Abstract:We generalize the Einstein photoelectric equation for the case that the matter is irradiated by the polychromatic light of blackbody, or, by the synchrotron radiation. The work function of the collective motion of photoelectrons is discussed.

Abstract:On the basis of comparing Maxwell equation for a light wave to Schrodinger equation for a photon, we conclude that the former solution that must be a real function is the real part of the latter solution that must be a complex function. Using the state-vector function that is the general solution of Schrodinger equation for a photon, we solve some true but strange optical problems including the simple demonstration of Malus's Law and the orthogonal decomposition of a natural light.
The evolution of radiation towards thermal equilibrium: A soluble model which illustrates the foundations of Statistical Mechanics

Abstract:In 1916 Einstein introduced the first rules for a quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation, and he applied them to a model of matter in thermal equilibrium with radiation to derive Planck's black-body formula. Einstein's treatment is extended here to time-dependent stochastic variables, which leads to a master equation for the probability distribution that describes the irreversible approach of Einstein's model towards thermal equilibrium, and elucidates aspects of the foundation of statistical mechanics. An analytic solution of this equation is obtained in the Fokker-Planck approximation which is in excellent agreement with numerical results. At equilibrium, it is shown that the probability distribution is proportional to the total number of microstates for a given configuration, in accordance with Boltzmann's fundamental postulate of equal a priori probabilities for these states. While the counting of these configurations depends on particle statistics- Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, or Fermi-Dirac - the corresponding probability is determined here by the dynamics which are embodied in the form of Einstein's quantum transition probabilities for the emission and absorption of radiation. In a special limit, it is shown that the photons in Einstein's model can act as a thermal bath for the evolution of the atoms towards the canonical equilibrium distribution of Gibbs. In this limit, the present model is mathematically equivalent to an extended version of the Ehrenfests' ``dog-flea'' model, which has been discussed recently by Ambegaokar and Clerk.

Abstract:The control of thermal radiation by means of micro-structured materials is an active area of research with applications such as thermophotovoltaics and radiative cooling. The original theories of thermal radiation were derived for electromagnetically large objects, and predict unpolarized, omnidirectional, and uncorrelated radiation. Microstructures, however, exhibit thermal emissions that can be polarized, highly directional, and spatially and temporally correlated. The original theories are also restricted to thermal equilibrium situations and do not apply to steady-state emissions of electromagnetically small objects under a stationary illumination. In here, we establish a polychromatic framework to predict thermal radiation in the stationary regime, which includes thermal equilibrium. After identifying an object--adapted set of independent polychromatic absorption modes, we assume that the emission also occurs independently through the outgoing versions of each polychromatic mode. Energy conservation leads then to a Kirchhoff-like law for each polychromatic mode. The salient properties of the polychromatic theory are: Emission in frequencies that are absent in the illumination, change in the number of photons, and applicability to both thermal radiation and luminescence upon illumination with a continuous wave laser, as long as the emitted power depends linearly on the input intensity. These properties are independent of the chosen set of polychromatic modes. In this work, we chose the absorption modes derived from the scattering operator of a given object, and use the T-matrix formalism for computations, which applies to general objects, including microscopic ones. Some counter-intuitive results motivate the future search for a different set of modes.

Abstract:The T-matrix is a powerful tool that provides the complete description of the linear interaction between the electromagnetic field and a given object. In here, we generalize the usual monochromatic formalism to the case of polychromatic field-matter interaction. The group of transformations of special relativity provides the guidance for building the new formalism, which is inherently polychromatic. The polychromatic T-matrix affords the direct treatment of the interaction of electromagnetic pulses with objects, even when the objects move at constant relativistic speeds.

Abstract:The two opposite concepts - multiphoton and effective photon - readily describing the photoelectric effect under strong irradiation in the case that the energy of the incident light is essentially smaller than the ionisation potential of gas atoms and the work function of the metal are treated. Based on the submicroscopic construction of quantum mechanics developed in the previous papers by the author [Phys. Essays vol. 6, 554 (1993); vol. 10, 407 (1997)] the analysis of the reasons of the two concepts discrepancies is led. Taking into account the main hypothesis of those works, i.e., that the electron is an extended object that is not point-like, the study of the interaction between the electron and a photon flux is carried out in detail. A comparison with numerous experiments is performed.

Abstract:A Schrödinger type equation for a mathematical probability amplitude {\psi}(x,t), is derived from the generalized phase space Liouville equation valid for the motion of a microscopic particle, with mass M, moving in a potential V(x). The particle phase space probability density is denoted W(x,p,t) and the entire system is immersed in the "vacuum" zero-point electromagnetic radiation . We show that the generalized Liouville equation is reduced to a non-quantized Liouville equation in the equilibrium limit where the small radiative corrections cancel each other approximately. Our derivation will be based on a simple Fourier transform of the non-quantized phase space probability distribution W(x,p,t). For convenience, we introduce in this Fourier transform an auxiliary constant {\alpha}, with dimension of action, and an auxiliary coordinate denoted by y. We shall prove that {\alpha} is equal to the Planck's constant present in the momentum operator of the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we shall show that this momentum operator is deeply related with the ubiquitous zero-point electromagnetic radiation. It is also important to say that we do not assume that the mathematical amplitude {\psi}(x,t) is a de Broglie matter-wave, in other words, the wave-particle duality hypothesis is not used within our work. The implications of our study for the standard interpretation of the photoelectric effect is discussed by considering the main characteristics of the phenomenon. We also mention, briefly, the effects of the zero-point radiation in the tunnelling phenomenon and in the Compton's effect.

Generalization of Kirchhoff's Law of Thermal Radiation: The Inherent Relations Between Quantum Efficiency and Emissivity

Abstract:Planck's law of thermal radiation depends on the temperature, $T$, and the emissivity, $\epsilon$, of a body, where emissivity is the coupling of heat to radiation that depends on both phonon-electron nonradiative interactions and electron-photon radiative interactions. Another property of a body is absorptivity, $\alpha$, which only depends on the electron-photon radiative interactions. At thermodynamic equilibrium, nonradiative interactions are balanced, resulting in Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation that equals these two properties, i.e., $\epsilon = \alpha$. For non-equilibrium, quantum efficiency ($QE$) describes the statistics of photon emission, which like emissivity depends on both radiative and nonradiative interactions. Past generalized Planck's equation extends Kirchhoff's law out of equilibrium by scaling the emissivity with the pump-dependent chemical-potential $\mu$, obscuring the relations between the body properties. Here we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a prime equation relating these properties in the form of $\epsilon = \alpha(1-QE)$, which is in agreement with a recent universal modal radiation law for all thermal emitters. At equilibrium, these relations are reduced to Kirchhoff's law. Our work lays out the fundamental evolution of non-thermal emission with temperature, which is critical for the development of lighting and energy devices.

Thermodynamics of blackbody radiation in nonlinear electrodynamics

Abstract:We study the blackbody properties and the thermodynamic equilibrium quantities of a photon gas in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics. In this vein, we take into account the photon propagation in a uniform external magnetic field in the weak field approximation, where an angular anisotropic energy density distribution appears in the frequency spectrum. The particular case when the photon propagates perpendicular to the background magnetic field is also discussed, which allows us to probe the strong field regime. We then derive a modified blackbody spectral distribution and the Stefan-Boltzmann law in this situation. Considerations about Wien's displacement law and the Rayleigh-Jeans formula are contemplated as well. Deviations from the thermodynamic quantities at thermal equilibrium such as energy, pressure, entropy, and heat capacity densities are obtained from the Helmholtz free energy. As an application, we study three nonlinear electrodynamics, namely, the Euler-Heisenberg, the generalized Born-Infeld, and the logarithmic electrodynamics. Possible implications on stellar systems with strong magnetic fields such as magnetars are discussed.

Abstract:We derive the differential probability of the photoelectric effect realized at the very low temperature of double graphene in the very strong magnetic field. The relation of this effect to the elementary particle physics, nuclear physics and Einstein gravity is mentioned. Our approach is the analogue of the Landau discovery of the diamagnetism, where Landau supposed the parabolic dispersion relations for the model of diamagnetism.

Abstract:In this work, we derive two formulas encoding the polarization direction and luminosity of synchrotron radiations from the moving electrons in curved spacetime under the geometric optics approximation. As an application, we further study the polarized images of synchrotron radiations from electron sources in Schwarzschild black hole spacetime with a vertical and uniform magnetic field. In particular, by focusing on the circular orbits of electrons on the equatorial plane, we show the polarized images of the synchrotron radiations from these orbits for different observational angles and discuss the variations of the polarization directions concerning the angles.

Abstract:In this paper, I introduce two new concepts (Minkowski quasi-photon and invariance of physical definitions) to elucidate the theory developed in my previous work [Can. J. Phys. 93 (2015) 1510], and to clarify the criticisms by Partanen and coworkers [Phys. Rev. A 95 (2017) 063850]. Minkowski quasi-photon is the carrier of the momentum and energy of light in a medium under the sense of macroscopic averages of light-matter microscopic interactions. I firmly argue that required by the principle of relativity, the definitions of all physical quantities are invariant. I shed a new light on the significance of the symmetry of physical laws for resolution of the Abraham–Minkowski debate on the momentum of light in a medium. I illustrate by relativistic analysis why the momentums and energies of the electromagnetic subsystem and the material subsystem form Lorentz four-vectors separately for a closed system of light-matter interactions, and why the momentum and energy of a non-radiation field are owned by the material subsystem, and they are not measurable experimentally. Finally, I also provide an elegant proof for the invariance of physical definitions, and a clear definition of the Lorentz covariance for general physical quantities and tensors.

Generalized Einstein Relations between Absorption and Emission Spectra at Thermodynamic Equilibrium

Abstract:We present Einstein coefficient spectra and a detailed-balance derivation of generalized Einstein relations between them that is based on the connection between spontaneous and stimulated emission. If two broadened levels or bands overlap in energy, transitions between them need not be purely absorptive or emissive. Consequently, spontaneous emission can occur in both transition directions, and four Einstein coefficient spectra replace the three Einstein coefficients for a line. At equilibrium, the four different spectra obey five pairwise relationships and one lineshape generates all four. These relationships are independent of molecular quantum statistics and predict the Stokes' shift between forward and reverse transitions required by equilibrium with blackbody radiation. For Boltzmann statistics, the relative strengths of forward and reverse transitions depend on the formal chemical potential difference between the initial and final bands, which becomes the standard chemical potential difference for ideal solutes. The formal chemical potential of a band replaces both the energy and degeneracy of a quantum level. Like the energies of quantum levels, the formal chemical potentials of bands obey the Rydberg-Ritz combination principle. Each stimulated Einstein coefficient spectrum gives a frequency-dependent transition cross section. Transition cross sections obey causality and a detailed-balance condition with spontaneous emission, but do not directly obey generalized Einstein relations. Even with an energetic width much less than the photon energy, an absorptive forward transition with an energetic width much greater than the thermal energy can have such an extreme Stokes' shift that its reverse transition cross section becomes predominantly absorptive rather than emissive.

A pedestrian approach to Einstein's formula $E=mc^2$ with an application to photon dynamics

Abstract:There are several ways to derive Einstein's celebrated formula for the energy of a massive particle at rest, $E=mc^2$. Noether's theorem applied to the relativistic Lagrange function provides an unambiguous and straightforward access to energy and momentum conservation laws but those tools were not available at the beginning of the twentieth century and are not at hand for newcomers even nowadays. In a pedestrian approach, we start from relativistic kinematics and analyze elastic and inelastic scattering processes in different reference frames to derive the relativistic energy-mass relation. We extend the analysis to Compton scattering between a massive particle and a photon, and a massive particle emitting two photons. Using the Doppler formula, it follows that $E=\hbar \omega$ for photons at angular frequency $\omega$ where $\hbar$ is the reduced Planck constant. We relate our work to other derivations of Einstein's formula in the literature.

Abstract:Photoelectron spectroscopy, especially at pulsed sources, is ultimately limited by the Coulomb interaction in the electron cloud, changing energy and angular distribution of the photoelectrons. A detailed understanding of this phenomenon is crucial for future pump–probe photoemission studies at (x-ray) free electron lasers and high-harmonic photon sources. Measurements have been performed for Ir(111) at hν = 1000 eV with photon flux densities between ∼102 and 104 photons per pulse and μm2 (beamline P04/PETRA III, DESY Hamburg), revealing space-charge induced energy shifts of up to 10 eV. In order to correct the essential part of the energy shift and restore the electron distributions close to the Fermi energy, we developed a semi-analytical theory for the space-charge effect in cathode-lens instruments (momentum microscopes, photoemission electron microscopes). The theory predicts a Lorentzian profile of energy isosurfaces and allows us to quantify the charge cloud from measured energy profiles. The correction is essential for the determination of the Fermi surface, as we demonstrate by means of ‘k-space movies’ for the prototypical high-Z material tungsten. In an energy interval of about 1 eV below the Fermi edge, the bandstructure can be restored up to substantial shifts of ∼7 eV. Scattered photoelectrons strongly enhance the inelastic background in the region several eV below EF, proving that the majority of scattering events involves a slow electron. The correction yields a gain of two orders of magnitude in usable intensity compared with the uncorrected case (assuming a tolerable shift of 250 meV). The results are particularly important for future experiments at SASE-type free electron lasers, since the correction also works for strongly fluctuating (but known) pulse intensities.

Abstract:We demonstrate that strong-field ionization of atoms driven by circularly polarized light becomes an adiabatic process when described in the frame rotating with the laser field. As a direct consequence, a conservation law emerges: in the rotating frame the energy of the tunneling electron is conserved for rotationally invariant potentials. This conservation law, arising from a classical picture, is retrieved through a proper classical-quantum correspondence when considering the full quantum system, beyond the Strong Field Approximation.

Abstract:We implement a longstanding proposal by Weisskopf to apply virtual polarization corrections to the in/out external fields in study of the Euler-Heisenberg-Schwinger effective action. Our approach requires distinguishing the electromagnetic and polarization fields based on mathematical tools developed by Białynicki-Birula, originally for the Born-Infeld action. Our solution is expressed as a differential equation where the one-loop effective action serves as input. As a first result of our approach, we recover the higher-order one-cut reducible loop diagrams discovered by Gies and Karbstein.

Abstract:We show that the probability distribution p(m, T) of registering m photoelectrons can be explained in Thermo Field Dynamics theory as a matrix element of thermo entangling operator e(1-xi) a(dagger) (a) over tilde (dagger) between = vertical bar m > vertical bar (m) over tilde > where vertical bar(m) over tilde > is a fictitious Fock state. Based on this, the new integration formula for calculating p(m, T), which involves both Laguerre polynomial and the characteristic function chi(eta) of rho, is obtained. This provides us with convenience for evaluating photoelectric counting probability for various optical fields.
Monochromatization of Electron Beams with Spatially and Temporally Modulated Optical Fields

Abstract:Inelastic interaction between coherent light with constant frequency and free electrons enables periodic phase modulation of electron wave packets leading to periodic side-bands in the electron energy spectra. In this Letter we propose a generalization of the interaction by considering linearly chirped electron wave packets interacting with chirped optical fields. We theoretically demonstrate that when matching the chirp parameters of the electron and light waves, the interaction leads to partial monochromatization of the electron spectra in one of the energy side-bands. Depending on the coherence time of the electrons, the electron spectrum may be narrowed down by a factor of 5-times with 26% of the electron distribution in the monochromatized energy band. This approach will improve the spectral resolution and reduce color aberrations in ultrafast imaging experiments with free electrons.
