Abstract:Optical singularity is pivotal in nature and has attracted wide interest from many disciplines nowadays, including optical communication, quantum optics, and biomedical imaging. Visualizing vortex lines formed by phase singularities and fabricating chiral nanostructures using the evolution of vortex lines are of great significance. In this paper, we introduce a promising method based on two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) to record the morphology of vortex lines generated by tightly focused multi-vortex beams (MVBs) at the nanoscale. Due to Gouy phase, the singularities of the MVBs rotate around the optical axis and move towards each other when approaching the focal plane. The propagation dynamics of vortex lines are recorded by 2PP-DLW, which explicitly exhibits the evolution of the phase singularities. Additionally, the MVBs are employed to fabricate stable three-dimensional chiral nanostructures due to the spiral-forward property of the vortex line. Because of the obvious chiral features of the manufactured nanostructures, a strong vortical dichroism is observed when excited by the light carrying orbital angular momentum. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures, such as optical sensing, chiral separation, and information storage.

Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:Vortex beams can be used in optical communication, imaging, and processing applications. In this study, we generate a phased optical vortex array with high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) based on a phased Gaussian optical array and high-order phase multiplication. We then analyze the OAM mode distribution using the OAM spectrum expansion, and the number of high-order phase singularities in the array verified in interference experiments. Our results substantiate the feasibility of generating a high-order optical vortex array using this method. At the same time, because the phase Gaussian optics array that forms the phased optical vortex array is discrete and separable, we can use the phase Gaussian optics array with different phase differences to generate the phased optical vortex array with different phase gradients. The shape of the generated optical vortex array can be arranged along any curve. The phase singularity and OAM distributions at high orders are also detailedly analyzed. The ability to control the high-order OAM and phase structure has possible applications in particle manipulation and free-space optical communication.

Abstract:We propose an approach for creating optical vortex array (OVA) arranged along arbitrary curvilinear path. based on the coaxial interference of two width-controllable component curves calculated by modified holographic beam shaping technique. The two component curve beams have different radial dimensions as well as phase gradients along each beam such that the number of phase singularity in the curvilinear arranged optical vortex array (CA-OVA) is freely tunable on demand. Hybrid CA-OVA that comprises of multiple OVA structures along different respective curves is also discussed and demonstrated. Furthermore, we study the conversion of CA-OVA into vector mode that comprises of polarization vortex array With varied polarization state distribution. Both simulation and experimental results prove the performance of the proposed method of generating a complex structured Vortex array, which is of significance for potential applications including multiple trapping of micro-sized particles. Abstract:The potential of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) to create boundless dimensional Hilbert spaces has garnered considerable interest for augmenting the capacity of communication systems. Precise detection and reconfiguration of optical vortices (OVs) carrying distinct topological charges are crucial for leveraging their communicative potential. Here, based on transformation optics (TO), we theoretically propose a straightforward method for OV decomposition and reconfiguration. We first transform spiral vortices into planar waves with varying refraction angles and subsequently restore the vortices at designated image points with the aid of coherent perfect absorbers. Employing Hamiltonian optics, we analyze the trajectory of OV rays at both source and image positions, revealing an efficient reconfiguration of the OAM field that accounts for the phases of the sources. Our findings demonstrate flexible manipulation of OAM through TO, offering substantial advancements in communication technologies, including on-chip signal filtering and demultiplexing. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.054006 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Optical vortices are the light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), helical phase fronts and azimuthal component of the wave vector. The demand for miniaturization and scalability requires avoiding shortcomings of bulk optics via photonic integration. The integrated OAM emitters are designed to generate and manipulate OAM beams. Photonic integration is compatible with high purity of single mode emission and high efficiency, achieving controllable mode superposition and multiplexing. The potential applications in microscopy, micromanipulation, telecommunications and quantum information are presented and reviewed.

Abstract:Abstract Generally, an optical vortex lattice (OVL) is generated via the superposition of two specific vortex beams. Thus far, OVL has been successfully employed to trap atoms via the dark cores. The topological charge (TC) on each optical vortex (OV) in the lattice is only ±1. Consequently, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) on the lattice is ignored. To expand the potential applications, it is necessary to rediscover and exploit OAM. Here we propose a novel high-order OVL (HO-OVL) that combines the phase multiplication and the arbitrary mode-controllable techniques. TC on each OV in the lattice is up to 51, which generates sufficient OAM to manipulate microparticles. Thereafter, the entire lattice can be modulated to desirable arbitrary modes. Finally, yeast cells are trapped and rotated by the proposed HO-OVL. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first realization of the complex motion of microparticles via OVL. Thus, this work successfully exploits OAM on OVL, thereby revealing potential applications in particle manipulation and optical tweezers.

Abstract:A high-efficiency technique for optical vortex (OV) generation is proposed and demonstrated. The technique is based on liquid crystal fork gratings with space-variant azimuthal orientations, which are locally controlled via polarization-sensitive alignment layers. Thanks to the optical rewritability of the alignment agent and the dynamic image generation of the digital micro-mirror device, fork gratings can be instantly and arbitrarily reconfigured. Corresponding optical vortices carrying arbitrary azimuthal and radial indices are demonstrated with a conversion efficiency of 98.5%, exhibiting features of polarization control and electrical switching. The technique may pave a bright road toward OV generation, manipulation, and detection. (C) 2015 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The ultrashort orbital angular momentum pulses, or the ultrashort optical vortex pulses, with the properties of the ultrashort duration and broadband spectrum, open significant applications in various contexts. The controllability of the orbital angular momentum in ultrashort vortex pulses crucially affects its capabilities. We put forward an approach for orbital angular momentum mode selection in an ultrashort laser pulse. This approach depends on an optical mask with multiple spirals rotationally and symmetrically arranged in a model of the spiral array. Both theoretical analyses and experimental work in the context of ultrashort vortex pulses demonstrate that the spiral array enables flexible generation of the structured orbital angular momentum modes. This optical mask shows the advantages of damage resistance, without medium-dispersion, and ease of handling in an ultrafast optical field. Furthermore, the spiral array can be applied to analyzing and generating other matter vortex beams within an axially scalar system.

Abstract:Combined the optical vortex with computer generated holography, an approach for producing optical vortex array with high quality was proposed. The formation and distribution characteristics of optical vortex array were theoretically discussed, and optical vortex array was produced by numerical simulation. The hologram of optical vortex array was generated by conjugate symmetric extension Fourier computer generated holography. Based on spatial light modulator loaded with holograms, the optical vortex arrays were reconstructed in the experiment. In order to evaluate the generated beams, Mach - Zehnder interference system was adopted. It is very simple and easy to produce the optical vortex array, which provides more complicated light distributions and controllable parameters. The research results may have a potential value in optical micromanipulation, optical communication and other fields.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM), as an extra dimension of light, holds substantial potential in both classical and quantum optical communication systems. In such systems, the ability to arbitrarily convert the OAM of light is of great importance. In this work, we demonstrate an arbitrary rational number of multiplication and division of the OAM of light based on an Archimedean spiral mapping. Both the simulation and experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this scheme. This work provides a practical method to manipulate the OAM mode space of light that is directly applicable to high-dimensional optical communication systems.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.

Abstract:Optical vortex beams, with phase singularity characterized by a topological charge (TC), introduces a new dimension for optical communication, quantum information, and optical light manipulation. However, the evaluation of TCs after beam propagation remains a substantial challenge, impeding practical applications. Here, we introduce vortices in lateral arrays (VOILA), a novel spatial multiplexing approach that enables simultaneous transmission of a lateral array of multiple vortices. Leveraging advanced learning techniques, VOILA effectively decodes TCs, even in the presence of strong optical nonlinearities simulated experimentally. Notably, our approach achieves substantial improvements in single-shot bandwidth, surpassing single-vortex scheme by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, our system exhibits precise fractional TC recognition in both linear and nonlinear regimes, providing possibilities for high-bandwidth communication. The capabilities of VOILA promise transformative contributions to optical information processing and structured light research, with significant potential for advancements in diverse fields.

Abstract:Recently, the optical vortex (OV) has gained increasing interest since the potential for applications of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by optical vortex beams. However, generation is currently limited single static cricular intensity profile, greatly constraining the breadth of achievable spatiotemporal dynamics. Here, we propose a novel phase distribution to generate a dynamic propagation OV with a customized topological charge (TC ≥ 10) based on Fibonacci series annular subzone by tailoring the local phase gradient along the azimuthal direction. We describe the generation of the Fibonacci series annular subzone vortex phase. The Fibonacci vortex beam (FVB) have customization TC, multi-singularity intensity distributions. Furthermore, such optical fields exhibit the spatial dynamic rotation and self-focusing have yielded fascinating phenomena. The simulation results are agreed with the experimental results, which provides an important basis for the generation of OV with spatial dynamic propagation. These results contribute to the advanced complex light manipulation with spatial dynamic propagation and pave the way to achieve a new laser with the structured light based on modified phase control.

Abstract:A lens-less method for generating vortex arrays with tunable parameters is proposed based on quasi-Talbot effects. By illuminating a two-dimensional periodic sinusoidal grating with a vortex beam carrying a fourth-order cross-phase, the continuous vortex array structure can be generated in the Fresnel diffraction region. Due to the shaping effect of the fourth-order cross-phase on the vortex beam, by changing the constant parameter of the fourth-order cross-phase, it is possible to shape the generation of optical vortex arrays at different positions. This will somewhat broaden the flexibility of the lens-free optical vortex array in terms of generation position. In addition, the generation of polygonal optical vortex arrays is achieved by higher-order cross-phases of different orders. This technique has potential applications in various fields such as optical tweezers, multi-particle screening, microscopic manipulation, etc.

Abstract:The perfect optical vortex has successfully aroused substantial interest from researchers for its central dark hollow caused by spatial phase singularity in recent years. However, the traditional methods of combining the axicon and helical phase to generate the perfect optical vortex lead to an additional focus deviation in the tightly focused systems. Here, we report a multi-foci integration (MFI) method to produce the perfect optical vortex by accumulating a finite number of foci in the focal plane to overcome the additional focus deviation. Furthermore, based on MFI, we superposed two perfect optical vortices to obtain the spot array with controllable phase distribution and the number of spots. This work deepens our knowledge about superposed vortices and facilitates new potential applications. The micromanipulated experimental results agree well with our theoretical simulation. The spot array field provides new opportunities in direct laser writing, optical tweezers, optical communications, and optical storage.

Abstract:Controlling the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum, as well as the modulus and phase of the first-order correlation function of a vortex beam produced by a dynamic wander source, is critical for the use of OAM photons in turbulent environments. Based on a derived analytical formula for the first-order correlation function of the light field, a theoretical model and an experimental approach are proposed for synthesizing and detecting complex wander vortex beams in the laboratory. Wander perturbations and spiral phase offsets are considered. The correlation phase and OAM spectrum of complex wander vortex beams are measured with a single spatial light modulator (SLM). The experimental results agree with the theoretical simulations and show that, given a limited region of interest, wander perturbations broaden the OAM spectrum asymmetrically with respect to the initial input mode, with a higher proportion of lower ordered non-signal modes than higher ordered modes. For a large spiral phase offset, the main peak of the OAM spectrum shifts away from the signal mode and toward a lower ordered side mode. Generation and measurement strategies have significant potential for free-space communication and remote sensing in turbulent environments.
