Abstract:Let X be an infinite linearly ordered set and let Y be a nonempty subset of X. We calculate the relative rank of the semigroup of all orientation-preserving transformations on X with restricted range Y modulo the semigroup of all order-preserving transformations on X with restricted range Y. For Y = X, we characterize the relative generating sets of minimal size.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the relative rank of the semigroup $T(X,Y)$ of all transformations on a finite chain $X$ with restricted range $Y \subseteq X$ modulo the set $OP(X,Y)$ of all orientation-preserving transformation in $T(X,Y)$. Moreover, we state the relative rank of the semigroup $OP(X,Y)$ modulo the set $O(X,Y)$ of all order-preserving transformations in $OP(X,Y)$. In both cases we characterize the minimal relative generating sets.

Abstract:We slightly generalize a notion of rank introduced by Glasner and Megrelishvili, which captures the oscillations of elements of Ellis semigroups, so that it can be applied to any compact Hausdorff space instead of being limited to the metric case. Then, we relate this rank to classical dividing lines in the model-theoretic stability hierarchy. For example, that the rank is ordinal-valued if and only if the background theory is NIP.

Abstract:The monoid of all partial injections on a finite set (the symmetric inverse semigroup) is of particular interest because of the well-known Wagner-Preston Theorem. In this article, we step forward the study of a submonoid of the symmetric inverse semigroup. We explore the monoid of all order-, fence-, and parity-preserving transformations on an $n$-element chain. We also characterize the transformations in that monoid and show that it has a rank $3n-6$. In particular, we provide a generating set $A_n$ of minimal size and exhibit concrete normal forms for the transformations generated by $A_n$.

Abstract:This work aims at further investigations on the work of Giambruno and Restivo to find the rank of the intersection of two finitely generated submonoids of a free monoid. In this connection, we obtain the rank of a finitely generated submonoid of a free monoid that is accepted by semi-flower automaton with two bpi's. Further, when the product automaton of two deterministic semi-flower automata with a unique bpi is semi-flower with two bpi's, we obtain a sufficient condition on the product automaton in order to satisfy the Hanna Neumann property.

Abstract:We call a semigroup $\mathcal{R}$-noetherian if it satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal right ideals, or, equivalently, the ascending chain condition on $\mathcal{R}$-classes. We investigate the behaviour of the property of being $\mathcal{R}$-noetherian under the following standard semigroup-theoretic constructions: semidirect products, Schützenberger products, free products, Rees matrix semigroups, Brandt extensions, Bruck-Reilly extensions and semilattices of semigroups.

Abstract:We study algebraic properties of the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ of finite partial order isomorphisms of the rank $\leq n$ of an infinite linearly ordered set $(L,\leqslant)$. In particular we describe its idempotents, the natural partial order and Green's relations on $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$. It is proved that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ is stable and it contains tight ideal series. Moreover, we show that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ admits only Rees' congruences and every its homomorphic image is a semigroup with tight ideal series.

Abstract:A formula for the rank of an arbitrary finite completely 0-simple semigroup, represented as a Rees matrix semigroup ℳ0[G; I, Λ; P], is given. The result generalizes that of Ruškuc concerning the rank of connected finite completely 0-simple semigroups. The rank is expressed in terms of |I|, |Λ|, the number of connected components k of P, and a number r min, which we define. We go on to show that the number r min is expressible in terms of a family of subgroups of G, the members of which are in one-to-one correspondence with, and determined by the nonzero entries of, the components of P. A number of applications are given, including a generalization of a result of Gomes and Howie concerning the rank of an arbitrary Brandt semigroup B(G,{1,…,n}).

Abstract:We present a new proof for the main claim made in the author's paper "On the identity bases of Brandt semigroups" (Ural. Gos. Univ. Mat. Zap. 14, no.1 (1985), 38--42); this claim provides an identity basis for an arbitrary Brandt semigroup over a group of finite exponent. We also show how to fill a gap in the original proof of the claim in loc. cit.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented full transformations of a finite chain, as well as the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial transformations and the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial permutations of a finite chain. Characterizations of the monoids of endomorphisms of the subsemigroups of all orientation-preserving transformations of the three semigroups aforementioned are also given. In addition, we compute the number of endomorphisms of each of these six semigroups.

Abstract:A tropical matrix is a matrix defined over the max-plus semiring. For such matrices, there exist several non-coinciding notions of rank: the row rank, the column rank, the Schein/Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank, or the tropical rank, among others. In the present paper, we show that there exists a natural notion of ultimate rank for the powers of a tropical matrix, which does not depend on the underlying notion of rank. Furthermore, we provide a simple formula for the ultimate rank of a matrix which can therefore be computed in polynomial time. Then we turn our attention to finitely generated semigroups of matrices, for which our notion of ultimate rank is generalized naturally. We provide both combinatorial and geometric characterizations of semigroups having maximal ultimate rank. As a byproduct, we obtain a polynomial algorithm to decide if the ultimate rank of a finitely generated semigroup is maximal.

Abstract:The syntactic semigroup problem is to decide whether a given finite semigroup is syntactic or not. This work investigates the syntactic semigroup problem for both the semigroup reducts of [Formula: see text], the affine near-semiring over a Brandt semigroup [Formula: see text]. It is ascertained that both the semigroup reducts of [Formula: see text] are syntactic semigroups.

Abstract:The semigroup is the only 4-element subsemigroup of the 5-element Brandt semigroup , up to isomorphism. Being an inverse semigroup, the semigroup can naturally be considered an additively idempotent semiring and is its subsemiring. We show that the semiring has a finite basis of identities.

Abstract:We define the notion of the partial order of ends of the Cayley graph of a semigroup. We prove that the structure of the ends of a semigroup is invariant under change of finite generating set and at the same time is inherited by subsemigroups and extensions of finite Rees index. We prove an analogue of Hopf’s Theorem, stating that an infinite group has 1, 2 or infinitely many ends, for left cancellative semigroups and that the cardinality of the set of ends is invariant in subsemigroups and extension of finite Green index in left cancellative semigroups.

Abstract:A fence is a particular partial order on a (finite) set, close to the linear order. In this paper, we calculate the rank of the semigroup $\mathcal{FI}_{n}$ of all order-preserving partial injections on an $n$-element fence. In particular, we provide a minimal generating set for $\mathcal{FI}_{n}$. In the present paper, $n$ is odd since this problem for even $n$ was already solved by I. Dimitrova and J. Koppitz.

Abstract:In this paper, we initiate the study of higher rank Baumslag-Solitar semigroups and their related C*-algebras. We focus on two extreme, but interesting, classes - one is related to products of odometers and the other is related to Furstenberg's $\times p,, \times q$ conjecture. For the former class, whose C*-algebras are studied by H. Li and the second author, we here characterize the factoriality of the associated von Neumann algebras and further determine their types; for the latter, we obtain their canonical Cartan subalgebras. In the rank 1 case, we study a more general setting which encompasses (single-vertex) generalized Baumslag-Solitar semigroups. One of our main tools is from self-similar higher rank graphs and their C*-algebras.

Abstract:Tensors, or multi-linear forms, are important objects in a variety of areas from analytics, to combinatorics, to computational complexity theory. Notions of tensor rank aim to quantify the "complexity" of these forms, and are thus also important. While there is one single definition of rank that completely captures the complexity of matrices (and thus linear transformations), there is no definitive analog for tensors. Rather, many notions of tensor rank have been defined over the years, each with their own set of uses. In this paper we survey the popular notions of tensor rank. We give a brief history of their introduction, motivating their existence, and discuss some of their applications in computer science. We also give proof sketches of recent results by Lovett, and Cohen and Moshkovitz, which prove asymptotic equivalence between three key notions of tensor rank over finite fields with at least three elements.

Abstract:Given the action of a group $G$ on a set $X$, an endomorphism of $X$ is a function $f:X \rightarrow X$ which is $G$-equivariant, that is, it commutes with the action, i.e., $f(g\cdot x)= g\cdot f(x)$, for all $x\in X$. The set of endomorphisms of a $G$-set $X$ is a monoid, with the composition of functions , which we will denote $\mathrm{End}_{G}(X)$. Given subsets $U,N\subseteq M$, we say that $U$ generates $M$ modulo $N$ if it is satisfied that $M= \langle U \cup N \rangle$. The relative rank of M modulo N is the minimum cardinality of a set $U$ to generate $M$ modulo $N$. In this work we address the particular case in which $G$ and $X$ are finite to calculate the relative rank of the endomorphism monoid $\mathrm{End}_{G}(X)$ modulo its group of units, denoted by $\mathrm{Aut}_{G}(X)$. We also address structure situations, such as isomorphisms of $\mathrm{Aut}_{G}(X)$ and $\mathrm{End}_{G}(X)$ with other known structures.
