Abstract:For a non-constant complex rational function $P$, the lemniscate of $P$ is defined as the set of points $z\in \mathbb C$ such that $\vert P(z)\vert =1$. The lemniscate of $P$ coincides with the set of real points of the algebraic curve given by the equation $L_P(x,y)=0$, where $L_P(x,y)$ is the numerator of the rational function $P(x+iy)\overline{ P}(x-iy)-1.$ In this paper, we study the following two questions: under what conditions two lemniscates have a common component, and under what conditions the algebraic curve $L_P(x,y)=0$ is irreducible. In particular, we provide a sharp bound for the number of complex solutions of the system $\vert P_1(z)\vert =\vert P_2(z)\vert =1$, where $P_1$ and $P_2$ are rational functions.

Abstract:To each generic complex polynomial $p(z)$ there is associated a labeled binary tree (here referred to as a "lemniscate tree") that encodes the topological type of the graph of $|p(z)|$. The branching structure of the lemniscate tree is determined by the configuration (i.e., arrangement in the plane) of the singular components of those level sets $|p(z)|=t$ passing through a critical point. In this paper, we address the question "How many branches appear in a typical lemniscate tree?" We answer this question first for a lemniscate tree sampled uniformly from the combinatorial class and second for the lemniscate tree arising from a random polynomial generated by i.i.d. zeros. From a more general perspective, these results take a first step toward a probabilistic treatment (within a specialized setting) of Arnold's program of enumerating algebraic Morse functions.

On the Shapes of Rational Lemniscates

Abstract:A rational lemniscate is a level set of $|r|$ where $r: \hat{\mathbb{C}} \rightarrow \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ is rational. We prove that any planar Euler graph can be approximated, in a strong sense, by a homeomorphic rational lemniscate. This generalizes Hilbert's lemniscate theorem; he proved that any Jordan curve can be approximated (in the same strong sense) by a polynomial lemniscate that is also a Jordan curve. As consequences, we obtain a sharp quantitative version of the classical Runge's theorem on rational approximation, and we give a new result on the approximation of planar continua by Julia sets of rational maps.

Abstract:In the paper, we provide an effective criterion for the Lipschitz equivalence of two-branch Cantor sets and three-branch Cantor sets by studying the irreducibility of polynomials. We also find that any two Cantor sets are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if their contraction vectors are equivalent provided one of the contraction vectors is homogeneous.

Abstract:A polynomial lemniscate is a curve in the complex plane defined by $\{z \in \mathbb{C}:|p(z)|=t\}$. Erdös, Herzog, and Piranian posed the extremal problem of determining the maximum length of a lemniscate $\Lambda=\{ z \in \mathbb{C}:|p(z)|=1\}$ when $p$ is a monic polynomial of degree $n$. In this paper, we study the length and topology of a random lemniscate whose defining polynomial has independent Gaussian coefficients. In the special case of the Kac ensemble we show that the length approaches a nonzero constant as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We also show that the average number of connected components is asymptotically $n$, and we observe a positive probability (independent of $n$) of a giant component occurring.

Abstract:A classically studied geometric property associated to a complex polynomial p is the inradius (the radius of the largest inscribed disk) of its (filled) lemniscate Λ ≔ { z ∈ ℂ : | p ( z ) | < 1 } . In this paper, we study the lemniscate inradius when the defining polynomial p is random, namely, with the zeros of p sampled independently from a compactly supported probability measure μ . If the negative set of the logarithmic potential U μ generated by μ is non-empty, then the inradius is bounded from below by a positive constant with overwhelming probability (as the degree n of p tends to infinity). Moreover, the inradius has a deterministic limit if the negative set of U μ additionally contains the support of μ . We also provide conditions on μ guaranteeing that the lemniscate is contained in a union of n exponentially small disks with overwhelming probability. This leads to a partial solution to a (deterministic) problem concerning the area of lemniscates posed by Erdös, Herzog, and Piranian. On the other hand, when the zeros are sampled independently and uniformly from the unit circle, then we show that the inradius converges in distribution to a random variable taking values in ( 0 , 1 / 2 ) . We also consider the characteristic polynomial of a Ginibre random matrix whose lemniscate we show is close to the unit disk with overwhelming probability.

Abstract:We consider families of polynomial lemniscates in the complex plane and determine if they bound a Jordan domain. This allows us to find examples of regions for which we can calculate the projection of $\bar{z}$ to the Bergman space of the bounded region. Such knowledge has applications to the calculation of torsional rigidity.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth, separated, geometrically connected scheme defined over a number field $K$ and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ a system of n-dimensional semisimple $\lambda$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group of $X$ such that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the specialization $\{\rho_{\lambda,x}\}_\lambda$ is a compatible system of Galois representations under mild local conditions. For almost all $\lambda$, we prove that any type A irreducible subrepresentation of $\rho_\lambda\otimes \bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is residually irreducible. When $K$ is totally real or CM, $n\leq 6$, and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ is the compatible system of Galois representations of $K$ attached to a regular algebraic, polarized, cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_K)$, for almost all $\lambda$ we prove that $\rho_\lambda\otimes\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is (i) irreducible and (ii) residually irreducible if in addition $K=\mathbb{Q}$.

Weak abelian direct summands and irreducibility of Galois representations

Abstract:Let $\rho_\ell$ be a semisimple $\ell$-adic representation of a number field $K$ that is unramified almost everywhere. We introduce a new notion called weak abelian direct summands of $\rho_\ell$ and completely characterize them, for example, if the algebraic monodromy of $\rho_\ell$ is connected. If $\rho_\ell$ is in addition $E$-rational for some number field $E$, we prove that the weak abelian direct summands are locally algebraic (and thus de Rham). We also show that the weak abelian parts of a connected semisimple Serre compatible system form again such a system. Using our results on weak abelian direct summands, when $K$ is totally real and $\rho_\ell$ is the three-dimensional $\ell$-adic representation attached to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic, not necessarily polarizable representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{A}_K)$ together with an isomorphism $\mathbb{C}\simeq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$, we prove that $\rho_\ell$ is irreducible. We deduce in this case also some $\ell$-adic Hodge theoretic properties of $\rho_\ell$ if $\ell$ belongs to a Dirichlet density one set of primes.

On the number of components of random polynomial lemniscates

Abstract:A lemniscate of a complex polynomial $Q_n$ of degree $n$ is a sublevel set of its modulus, i.e., of the form $\{z \in \mathbb{C}: |Q_n(z)| < t\}$ for some $t>0.$ In general, the number of connected components of this lemniscate can vary anywhere between 1 and $n$. In this paper, we study the expected number of connected components for two models of random lemniscates. First, we show that lemniscates whose defining polynomial has i.i.d. roots chosen uniformly from $\mathbb{D}$, has on average $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$ number of connected components. On the other hand, if the i.i.d. roots are chosen uniformly from $\mathbb{S}^1$, we show that the expected number of connected components, divided by n, converges to $\frac{1}{2}$.

Abstract:It is known that the exponential transform of a quadrature domain is a rational function for which the denominator has a certain separable form. In the present paper we show that the exponential transform of lemniscate domains in general are not rational functions, of any form. Several examples are given to illustrate the general picture. The main tool used is that of polynomial and meromorphic resultants.

Abstract:It is very fundamental to study irreducible plane curve singularities in algebraic geometry. The contents of the paper consist of three parts, called Part[A], Part[B] and Part[C] with Good Appendix. Our aim is to prove by Part[B] and Part[C] that a complete irreducibility algorithm for the Weierstrass polynomial of two complex variables and the Puiseux expansions in Part[A] can be explicitly and rigorously computable in an elementary way, as follows. For brevity, Weierstrass polynomials may be written by W-polys throughout this paper.

Abstract:We prove a zig-zag conjecture describing the reductions of irreducible crystalline two-dimensional representations of $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$ of slope $\frac{3}{2}$ and exceptional weights. This along with previous works completes the description of the reduction for all slopes less than $2$. The proof involves computing the reductions of the Banach spaces attached by the $p$-adic LLC to these representations, followed by an application of the mod $p$ LLC to recover the reductions of these representations.

Abstract:Suppose that the adjusted Brill-Noether number is zero, we prove that there exists a family of twice-marked smooth projective curves such that the family of linear series with two imposed ramification conditions is irreducible. Moreover, under certain conditions, we show that the monodromy group contains the alternating group. In the case $r=1$, the monodromy group is the full symmetric group.

Abstract:For sets $A, B\subset \mathbb N$, their sumset is $A + B := \{a+b: a\in A, b\in B\}$. If we cannot write a set $C$ as $C = A+B$ with $|A|, |B|\geq 2$, then we say that $C$ is $\textit{irreducible}$. The question of whether a given set $C$ is irreducible arises naturally in additive combinatorics. Equivalently, we can formulate this question as one about the irreducibility of boolean polynomials, which has been discussed in previous work by K. H. Kim and F. W. Roush (2005) and Y. Shitov (2014). We prove results about the irreducibility of polynomials and power series over the max-min semiring, a natural generalization of the boolean polynomials. We use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to prove that almost all polynomials are irreducible over the max-min semiring, generalizing work of Y. Shitov (2014) and proving a 2011 conjecture by D. L. Applegate, M. Le Brun, and N. J. A. Sloane. Furthermore, we use measure-theoretic methods and apply Borel's result on normal numbers to prove that almost all power series are asymptotically irreducible over the max-min semiring. This result generalizes work of E. Wirsing (1953).

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain several new classes of irreducible polynomials having integer coefficients whose zeros lie inside an open disk around the origin or outside a closed annular region in the complex plane. Abstract:We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.
