Abstract:For $n \in \mathbb{N}$ let $\Pi[n]$ denote the set of partitions of $n$, i.e., the set of positive integer tuples $(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k)$ such that $x_1 \geq x_2 \geq \cdots \geq x_k$ and $x_1 + x_2 + \cdots + x_k = n$. Fixing $f:\mathbb{N}\to\{0,\pm 1\}$, for $\pi = (x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k) \in \Pi[n]$ let $f(\pi) := f(x_1)f(x_2)\cdots f(x_k)$. In this way we define the {signed partition numbers} \[ p(n,f) = \sum_{\pi\in\Pi[n]} f(\pi). \] Following work of Vaughan and Gafni on partitions into primes and prime powers, we derive asymptotic formulae for quantities $p(n,\mu)$ and $p(n,\lambda)$, where $\mu$ and $\lambda$ denote the Möbius and Liouville functions from prime number theory, respectively. In addition we discuss how quantities $p(n,f)$ generalize the classical notion of restricted partitions.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the research of partition numbers with Mobius symbols (i.e., signed partition numbers). Specifically:
1. **Definition and Background**:
- Firstly, the paper defines the signed partition number \( p(n, f) \), where \( f \) is a function from natural numbers to \(\{0, \pm 1\}\). For a partition \(\pi=(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_k)\) of \( n \), define \( f(\pi)=f(x_1)f(x_2)\cdots f(x_k) \).
- In particular, when \( f \) is the Mobius function \(\mu\) or the Liouville function \(\lambda\), the properties of \( p(n, \mu) \) and \( p(n, \lambda) \) are studied.
2. **Main Objectives**:
- **Asymptotic Formulas**: One of the main objectives of the paper is to derive the asymptotic formulas of \( p(n, \mu) \) and \( p(n, \lambda) \). These formulas can describe the behavior of these partition numbers as \( n \) approaches infinity.
- **Boundary Estimates**: Another important objective is to give the upper - bound estimates of \( p(n, \mu) \) and \( p(n, \lambda) \). For example, the paper proves that for any \(\epsilon> 0\), as \( n \) approaches infinity:
\[
p(n, \mu)=O\left(e^{(1 + \epsilon)\sqrt{n}}\right)\quad\text{and}\quad p(n, \lambda)=O\left(e^{(1+\epsilon)\sqrt{\zeta(2)n}}\right),
\]
where \(\zeta(2)=\frac{\pi^2}{6}\).
3. **Specific Contributions**:
- **Generating Functions**: The paper introduces the generating functions \(\Phi(z, f)\) and \(\Psi(z, f)\) and uses these functions to study the properties of \( p(n, f) \).
- **Saddle - Point Method**: By the saddle - point method, the paper derives the exact asymptotic formulas of \( p(x, \mu) \) and \( p(x, \lambda) \), which give very accurate estimates as \( x \) approaches infinity.
- **Analysis of Special Values**: The paper also specifically analyzes the behavior of \( p(2k, \mu) \) and \( p(2k, \lambda) \) when \( n = 2k \), and proves that:
\[
\log p(2k, \mu)\sim\sqrt{2k}\quad\text{and}\quad\log p(2k, \lambda)\sim\sqrt{\zeta(2)2k}.
\]
In summary, the main objective of this paper is to conduct in - depth research on the signed partition numbers \( p(n, \mu) \) and \( p(n, \lambda) \), derive their asymptotic formulas and upper - bound estimates, thereby providing an important theoretical basis for understanding the properties of these partition numbers.
