Abstract:This research aims to use an innovative thought and methodology to improve the teaching of college physics experiment.The detailed idea and methodology were introduced by a Planck Constant experiment based on Photoelectric Effect Theorem.In this experiment, a high precision measurement of Planck Constant was achieved by a self -made newly invented device.This device is self-developed with an open structure providing hands on measurement, which enables to conduct comparative trials with contrast tests.This new experimental design could inspire the students and help them develop creativity.

Abstract:The efficiency and lumen output of light source for illumination system were analyzed based on Etendue, this analytical approach can predict light source collection efficiency. A new method for measuring the output intensity distribution of light source with elliptical reflector was put forward; the collection efficiency vs. Etendue curve was estimated with this technique. The Etendue was changed by moving the mobile aperture gradually and the intensity distributions were recorded by CCD camera in this measurement method. The method is very convenient and the experimental result matches well with the theoretical model.

Abstract:The current-voltage characteristic of light emitting diode(LED) is measured to determine the forward threshold voltage.The electroluminescence characteristic of LED is measured with multichannel spectrometer.The forward threshold voltage corresponding to the peak wavelength of electroluminescence of the LED is given.Thus,the Planck constant can be determined.The experiment results of blue,red and green LEDs show that the theoretical value of Planck constant lays in the confidence interval of the experiment data.

Abstract:To eliminate the last artefact unit, kilogram, in the seven basic SI units, the possible new definition of kilogram by fixing the Planck constant is being considered. National Metrology Institutes, the BIPM and academic institutions have built several electromechanical balances such as watt balance to measure the Planck constant by an equivalence of mechanical and electrical energies. This paper reviewed the principle, apparatus and recent progress of different electromechanical balances. The tendency for measuring the Planck constant and the future of kilogram have also been predicted.

Abstract:In this study we present photoemission data for three different types of amorphous carbon modifications (a-C:H, ta-C:H, and ta-C) that owe their properties to their different preparations by radio frequency plasma, plasma beam, or are discharge. Their properties are investigated by me;ms of their characteristic plasmon loss following the C 1s core level, the core-level shape itself, and by their valence bands. For all three amorphous modifications as well as for the two crystalline ones, diamond and graphite, we present density of states calculations which in the amorphous case are based on molecular-dynamics simulations. The electronic density of states is fitted to the data using photoemission cross sections and a model for the lifetime broadening. The agreement achieved is very good and confirms the validity of the predicted structures that do not possess any significant larger pi clusters.

Abstract:A precise instrument, called a watt balance, compares mechanical power measured in terms of the meter, the second, and the kilogram to electrical power measured in terms of the volt and the ohm. A direct link between mechanical action and the Planck constant is established by the practical realization of the electrical units derived from the Josephson and the quantum Hall effects. We describe in this paper the fourth-generation watt balance at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and report our initial determination of the Planck constant obtained from data taken in late 2015 and the beginning of 2016. A comprehensive analysis of the data and the associated uncertainties led to the SI value of the Planck constant, h = 6.626 069 83(22) × 10−34 J s. The relative standard uncertainty associated with this result is 34 × 10−9.

Abstract:Franck-Hertz experiment has witnessed that the energy exchanged in the process of the collision of electrons and mercury atoms is a fixed value. Meanwhile, this experiment also firstly proves the existence of stationary state level in Bohr's Theory of hydrogen atoms. This article mainly quantitatively analyses the formation cause of the curve shape in Franck-Hertz experiment based on the assumption of classical physics, and give a good physical image and explanation. At the same time it also proves that the rational use of the classical hypothesis can explain part of the quantum problems.

Abstract:The Planck constant h is one of the most significant constants in quantum physics.Recently,the precision measurement of the value of h has been a hot issue due to its important role for the establishment of both a new SI and a revised fundamental physical constant system.Up to date,two approaches,the watt balance and counting atoms,have been employed to determine the Planck constant at a level of several parts in 108.In this paper,the principle and progress on precision measurement of the Planck constant using watt balance and counting atoms at national metrology institutes are reviewed.Further improvement in determining the Planck constant and possible developments of a revised physical constant system in future are discussed.

Abstract:An experiment is proposed to precisely measure the Planck constant. In this experiment, the Planck constant is measured based on the inertial mass measurement rather than the gravitational mass determinations in some other well-known experiments, e.g., the Kibble balance and counting atoms. We link the mechanical force to a quantum-traceable electrostatic force by a beam balance oscillator. After a 5-year continuous effort, the principle of the proposal is verified by a preliminary measurement with a relative uncertainty of 5.4 x 10(-5). The proposal has the potential to achieve much higher measurement accuracy with further improvements.

Abstract:This study identifies a previously overlooked peculiarity resulted by the relativistic Doppler effect, suggesting a possible violation of photon energy conservation by a thought experiment. To resolve this, a revised theory is proposed relying on considering fixed intrinsic properties for photons in their rest frame, called the Light Intrinsic Frame of Reference (LIFOR). This theory preserves the constancy of light speed, is fully consistent with special relativity, and explains frequency shifts through Lorentz transformations, leading to a relativistic justification for Planck’s quantization of radiation energy.

Abstract:Measurements of the photoelectron spectrum at White Sands Missile Range in June 1965 are reported and compared with theory. The agreement is satisfactory and shows that a realistic treatment of photoelectrons, at least at low altitudes, is feasible with current information on atmospheric structure, solar fluxes, and cross sections. The theoretical model is also compared with measurements by Hinteregger in August 1959. Theory and experiment agree satisfactorily in this case also if one assumes a solar cycle variation of extreme ultraviolet solar radiation comparable with that observed for the 10-cm radio flux.
Density functional theory and non-relativistic photoelectric effects in the few-electron atomic systems

Abstract:Closed analytical formulas are derived for the differential and total cross sections of the non-relativistic photoelectric effect in the three main classes of few-electron atomic systems: (1) neutral atoms and positively charged atomic ions which contain more than one bound electron, (2) negatively charged atomic ions, and (3) one-electron atoms and ions. Our procedure developed in this study is a combination of QED methods and results of the density functional theory obtained for atoms and ions. In all these systems the photoelectric effect is considered as photodetachment of the outer-most electron and our analysis is based on the results of density functional theory obtained for the electron density (radial) distribution in these atomic systems. Analytical formulas (similar to ours) for the differential and total cross sections of photoelectric effect for atomic systems from classes (1) and (2) have never been produced in earlier studies.

Abstract:We have developed a curriculum on the photoelectric effect including an interactive computer simulation, interactive lectures with peer instruction, and conceptual and mathematical homework problems. Our curriculum addresses established student difficulties and is designed so that students will be able to (1) correctly predict the results of experiments on the photoelectric effect and (2) describe how these results lead to the photon model of light. Our instruction leads to better student mastery of the first goal than either traditional instruction or previous reformed instruction, with approximately 85% of students correctly predicting the results of changes to the experimental conditions. Most students are able to correctly state the observations made in the photoelectric effect experiment and the inferences that can be made from these observations, but are less successful drawing a clear logical connection between the observations and the inferences.

Abstract:The universal formulae for lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) and lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(p) of insulator having less impurities are experimentally proved, where lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) is the mean escape depth at Kelvin temperature T of secondary electrons emitted from insulators with band gap E-g and efficient electron affinity areal, lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(p) is the lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) due to electron-lattice interaction. Based on the mechanism of electron-insulator interaction, experimental data, existing formulae, ESTAR program and formulae for lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) and lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(p) of insulator having less impurities, the methods of obtaining lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-)(e), lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-)(defect) and lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(i) are presented, where lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-)(e) is the lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) due to electron-electron interaction, lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-defect) is the lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) due to electron-defect interaction, lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(i) is the lambda(chi(real), E-g, T) due to electron-impurity interaction. The lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(p), lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-)(e), lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(e-defect) and lambda(chi(real), E-g, T)(i) can provide corresponding information regarding electron-insulator interaction. Thus, it can be concluded that the method of investigating electroninsulator interaction by secondary electron emission SEE is successfully presented in this work. According to experimental data, formula for lambda(chi(real), E-g, T), ESTAR program, calculated parameters of primary range and existing formulae for SEE, the method of calculating the delta at different T and in the range of 1.0 keV <= E-po <= 100.0 keV from insulator having less impurities is successfully presented, where delta is secondary electron yield, E-po is incident energy of primary electron.

Abstract:Classical radiation from a single relativistically accelerating electron is investigated where the temperature characterizing the system highlights the dependence on acceleration. In the context of the dynamic Casimir effect with Planck-distributed photons and thermal black hole evaporation, we demonstrate analytic consistency between the ideas of constant acceleration and equilibrium thermal radiation. For ultra-relativistic speeds, we demonstrate a long-lasting constant peel acceleration and constant power emission, which is consistent with the idea of balanced equilibrium of Planck-distributed particle radiation.

Abstract:Ives-Stilwell experiment in 1938 was a historic experiment for confirming Einstein's special relativity, and various modern types have been repeated by use of laser technology. In this paper, we reveal and solve a long-lasting unrecognized fundamental issue that the data analysis for all those experiments was not consistent with Einstein's definition of the relativistic Doppler effect so that the Doppler effect was not actually confirmed. Based on existing data, we propose a justified data analysis and correctly confirm the Doppler effect in the Ives-Stilwell-type experiment, thus resulting in a great advance in the experimental verification of Lorentz invariance via the Doppler effect.
