Abstract:In the paper, we provide an effective criterion for the Lipschitz equivalence of two-branch Cantor sets and three-branch Cantor sets by studying the irreducibility of polynomials. We also find that any two Cantor sets are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if their contraction vectors are equivalent provided one of the contraction vectors is homogeneous.

Abstract:For sets $A, B\subset \mathbb N$, their sumset is $A + B := \{a+b: a\in A, b\in B\}$. If we cannot write a set $C$ as $C = A+B$ with $|A|, |B|\geq 2$, then we say that $C$ is $\textit{irreducible}$. The question of whether a given set $C$ is irreducible arises naturally in additive combinatorics. Equivalently, we can formulate this question as one about the irreducibility of boolean polynomials, which has been discussed in previous work by K. H. Kim and F. W. Roush (2005) and Y. Shitov (2014). We prove results about the irreducibility of polynomials and power series over the max-min semiring, a natural generalization of the boolean polynomials. We use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to prove that almost all polynomials are irreducible over the max-min semiring, generalizing work of Y. Shitov (2014) and proving a 2011 conjecture by D. L. Applegate, M. Le Brun, and N. J. A. Sloane. Furthermore, we use measure-theoretic methods and apply Borel's result on normal numbers to prove that almost all power series are asymptotically irreducible over the max-min semiring. This result generalizes work of E. Wirsing (1953).

Abstract:Polynomial reduction is one of the main tools in computational algebra with innumerable applications in many areas, both pure and applied. Since many years both the theory and an efficient design of the related algorithm have been solidly established. This paper presents a definition of the generic concept of polynomial reduction structure, studies its features and highlights the aspects needed in order to grant and to efficiently test the main properties (Noetherianity, confluence, ideal membership). The most significant aspect of this analysis is a negative reappraisal of the role of the notion of term ordering which is usually considered a central and crucial tool in the theory. In fact, as it was already established in the computer science context in relation with termination of algorithms, most of the properties can be obtained simply considering a well founded order, while the classical requirement that it be preserved by multiplication is irrelevant. The last part of the paper shows how the polynomial basis concepts present in literature are interpreted in our language and their properties are consequences of the general results established in the first part of the paper.

Abstract:This paper investigates whether or not polynomials that are irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Z}$ can remain irreducible under substitution by all quadratic polynomials. It answers this question in the negative in the degree 2 and 3 cases and provides families of examples in both the affirmative and the negative categories in the degree 4 case. Finally this paper explores what happens in higher degree cases, providing a family of examples in the negative category and offering a conjectured family for the positive category.

Abstract:A classical tool in the study of real closed fields are the fields $K((G))$ of generalized power series (i.e., formal sums with well-ordered support) with coefficients in a field $K$ of characteristic 0 and exponents in an ordered abelian group $G$. In this paper we enlarge the family of ordinals $\alpha$ of non-additively principal Cantor degree for which $K((\mathbb{R}^{\le 0}))$ admits irreducibles of order type $\alpha$ far beyond $\alpha=\omega^2 $ and $\alpha = \omega^3$ known prior to this work.

On irreducibility of prefixed algebraic sets in moduli spaces of prime degree polynomials

Abstract:Consider the moduli space, $\mathcal{M}_{d}$, of degree $d \geq 2$ polynomials over $\mathbb{C}$, with a marked critical point. Given $k \geq 0,\; p$ an odd prime, we show that the set $\Sigma_{k,1,p}$ of conjugacy classes of degree $p$ polynomials, for which the marked critical point is strictly $(k,1)$-preperiodic, is an irreducible quasi-affine algebraic set. Irreducibility of these sets was conjectured by Milnor, and has been proved for $p=3$ by Buff, Epstein and Koch. We prove that the subspaces of $\Sigma_{k,1,p}$, that arise by varying the ramification index of the marked critical point all the way up to the unicritical case, are all irreducible subvarieties. Finally, using the irreducibility of $\Sigma_{k,1,p}$ we give a new and short proof of the fact that the set of all unicritical points of $\Sigma_{k,1,p}$ form one Galois orbit under the action of absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:This paper continues to study the connection between reverse mathematics and Weihrauch reducibility. In particular, we study the problems formed from Maltsev's theorem on the order types of countable ordered groups. Solomon showed that the theorem is equivalent to $\mathsf{\Pi_1^1}$-$\mathsf{CA_0}$, the strongest of the big five subsystems of second order arithmetic. We show that the strength of the theorem comes from having a dense linear order without endpoints in its order type. Then, we show that for the related Weihrauch problem to be strong enough to be equivalent to $\mathsf{\hat{WF}}$ (the analog problem of $\mathsf{\Pi_1^1}$-$\mathsf{CA_0}$), an order-preserving function is necessary in the output. Without the order-preserving function, the problems are very much to the side compared to analog problems of the big five.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an SL(n)-invariant division of SL(n)-invariant polynomials by establishing an admissible order among the invariant polynomials in normal form. The invariant division leads to an invariant Gröbner basis theory. The invariant division is closely related to multivariate coordinate polynomial division. This feature leads to a proof of the result that if f1,..., fk are SL(n,K)-invariant where K is an arbitrary field, possibly of positive characteristic, then the invariant ideal generated by them is the intersection of the ideal generated by the fi in the polynomial ring of coordinates with the algebra of invariants.

Abstract:We extend the concept of effective reducibility between statements of set theory with ordinal Turing machines (OTMs) explored in earlier work for $\Pi_{2}$-statements to statements of arbitrary quantifier complexity in prenex normal form and use this to compare various fundamental set-theoretical principles with respect to effective reducibility. This is a preliminary note, in which many arguments are merely sketched, soon to be replaced by a more elaborate version.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $P=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$. The technique of elimination by substitution is based on discovering a coherently $Z=(z_1,\dots,z_s)$-separating tuple of polynomials $(f_1,\dots,f_s)$ in an ideal $I$, i.e., on finding polynomials such that $f_i = z_i - h_i$ with $h_i \in K[X \setminus Z]$. Here we elaborate on this technique in the case when $P$ is non-negatively graded. The existence of a coherently $Z$-separating tuple is reduced to solving several $P_0$-module membership problems. Best separable re-embeddings, i.e., isomorphisms $P/I \longrightarrow K[X \setminus Z] / (I \cap K[X \setminus Z])$ with maximal $\#Z$, are found degree-by-degree. They turn out to yield optimal re-embeddings in the positively graded case. Viewing $P_0 \longrightarrow P/I$ as a fibration over an affine space, we show that its fibers allow optimal $Z$-separating re-embeddings, and we provide a criterion for a fiber to be isomorphic to an affine space. In the last section we introduce a new technique based on the solution of a unimodular matrix problem which enables us to construct automorphisms of $P$ such that additional $Z$-separating re-embeddings are possible. One of the main outcomes is an algorithm which allows us to explicitly compute a homogeneous isomorphism between $P/I$ and a non-negatively graded polynomial ring if $P/I$ is regular.

Abstract:In the framework of computational complexity and in an effort to define a more natural reduction for problems of equivalence, we investigate the recently introduced kernel reduction, a reduction that operates on each element of a pair independently. This paper details the limitations and uses of kernel reductions. We show that kernel reductions are weaker than many-one reductions and provide conditions under which complete problems exist. Ultimately, the number and size of equivalence classes can dictate the existence of a kernel reduction. We leave unsolved the unconditional existence of a complete problem under polynomial-time kernel reductions for the standard complexity classes.

Abstract:We study logical reduction (factorization) of relations into relations of lower arity by Boolean or relative products that come from applying conjunctions and existential quantifiers to predicates, i.e. by primitive positive formulas of predicate calculus. Our algebraic framework unifies natural joins and data dependencies of database theory and relational algebra of clone theory with the bond algebra of C.S. Peirce. We also offer new constructions of reductions, systematically study irreducible relations and reductions to them, and introduce a new characteristic of relations, ternarity, that measures their `complexity of relating' and allows to refine reduction results. In particular, we refine Peirce's controversial reduction thesis, and show that reducibility behavior is dramatically different on finite and infinite domains.

Abstract:We identify a notion of reducibility between predicates, called instance reducibility, which commonly appears in reverse constructive mathematics. The notion can be generally used to compare and classify various principles studied in reverse constructive mathematics (formal Church's thesis, Brouwer's Continuity principle and Fan theorem, Excluded middle, Limited principle, Function choice, Markov's principle, etc.). We show that the instance degrees form a frame, i.e., a complete lattice in which finite infima distribute over set-indexed suprema. They turn out to be equivalent to the frame of upper sets of truth values, ordered by the reverse Smyth partial order. We study the overall structure of the lattice: the subobject classifier embeds into the lattice in two different ways, one monotone and the other antimonotone, and the $\lnot\lnot$-dense degrees coincide with those that are reducible to the degree of Excluded middle. We give an explicit formulation of instance degrees in a relative realizability topos, and call these extended Weihrauch degrees, because in Kleene-Vesley realizability the $\lnot\lnot$-dense modest instance degrees correspond precisely to Weihrauch degrees. The extended degrees improve the structure of Weihrauch degrees by equipping them with computable infima and suprema, an implication, the ability to control access to parameters and computation of results, and by generally widening the scope of Weihrauch reducibility.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of exceptional type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. This paper continues a long-standing effort to classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$. Having previously completed the classification when $p$ is sufficiently large, we focus here on the case that $p$ is bad for $G$. We classify the connected reductive subgroups of $G$ which are not $G$-completely reducible, whose simple components have rank at least $3$. For each such subgroup $X$, we determine the action of $X$ on the adjoint module $L(G)$ and on a minimal non-trivial $G$-module, and the connected centraliser of $X$ in $G$. As corollaries we obtain information on: subgroups which are maximal among connected reductive subgroups; products of commuting $G$-completely reducible subgroups; subgroups with trivial connected centraliser; and subgroups which act indecomposably on an adjoint or minimal module for $G$.

Irreducibility properties of Carlitz' binomial coefficients for algebraic function fields

Abstract:We study the class of univariate polynomials $\beta_k(X)$, introduced by Carlitz, with coefficients in the algebraic function field $\mathbb F_q(t)$ over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. It is implicit in the work of Carlitz that these polynomials form a $\mathbb F_q[t]$-module basis of the ring $\text{Int}(\mathbb F_q[t]) = \{f \in \mathbb F_q(t)[X] \mid f(\mathbb F_q[t]) \subseteq \mathbb F_q[t]\}$ of integer-valued polynomials on the polynomial ring $\mathbb F_q[t]$. This stands in close analogy to the famous fact that a $\mathbb Z$-module basis of the ring $\text{Int}(\mathbb Z)$ is given by the binomial polynomials $\binom{X}{k}$. We prove, for $k = q^s$, where $s$ is a non-negative integer, that $\beta_k$ is irreducible in $\text{Int}(\mathbb F_q[t])$ and that it is even absolutely irreducible, that is, all of its powers $\beta_k^m$ with $m>0$ factor uniquely as products of irreducible elements of this ring. As we show, this result is optimal in the sense that $\beta_k$ is not even irreducible if $k$ is not a power of $q$.
