Abstract:We present a new random approximation method that yields the existence of a discrete Beurling prime system which is very close in a certain precise sense to a given non-decreasing, right-continuous, nonnegative, and unbounded function F . This discretization procedure improves an earlier discrete random approximation method due to Diamond et al. (Math Ann 334:1–36, 2006), and refined by Zhang (Math Ann 337:671–704, 2007). We obtain several applications. Our new method is applied to a question posed by Balazard concerning Dirichlet series with a unique zero in their half plane of convergence, to construct examples of very well-behaved generalized number systems that solve a recent open question raised by Hilberdink and Neamah (Int J Number Theory 16(05):1005–1011, 2020), and to improve the main result from (Adv Math 370:Article 107240, 2020), where a Beurling prime system with regular primes but extremely irregular integers was constructed.

Abstract:We show the zero-density estimate \[ N(\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}; \alpha, T) \ll T^{\frac{4(1-\alpha)}{3-2\alpha-\theta}}(\log T)^{9} \] for Beurling zeta functions $\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}$ attached to Beurling generalized number systems with integers distributed as $N_{\mathcal{P}}(x) = Ax + O(x^{\theta})$. We also show a similar zero-density estimate for a broader class of general Dirichlet series, consider improvements conditional on finer pointwise or $L^{2k}$-bounds of $\zeta_{\mathcal{P}}$, and discuss some optimality questions.

Abstract:Let $\displaystyle \sum_{i=a}^b \frac{1}{i} = \frac{u_{a,b}}{v_{a,b}}$ with $u_{a,b}$ and $v_{a,b}$ coprime. Erdős and Graham asked the following: Does there, for every fixed $a$, exist a $b$ such that $v_{a,b} < v_{a,b-1}$? If so, what is the least such $b = b(a)$? In this paper we will investigate these problems in a more general setting, answer the first question in the affirmative and obtain the bounds $a + 0.54\log(a) < b(a) \le 4.374(a-1)$, which hold for all large enough $a$.

Abstract:In this paper, the approximation of analytic functions by shifts ζP(s+iτ) of Beurling zeta-functions ζP(s) of certain systems P of generalized prime numbers is discussed. It is required that the system of generalized integers NP generated by P satisfies ∑m⩽x,m∈N1=ax+O(xδ), a>0, 0⩽δ<1, and the function ζP(s) in some strip lying in σ^<σ δ, which has a bounded mean square. Proofs are based on the convergence of probability measures in some spaces.

Some examples of well-behaved Beurling number systems

Abstract:We investigate the existence of well-behaved Beurling number systems, which are systems of Beurling generalized primes and integers which admit a power saving in the error term of both their prime and integer-counting function. Concretely, we search for so-called $[\alpha,\beta]$-systems, where $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are connected to the optimal power saving in the prime and integer-counting functions. It is known that every $[\alpha,\beta]$-system satisfies $\max\{\alpha,\beta\}\ge1/2$. In this paper we show there are $[\alpha,\beta]$-systems for each $\alpha \in [0,1)$ and $\beta \in [1/2, 1)$. Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, we also construct certain families of $[\alpha,\beta]$-systems with $\beta<1/2$.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:In order to study the analytic properties of the Goldbach generating function we consider a smooth version, similar to the Chebyshev function for the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain explicit numerical estimates for the average order of its summatory function both in the classical case and in arithmetic progressions. These support the existing asymptotic results, under the (Generalised) Riemann Hypothesis, involving error terms.

Abstract:We study the notion of Beurling-Malliavin density from the point of view of Number Theory. We prove a general relation between the Beurling-Malliavin density and the upper asymptotic density; we identify a class of sequences for which the two densities coincide; this class contains the arithmetic progressions. Last, by means of an alternative definition of Beurling-Malliavin density, we study the connection with the asymptotic density for another kind of sequences that again generalizes the arithmentic progressions.

He showed that the asymptotic formula Φ ( x , y ) = μ y ( u ) e γ x log ⁡ y ∏ p ≤ y ( 1 − 1 p ) + O ( x R ( y ) log ⁡ y ) holds uniformly for all x ≥ y ≥ 2 , where R ( y ) is a positive decreasing function related to the error estimates in the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain numerically explicit versions of de Bruijn's result.

The Prime Geodesic Theorem and Bounds for Character Sums

Abstract:We establish the prime geodesic theorem for the modular surface with exponent $\frac{2}{3}+\varepsilon$, improving upon the long-standing exponent $\frac{25}{36}+\varepsilon$ of Soundararajan-Young (2013). This was previously known conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions. Our argument goes through a well-trodden trail via the automorphic machinery, and refines the techniques of Iwaniec (1984) and Cai (2002) to a maximum extent. A key ingredient is an asymptotic for bilinear forms with a counting function in Kloosterman sums via hybrid Weyl-strength subconvex bounds for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions due to Young (2017), zero density estimates due to Heath-Brown (1995) near the edge of the critical strip, and an asymptotic for averages of Zagier $L$-series due to Balkanova-Frolenkov-Risager (2022). Furthermore, we strengthen our exponent to $\frac{5}{8}+\varepsilon$ conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, which breaks the existing barrier.

Abstract:1. Introduction. Many problems involving prime numbers depend on estimating sums of the form ΣΛ( n ) f ( n ), for appropriate functions f ( n ), (here, as usual, Λ( n ) is the von Mangoldt function). Three distinct general methods have been used to estimate such sums. The earliest is due to Vinogradov (see [ 13 , Chapter 9]); the second involves zerodensity bounds for Dirichlet L –functions (see [ 8 , Chapters 15 and 16] for example); and the third, due to Vaughan (see [ 12 ] for example) uses an arithmetical identity as will be explained later. The second and third methods are much simpler to apply than the first. On the other hand Vinogradov's technique is at least as powerful as Vaughan's and occasionally more so. In many cases Vaughan's identity yields better bounds than the use of zero–density estimates, but sometimes they are worse. The object of this paper is to present a simple extension of Vaughan's method which is essentially as powerful as any of the techniques mentioned above, to discuss its general implications, and to apply it to the proof of the following result of Huxley [ 4 ], which has previously only been within the scope of the zero density method.

Abstract:This paper gives an explicit version of Selberg's 1943 mean-value estimate for the prime number theorem in intervals under the Riemann hypothesis. Two applications are given: for primes in short intervals, and Goldbach numbers (sums of two primes) in short intervals. Under the Riemann hypothesis, we show there exists a prime in $(y,y+32277\log^2 y]$ for at least half the $y\in[x,2x]$ for all $x\geq 2$, and at least one Goldbach number in $(x,x+9696 \log^2 x]$ for all $x\geq 2$.

Abstract:In 1845, Bertrand conjectured that twice any prime strictly exceeds the next prime. Tchebichef proved Bertrand's postulate in 1850. In 1934, Ishikawa proved a stronger result: the sum of any two consecutive primes strictly exceeds the next prime, except for the only equality $2+3=5$. This observation is a special case of a more general result, perhaps not previously noticed: if $p_n$ denotes the $n$th prime, $n=1, 2, \ldots$, with $p_1=2, p_2=3, \ldots$, and if $c_1, \ldots, c_g$ are nonnegative integers (not necessarily distinct), and $d_1, \ldots, d_h$ are positive integers (not necessarily distinct), and $g>h\ge 1$, then there exists a positive integer $N$ such that $p_{n-c_1}+p_{n-c_2}+\cdots +p_{n-c_g}>p_{n+d_1}+\cdots +p_{n+d_h}$ for all $n\ge N$. We prove this result using only the prime number theorem. For any instance of this result, we sketch a way to find the least possible $N$. We give some numerical results and unanswered questions.

Abstract:For $n \in \mathbb{N}$ let $\Pi[n]$ denote the set of partitions of $n$, i.e., the set of positive integer tuples $(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k)$ such that $x_1 \geq x_2 \geq \cdots \geq x_k$ and $x_1 + x_2 + \cdots + x_k = n$. Fixing $f:\mathbb{N}\to\{0,\pm 1\}$, for $\pi = (x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k) \in \Pi[n]$ let $f(\pi) := f(x_1)f(x_2)\cdots f(x_k)$. In this way we define the {signed partition numbers} \[ p(n,f) = \sum_{\pi\in\Pi[n]} f(\pi). \] Following work of Vaughan and Gafni on partitions into primes and prime powers, we derive asymptotic formulae for quantities $p(n,\mu)$ and $p(n,\lambda)$, where $\mu$ and $\lambda$ denote the Möbius and Liouville functions from prime number theory, respectively. In addition we discuss how quantities $p(n,f)$ generalize the classical notion of restricted partitions.
