Abstract:Objectives: Microplastics from plastic materials can affect human health. This study aimed to assess their presence in nasal irrigation fluids obtained from reused bottles based on usage duration. Methods: Readily available nasal irrigation bottles made of polypropylene were purchased. Unused irrigation bottles served as controls. Bottles mimicking 1-, 3-, and 6-month reuse were prepared as test samples. Nasal irrigation fluid samples (n=12) were collected from each set of irrigation bottles: three from new control bottles and nine from bottles mimicking 1-, 3-, and 6-month reuse. Raman spectroscopy was employed to detect microplastics in the nasal irrigation samples; the results were compared according to the bottle use duration. Results: An average of 33.00±20.42 (ea/300 mL) microplastic particles was detected in the nasal irrigation fluid from the control bottles relative to an average of 68.66±30.07, 261.66±20.59, and 204.33±52.16 (ea/300 mL) from bottles used for 1, 3, and 6 months, respectively. The majority of the detected microplastics were 10-100 μm in size and fragmentshaped in form. The predominant microplastic was polypropylene, indicating direct release from irrigation bottles. Conclusion: We found microplastics in nasal irrigation fluids, likely originating from the repeated use of nasal irrigation bottles. The quantity of microplastics was notably elevated in the samples obtained from bottles simulating 3 months of use compared to those in the control samples. Thus, we propose developing guidelines regulating the duration of nasal irrigation bottle usage to mitigate microplastic infiltration into the body through the sinonasal cavity.

Abstract:Microplastics are less than 5 mm in length and are polymer chains containing carbon and hydrogen atoms. It poses a direct and indirect danger to all living things in the ecosystem. It is found in products such as microplastics, synthetic clothes, plastic bags and bottles, some cleaners, health and beauty products, toothpaste and causes both soil and water pollution from wastewater systems and solid waste. This situation not only threatens the life of creatures living in aquatic ecosystems such as rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans but also penetrates the human body through the food chain, causing various health problems, especially cancer. As with all environmental pollutants, microplastics need to reduce pollution at the source. In this research, treatment methods applied to remove microplastics that cannot be prevented at source from the water ecosystem were investigated and evaluated. According to the results, in wastewater treatment plants, the highest efficiency of microplastic removal is provided by membrane bioreactors. However, by imitating the microplastic removal capabilities and structures of living things in nature, studies on the discovery of new methods of microplastic removal can also be conducted.

Abstract:Aquatic environments are one of the final destinations for microplastics. In this review, a combination of systematic and narrative literature review was conducted to identify and summarise advances, gaps, and future directions in microplastic monitoring studies in the Turkish aquatic environment and in inhabiting aquatic organisms. A total of 62 peer-reviewed publications available on Web of Science were considered in the systematic review. Additionally, the current state of microplastic pollution in Turkish aquatic environments which includes marine and freshwater ecosystems, as well as aquatic organisms, and sources and characteristics of microplastics were reviewed narratively. Türkiye`s position on the global plastic treaty and mitigation practices were also addressed. Although an increase in the number of publications over time was observed, the number and extent of studies carried out in freshwater ecosystems are limited. Strict legislation should be enacted and enforced to tackle plastic pollution in Türkiye. Additionally, nationwide, long-term monitoring studies at sufficiently regular intervals in aquatic environments should be considered.

Microplastics were present, and major types were polyethylene, polyester, acrylic polymer, and polypropylene. Further research is needed regarding microplastics and its clinical impact on human nasal cavity.
Microplastic pollution in two remote rivers of Türkiye

Abstract:Microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems presents an emerging environmental threat that can have adverse effects on ecology, endanger aquatic species, and result in economic damage. Despite the numerous studies reporting the presence of microplastics in marine environments, research into their presence in freshwater systems or inland waters remains limited. This study aimed to assess the level of microplastic pollution transported by the Munzur and Pülümür Rivers and some small rivers that flow into the Uzunçayır dam lake, which is the confluence of the Munzur and Pülümür Rivers in Türkiye. Samples were collected from 23 stations, with the concentration of microplastics ranging from 0.01 MP/m3 at P-4 station to 28.21 MP/m3 at P-10, a station located near a city. Microplastics comprise four types: fiber, film, fragment, and glitter. The average size of microplastics was 1.46 ± 0.05 mm, with the average size of fibers, films, fragments, and glitter-type microplastics being 1.58 ± 0.07 mm, 1.23 ± 0.10 mm, 1.21 ± 0.11 mm, and 0.78 ± 0.16 mm, respectively. The most frequent polymers were polyethylene (31.8%), polystyrene (21.1%), and polypropylene (10.5%). Despite being considered remote and less populated rivers compared to other river systems in Türkiye, all sampling sites showed varying concentrations of microplastics.
Microplastic contamination in some beverages marketed in türkiye: Characteristics, dietary exposure and risk assessment

Abstract:In this study, microplastic contamination in water, natural mineral water and mineral water, sparkling soft drinks, cold tea and some traditional beverages marketed in Türkiye were assessed. Microplastics physically and chemically characterized by microscope and ATR/FT-IR, respectively. Microplastics were detected in 9 out of 47 beverage samples. A total of 250 microplastics with 5 different polymers, 2 different shapes, and 7 different colours were detected in 47 beverage samples. The average microplastic concentration was 2.24 ± 9.86 particles/L for all beverages analysed. The highest average microplastic concentration was found in mineral waters in glass bottles (average 11.3 particles/L). No microplastics were found in cold tea and other drinks. The total annual microplastic exposure from beverage consumption in male and female individuals aged >15 years was 2029 and 1786 particles/mL/year, respectively. The microplastic load index category of all beverage samples was determined as "moderate". The average pRi level of all beverages was 117 ± 260 and the risk level was determined as "low". The study provides evidence that microplastics are common in beverages and that microplastics are directly ingested by humans.

Abstract:This study investigates the presence of microplastics (MPs) in hypertonic fluid solutions, a widely used medical treatment packaged predominantly in plastic. For this purpose, 13 hypertonic fluid samples from various brands has been analyzed via employing visual particle counting, μ-Raman Microscopy, and ATR-FTIR. The results reveal the pervasive presence of MPs in all samples, with an estimated average concentration of 62.82 ± 72.38 MPs/1000 mL. The packaging materials of the solutions was polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Interestingly, there was no statistically significant difference in MP concentration between PP and PVC packaging. The particles predominantly consisted of fragments (74.1%) and fibers (25.9%), ranging in size from 0.04 to 2.37 mm. μ-Raman analysis identified 12 synthetic polymers as well as cellulose, with polyethylene and cellulose being the most prevalent. In conclusion, this study underscores the alarming presence of MPs in hypertonic fluid solutions, raising concerns about potential health risks.

Abstract:Micro(nano)plastics are considered an emerging threat to human health because they can interact with biological systems. In fact, these materials have already been found in the human body, such as in the lungs. However, limited data are available on the behavior of these materials under biological conditions and their impact on human cells, specifically on alveolar epithelial cells. In this study, micro(nano)plastics were exposed to various simulated biological fluids (artificial lysosomal fluids and Gamble's solution) for 2–80 h. Pristine and treated plastic particles were characterized based on their surface chemistry, zeta potentials, and elemental composition. Various toxicological endpoints (mitochondrial membrane potential, lactate dehydrogenase, protein, and antioxidant levels) were examined using A549 lung carcinoma cells. The surface characteristics of the treated micro(nano)plastics and the toxicological endpoints of A549 cells were found to be influenced by the simulated biological media, specifically with high concentrations of the treated micro(nano)plastics and increasing exposure under biological conditions. Moreover, the toxicological endpoints were strongly linked to the chemistry of plastics and included multiple processes in response to the plastics; different biological pathways were obtained in artificial lysosomal fluid and Gamble's solution.
Microplastic pollution and human risk assessment in Turkish bottled natural and mineral waters

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), which arise from the deterioration of larger plastics that are frequently used in daily life and are smaller than 5 mm in size, are found in many environments and can pose a serious threat to human health. Humans ingest these microplastics unintendedly through drinking water. Although plastic pollution has been extensively investigated in a variety of water sources, research on MP contamination in bottled waters is scarce. Hence, in this study, the presence and distribution of MPs were investigated in 150 samples of bottled natural and mineral water brands in Türkiye. Using FTIR stereoscopy and stereomicroscope analysis, MPs were detected in 43 out of the 50 (86%) of these brands. Among the four types of polymers detected, the most abundant type was polyethylene (33%), polypropylene (31%), polyethylene terephthalate (25%), and polyamid (11%). In comparison to natural waters, mineral waters had larger average-sized particles (63.98 ± 4.06 vs. 104.83 ± 14.28 μm) and higher MP concentrations (4.6 ± 0.5 vs. 12.6 ± 1.6 particles/L). Although the most dominant shape was found as fiber in natural waters, fragments were more prevalent in mineral waters. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) for adults and children were expected to be 0.019 and 0.42 MP/kg/bw/day, respectively, in natural waters while EDI were 0.009 and 0.04 MP/kg/bw/day, respectively, in mineral waters. The results of the study suggest that the EDI and annual intake (EAI) are negligible when compared to other studies. The baseline data on MP contamination of bottled water provided in the present study may be significant and useful for researchers to have a better understanding of microplastic contamination exposure.

Abstract:Ear, Nose &Throat Journal, Ahead of Print. Objectives: We investigated the effectiveness of different types of nasal irrigation sprays in adult allergic rhinitis (AR) patients. Methods: A total of 1700 patients with AR (866 males and 834 females) were assigned to: Group 1: Hypertonic nasal spray group (n = 600) (Sinomarin® hypertonic nasal spray); Group 2: Algae-containing hypertonic nasal spray group (n = 600) (Sinomarin Plus Algae ENT); and Group 3: Isotonic saline nasal spray group (n = 500). All patients underwent an otolaryngological examination, continued their standard AR treatment, and received the assigned nasal spray additionally (1 spray to each nostril, 3 times a day, for 3 weeks). Allergic symptom scores, turbinate examination, total symptom scores, and quality of life (QoL) scores were evaluated during pre- and post-treatment periods. Results: In groups 1 and 2, symptom scores and turbinate color and edema, total symptom scores, and QoL scores increased after treatment (P < .05). In the saline group, there were no significant differences in symptom scores and total symptom scores after treatment; however, improvement was detected in turbinate color and edema values after treatment. QoL scores increased after treatment. When comparing the 3 groups, the total symptom scores of groups 1 and 2 were significantly lower, and the QoL scores of groups 1 and 2 were considerably higher than those of the saline group. There were no significant differences between groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: Algae-containing and hypertonic nasal spray may be added to the standard AR treatment to increase QoL and decrease total symptom scores.

Effect of Microplastic Particles on the Rheological Properties of Human Saliva and Mucus

Abstract:Pollution by plastic microparticles is rising rapidly. One avenue of human exposure to nanoparticles is through inhalation. The main source of microplastics in indoor environments, leading to unintended inhalation, is synthetic fabric used in clothing. Other sources include curtains, carpets, furniture, wall paints, and floor finishes. Occupational exposure is particularly significant in waste management and recycling operations, during exposure to high heat, during high-energy treatment of polymer composites, and during 3D printing. In outdoor environments, exposure can happen through breathing in contaminated aerosols from ocean waves or airborne particles from dried wastewater treatments. Airborne particles affect human health in various ways, including via direct interactions with the epithelium and its mucus layer after deposition in the mouth and respiratory system. Exposure due to the ingestion of microplastics present in various environmental compartments may occur either directly or indirectly via the food chain or drinking water. This study aimed to determine the effects of plastic microparticles on the rheology of mucus and saliva, and, thus, their functioning. The experiments used artificial mucus, saliva, and plastic nanoparticles (namely, PS-polystyrene and PE-polyethylene). The rheological properties of saliva and mucus were determined via the use of an oscillatory rheometer at various temperatures (namely, 36.6 °C and 40 °C, which correspond to healthy and ill humans). The results were compared with those obtained for pure saliva and mucus. An increase in apparent viscosity was observed for saliva, which is behavior typical of for solid particle suspensions in liquids. In contrast, for mucus, the effect was the opposite. The influence of the presence of the particles on the parameters of the constitutive viscosity equations was studied. Plastic micro- and nanoparticles in the saliva and mucus may interfere with their physiological functions.

Abstract:Plastics are an integral but largely inconspicuous part of daily human routines. The present review paper uses cross-disciplinary scientific literature to examine and assess the possible effects of nanoplastics (NPs) concerning microplastics (MPs) on human health and summarizes crucial areas for future research. Although research on the nature and consequences of MPs has seen a substantial rise, only limited studies have concentrated on the atmospheric nanosized polymeric particles. However, due to the intrinsic technological complications in separating and computing them, their existence has been difficult to determine correctly. There is a consensus that these are not only existing in the environment but can get directly released or as the outcome of weathering of larger fragments, and it is believed to be that combustion can be the tertiary source of polymeric particles. NPs can have harmful consequences on human health, and their exposure may happen via ingestion, inhalation, or absorption by the skin. The atmospheric fallout of micro (nano) plastics may be responsible for contaminating the environment. Apart from this, different drivers affect the concentration of micro (nano) plastics in every environment compartment like wind, water currents, vectors, soil erosion, run-off, etc. Their high specific surface for the sorption of organic pollutions and toxic heavy metals and possible transfer between organisms at different nutrient levels make the study of NPs an urgent priority. These NPs could potentially cause physical damage by the particles themselves and biological stress by NPs alone or by leaching additives. However, there is minimal understanding of the occurrence, distribution, abundance, and fate of NPs in the environment, partially due to the lack of suitable techniques for separating and identifying NPs from complex environmental matrices.
Co-occurence of antibiotics and micro(nano)plastics: a systematic review between 2016-2021

Abstract:Pollution by plastics and antibiotics are emerging issues in the areas of the environment and human health. In recent years, several studies have documented the widespread occurrence of plastic particles in various environmental, as well as human, systems, and much research has focused on possible interactions of contaminants with microplastics. Thus, the co-occurrence of plastics and antibiotics has caused another global problem for the environment and human health. Therefore, we focused on the current knowledge in the field of the co-occurrence of plastics and antibiotics to summarize the available studies. In this review, categorization of the topics, contaminants details, such as polymer type, size and source, antibiotic type, and other experimental parameters were summarized and discussed. This study indicated that the sorption of antibiotics on plastics, antibiotic susceptibility in the presence of plastics, and antibiotic resistance gene onto plastics were the most frequently examined categories in this field. Moreover, the variability in the procedures and the processes, and the heterogeneity data of reporting between different studies on similar topic make it difficult to bring all results together and produce a comprehensive picture of the current knowledge. Therefore, it is suggested that further research should be done using this systematic study.

Abstract:Microplastics are environmental contaminants of emerging concern that are used in huge quantities in cosmetics and personal care products. As a result, microplastics are continuously released to the environment with serious implications to the ecosystem and human health. A literature search was carried out on Medline, Mendeley, Science Direct and Scopus, gathering relevant articles from 2014-2021. Common types of microplastics used in these products are polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). They are usually incorporated in toothpastes, shower gels, shampoos, creams, eye shadows, deodorants, blush powders, make-up foundations and skin creams as exfoliators, emulsifiers, binding agents, opacifying agents, anti-static agents and film-forming agents. Microplastics can cause stunted growth, infertility and low survival rate in aquatic life and they also have been linked to obesity, infertility, cancer and diabetes in humans. Major companies such as Unilever and L'Oréal have removed microplastics from their products or use the alternatives such as chitin, cellulose based microbeads and bio-based plastics. Information on long term effects of microplastics on humans is still scarce. The suitability of materials replacing microplastics and the effectiveness of campaigns and the implemented regulations are not fully evaluated. These research gaps are useful for other researchers to explore more on this subject.

Microplastics in Sea Turtles, Marine Mammals and Humans: A One Environmental Health Perspective

Abstract:Microplastics are ubiquitous pollutants in the marine environment and a health concern. They are generated directly for commercial purposes or indirectly from the breakdown of larger plastics. Examining a toxicological profile for microplastics is a challenge due to their large variety of physico-chemical properties and toxicological behavior. In addition to their concentration, other parameters such as polymer type, size, shape and color are important to consider in their potential toxicity. Microplastics can adsorb pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) or metals on their surface and are likely to contain plastic additives that add to their toxicity. The observations of microplastics in seafood increased concern for potential human exposure. Since literature considering microplastics in humans is scarce, using a One Environmental Health approach can help better inform about potential human exposures. Marine mammals and sea turtles are long-lived sentinel species regularly used for biomonitoring the health status of the ocean and share trophic chain and habitat with humans. This review considers the available research regarding microplastic and plastic fiber exposures in humans, marine mammals and turtles. Overall, across the literature, the concentration of microplastics, size, color, shape and polymer types found in GI tract and feces from sea turtles, marine mammals and humans are similar, showing that they might be exposed to the same microplastics profile. Additionally, even if ingestion is a major route of exposure due to contaminated food and water, dermal and inhalation studies in humans have provided data showing that these exposures are also health concerns and more effort on these routes of exposures is needed. In vitro studies looked at a variety of endpoints showing that microplastics can induce immune response, oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, alter membrane integrity and cause differential expression of genes. However, these studies only considered three polymer types and short-term exposures, whereas, due to physiological relevance, prolonged exposures might be more informative.

Abstract:Ear, Nose &Throat Journal, Ahead of Print. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate how Rhinapi nasal spray affects symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Methods: In this prospective, multicenter, observational study, 10,000 patients (comprising 5028 males and 4972 females) exhibiting symptoms of allergic rhinitis (namely, nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal itching, and nasal obstruction) from different centers in different regions of Turkey were enrolled in the study between March 2022 and March 2023. All the patients wanted to participate in the study and were administered Rhinapi one puff to each nostril three times a day, for a period of 3 weeks. Total symptom scores, quality of life (QoL) scores, and otolaryngological examination scores were evaluated before and 3 weeks after treatment. Results: The scores for discharge from the nose, sneezing, nasal pruritus, and blockage of the nose all indicated improvement when compared to pre-medication and post-medication. This difference achieved statistical significance (P < .001). The mean total symptom score fell following treatment (P < .001): whilst the score was 11.09 ± 3.41 before administering Rhinapi; after administration, the average score was 6.23 ± 2.41. The mean QoL scores also altered after medication (P < .001), improving from a mean value of 6.44 ± 1.55 to a mean of 7.31 ± 1.24. Significant improvement was also noted in the scores for conchal color and degree of edema after the treatment had been administered (P < .001). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Rhinapi nasal spray decreases total symptom scores, and results in improved QoL and otolaryngological examination scores. Propolis spray may be recommended for patients with allergic rhinitis alongside other treatments.

Microplastics Identified in Commercial Over-the-counter Lubricant Eyedrops

Abstract:Purpose There is increasing evidence that microplastics exert harmful effects on human health and on the ocular surface. Recent studies have highlighted the presence of ocular surface exposure to microplastics via shedding from contact lenses. This study aims to investigate if microplastic particles are present in commonly used eyedrops in single-use plastic vials. Design Experimental study. Methods Nine commonly used commercial tear-replacement solutions available without a doctor's prescription were tested (Brands A-I). All brands of eyedrops were analysed visually using light microscopy and the number of microplastic particles were manually counted. Brands A-F were further analysed using the 8700 Agilent Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging system to identify the microplastic compositions. Results All eyedrops analysed contained microplastics. The number of microplastic particles identified using light microscopy ranged between 15 (Brand E) to >18,000 (Brand F). In total, nine types of microplastics were identified with LDIR - an average of 14 polyethylene, 8 polypropylene, 1 polystyrene, 2 polyvinylchloride, 21 polyethylene terephthalate, 1 polycarbonate, 19 polymethylmethacrylate, 23 polyamide and 22 polyurethane per millilitre of eyedrop were identified. Conclusions This is the first study that identified microplastics in commercial tear-replacement solutions. These particles may have been derived from secondary degradation of the plastic vials (polyethylene) during production, transportation, or storage, and represent a major source of exposure to the ocular surface, especially among patients who require chronic instillation of eyedrops.

Abstract:Given the convenience of using plastics, addressing the growing concerns about their hazardous health effects is imperative. Consequently, a comprehensive risk assessment is necessary to gauge the potential harm microplastics pose. With its urgent call to action, this study aimed to investigate the indoor source and abundance of microplastics in private dental units during routine professional activities. The current analyzed microplastic quantity variations based on morphological characteristics, seasonal fluctuations and polymer-types. The polymer hazard index (PHI) was calculated to evaluate the significant human health risks posed to dental professionals by inhalation of microplastics. Dust samples were collected using a clean brush and steel pan from various flat and horizontal surfaces within each dental unit. The study found that clinical dental units had fewer microplastics (587 ± 184.9 MPs/g/day) than teaching hospitals (1083.80 ± 133.7MPs/g/day), with comparatively more abundance in winter (31 %). ATR-FTIR analysis determined polyethylene terephthalate to be a more abundant polymer (39 %). This study also found an average inhalation microplastic intake risk of 20.23 MP/g/day and 5259.85 MP/g/year for clinical and 29.45 MP/g/day and 765.12 MP/g/year for teaching hospital dental units. Female dental professionals have 1.1 times more microplastic inhalation risks than male dental professionals. According to PHI findings, overall minor to medium polymer risk was determined. In conclusion, this evidence-based research underscores the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable practices in the dental healthcare sector. Dental professionals should prioritize using non-plastic material protective equipment and a proper ventilation system to reduce exposure to these particles.
Understanding the interaction of micro(nano)plastics with simulated saliva, lysosomal and Gamble’s �uids and their impact on human lung epithelial A549 cells

Abstract:Micro(nano)plastics are considered an emerging threat to human health since they have potential to interact with biological systems and already been found in the human body, e.g., lungs. However, limited data is available for their behavior under biological conditions and impact on human cells, speci�cally alveolar epithelial cells. In this study, micro(nano)plastics weathered to various simulated biological �uids (saliva, arti�cial lysosomal �uids, Gamble’s solution) during 2 h to 80 h. Pristine and weathered plastic particles were characterized by their surface chemistry, zeta potentials, and elemental composition. After, various toxicological endpoints (mitochondrial membrane potential, lactate dehydrogenase, protein, and antioxidant levels) were examined through A549 lung carcinoma cells. The surface characteristics of micro(nano)plastics and the toxicological endpoints of A549 were in�uenced by the simulated biological weathering, speci�cally at high concentration of micro(nano)plastics and increasing exposure under biological conditions. The results also indicated that toxicological endpoints had strong linked with the chemistry of plastics and included the multiple processes to the response of the plastics, for instance, the cell membrane integrity and mitochondrial activity were declined with the micro(nano)plastics under saliva weathering, contrarily, their protein and antioxidant activities increased. However, different biological pathways were obtained under arti�cial lysosomal �uid and Gamble’s solution.

Abstract:Airborne microplastics are emerging pollutants originating from disposable tableware, packaging materials, textiles, and other consumer goods. Microplastics vary in shape and size and exposed to external factors break down into even smaller fractions. Airborne microplastics are abundant in both urban and natural environments, including water bodies and glaciers, as particles can travel long distances. The potential toxicity of airborne microplastics cannot be underestimated. Microparticles, especially those < 10 μm, entering the human body through inhalation or ingestion have been shown to cause serious adverse health effects, such as chronic inflammation, oxidation stress, physical damage to tissues, etc. Microplastics adsorb toxic chemicals and biopolymers, forming a polymer corona on their surface, affecting their overall toxicity. In addition, microplastics can also affect carbon dynamics in ecosystems and have a serious impact on biochemical cycles. The approaches to improve sampling techniques and develop standardized methods to assess airborne microplastics are still far from being perfect. The mechanisms of microplastic intracellular and tissue transport are still not clear, and the impact of airborne microplastics on human health is not understood well. Reduced consumption followed by collection, reuse, and recycling of microplastics can contribute to solving the microplastic problem. Combinations of different filtration techniques and membrane bioreactors can be used to optimize the removal of microplastic contaminants from wastewater. In this review we critically summarize the existing body of literature on airborne microplastics, including their distribution, identification, and safety assessment.
