Abstract:In this article, we prove some factorization results for several classes of polynomials having integer coefficients, which in particular yield several classes of irreducible polynomials. Such classes of polynomials are devised by imposing some sufficiency conditions on their coefficients along with some conditions on the prime factorization of the constant term or the leading coefficient of the underlying polynomials in conjunction with the information about their root location.

Abstract:In this article, we obtain upper bounds on the number of irreducible factors of some classes of polynomials having integer coefficients, which in particular yield some of the well known irreducibility criteria. For devising our results, we use the information about prime factorization of the values taken by such polynomials at sufficiently large integer arguments along with the information about their root location in the complex plane. Further, these techniques are extended to bivariate polynomials over arbitrary fields using non-Archimedean absolute values, yielding extensions of the irreducibility results of M. Ram Murty and S. Weintraub to bivariate polynomials.

Abstract:In the paper, we provide an effective criterion for the Lipschitz equivalence of two-branch Cantor sets and three-branch Cantor sets by studying the irreducibility of polynomials. We also find that any two Cantor sets are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if their contraction vectors are equivalent provided one of the contraction vectors is homogeneous.

Abstract:Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer. Let $\phi(x)$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a monic polynomial which is irreducible modulo all primes less than or equal to $n$. Let $a_0(x), a_1(x), \dots, a_{n-1}(x)$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ be polynomials each having degree less than $°\phi(x)$ and $a_n$ be an integer. Assume that $a_n$ and the content of $a_0(x)$ are coprime with $n!$. In the present paper, we prove that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n-1} a_i(x)\frac{\phi(x)^i}{i!}+a_n\frac{\phi(x)^n}{n!}$ is irreducible over the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers. This generalizes a well known result of Schur which states that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n} a_i\frac{x^i}{i!}$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ for all $n\geq 1$ when each $a_i\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $|a_0|=|a_n|=1$. The present paper also extends a result of Filaseta thereby leading to a generalization of the classical Schönemann Irreducibility Criterion.

Abstract:We provide upper bounds on the total number of irreducible factors, and in particular irreducibility criteria for some classes of bivariate polynomials $f(x,y)$ over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{K}$. Our results rely on information on the degrees of the coefficients of $f$, and on information on the factorization of the constant term and of the leading coefficient of $f$, viewed as a polynomial in $y$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{K}[x]$. In particular, we provide a generalization of the bivariate version of Perron's irreducibility criterion, and similar results for polynomials in an arbitrary number of indeterminates. The proofs use non-Archimedean absolute values, that are suitable for finding information on the location of the roots of $f$ in an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{K}(x)$.

Abstract:For a field $K$, and a root $\alpha$ of an irreducible polynomial over $K$ (in some algebraic closure) the number of roots of $f(x)$ lying in $K(\alpha)$ is studied here. Given such an $f(x)$ of degree $n$ for which $r$ of the roots are i n $K(\alpha)$, we describe a construction that yields, for $d\ge2$, irreducible polynomials of degree $nd$ and with exactly $rd$ of the roots in the field generated by any one root of those polynomials. Our results are valid for all number fields and possibly some more perfect fields. As an application, for $K=Q$ and positive integers $n\ge3,d\ge2$, we provide irreducible polynomials of degree $nd$ with exactly $d$ roots in the field generated by one of the roots. Independently, for $k<n$, we construct irreducible polynomials over the rationals of degree $n!/(n-k)!$ for which the field generated by one root contains exactly $k!$ roots. Many interesting new questions for further research are provided.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a non-zero algebraic number. Let $K$ be the Galois closure of $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$ with Galois group $G$ and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, among the other results, we prove the following. If $f\in \bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ is a non-zero element of the group ring $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[G]$ and $\alpha$ is a given algebraic number such that $f(\alpha^n)$ is a non-zero algebraic integer for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, then $\alpha$ is an algebraic integer. This result generalizes the result of Polya [11], Corvaja and Zannier [2] and Philippon and Rath [9]. We also prove the analogue of this result for rational functions with algebraic coefficients. Inspired by a result of B. de Smit [4], we prove a finite version of the Polya type result for a binary recurrence sequences of non-zero algebraic numbers. In order to prove these results, we apply the techniques of Corvaja and Zannier along with the results of Kulkarni et al., [6] which are applications of the Schmidt subspace theorem.

This result extends the results of Boston-Jones and Hamblen-Jones-Madhu regarding the dynamical irreducibility of particular families of unicritical polynomials. We also investigate dynamical irreducibility conditions for cubic and shifted linearized polynomials.

Abstract:We study the class of univariate polynomials $\beta_k(X)$, introduced by Carlitz, with coefficients in the algebraic function field $\mathbb F_q(t)$ over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. It is implicit in the work of Carlitz that these polynomials form a $\mathbb F_q[t]$-module basis of the ring $\text{Int}(\mathbb F_q[t]) = \{f \in \mathbb F_q(t)[X] \mid f(\mathbb F_q[t]) \subseteq \mathbb F_q[t]\}$ of integer-valued polynomials on the polynomial ring $\mathbb F_q[t]$. This stands in close analogy to the famous fact that a $\mathbb Z$-module basis of the ring $\text{Int}(\mathbb Z)$ is given by the binomial polynomials $\binom{X}{k}$. We prove, for $k = q^s$, where $s$ is a non-negative integer, that $\beta_k$ is irreducible in $\text{Int}(\mathbb F_q[t])$ and that it is even absolutely irreducible, that is, all of its powers $\beta_k^m$ with $m>0$ factor uniquely as products of irreducible elements of this ring. As we show, this result is optimal in the sense that $\beta_k$ is not even irreducible if $k$ is not a power of $q$.

Reducing Randomness Via Irrational Numbers

Abstract:We propose a general methodology for testing whether a given polynomial with integer coefficients is identically zero. The methodology evaluates the polynomial at efficiently computable approximations of suitable irrational points. In contrast to the classical technique of DeMillo, Lipton, Schwartz, and Zippel, this methodology can decrease the error probability by increasing the precision of the approximations instead of using more random bits. Consequently, randomized algorithms that use the classical technique can generally be improved using the new methodology. To demonstrate the methodology, we discuss two nontrivial applications. The first is to decide whether a graph has a perfect matching in parallel. Our new NC algorithm uses fewer random bits while doing less work than the previously best NC algorithm by Chari, Rohatgi, and Srinivasan. The second application is to test the equality of two multisets of integers. Our new algorithm improves upon the previously best algorithms by Blum and Kannan and can speed up their checking algorithm for sorting programs on a large range of inputs.
