Abstract:In this paper, we propose a non-contact real-time centroid measurement method for non-cooperative targets, which calculates the coordinates of the centroid point of the motion model in real time at a frequency of 30 Hz. The TOF (Time of flight) camera configuration, working principle and point cloud preprocessing technology including point cloud fusion of the measurement system are presented. Through the XYZ coordinates of the point cloud data, we calculate the centroid point position of the model. Experiments show that the measured centroid point XYZ three-axis accuracy is about 0.1mm.

Abstract:Star sensor is important equipment for measuring satellite attitude and motion, and star centroid detection accuracy is the basis of the overall accuracy of star sensor. In star sensors, slightly- defocus method is often adopted to acquire dispersive light spots so as to facilitate centroid detection, and certain motion blur can also be introduced because of the motion of satellites. In this paper, we analyzed several commonly-used centroid detection algorithms by using simulation experiment to study the influence of defocus and motion parameters on the accuracy of centroid detection algorithm and provided acceptable parameter value ranges.

Abstract:Development of the CCD sensor calls for a rapid star image processing speed and the basic work is to extract star points correctly. The typical histogram of a star image has a two-peak value structure and majority of the pixels belong to the background. In this paper, the noise of the image is removed with the adaptive Wiener filter. The background and the star points are distinguished using a window transform on the pixel gray value, all pixels whose gray value below the threshold are set to zero, where the threshold is determined with the optimal iterative algorithm or the Otsu algorithm. We locate the star points with an improved cross projection algorithm. Firstly, preprocess the star image into a binary image with the threshold determined above. Then calculate the horizontal and vertical projections of the binary image. In each projection direction, extract the domain bound of the star points with the proposed binarization differential extremum method which is different from the traditional marker method. Finally, the precise positions of the star points are calculated with the weighted centroid algorithm. Experiments on simulated and real star images show that the improved algorithm has a high processing speed (similar to 300ms) and good centroid locating accuracy.

Abstract:A photonic terahertz interference inverse synthetic aperture radar scheme is proposed and demonstrated, achieving 3D positioning of corner reflectors with $\sim 0.8\mathrm{~cm}\times\sim 0.8\mathrm{~cm}2\mathrm{D}$-resolution and $0.042\mathrm{~cm}$ height error over a distance of $220\mathrm{~cm}$.

Abstract:Precise centroid estimation plays a critical role in accurate astrometry using telescope images. Conventional centroid estimation fits a template point spread function (PSF) to the image data. Because the PSF is typically not known to high accuracy due to wavefront aberrations and uncertainties in optical system, a simple Gaussian function is commonly used. PSF knowledge error leads to systematic errors in the conventional centroid estimation. In this paper, we present an accurate centroid estimation algorithm by reconstructing the PSF from well sampled (above Nyquist frequency) pixelated images. In the limit of an ideal focal plane array whose pixels have identical response function (no inter-pixel variation), this method can estimate centroid displacement between two 32$\times$32 images to sub-micropixel accuracy. Inter-pixel response variations exist in real detectors, {\it e.g.}~CCDs, which we can calibrate by measuring the pixel response of each pixel in Fourier space. The Fourier transforms of the inter-pixel variations of pixel response functions can be conveniently expressed in terms of powers of spatial wave numbers using their Taylor series expansions. Calibrating up to the third order terms in this expansion, we show that our centroid displacement estimation is accurate to a few micro-pixels using simulated data. This algorithm is applicable to the new proposed mission concept Nearest Earth Astrometry Telescope (NEAT) to achieve mirco-arcsecond accuracy in relative astrometry for detecting terrestrial exoplanets. This technology is also applicable to high precision photometry missions.

Abstract:In the fields of aerospace, astronomy and biology, the observation and tracking of weak point targets is a common problem. High-accuracy centroid position is the basic and crucial information for subsequent measurement and analysis. A centroid determination method for moving dim point targets is proposed in this work. Based on the target intensity distribution and the motion model, it transforms the energy variation sensed by pixels into the displacement of the spot centroid. Time domain is taken into consideration to reduce the effect of noise based on Kalman filtering. Compared with the traditional centroiding method, the proposed method overcomes the systematic error caused by energy integral of detector and energy truncation of calculation window. It is also not as sensitive to noise as the Gaussian fitting method. Experimental results show that the accuracy of the method can reach within 0.008 pixels. The method can even work with an extremely small amount of information as long as the energy change of only one pixel is detected. The research may provide a good solution for centroid measurement of point targets in different application fields.

Abstract:The random noise of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor is the main factor limiting the further improvement of high-accuracy spot target detection. Accordingly, a window-adaptive centroiding method based on energy iteration is proposed in this article. The method can effectively mitigate the problem of localization performance fluctuations caused by the random noise at the low-intensity pixels within the extraction window. By analyzing the centroiding error model and the random noise of CMOS detectors, simulations are used to deduce that pixel response random noise that remains after removing systematic errors is the main factor limiting further improvement in positioning accuracy. Based on the generally applicable threshold centroiding algorithm, the influence of the pixel response within the extraction window on the centroiding accuracy is derived according to the pixel energy and the pixel location relative to the target centroid. This leads to an iterative method, which combines the pixels with better performance as a new extraction window and recalculates the target centroid. The effectiveness of the algorithm at the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) typical for real cases is simulated and analyzed. An experimental scheme is designed for the subpixel movement of point targets with a measurement platform based on a high-precision rotary table and a star tracker to validate our algorithm. Further real star experiment is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. The results of the experiments indicate that the proposed method can reduce the random noise effect on spot extraction accuracy.

Research on High Precision Locating of Laser Spot Center in Free-Space Laser Communication System

Abstract:The gray centroid algorithm is usually used as the centroid locating algorithm in the free-space laser communication system. However, the limited spatial resolution of the image detector will produce homogenization effect, which results in gray quantization error. Moreover, the spot information will lost when we detecting the object with threshold. The two problems mentioned above will make the locating accuracy worse when using the conventional algorithm. In this paper, we use the squared weighting centroid with threshold algorithm combined with the hardware optimized interpolation subdivision algorithm to improve the locating accuracy. As the weight of bright pixels increased, and the spot information loss decreased due to subdivision, the locating accuracy improved significantly. The simulation results show that the locating accuracy has improved by at least 50%, and the experiment results confirmed that the tracking error (2.57μrad) using the improved algorithm is less than that (4.11μrad) of the conventional algorithm.
Method for finding the 3D center positions of the target reflectors in laser tracking measurement system based on vision guiding

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of large searching region, low positioning speed existing in the laser tracking measurement system at present, a new method for finding the 3D positions of the target reflectors by using monocular model based on vision was proposed. The 3D coordinates of the centers of the reflectors were used to guide mono-laser tracker to fulfill the automatic measurement of multiple benchmarks. Its applied algorithms such as ellipse recognition in vision measurement and spatial spherical center positioning based on mono-camera were investigated. Firstly, based on imaging features of the target reflector such as area, ratio, compactness, the recognition algorithms for image ellipses based on Gestalt theory were presented. The automatic extractions and recognitions of the target reflectors were fulfilled. Then, spatial spherical center positioning algorithm was proposed to calculate the 3D coordinates of the center of the reflectors, based on the equation of image ellipse, camera focal length and spherical radius. Simulation was accomplished as well. Finally, experiments on image ellipse recognition and target reflector center positioning were carried out. Experimental results show that the RMS errors for distances which are about 550 mm between two reflectors fixed on scale bar measured by the method proposed is 1.7282 mm. The searching range of laser beam is reduced substantially, it can satisfy the requirements of high speed and high efficiency in automatic measurements.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a high-frequency centroid sensor employing an optical mask with gradient-varying transmittance and a single point detector. In contrast to pixel array detectors, the centroid detection of this sensor is accomplished by a single point detector, which has higher sampling speed. We developed a mathematical model of optical mask-based centroid detection and verified its validity through simulation. Then, we built an experimental platform and realized high-accurate centroid detection. The experimental results indicate that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is less than m, and the temporal sampling frequency is up to 500 kHz. Its high-frequency detection capability can serve as Malley probe in the field of aero optics, and other application scenarios that demand high detection frequency.

Abstract:Aiming at the dimension measurement of image,a new high accuracy measurement technology based on area charge coupled device(CCD)and a measurement method by contrasting images are proposed.The dimension data of meas-ured parts are calculated by contrasting the images of standard parts and measured parts.By using the algorithm of subpixel based on polynomial interpolation and the technology of image contrast,the exact location of edge can be estimated within a pixel.An improved theoretical algorithm of subpixel based on polynomial interpolation is derived.An application sample in industry demonstrates that the maximum bias of the proposed procedure is 0.01 mm.
Fast Centroid Estimation Algorithm for Coordinates Measurement of Infrared Markers

Abstract:To determine the coordinates of infrared markers, it is very important for the binocular vision system based on lightweighted passive infrared reflective markers and infrared LED array PCB board, which is often used to measure the 3-D motion parameters of a rocket motor. Therefore, a fast centroid estimation algorithm, which segments the infrared image using self-adapting thresholding method, and then the centroid of infrared markers is calculated using improved statistical averaging technique, was developed. A comparison was made between the newly developed algorithm and other algorithms such as traditional statistical averaging, FFT and least-squares method. It is found through comparison that the new algorithm is more suitable for high-speed motion analysis due to its higher accuracy and faster processing speed. Experiments performed on real-world images show that the algorithm can greatly improve the speed of the calculation and meantime ensure the demand of precision on the basis of the better image segmentation result and improved statistical averaging technique.3

Abstract:In the close digital photogrammetric three-dimension coordinates measurement, the circular target is often taken as imaging feature and mounted on the measured object or the probe for 3D coordinates detection. The accuracy with which circular targets are located determines the effectiveness of measurement. Subpixel level accuracy is one of the methods that can improve the accuracy of target location. Many methods which based on subpixel edge or centroid detection have been developed and analyzed for target location, but little research focused on circular optical target location. In this research, a new algorithm named bilinear interpolation centroid algorithm was developed for circular optical target subpixel location. In this technique, the accuracy of the squared gray weighted centroid algorithm can be improved by increasing the available pixels which obtained by bilinear interpolation. The intensity profile of the imaging points and the signal to noise ratio, which affect the subpixel location accuracy, are optimized by automatic exposure control. The experiments have shown that the accuracy of this algorithm is better than the traditional centroid algorithm, and the absolute error of less than 0.0 1 pixels is obtained on the image of a rigid reference bar.
Efficient Detection and Recognition Algorithm of Reference Points in Photogrammetry

Abstract:In photogrammetry, an approach of automatic detection and recognition on reference points have been proposed to meet the requirements on detection and matching of reference points. The reference points used here are the CCT(circular coded target), which compose of two parts: the round target point in central region and the circular encoding band in surrounding region. Firstly, the contours of image are extracted, after that noises and disturbances of the image are filtered out by means of a series of criteria, such as the area of the contours, the correlation coefficient between two regions of contours etc. Secondly, the cubic spline interpolation is adopted to process the central contour region of the CCT. The contours of the interpolated image are extracted again, then the least square ellipse fitting is performed to calculate the center coordinates of the CCT. Finally, the encoded value is obtained by the angle information from the circular encoding band of the CCT. From the experiment results, the location precision of the CCT can be achieved to sub-pixel level of the algorithm presented. Meanwhile the recognition accuracy is pretty high, even if the background of the image is complex and full of disturbances. In addition, the property of the algorithm is robust. Furthermore, the runtime of the algorithm is fast.

Abstract:To meet the requirements for measuring accuracy and real-time performance of CCD laser autocollimators in fields of high-accuracy metrology and aiming and tracing system,a fast and precise center location method for circle target of CCD laser autocollimator is proposed.The specific characteristics of the circle target edge are fully extracted by using multiple structuring elements-based generalized morphological edge detection,while the influences of the noises in images are diminished.Then,the edge is quickly located in subpixel precision by adopting the polynomial interpolation method,and the center position of the circle target is acquired accurately by using circle fitting method based on least square fitting method.Experimental results show that the proposed method is fast,stable and accurate,and the measuring accuracy of the modified CCD laser autocollimator is improved from 2 arcsec to ±0.25 arcsec in 0.23 s(a single measurement process) using the proposed method.The proposed method can efficiently fulfill the requirements for high accuracy and real-time performance of CCD laser autocollimators in small angle measuring and tracing systems.

Abstract:this paper shows a novel high accuracy star centroid acquisition method for airborne star sensor. Different form aerospace application, airborne star sensor operate in the atmosphere, most of the visible stars are covered by sunlight during daytime. Besides, aero-optical effect and atmosphere refraction will affected the accuracy of star centroid. Therefore, a high accuracy acquisition method based gray morphology modified winner filtering are proposed, and the error caused by aero-optical effect and atmosphere are corrected. Firstly, the daytime star image are modeled in consideration of star radiation, sky background radiation, aero-optical effect and atmosphere refraction, then a novel star image filtering algorithm is proposed and the errors caused by aero-optical and atmosphere refraction are corrected. Finally, the proposed algorithm are analysis with simulated star image, compared with traditional algorithm, a much better signal-to-noise ratio is gained.
High-precision Algorithm for Centroid Location of Star Pattern Recognition

Abstract:This paper presents a high-precision algorithm for locating centroid of star patterns. First, the Gaussian distribution is used to approximate the intensity distribution of pixels and thereby to generate a simulation image with a bright spot. Then, methods of normal vectors and singular value decomposition are applied to obtain the least square solutions for the the centroid coordinates of the spot. Numerical simulation shows that the present method can give more accurate results. Finally, application of the proposed algorithm to the problem of telescope optical imaging distortion correction is discussed.

Abstract:Industrial monocular area CCD camera is now playing a remarkable role in the fields of spatial target position and velocity measurement. To overcome the measurement nonlinearities and the process uncertainties, and to improve the precision of target positioning, a set of triangle combination target is employed, the calibration principles of Zhang is utilized, and the idea of combination measurement is proposed by using three focal spots as cooperative target. The experiment shows the position measuring error can be decreased within 2 magnitude, and the effectiveness of such methods is verified.

Abstract:High-accuracy spot target localization is an essential optical measurement technique in fields such as astronomy and biophysics. Random noise generated during the imaging process limits further improvement of centroiding accuracy. Research for centroiding methods can no longer meet the demand for higher accuracy. This limitation is even more severe for low signal to noise ratio (SNR) imaging measurements. This paper proposes an energy filtering method based on time-domain extended image sequences, which is a typical application such as a star tracker. The energy variations of the spot in continuous sequences are analyzed, and the energy is filtered at pixel level. The filtered pixel response that is closer to real energy is involved in the calculation of the centroid. Adaptive variations of filter parameters for different energy distributions are also realized. Both simulations and laboratory experiments are designed to verify the effectiveness of the approach. The results show that this method can effectively and adaptively filter the spot energy at pixel level and further improve centroiding accuracy.

Abstract:The accuracy of the Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor for measuring the wavefront distortion is mainly dependent upon the measuring accuracy of the centroid of each spot. A modified center detection algorithm, which uses some power from the photon events of each pixel instead of photon events themselves, is analyzed theoretically and the computer simulations are given. The results show that photon noise error and sampling error increases as the power value goes up; and to some powers, the readout noise and background noise error decrease. An experiment is described through which the optimum power can be obtained.
