Abstract:Municipal Square,which relates to complex social relations,is one of the most important public spaces in modern city.Its spatial form is dominantly influenced by the political ideology of the society.Since reform and opening-up was implemented for 30 years,China's economy has developed rapidly,and the social structure has changed dramatically.To keep pace with the economic reform,the process of political reform is accelerated,and the political ideology has changed from government to governance.Accordingly,the spatial form of newly-built municipal squares has shown some new characteristics,such as diversification,humanization,localization and ecologization.To understand how the political reform to governance influences the transformation of municipal square,is helpful for designing good municipal square which is compatible to the need of social development.

Abstract:Under the background that the urban space is changing from "incremental development" to "tapping the potential of stock", the transformation of old urban residential areas is of great significance to promote the improvement of urban quality. As an important part of shaping the public environment in residential areas, the planning and design standards of residential areas only put forward the requirements of area control, and lack the specific criteria of various design elements. Aiming at the typical problems existing in the outdoor activity space of the old residential areas, such as unreasonable layout, lack of total amount, unclear classification and insufficient attraction, a planning and design framework for improving the outdoor activity space quality of the old residential areas are constructed from four dimensions of space layout, space scale and quantity, space hierarchical and function and space attraction, and a total of nine indicators. Quantitative analysis methods such as space syntax and image recognition are introduced. Taking the planning scheme of the old residential area in the south of Wangma community in the central district of Hangzhou as an example, we discuss the rationality of its planning by using the framework, we also analyze the existing problems and put forward optimization suggestions, so as to provide theoretical guidance and planning practice reference for other old residential areas to build high-quality outdoor activity space.

Abstract:Public space is a stage of urban life as wel as a central domain of urban design. Good public spaces are of great significance in fostering social interaction, exposing image features of a city and establishing safe and comfortable urban life. In 2013, the city of Shanghai held the 'pocket square' design competition, which sought to help create public spaces serving urban life and offering citizens with leisure, activities and communication in densely built-up central urban area and turn them into 'drawing rooms of the city'. This paper introduces some thoughts from Tsinghua University's participation in this design competition on the issue of urban public squares in Shanghai and discusses how public spaces can play positive roles in urban development to improve the quality of both physical space and social space of a city.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the design of public space for the social interaction of young people in small towns, so as to further understand their social needs and create a better social environment. With the disappearance of demographic dividend, the value of talents becomes increasingly prominent. The development trend of labor-intensive industries has shifted to focus on high-tech industries, and small-town youth refers to young people living in smaller towns or rural areas, who usually face limited social places and resources. Therefore, this study will focus on analyzing the social behaviors and needs of young people in small towns, and exploring the influence and acceptance of different types of public space design on them. Through case study, interview and field observation, this paper tries to provide targeted public space design ideas for small town communities and create an environment that meets the social needs of young people in small towns, so as to enhance the self-identity and sense of belonging of young talents and alleviate the psychological and social problems of "lying flat" young people.

Abstract:The original purpose of urban squares lays in their humanity,democracy,and sense of citizenship.The urban square was once a place with identity for social interaction. This purpose as a public place has been lost ever since the Baroque time in Europe,when urban squares became a political tool of autocracy in the western world as well as in China in the city cosmetic movement.This paper calls for a return to the humanity and democracy of urban squares to meet the need of,and more importantly to promote,the social and political progress in China.As an example,the authors discussed how the Dujianyan Square has succeeded in designing the urban square as a people's place,through diversifying spaces,creating places for meeting and social interaction,making water accessible and playable,and cre- ating a sense of place and identity.

Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:By applying space syntax theory and method,the research analyzed the space morphology of the downtown of Nanjing and chose ten typical urban squares for the field survey.Then a research to compare the parameters from the space syntax analysis and the field survey was done by SPSS.The aim was to check up if the square spatial system matched the city spatial tissue and to find out the factors which affected the use of the squares by analyzing the spatial structure and the use of the squares in Nanjing.According to the analysis,in the downtown of Nanjing,the urban square spatial system doesn't match the city spatial tissue well.And the most important factors of the square use are the spatial structure of the squares and the land use function around them.At last some pieces of advice to optimize the spatial structure of the urban square are advanced based on the result.

Abstract:The urban square has been a distinguishing characteristic of European cities for millennia. However, in the context of small towns, where the square is often the sole identifier of their physical urbanity, its role differs from that of large towns. This fact is substantial within national administrative systems that endorse desirable urban status to rural settlements endowed with urban morphology. It is also important in times of extensive EU-subsidized actions aimed at improving the quality of public space in small underresourced towns. However, many projects fail to draw from and respond to the specifics of the local context, and, by focusing on the details and disregarding the basics, they may defeat their purpose. Departing from extensive field observations in Poland, this paper puts theoretical framework and current trends in urban design into relation to various elements of a square's spatial configuration in order to arrive at degrees of their urban significance. By interpreting the fundamental values embedded in the morphology of market squares, this paper attempts to isolate the cultural archetypes that shape our perception of such places as urban. The proposed analysis could be used to meet the main goal of market square revitalization, namely to visually articulate urbanity.

Abstract:In the era of rapid development of science and technology, in order to attract the public's attention, many architectural designs unilaterally pursue nonmainstream design, completely ignoring the surrounding environment and historical context. The original spatial features and scales have disappeared, and the root cause is that the spatial shaping is separated from the urban context. Urban design that continues the urban context is not only a method to solve specific urban space problems and contradictions but also an important means to build a beautiful urban space and achieve sustainable development. The urban design of the two banks of the Pinghe River in the east of Foshan is based on the sorting and analysis of the material and spiritual elements of the context of the base. This article will go back to the trend of Western architectural contexts and discuss how to design new buildings while respecting the historical context of the city through rational speculation on the two dimensions of contextualism architectural theory, space and time, combined with architectural cases.

Abstract:The existence and development of cities is to make citizen's social production and daily life a better one. However, in the current process of urbanization, too much attention is paid on the industrial production. Little research to date has been focused on the livability of cities. Given this, this paper first reviewed the theoretical research and construction practice of livable city at home and abroad and then analyzed the problems of the new residential areas and old street areas from the community perspective. By using the case study and comparative analysis method, the paper also analyzed the interaction between China's urban growth pattern flaws and urban land use structure, as well as their impacts on existing residential pattern called residential district pattern of Modernism. The impact of the New Urbanism TND model on China's community construction is investigated and the difference between the residential districts and TND communities is also analyzed by using a practical case study in Gemdale Zizai City. Finally, the Chinese livable community model based on TND is proposed in the study, which provides a reference for theoretical research and construction practice on China's livable city.

Abstract:It has been a universal common cognition that design follows the local context. Whereas local context is multiple and variable, there is a problem that how to epurate them. This paper presents that we can use poeticalism to epurate local context, because poeticalism is the distinct characteristic of Chinese culture and the important mode of expression of Chinese culture. So the course of design has been also the course by poetical seeking and expressing of local context. In the design of Baren square in Bazhong city of Sichuan province, the poetical word of "the night-rain from Ba-mountain floods the autumn-pool" has been found from the three levels of local context and has been expressed with two way that "the performing of waterfall from autumn-pool" and "the city stage of human and deity". At last, the paper elucidates that poeticalism is not only a new method of innovative design, but also even more a unscrambling to the philosophy of "poetical dwelling" and a endeavor of rebuilding the speaking-right of Chinese culture in the field of design.
