Abstract:The ability to synthesize upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) with tailored upconversion luminescence and controlled size is of great importance for biophotonic applications. However, until now, limited success has been met to prepare bright, ultrasmall, and monodispersed β-NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs. In this work, we report on a synthetic method to produce monodisperse hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals of ultrasmall size (5.4 nm) through a precise control of the reaction temperature and the ratio of Na⁺/Ln3+/F-. We determined the optimum activator concentration of Er3+ to be 6.5 mol % for these UCNCs, yielding about a 5-fold higher upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity than the commonly used formula of NaYF₄:30% Yb3+/2% Er3+. Moreover, a thin epitaxial shell (thickness, 1.9 nm) of NaLnF₄ (Ln = Y, Gd, Lu) was grown onto these ultrasmall NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs, enhancing its UCL by about 85-, 70- and 50-fold, respectively. The achieved sub-10-nm core and core-shell hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs with enhanced UCL have strong potential applications in bioapplications such as bioimaging and biosensing.

Abstract:As a matrix material, NaYbF4 has attracted more and more attention due to its large absorption cross section and high energy transfer efficiency. In this study, lanthanide doped NaYbF4 upconversion (UC) nano-/micro-crystalline was carefully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The influence of kinds of external conditions, including reaction time, initial reaction solution pH value, organic solvents codoping, and Na+ concentration on crystalline phase, size, morphology and especially luminescent property are systematically studied and the possible formation mechanism based on PH values is emphatically proposed. The products of NaYbF4 with various morphologies range from nanospheres, microprisms, microdisks, hexagonal crown-capped shapes, hexagonal clam-like shapes and hexagonal flower-like shapes were successfully prepared. The results show that the up-conversion luminescence property is positively correlated with the slenderness ratio. Solvents codoping and Na+ concentration can greatly improve the luminescence property, especially for red emission. Impressively, the emission colors and intensities might be finely tuned through finely tuning the PH values, solvents co-doping and Na+ dosage. Furthermore, this study will be expected to contribute to the synthesis of various morphologies and improving the UC intensity of lanthanide doped crystals.

Colloidal Synthesis and Blue Based Multicolor Upconversion Emissions of Size and Composition Controlled Monodisperse Hexagonal Nayf4 : Yb,Tm Nanocrystals

Abstract:Monodisperse beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals with controlled size (25-150 nm), shape (sphere, hexagonal prism, and hexagonal plate), and composition (Yb: 20-40%, Tm: 0.2-5%) were synthesized from the thermolysis of metal trifluoroacetates in hot surfactant solutions. The upconversion (UC) of near-infrared light (980 nm) to ultra-violet (360 nm), blue (450 and 475 nm), red (650 and 695 nm) and infrared (800 nm) light in the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals has been studied by UC spectroscopy. Both the total intensity of UC emissions and the relative intensities of emissions at different wavelengths have shown a strong dependence on different particle sizes and different Tm3+ and Yb3+ concentrations. As a result, different overall output colors of UC emissions can be achieved by altering sizes and Yb3+/Tm3+ doping concentrations of the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals. The intensity-power curves of a series of samples have proved that emissions at 360 and 450 nm can be ascribed to four-photon process (1D2 to 3H6 and 1D2 to 3H4, respectively), while emissions at 475 and 650 nm are three-photon processes (1G4 to 3H6 and 1G4 to 3H4, respectively) and emissions at 695 and 800 nm are two-photon ones (3F2 to 3H6 and 3F4 to 3H6, respectively). A UC saturation effect would occur under a certain excitation intensity of the 980 nm CW diode laser for the as-obtained beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals, leading to the decrease of the slopes of the I-P curves. The results of our study also revealed that the successive transfer model instead of the cooperative sensitization model can be applied to explain the UC behaviors of the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals. Further, an unexpected stronger emissions of four-photon process at 360 and 450 nm for approximately 50 nm beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals than those for the bigger (approximately 150 nm) nanocrystals was observed and explained in terms of the effects of crystallite size, surface-to-volume ratio and homogeneity of the doping cations.

Abstract:A range of nearly monodispersed NaYF4 single-crystal nanorods, hexagonal nanoplates, and nanoparticles have been successfully prepared via a facile wet chemical technology. Varying the dopants leads to different luminescence. These as-prepared nanocrystals not only present novel room-temperature downconversion (DC) and upconversion (UC) fluorescence but can also be transparently dispersed in cyclohexane. The effects of reaction temperature and time, doped ion concentration, ratio of NaF to Ln(NO3)(3), and the reactant content on the shape, size, and crystal phase purity of the as-prepared nanocrystals have been investigated in detail. The fluorescence photos, spectra, luminescence mechanism, and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been demonstrated. For the next biolabel applications, the colloidal nanoparticles dispersed in cyclohexane have also been transferred into water by surface silane modification. For their unique DC and UC luminescence and high processability, these nanocrystals will open new avenues in biolabels, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), color displays, anti-counterfeiting, and solid-state lasers.

Abstract:A variety of α-NaYF4@YOF composites with diverse morphologies and particles sizes have been fabricated via an easy-to-operate approach. First of all, the YB(OH)4CO3 precursor was obtained by a urea-based homogeneous precipitation route. Subsequently, the uniform and well-dispersed β-NaYF4 microcrystals with a variety of crystal shapes were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. The morphology and particle size of the β-NaYF4 samples can be adjusted in a controlled manner by simply tuning the reaction temperature and time, feeding molar ratio of precursor/NaF, or total amount of the reactants. Finally, the β-NaYF4 microcrystals converted to α-NaYF4@YOF composites which inherited the morphology and dispersity of the hydrothermal products after an annealing process in air. Upon UV or NIR excitation, the as-synthesized lanthanide ions Ln3+ (Eu3+, Tb3+, Yb3+/Er3+, Yb3+/Ho3+) doped α-NaYF4@YOF samples show the intense characteristic down-conversion (DC) or up-conversion (UC) multicolor emissions. Moreover, the calcination process not only broadens the excitation range but also improves the emission efficiency of the phosphors due to the enhanced crystallintiy and formation of YOF shell. The as-synthesized Ln3+-doped luminescent materials may find potential applications in fields of color displays, optoelectronic devices, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence and Controllable Phase/shape of NaYF4:Yb/Er Crystals Through Cu2+ Ion Doping

Abstract:Hexagonal phase (β-) NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion (UC) microrods doped with Cu2+ ions were prepared via a facile solvothermal method. Simultaneous phase and shape control of NaYF4:Yb/Er crystals with enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) was successfully realized by codoping with Cu2+ ions. With an increasing Cu2+ ion concentration in the NaYF4:Yb/Er system, the crystal structure changed from a mixture of α- and β-phases to the pure β-phase and was converted into highly uniform microrods. As for the Cu2+ ion doped β-NaYF4:Yb/Er upconversion microrods, the maximum emission occurs with the sample added with 60 mol% Cu2+ ions and the UCL intensities of the green and red emissions were enhanced 37 and 25 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the possible mechanisms for the enhanced UCL of NaYF4:Yb/Er crystals were also discussed in detail. Moreover, the temperature dependent UCL properties of 60 mol% Cu2+ ion doped β-NaYF4:Yb/Er were studied under 980 nm excitation, which were temperature-sensitive over a wide temperature range from 123 K to 423 K. The change in UCL intensity influenced by temperature was discussed in detail.

Abstract:The dopant concentration of lanthanide ions plays one of the critical roles to manipulate size/morphology, photon population pathway, or luminescence color/intensity in upconversion nanoparticles (UCNCs), which have a significant effect on their application developments. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated for simultaneous size, morphology and multicolor luminescence tuning in the single doped lanthanide activator Er 3+ ion system through simply tuning the concentration of Er 3+ ions. The doping of different Er 3+ ion amounts in NaYbF 4 :Er nanocrystals can control nanoparticle size (from several hundreds to tens of nanometers) and morphology. Moreover, multicolor upconversion luminescence involving green, yellow, orange and red can be obtained in the NaYbF 4 :Er UCNCs by changing the excitation power density of 980 nm laser. Mechanistic studies reveal the size and morphology evolution process as well as saturation/cross relaxation effects induced tunable multicolor emissions. These nanocrystals have demonstrated promising potential applications in anticounterfeiting. Our results not only provide a simple and feasible route for simultaneous size/morphology control and multicolor upconversion luminescence tuning, but also can further expand the utility of UCNCs in the frontier applications ranging from optical encoding to information security.

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals with uniform size and hydrophilic surface have potential applications in biological medical engineering. In this study, hydrophilic NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres were synthesized via hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mediated hydrothermal process. The synthesized NaYF₄:Yb, Er upconversion nanospheres (UCNSs) were characterized by various characterization methods. Results showed that the synthesized UCNSs exhibited a uniform sphere-like structure with average diameter of ~250 nm. The surface of UCNSs was captured by CPC molecule indicating hydrophilic properties of UCNSs. The spherical UCNSs composed of mixed phase (α+β) NaYF₄ nanocrystals. This is the novel study for synthesis of NaYF₄:Ln3+ crystal employing CPC as ligand. Moreover, the effect of CPC concentration on synthesis of UCNSs was investigated by comparatively studying morphology, crystal phase and luminescent properties of desired sample prepared under different experimental conditions. It was found that high concentrations of CPC ligands were more favorable for forming NaYF₄ crystal nanospheres with morphology that is more regular, have smoother surface, with higher crystallinity and better upconversion fluorescent properties. The possible growing mechanism was proposed and growing of NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres followed the classical Ostwald ripening process.

Abstract:Efficient near-infrared (NIR) upconversion Yb and Tm codoped NaYF4 nanocrystal reporter was prepared by synthesis at room temperature via wet-chemical route and then heat-treatment at elevated temperature. Several parameters such as pH value of solution, sequence of reactant addition, and annealing temperature, which have strong impacts on the structure and morphology of the nanoparticles, were investigated. Upconversion mechanism and factors that affect the fluorescent performance of the NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles were discussed. Besides the strong emission around 474nm, a much more intense emission at about 800nm was observed emitted by NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles under 980nm IR excitation. This strong NIR emission is favorable for the highly sensitive label used in biological detection or in vivo NIR fluorescence imaging.

Abstract:The emerging upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) have gained substantial consideration in the field of bioanalytical as well as diagnostic applications. Therefore, great progress has been made in the synthesis and surface modification of luminescent UCNPs over the last two decades. In this paper, we have reported monodispersed and high luminescent upconversion nanoparticles NaYF4: 20%Yb3+, 2%Tm3+ have been synthesized using a solvothermal method, followed by a coating of the NaYF4 shell with a thin layer of SiO2 on the surface to afford the core-shell NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@SiO2 nanoparticles (NP@SiO2). The prepared nanoparticles were of strong upconversion fluorescent emission intensity, hexagonal phase, and with an average size of about 8 ± 1 nm, which have been characterized by luminescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that the NP@SiO2 can be used for the conjugation of fluorescent probes for various biomolecules and can find applications in cancer cell imaging and disease diagnosis.

Abstract:Using nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the capping agent, β-NaYF4 upconversion microcrystals (UCMCs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal synthesis method. Systematic investigations were conducted to evaluate the influence of NTA/Ln molar ratio, NaF/Ln molar ratio, and pH on the morphology, size, and crystal phase characteristics of the UCMCs. Multiple characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), were employed to elucidate these effects. The experimental findings reveal that these parameters exert a substantial influence on the morphology and size of the UCMCs, with the crystal phase alterations primarily governed by variations in the NaF/Ln molar ratio. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration of the growth mechanism of UCMCs was undertaken based on the modulation of reaction time. The emission spectra of the synthesized UCMCs were meticulously investigated, unveiling that microcrystals exhibiting larger size and enhanced crystallinity display more pronounced luminescent properties. Comparative analysis with UCMCs synthesized using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium citrate (Na3Cit) as capping agents, which are extensively applied in diverse fields, demonstrated the superior luminescence properties of the newly obtained NTA-UCMCs. In addition, NTA-UCMCs were also employed for the fabrication of transparent and flexible fluorescent films. This research thus presents a novel approach for the synthesis of highly luminescent UCMCs, holding promise for various applications in practical contexts.

Abstract:Monodisperse, oil-dispersible beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) up-conversion (UC) luminescent nanospheres (NPs) have been successfully synthesized. The as-prepared NPs show high size-uniformity without any size-selection process, and the sizes of the NPs can be tuned in the range of 18 nm-45 nm, which are well suitable for biolabels. The NPs are thoroughly characterized and a growth mechanism is proposed. By co-doping Yb-Er or Yb-Tm, the as-prepared NPs can show bright green or blue UC luminescence under the irradiation of a 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser, and the UC luminescence can be obviously enhanced by constructing a NaYF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4 core/shell structure. Furthermore, the hydrophobic UC nanospheres (UCNPs) are converted into water-soluble by a robust ligand-exchange pathway with poly(acrylic acid). The presence of free carboxylic acid groups on their surfaces not only results in high solubility in water, but also allows further conjugation with biomolecules such as antigens, antibodies and oligonucleotides, which pave the way for potential bio-applications of the UCNPs.
Synthesis and Upconversion Luminescence of Lu2o3:Yb3+,Tm3+ Nanocrystals

Abstract:Lutetium oxide nanocrystals codoped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ were synthesized by the reverse-like co-precipitation method, using ammonium hydrogen carbonate as precipitant. Effects of the Tm3+, Yb3+ molar fractions and calcination temperature on the structural and upconversion luminescent properties of the Lu2O3 nanocrystals were investigated. The XRD results show that all the prepared nanocrystals can be readily indexed to pure cubic phase of Lu2O3 and indicate good crystallinity. The experimental results show that concentration quenching occurs when the mole fraction of Tm3+ is above 0.2%. The optimal Tm3+ and Yb3+ doped molar fractions are 0.2% and 2%, respectively. The strong blue (490 nm) and the weak red (653 nm) emissions from the prepared nanocrystals were observed under 980 nm laser excitation, and attributed to the 1G4 → 3H6 and 1G4 → 3F4 transitions of Tm3+, respectively. Power-dependent study reveals that the 1G4 levels of Tm3+ can be populated by three-step energy transfer process. The upconversion emission intensities of 490 nm and 653 nm increase gradually with the increase of calcination temperature. The enhancement of the upconversion luminescence is suggested to be the consequence of reducing number of OH− groups and the enlarged nanocrystal size.
Preparation and characterization of NaYF4:Er3+,Tm3+@NaYF4:Ce3+,Tb3+ microcrystals with dual-mode emissions at the single-particle level

Abstract:Under hydrothermal environment, we synthesized lanthanide ions doped sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF4:Er,Tm@NaYF4:Ce,Tb) luminescent microcrystals via an epitaxial growth technique. The structure and morphology of these microcrystals were examined by SEM, TEM, EDS and XRD measurements. These particles show dual-mode emissions with red upconversion (UC) and green down conversion (DC) as single particles level. The mean length and diameter of these microparticles increase from 0.43 to 2.26 μm and from 1.33 to 1.86 μm, respectively. Most interestingly, the photoluminescence properties of NaYF4:Er,Tm@NaYF4:Ce,Tb phosphor crystals are highly dependent on the crystallite size. The microcrystals fluoresce emit dual-mode emissions when they are solid or dispersed in solvents. Benefiting its intensive fluorescence and uniform morphology, these materials hold great potential for security and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Influences of Growth Durations on Characteristics of NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) Upconversion Materials

Abstract:NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) upconversion materials were synthesized by the simple hydrothermal method. Growth duration was varied from 4h to 12h under a growth temperature of 150oC. The structural, optical and surface morphology characteristics of the NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) UC materials were investigated. The XRD and SEM results illustrated that the NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) materials were transformed from the multiple phases (hexagonal and cubic) to the single-phase (hexagonal prism) as growth duration being longer than 8h with the average diameter and length of these prisms being about 0.5 μm and 2 μm, respectively. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) emits at peaks of 450 nm (1D2→ 3F4), 475 nm (1G4→3H6), 647 nm (1G4→3F4) and 697 nm (3F3→3H6), with the highest emission belonging to NaYF4:(Yb,Tm) grown for 8h. Synthesis and Upconversion Luminescence of High-Quality Water-Soluble NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ Nanoclusters

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoclusters were prepared using a facile solvothermal method. The structures and morphologies of the products were investigated using an X-ray powder diffractometer and a transmission electron microscope. Modified by the capping agent of poly(acrylic acid), the as-prepared NaYF4 NCs show excellent water solubility. Under 980-nm excitation, the aqueous solution of the sample displayed a bright green upconversion (UC) fluorescence. The luminescence dynamics were further studied based on the UC excitation pathways and the emission processes. Such water soluble UC samples may find application in the field of biological imaging.

Abstract:Poor water-solubility and biocompatibility are the biggest obstacles for the bioapplications of upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs). In this work, a facile solvothermal approach was developed for the one-pot synthesis of monodisperse and water-soluble β-NaYF4 UCNPs by employing poly(acrylic acid, sodium salt) (PAAs) as the capping reagent. The as-prepared UCNPs were thoroughly characterized and a possible reaction mechanism is proposed, which indicates that PAAs plays a crucial role for the shape and phase evolution of the NaYF4 UCNPs. More importantly, each multidentate PAA can tightly bind to the UCNPs surface through multiple –COO− groups, while an abundance of uncoordinated carboxyl groups on the polymer chain extend into the solution, making the UCNPs highly water-soluble. The presence of free carboxyl groups on the surfaces also facilitates the conjugation of the UCNPs with various biomolecules, which paves the way for further bio-applications. As a proof-of-concept model, transferrin was covalently linked to β-NaYF4:Yb,Er to form the transferrin–UCNPs conjugates, which have been successfully applied to the high-contrast fluorescent imaging and detection of HeLa cells. Possessing the advantages of good biocompatibility and inherent high upconversion efficiency, our directly synthesized β-NaYF4 UCNPs exhibit great potential as excellent bio-probes for in vitro or in vivo imaging, detection and diagnosis.

Studies in vitro on the effects of rhein on the chemotaxis of human leukocytes.

Abstract:Rhein (R: 1,8-dihydroxy-3-carboxyanthraquinone) is the active metabolite of the drug diacetylrhein (DAR), an anthraquinone molecule which has recently been proposed for the long-term treatment of osteoarthrosis. Its action mechanism in rheumatic pathology has not been fully explained. It is known that DAR, while not inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins, inhibits certain proteolytic enzymes, and acts on phlogistic cells by lysosomal enzymic and superoxide-anion modifications. Moreover DAR modifies phagocytic functions and the motility of cells. This paper is a contribution to the clarification of the last point, namely the effect of rhein on cell motility. It reports that in vitro no effect of R on random migration was found, but instead a double inhibiting effect on chemotaxis (i.e. a low-dosage and a high-dosage effect). Furthermore, R did not modify the inhibition or induce modification of chemotaxis by vinblastine. Finally R cancelled the stimulating effect of ionic potassium. The results thus indicate that R acts on the chemotaxis of the leukocytes with a complex action at different doses. The action mechanism is probably due to a membrane effect, since rhein (R) did not modify the chemotaxis-inhibiting activity of vinblastine but did interfere with the stimulating effect of K+.

Abstract:We synthesized the uniform core-shell microstructured compounds with hexagonal phase NaYF₄:Er/Yb microrods as the core and hexagonal phase NaLnF₄ (NaYbF₄, NaLuF₄:Yb/Tm, NaYF₄:Yb/Er, NaYF₄:Eu) as the shell based on the hydrothermal reaction. These microscale core-shell structures provided a platform for the spatially confining optical process while possessing high luminescence efficiency. The thickness of the shell could be controlled by adjusting the amounts of shell precursor, which significantly affected the intensity of the shell dopant ions emission and the emission color of core-shell upconversion luminescence (UCL). The uniform NaYF₄@NaLnF₄ (Ln = Y, Lu, Yb) microrods, with a series of rare-earth ions doped into the core and shell layer at various doping concentrations, achieved color-tuning of the upconversion (UC) emission and dual-mode emission at the single-microcrystal level, thus allowing the efficient utilization of core-shell microcrystals in the photonics and security labeling. This study suggests a new class of luminescent materials in the microscopic field.
