrical lens pair may find potential applications in optical communication.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a kind of controllable multi-spiral beam that can be generated using the modulated helico-conical phases with an axicon. The focal-field intensity distributions of the multi-spiral beams were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The relative distance between the two adjacent sub-beams of the multi-spiral beams was discussed based on the approximate mapping of the local spatial frequency. The result demonstrated that the relative distance between the two adjacent sub-beams was linearly dependent on the radial factor gradient Δα of the two sub-beams. When the radial factor gradient Δα is equal to a critical value (i.e., Δαc), the multi-spiral beam can be changed into an Archimedean spiral-shaped beam (the sub-beams of multi-spiral beams will be connected with each other). In addition, the dependence of the topological charge l on the critical radial factor gradient Δαc is also discussed. The result demonstrates that the critical radial factor gradient Δαc has a linear dependence on the topological charge l. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. The controllable multi-spiral beams are potentially applied in three-dimensional optical micro-manipulation and information transmission.

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight imaging can reconstruct objects hidden out of sight, which has drawn great attention in recent years. However, long data acquisition time is required since most of transient non-line-of-sight imaging need multi-point raster scanning of the visible wall. Here, we propose an Archimedean spiral scanning method based on confocal non-line-of-sight imaging, which greatly reduces the data acquisition time. Fewer scanning points are sufficient for imaging owing to accurate extraction of effective information. The Archimedean spiral scanning method is experimentally verified with published data and real scenes, then the curvature regularization algorithm is used to process data to achieve higher quality imaging. In the case of guaranteeing the imaging quality, the number of scanning points is reduced by an order of magnitude with the proposed method compared to traditional multi-point raster scanning method in this experiment. As a comparison, the imaging quality of Archimedean spiral scanning method is higher than those of the circular and confocal non-line-of-sight scanning methods at the same number of scanning points. This scanning method is expected to have a certain remarkable effect for real-time NLOS imaging.
