Abstract:Optical vortex beams (VBs), a structured light possessing helical phase—front and carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), have recently emerged as a promising perspective in optical manipulation, optical tweezer and optical communication. In this contribution, by taking advantage of the strong light–matter interaction, a nonlinear diffraction method is demonstrated to identify OAM modes. The nonlinear diffraction device (NDD) composed of WS2 nanosheets is employed to excite the optical Kerr nonlinear effect. Owing to the large Kerr coefficient of layered WS2, the spatial phase shift of VBs are readily regulated, resulting in controllable diffraction rings and tails, from which we can directly identify the magnitude and signs of OAM modes. The incident light intensity also expands the intensity distribution because the enhanced nonlinear phase shift will enlarge the diffraction rings, which provides an efficient way to identify the OAM and intensity of VBs simultaneously. It is anticipated that the optical nonlinearity might afford new opportunities for detecting structured lights and may have great potentials in designing all-optical OAM devices, etc.

Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:Optical singularity is pivotal in nature and has attracted wide interest from many disciplines nowadays, including optical communication, quantum optics, and biomedical imaging. Visualizing vortex lines formed by phase singularities and fabricating chiral nanostructures using the evolution of vortex lines are of great significance. In this paper, we introduce a promising method based on two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) to record the morphology of vortex lines generated by tightly focused multi-vortex beams (MVBs) at the nanoscale. Due to Gouy phase, the singularities of the MVBs rotate around the optical axis and move towards each other when approaching the focal plane. The propagation dynamics of vortex lines are recorded by 2PP-DLW, which explicitly exhibits the evolution of the phase singularities. Additionally, the MVBs are employed to fabricate stable three-dimensional chiral nanostructures due to the spiral-forward property of the vortex line. Because of the obvious chiral features of the manufactured nanostructures, a strong vortical dichroism is observed when excited by the light carrying orbital angular momentum. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures, such as optical sensing, chiral separation, and information storage.

Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.

Abstract:A new type of spatially structured light field carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode with any non-integer topological order, referred to as the spiral fractional vortex beam, is demonstrated using the spiral transformation. Such beams have a spiral intensity distribution and a phase discontinuity in the radial direction, which is completely different from an opening ring of the intensity pattern and an azimuthal phase jump, common features that all previously reported non-integer OAM modes (referred to as the conventional fractional vortex beams) shared. The intriguing properties of a spiral fractional vortex beam are studied both in simulations and experiments in this work. The results show that the spiral intensity distribution will evolve into a focusing annular pattern during its propagation in free space. Furthermore, we propose a novel scheme by superimposing a spiral phase piecewise function on spiral transformation to convert the radial phase jump to the azimuthal phase jump, revealing the connection between the spiral fractional vortex beam and its conventional counterpart, of which OAM modes both share the same non-integer order. Thus this work is expected to inspire opening more paths for leading fractional vortex beams to potential applications in optical information processing and particle manipulation.

Abstract:A spiral metalens is developed via special coordinate transformation metasurfaces to achieve single‐shot photon's orbital and spin angular momentum determination. Such a monolithic metalens allows for the identification of a maximum of 168 orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in the case of mode resolution 3 theoretically. By using spiral trajectories instead of circular trajectories, this method can resolve higher‐order OAM modes. Sorting orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum (SAM) of photons is crucial for optical communications, optical storage, and quantum information processing, wherein complicated optical setups or bulky devices are conventionally utilized to determine the angular momentum via repetitive interference or diffractive projection measurements. Recently, advancements in compact and single‐shot OAM detection have been made via coordinate transformation metasurfaces. Nevertheless, most of these strategies require precise separation and alignment between multiple components and cannot simultaneously distinguish full angular momentum states. Besides, the single‐shot maximum identifiable OAM mode numbers are generally limited to 60 due to the tradeoff between the mode space and reduced‐cross‐talk mode interval. Here, this work puts forward and experimentally demonstrates a monolithic spiral metalens (SML) for ultrahigh‐capacity sorting full angular momentum states. The SML focus the incident vortex beam into multiple‐turn spiral ring rather than a circle ring on the focal plane according to its topological charge, with the mode order ranging from −250 to 250. Consequently, the maximum identifiable OAM mode number is up to 168 under a single‐shot measurement, which largely surpass the best results reported hitherto. The experimental results obtained in the telecom band underpin the design approach, which may find great potential in high‐capacity communication and storage applications.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.
Compact sorting of optical vortices by means of diffractive transformation optics

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has recently attracted a growing interest as a new degree of freedom in order to increase the information capacity of today's optical networks, both for free-space and optical fiber transmission. Here we present our work of design, fabrication, and optical characterization of diffractive optical elements for compact OAM mode division demultiplexing based on optical transformations. Samples have been fabricated with 3D high-resolution electron beam lithography on a polymethylmethacrylate resist layer spun over a glass substrate. Their high compactness and efficiency make these optical devices promising for integration into next-generation platforms for OAM modes processing in telecom applications.

Abstract:Analogous to the regular lens, which spatially maps plane waves in the space domain to distinct points in the Fourier domain, the angular lens establishes the mapping relations between an angular mode and angular position, thus providing an effective toolkit for detecting an optical vortex. However, using the angular lens to sort infrared optical vortex modes via nonlinear optical processes remains relatively unexplored. Here, we design a nonlinear optical version of the angular lens to map the various infrared optical vortex modes to different angular positions in the visible region. We successfully sort nine infrared optical vortex modes of different topological charges with a visible camera, showing the cost-effective ability to sort infrared vortices compared to a relatively expensive infrared camera. Our scheme holds promise for infrared remote sensing, infrared vortex-encoded optical communications, and so on.
Effective Sorting of Fractional Optical Vortex Modes

Abstract:Mode sorter is the crucial component of the communication systems based on orbital angular momentum (OAM). However, schemes proposed so far can only effectively sort integer OAM (IOAM) modes. Here, we demonstrate the effective sorting of fractional OAM (FOAM) modes by utilizing the coordinate transformation method, which can convert FOAM modes to IOAM modes. The transformed IOAM modes are subsequently sorted by using a mode conversion method called topological charge matching. The validation of our scheme is verified by implementing two sorting processes and corresponding mode purity analyses, both theoretically and experimentally. This new sorting method exhibits a huge potential of implementing a highly confidential and high-capacity FOAM-based communication system, which may inspire further applications in both classical and quantum regimes.

Abstract:The potential of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) to create boundless dimensional Hilbert spaces has garnered considerable interest for augmenting the capacity of communication systems. Precise detection and reconfiguration of optical vortices (OVs) carrying distinct topological charges are crucial for leveraging their communicative potential. Here, based on transformation optics (TO), we theoretically propose a straightforward method for OV decomposition and reconfiguration. We first transform spiral vortices into planar waves with varying refraction angles and subsequently restore the vortices at designated image points with the aid of coherent perfect absorbers. Employing Hamiltonian optics, we analyze the trajectory of OV rays at both source and image positions, revealing an efficient reconfiguration of the OAM field that accounts for the phases of the sources. Our findings demonstrate flexible manipulation of OAM through TO, offering substantial advancements in communication technologies, including on-chip signal filtering and demultiplexing. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.054006 © 2024 American Physical Society

We demonstrate here a second-harmonic spiral transformation that enables infrared-visible detection of OAM states with a low energy loss. Remarkably, we predict and observe a record-high optical finesse, indicating improved separation efficiency enabled by this method.
Generalized angle-orbital-angular-momentum Talbot effect and modulo mode sorting

Abstract:The Talbot effect describes periodic revivals of field patterns and is ubiquitous across wave systems. In optics, it is mostly known for its manifestations in space and time, but is also observed in the wavevector and frequency spectra owing to the Fourier duality. Recently, the Talbot self-imaging has been shown separately in the azimuthal angle and orbital angular momentum (OAM) domains. Here, we unveil the missing link between them and demonstrate the generalized angle-OAM Talbot effect. Versatile transformations of petal fields and OAM spectra are experimentally showcased, based on the synergy of angular Talbot phase modulation and light propagation in a ring-core fiber. Moreover, the generalized self-imaging concept leads to new realizations in mode sorting, which separate OAM modes in a modulo manner, theoretically free from any crosstalk within the congruence classes of OAM modes. We design and experimentally construct various mode sorters with excellent performance, and show the unconventional behavior of Talbot-based sorters where neighboring OAM modes can be mapped to positions far apart. Besides its fundamental interest, our work finds applications in OAM-based information processing, and implies that the physical phenomena in time-frequency and angle-OAM domains are broadly connected as well as their processing techniques may be borrowed interchangeably.

Abstract:Controlling the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum, as well as the modulus and phase of the first-order correlation function of a vortex beam produced by a dynamic wander source, is critical for the use of OAM photons in turbulent environments. Based on a derived analytical formula for the first-order correlation function of the light field, a theoretical model and an experimental approach are proposed for synthesizing and detecting complex wander vortex beams in the laboratory. Wander perturbations and spiral phase offsets are considered. The correlation phase and OAM spectrum of complex wander vortex beams are measured with a single spatial light modulator (SLM). The experimental results agree with the theoretical simulations and show that, given a limited region of interest, wander perturbations broaden the OAM spectrum asymmetrically with respect to the initial input mode, with a higher proportion of lower ordered non-signal modes than higher ordered modes. For a large spiral phase offset, the main peak of the OAM spectrum shifts away from the signal mode and toward a lower ordered side mode. Generation and measurement strategies have significant potential for free-space communication and remote sensing in turbulent environments.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM), as an extra dimension of light, holds substantial potential in both classical and quantum optical communication systems. In such systems, the ability to arbitrarily convert the OAM of light is of great importance. In this work, we demonstrate an arbitrary rational number of multiplication and division of the OAM of light based on an Archimedean spiral mapping. Both the simulation and experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this scheme. This work provides a practical method to manipulate the OAM mode space of light that is directly applicable to high-dimensional optical communication systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a Perfect Optical Vortex (POV) sorter using a novel approach based on a binary Dammann Grating. POV beams, crucial for applications in communication and quantum systems, have traditionally posed challenges in sorting due to crosstalk and fabrication limitations. In this study, a hybrid lens system, combining a modified radial lens and a lateral lens, was proposed and optimized using parameters and to achieve precise separation between POV modes. The design was simulated, allowing for the customization of the lens based on beam size and system constraints. To further enhance sorting efficiency, a Dammann Grating was employed to encode the phase profile, facilitating easy fabrication and integration into existing optical setups. Simulations and experiments were conducted, demonstrating the system's ability to map each topological charge to a unique radial location with high efficiency. Results indicated minimal crosstalk when the separation between orders exceeded 3, showcasing the potential for this system to be utilized in communication platforms. This research introduces a scalable, efficient, and compact solution for demultiplexing POV beams, paving the way for their seamless integration into optical communication systems.

Abstract:We observe significant orbital angular momentum (OAM)helicity-dependent centroid shifts in the Fraunhofer patterns for the far-field diffraction of optical vortex beams passing through a thin single wire, thus suggesting the orbital Hall effect (OHE) of light in diffraction. Based on the OHE with a thin cross wire, we further experimentally develop a compact and robust alignment-free method to measure the OAM states of light. These findings indicate that not only does the OHE of light offer insights into vortex diffraction with broken rotational symmetry, it may also provide a reliable and efficient way to simplify the vortex measurement for waves of different natures.
