Abstract:We give an outline of a generalization of the Gelfond-Schnirelmann method in elementary number theory. It is related to an integral of Selberg (1944) generalizing the Euler beta integral. The result we explain was obtained by Nair and Chudnovsky independently in the early eighties.

Abstract:In this paper, we shall study the stellar work of Norwegian mathematician Selberg and Hungarian mathematician Erdős in providing an Elementary proof of the well-known \textit{Prime Number Theorem}. In addition to introducing ourselves to the notion of \textit{Arithmetic Functions}, we shall primarily focus our research on obtaining suitable estimates for the \textit{Chebyshev Theta Function} $\vartheta(x)$. Furthermore, we'll try to infer about the asymptotic properties of another function $\rho(x)$, which shall be needed later on in establishing an equivalent statement of our main result. All the mathematical terminologies pertinent to the proof have been discussed in the earlier sections of the text.

Abstract:This paper gives an explicit version of Selberg's mean-value estimate for the prime number theorem in intervals, assuming the Riemann hypothesis [25]. Two applications are given to short-interval results for primes and for Goldbach numbers. Under the Riemann hypothesis, we show there exists a prime in for at least half the for all , and at least one Goldbach number in for all .

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we present a smooth version of Landau's explicit formula for the von Mangoldt arithmetical function. By assuming the validity of the Riemann hypothesis, we show that in order to determine whether a natural number [math] is a prime number, it is sufficient to know the location of a number of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function of order [math]. Next we use Heisenberg's inequality to support the conjecture that this number of zeros cannot be essentially diminished.

Notes on Primitive Roots Modulo Primes

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes. For an odd prime $p$ and an integer $c$, we establish a theorem concerning $\sum_g(\frac{g+c}p)$, where $g$ runs over all the primitive roots modulo $p$ among $1,\ldots,p-1$, and $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. On the basis of our numerical computations, we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes. For example, we conjecture that for any prime $p$ there is a primitive root $g 3$ there is a prime $q 3$ there exists a Fibonacci number $F_k 3$.

Abstract:This paper was written, apart from one technical correction, in July and August of 2013. The, then very recent, breakthrough of Y. Zhang [18] had revived in us an intention to produce a second edition of our book “Opera de Cribro”, one which would include an account of Zhang’s result, stressing the sieve aspects of the method. A complete and connected version of the proof, in our style but not intended for journal publication, seemed a natural first step in this project.Following the further spectacular advance given by J. Maynard (arXiv:1311. 4600, Nov 20, 2013), we have had to re-think our position. Maynard’s method, at least in its current form, proceeds from GPY in quite a different direction than does Zhang’s, and achieves numerically superior results. Consequently, although Zhang’s contribution to the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions certainly retains its importance, the fact remains that much of the material in this paper would no longer appear in a new edition of our book. Because this paper contains some innovations that we do not wish to become lost, we have decided to make the work publicly available in its original format. We are extremely pleased to be able to include it in the current volume, commemorating the one hundred and twenty-fifth anninversary of the birth of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

On the Infinitude of Some Special Kinds of Primes

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to try to establish a generic model for the problem that several multivariable number-theoretic functions represent simultaneously primes for infinitely many integral points. More concretely, we introduced briefly the research background-the history and current situation-from Euclid's second theorem to Green-Tao theorem. We analyzed some equivalent necessary conditions that irreducible univariable polynomials with integral coefficients represent infinitely many primes, found new necessary conditions which perhaps imply that there are only finitely many Fermat primes, obtained an analogy of the Chinese Remainder Theorem, generalized Euler's function, the prime-counting function and Schinzel-Sierpinski's Conjecture and so on. Nevertheless, this is only a beginning and it miles to go. We hope that number theorists consider further it.

Abstract:We present a new random approximation method that yields the existence of a discrete Beurling prime system which is very close in a certain precise sense to a given non-decreasing, right-continuous, nonnegative, and unbounded function F . This discretization procedure improves an earlier discrete random approximation method due to Diamond et al. (Math Ann 334:1–36, 2006), and refined by Zhang (Math Ann 337:671–704, 2007). We obtain several applications. Our new method is applied to a question posed by Balazard concerning Dirichlet series with a unique zero in their half plane of convergence, to construct examples of very well-behaved generalized number systems that solve a recent open question raised by Hilberdink and Neamah (Int J Number Theory 16(05):1005–1011, 2020), and to improve the main result from (Adv Math 370:Article 107240, 2020), where a Beurling prime system with regular primes but extremely irregular integers was constructed.

Abstract:We prove a prime number theorem first for the classical Rankin-Selberg L-function $L(s,\pi\times\pi')$ over any Galois extension with $\pi$ and $\pi'$ unitary automorphic cuspidal representations of $GL_n$ and $GL_m$ respectively with at least one of the representations subject to a self-contragredient assumption. We then extend these results to two representations $\pi$ defined on $GL_n/E$ and $\pi'$ defined on $GL_m/F$ with $E$ and $F$ cylic algebraic number fields of coprime degree where $\pi$ and $\pi'$ admit a base change lift from $\mathbb{Q}$ again given a self-contragredient assumption on at least one of the representations which lift to $\pi$ or $\pi'$.

Abstract:We give a new sufficient condition which allows to test primality of Fermat's numbers. This characterization uses uniquely values at most equal to tested Fermat number. The robustness of this result is due to a strict use of elementary arithmetic technical tools and it will be susceptible to open gates for revolutionary statement that all Fermat's numbers are all decomposable.

Abstract:Determining the exact number of primes at large magnitudes is computationally intensive, making approximation methods (e.g., the logarithmic integral, prime number theorem, Riemann zeta function, Chebyshev's estimates, etc.) particularly valuable. These methods also offer avenues for number-theoretic exploration through analytical manipulation. In this work, we introduce a novel approximation function, φ(n), which adds to the existing repertoire of approximation methods and provides a fresh perspective for number-theoretic studies. Deeper analytical investigation of φ(n) reveals modified representations of the Chebyshev function, prime number theorem, and Riemann zeta function. Computational studies indicate that the difference between φ(n) and the logarithmic integral at magnitudes greater than 10100 is less than 1%.

Abstract:We give a simple Tauberian proof of the Prime Number Theorem using only elementary real analysis. Hence, the analytic continuation of Riemann's zeta function $\zeta$ and its non-vanishing value on the whole line $\{z\in {\mathbb C};\,{\mathrm{Re}\,} z=1\}$ are no more required. This is achieved by showing a strong extension for Laplace transforms on the real line of Wiener--Ikehara's theorem on Dirichlet's series, where the Tauberian assumption is reduced to a local boundary behavior around the pole.

Abstract:An integer is a primitive root modulo a prime $p$ if it generates the whole multiplicative group $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^*$. In 1927 Artin conjectured that an integer $a$ which is not $-1$ or a square is a primitive root for infintely many primes, and that the set of those primes has a positive asymptotic density among all primes. This conjectured was proved, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH), in 1967 by Hooley. More generally, an integer is called a generalized primitive root modulo $n$ if it generates a subgroup of $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^*$ of maximal size. Li and Pomerance showed, under GRH, that the set of integers for which a given integer is a generalized primitive root doesn't have an asymptotic density among all integers. We study here the set of the $\ell$-almost primes, i.e. integers with at most $\ell$ prime factors, for which a given integer $a\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{-1\}$, which is not a square, is a generalized primitive root, and we prove, under GRH, that this set has an asymptotic density among all the $\ell$-almost primes.

Abstract:Let $\nu_y(n)$ denote the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ that are $<y$. For $k$ a positive integer, and for $k+2\leq y\leq x$, let $S_{-k}(x,y)$ denote the sum \begin{eqnarray*} S_{-k}(x,y):=\sum_{n\leq x}(-k)^{\nu_y(n)}. \end{eqnarray*} In this paper, we describe our recent results on the asymptotic behavior of $S_{-k}(x,y)$ for $k+2\leq y\leq x$, and $x$ sufficiently large. There is a crucial difference in the asymptotic behavior of $S_{-k}(x,y)$ when $k+1$ is a prime and $k+1$ is composite, and this makes the problem particularly interesting. The results are derived utilizing a combination of the Buchstab-de Bruijn recurrence, the Perron contour integral method, and certain difference-differential equations. We present a summary of our results against the background of earlier work of the first author on sums of the Möbius function over integers with restricted prime factors and on a multiplicative generalization of the sieve.
