Abstract:Utilization of the whole solar spectrum for the photocatalysis is still a challenge and interesting topic. A series of novel photocatalysts are fabricated by combination of core–shell upconversion nanoparticles NaYF4: Yb, Tm@NaYF4: Yb, Ce (Tm@Ce) with the NH2-MIL-101 (Cr) (NMC) (Tm@Ce/NMC). Tm@Ce/NMC displays the high stability, wide photoresponsive range from UV–Vis to NIR, and excellent photocatalytic activity for decomposition of RhB. With the optimal doping amount of Ce3+ ions and ratio between Tm@Ce and NMC, the degradation of RhB is improved by 1.13, 1.14, and 1.50 times as compared with NaYF4: Yb, Tm/NMC (Tm@NMC), under the simulated solar light, UV + Vis, and NIR, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Tm@Ce/NMC is mainly attributed to the efficient energy transfer between core and shell by the doping Ce3+ ions along with the distinct charge separation and suppressed recombination. By the controlled synthesis, the NaYF4: Yb, Tm (YT) nanoparticle is developed with the similar size as the Tm@Ce to further testify the effect of doping Ce3+ ions and exclude the influence of the increased size. The photocatalytic activity of YT/NMC is the less than that of Tm@Ce/NMC, which is almost the same with that of Tm/NMC. It suggests that to merely increase the size of upconversion nanoparticles is not the judicious choice for enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. On the basis of the trapping experiments and other spectra properties, the possible photocatalytic mechanism is conjectured, which is helpful to refine the structure design with the ultimate aim to get the robust photocatalyst.

Abstract:The key to produce inorganic heterogeneous nanostructures, and to integrate multiple functionalities, is to enhance or at least retain the functionalities of different components of materials. However, this ideal scenario is often deteriorated at the interface of the heterogeneous nanostructures due to lattice mismatches, resulting in downgraded performance in most hybrid nanomaterials. Here, we report that there is a narrow window in controlling temperature in a Lewis acid-base reaction process to facilitate epitaxial alignment during the synthesis of hybrid nanomaterials. We demonstrate a perfectly fused NaYF4:Yb, Tm@ZnO heterogeneous nanostructure, in which the semiconductor ZnO shell can be epitaxially grown onto lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles. By achieving a matched crystal lattice, the interface defects and crystalline grain boundaries are minimized to enable more efficient energy transfer from the upconversion nanoparticles to the semiconductor, resulting in both enhanced upconversion luminescence intensity and superior photoelectrochemical properties. This strategy provides an outstanding approach to endow lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles with versatile properties.
Enhancing Upconversion Emissions of Er 3+ /tm 3+ /yb 3+ Tridoped (nay(wo 4 ) 2 /YF 3 ) Through TiO 2 Coating and Bi 3+ Doping and Its Photocatalytic Applications

Abstract:Enhanced upconversion property is important for the improvement of photocatalytic activity in the TiO2 based near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysts. Herein, an excellent NIR photocatalyst of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+/Bi3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2/YF3) (ETYB-NTY) was synthesized with a multi-stage upconversion nanocrystal formation process. It is found that TiO2 coatings not only provide photocatalytic activity, but also improve the upconversion emission intensity, which is further enhanced greatly by the doped Bi3+ ions. Under NIR irradiations, ETYB-NTY possesses better photocatalytic activities compared to Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2/YF3) and Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2), since more (OH)-O-center dot and O-2(center dot-) radicals can be produced by the much stronger UV (364 and 380 nm) and violet (409 nm) upconversion emissions in ETYB-NTY. There are also clear improvements for ETYB-NTY in degradation of methyl orange, salicylic acid, and the leachate from incineration plant under UV-vis-NIR irradiation. ETYB-NTY is a novel NIR photo catalyst with special structure and enhanced upconversion property, which has promising applications in organic pollution treatment and solar energy utilization. Abstract:Using nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the capping agent, β-NaYF4 upconversion microcrystals (UCMCs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal synthesis method. Systematic investigations were conducted to evaluate the influence of NTA/Ln molar ratio, NaF/Ln molar ratio, and pH on the morphology, size, and crystal phase characteristics of the UCMCs. Multiple characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), were employed to elucidate these effects. The experimental findings reveal that these parameters exert a substantial influence on the morphology and size of the UCMCs, with the crystal phase alterations primarily governed by variations in the NaF/Ln molar ratio. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration of the growth mechanism of UCMCs was undertaken based on the modulation of reaction time. The emission spectra of the synthesized UCMCs were meticulously investigated, unveiling that microcrystals exhibiting larger size and enhanced crystallinity display more pronounced luminescent properties. Comparative analysis with UCMCs synthesized using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium citrate (Na3Cit) as capping agents, which are extensively applied in diverse fields, demonstrated the superior luminescence properties of the newly obtained NTA-UCMCs. In addition, NTA-UCMCs were also employed for the fabrication of transparent and flexible fluorescent films. This research thus presents a novel approach for the synthesis of highly luminescent UCMCs, holding promise for various applications in practical contexts.

Abstract:A novel single-source precursor NaGd(TFA)4 (diglyme) (TFA=trifluoroacetate) was synthesized, characterized thoroughly, and used to obtain the hexagonal phase of NaGdF4 nanoparticles as an efficient matrix for lanthanide-doped upconverting nanocrystals (NCs) that convert near-infrared radiation into shorter-wavelength UV/visible light. These NCs were then used to prepare well-characterized TiO2@NaGdF4:Yb(3+),Tm(3+) nanocomposites to extend the absorption range of the TiO2 photocatalyst from the UV to the IR region. While the visible/near IR part of the photoluminescent spectra remains almost unaffected by the presence of TiO2, the UV part is strongly quenched due to the absorption of TiO2 above its gap at approximately 380 nm by energy transfer or FRET. Preliminary results on the photocatalytic activity of the above obtained nanocomposites are presented.

Abstract:New UV–Vis–NIR light responsive Er/Tm/Yb/Y2O3-SiC composites are designed by coupling different structured Er/Tm/Yb/Y2O3 upconversion luminescence materials (UCLMs) with 3C-SiC ultrafine nanocrystals (NCs) and explored as an efficient photocatalytic material. The Er/Tm/Yb/Y2O3 UCLMs can convert near-infrared (NIR) light into visible light which can be absorbed by 3C-SiC NCs, thus extend the optical responsive range of the photocatalysts to NIR light region. The structure effect of UCLMs on their upconversion luminescence performance is explored, indicating that the chain-like Er/Tm/Yb/Y2O3 UCLMs display much more preferable luminescence activity than flake-like structure. Compared with pure 3C-SiC NCs, both the two hybrid structures offer excellent performance in catalyzing decomposition of methylene blue (MB) under illumination of NIR light as well as UV–Vis–NIR light. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of chain-like Er/Tm/Yb/Y2O3-SiC composites is better than that of the flake-like composites, profiting from the high light absorption efficiency induced by the multiple reflection-absorption effect. It is anticipated that this work provides new insights into the fabrication of photocatalysts with excellent light responses to a broader spectral range.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 core-shell composites were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The highly crystalline TiO2 shell can be uniformly coated onto lanthanide-doped NaYF4 microrods and nanorods under mild conditions without calcination. The thickness of the TiO2 shell can be tuned by varying the ratio of fluoride rods and Ti precursors. The microcomposite with a moderate TiO2 shell shows excellent photocatalytic activity under near-infrared irradiation.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a promising pathway to degrade pollutants in water. Although numerous photocatalysts have been developed to remove organic dyes in water, the degradation of antibiotics is still a perplexing problem due to their excellent stability. The hybrid photocatalyst upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP)/metal–organic framework (MOF) has been developed with the aim to utilize the full solar light. However, the low upconversion efficiency results in an unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity. A novel core–shell–shell UCNP, NaYF4:Yb/Tm@NaYF4:Yb@NaYF4 (Tm@Yb@Y), is synthesized to increase the upconversion efficiency. Both the active and inert shells are introduced in the UCNPs, which not only are favorable to weaken the surface quenching but also are helpful to prompt the energy transfer back. As a result, the UC emission intensity is greatly improved as compared with Tm or Tm@Yb. Then, Tm@Yb@Y is combined with NH2-MIL101(Fe) (NMF) to fabricate the novel photocatalyst Tm@Yb@Y/NMF. It exhibits an excellent photocatalytic activity to degrade rhodamine B (RhB), levofloxacin (OFL), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The contribution of near infrared (NIR) light and inert shell on the whole photocatalysis is considered. The possible photodegradation mechanism is proposed according to the photoelectrochemical measurements, free radical and hole trapping experiments, and pump power dependence of upconversion emission intensities. The outstanding performance of Tm@Yb@Y/NMF should be attributed to the synergistic effect including the wider light absorption range, increased UC emission intensity, and feasible electron–hole separation.

Abstract:Efficient near-infrared (NIR) upconversion Yb and Tm codoped NaYF4 nanocrystal reporter was prepared by synthesis at room temperature via wet-chemical route and then heat-treatment at elevated temperature. Several parameters such as pH value of solution, sequence of reactant addition, and annealing temperature, which have strong impacts on the structure and morphology of the nanoparticles, were investigated. Upconversion mechanism and factors that affect the fluorescent performance of the NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles were discussed. Besides the strong emission around 474nm, a much more intense emission at about 800nm was observed emitted by NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles under 980nm IR excitation. This strong NIR emission is favorable for the highly sensitive label used in biological detection or in vivo NIR fluorescence imaging.

Abstract:Near-infrared to ultraviolet multiphoton upconversion photoluminescence in ultrasmall Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped CaF2 nanocrystals (similar to 6.7 nm in size) was observed and further significantly enhanced by growing an active shell of NaYF4:Yb3+. Owing to the active shell, the lanthanide emitters inside the core are effectively prevented from the surface quenchers, and the excitation energy is absorbed more efficiently via the additional luminescence sensitizer Yb3+ embedded in the shell. The details of underlying physics were investigated and discussed. The results present a good ultrasmall luminescent material system for achieving efficient multiphoton upconversion, which shows great potential in versatile industrial and biological applications. Abstract:It has been reported that coupling TiO2 with rare earth upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) is an efficient strategy to significantly improve photocatalytic activity of TiO2. However, the rare earth materials are scarcity and cost, and the synthesis process of UCNCs using the rare earth materials is complicated. In the present study, we have designed a new approach using a rare earth-free upconversion nanocrystal (REF-UCNCs) as upconversion luminescent material to replace the rare earth UCNCs. A novel nanocomposite photocatalyst of REF-UCNCs@P25: Mo/GN was developed for the first time. Based on the designed structure, the REF-UCNCs, Mo-doping, and GN (graphene) have a synergistic effect that can improve catalytic activity of P25 significantly. The results of photocatalytic experiments using RhB as a model pollutant under simulated solar light irradiation show that the photocatalytic efficiency of the as-prepared catalyst is 3-folds higher than that of benchmark substance P25. This work provides a new strategy for efficiently improving catalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts by coupling with REF-UCNCs. This approach is facile and low-cost which can be widely applied for modification of semiconductor photocatalysts and facilitates their applications in environmental protection issues using solar light.
Enhancement of fluorescent emission in photonic crystal film and application in photocatalysis

Abstract:Fluorescent photonic crystal films composed of monodisperse NaYF4:15Yb,0.5Tm@SiO2 (where 15 and 0.5 represent the mole percentage of reactants) core-shell spheres were successfully fabricated and applied in photocatalysis. The core-shell spheres were prepared using a modified Stober method, and fluorescent photonic crystal films were fabricated via a simple self-assembly method. The morphologies, structures and upconversion fluorescent properties of the fluorescent photonic crystal films with different photonic band gaps were characterized. Moreover, their photocatalytic capability in decomposing rhodamine B using near-infrared light was studied. Results indicate that the band edge effect plays a critical role in the enhancement of short wave emission intensity of fluorescent photonic crystal films. Specifically, in comparison to the reference sample without a band edge effect, the 363 nm emission intensity was enhanced by 5.97 times, while the percentage of UV upconversion emission was improved by 6.23%. In addition, the 451 nm emission intensity was enhanced by 5.81 times, and the percentage of visible upconversion emission was improved by 8.88%. Furthermore, fluorescent photonic crystal films with enhanced short wave emission exhibited great photocatalytic performance in the degradation of rhodamine B aqueous solutions under near-infrared light.

Abstract:Ytterbium, thulium (Yb3+ ,Tm3+ ) co-doped β-NaYF4 upconversion nanocrystals (U-NCs) were synthesized by a convenient hydrothermal method using sodium citrate as a capping agent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that NCs phase structures were dependent on reaction time. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the morphology of U-NCs could be controlled by adjusting the concentration of sodium citrate added in the hydrothermal reaction. Moreover, the emission spectra of the U-NCs were investigated to evaluate upconversion efficiency. Strong luminescence intensity of the U-NCs was observed after tuned with optimized concentration of sodium citrate. Furthermore, the U-NCs were incubated with MCF-7 cells at 37°C for 24 h. Under irradiation of a 980 nm laser, the upconversion blue emission of the NCs in MCF-7 cells can be clearly observed through a confocal microscope with an upconversion imaging system and high quality upconversion luminescence images can be acquired. Thus, prepared β-NaYF4 :Yb3+ ,Tm3+ NCs provide us with highly efficient luminescent probes which can be applied for diverse bio-applications.
Near-Infrared Photocatalysts of Bivo4/Caf2:Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+ with Enhanced Upconversion Properties

Abstract:Upconversion photocatalysts have the potential to absorb the near-infrared (NIR) light in solar energy and improve the photocatalytic performance. A hierarchical upconversion photocatalyst of BiVO4 (BVO)/CaF2:Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+ (CF) combined with the narrow-band semiconductor of BVO and the luminescence agent of CF to enhance upconversion properties was synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The CF particles were deposited homogeneously on the surface of the BVO/CF composite with regular dendritic structure, which led to efficient upconversion emissions. The upconversion emission intensity of the BVO/CF composite was 8 times higher than that of pure CF, through tailoring the crystal symmetry of lanthanide ions by Bi3+ ions. The upconverted ultraviolet (361 and 379 nm), violet (408 nm), and blue (485 nm) light was able to excite BVO for photocatalysis in BVO/CF under NIR irradiation, which improved the degradation rate of methyl orange (MO).
Hexadecylpyridinium Chloride Mediated Hydrothermal Synthesis of NaYF₄:Yb, Er Nanocrystal and Their Luminescent Properties

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals with uniform size and hydrophilic surface have potential applications in biological medical engineering. In this study, hydrophilic NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres were synthesized via hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mediated hydrothermal process. The synthesized NaYF₄:Yb, Er upconversion nanospheres (UCNSs) were characterized by various characterization methods. Results showed that the synthesized UCNSs exhibited a uniform sphere-like structure with average diameter of ~250 nm. The surface of UCNSs was captured by CPC molecule indicating hydrophilic properties of UCNSs. The spherical UCNSs composed of mixed phase (α+β) NaYF₄ nanocrystals. This is the novel study for synthesis of NaYF₄:Ln3+ crystal employing CPC as ligand. Moreover, the effect of CPC concentration on synthesis of UCNSs was investigated by comparatively studying morphology, crystal phase and luminescent properties of desired sample prepared under different experimental conditions. It was found that high concentrations of CPC ligands were more favorable for forming NaYF₄ crystal nanospheres with morphology that is more regular, have smoother surface, with higher crystallinity and better upconversion fluorescent properties. The possible growing mechanism was proposed and growing of NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres followed the classical Ostwald ripening process.

Abstract:An Er3+-sensitized system with a high response to 1550 nm radiation in the second near-infrared window (NIR II) has been considered for a new class of potential candidates for applications in bio-imaging and advanced anti-counterfeiting, yet the achievement of highly efficient upconversion emission still remains a challenge. Here, we constructed a novel Er3+-sensitized core-shell-shell upconversion nanostructure with a Yb3+-enriched core as the emitting layer. This designed nanostructure allows the Yb3+ emitting layer to more efficiently trap and lock excitation energy by combining the interfacial energy transfer (IET) from the shell (Er3+) to the core (Yb3+), high activator Yb3+ content, and minimized energy back-transfer. As a result, the NIR II emission at 1000 nm is remarkably enhanced with a high quantum yield (QY) of 11.5%. Based on this trap and lock-in effect of the excitation energy in the Yb3+-enriched core, highly efficient 1550 nm-responsive visible and NIR upconversion emissions are also achieved by co-doping with other activator ions (e.g., Ho3+ and Tm3+). Our research provides a new functional design for improving NIR II-responsive upconversion luminescence, which is significant for developing practical applications.

Abstract:Benefiting from structural oxygen incorporation and crystalline structure formation through the molten salt assisted treatment of oxygen‐containing precursor carbohydrazide, a singular crystalline C3N4 shows the extended absorption edge to 1400 nm and high NIR photocatalytic activity. Efficient utilization of near‐infrared (NIR) light that takes a primary percentage of the solar spectrum is of great significance for practical applications of photocatalysis. However, development of singular NIR‐based photocatalysts still remains a grand challenge. Herein, a NIR‐based crystalline carbon nitride photocatalyst is proposed by using a molten‐salt assisted protocol with carbohydrazide as the oxygen‐containing precursor. Different from the doping strategy that always leads to structural damage and crystallinity decrease, structural oxygen arising from the special precursor itself is introduced into the framework of C3N4 with highly crystalline structure formed. The n→π* excitation is therefore activated with the absorption edge extended remarkably to 1400 nm. Theoretical calculations also reveal that the local internal electric field is simultaneously generated for promoting the charge separation/migration kinetics. Benefiting from structural oxygen incorporation and crystalline structure formation, the synthesized material shows a significantly enhanced visible‐light (λ > 420 nm) hydrogen production reactivity compared with the benchmark carbon nitride, and more importantly an active NIR hydrogen generation (λ > 700 nm) and long‐wavelength overall water splitting (λ = 600 nm) capability that is rarely reported for singular photocatalysts. This work showcases an illustration of promising singular NIR photocatalysts for efficient solar fuel production.

Enhancing Upconversion Emissions of NaTm0.02YbxY0.98−xF4 Nanocrystals Through Increasing Yb3+ Doping

Abstract:By increasing the content of Yb3+ ions from 20% to 98% in NaTm0.02YbxY0.98−xF4 (x=0.2−0.98) nanocrystals with size about 10nm, the intensities of near infrared (800nm) and blue (470nm) upconversion (UC) luminescence can be enhanced by orders of 45 and 49 times, respectively, under 970nm diode laser excitation. Pump power dependence illustrated that the 800 and 470nm radiations are still two- and three-photon processes, respectively. TEM imaging showed that the enhancement is not from the change of the crystal size. Steady-state equation and the measured lifetimes indicated that the enhanced 800nm radiations can induce the enhancement of the 470nm emissions, which is in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Single anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with controllable crystallinity are prepared by a simple and readily available hydrothermal route. The crystallinity has been successfully manipulated via varying the temperature. TiO2-240 prepared at 240°C holds the highest crystallinity, i.e., the largest crystallite size of 14.2nm and the lowest lattice strain of 12.56×10−3, and the highest photocatalytic efficiency. The feasible method is also successfully applied in the synthesis of Eu3+-doped TiO2 (TiO2:Eu3+) nanoparticles. Both the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and the photoluminescence (PL) properties of the TiO2:Eu3+ intensifies obviously as the crystallinity increases. The photocatalytic activity of nanoTiO2 and PL properties of the TiO2:Eu3+ are discussed in detail from the viewpoints of crystallinity based on various characterizations. This method can be developed for the deliberate synthesis of other functional nanomaterials.
