Abstract:The effect of mill time,dispersant content and solid volume fraction on rheological behaviors of Al_2O_3-TiO_2 slurry were investigated.The results showed that the viscosity of Al_2O_3-TiO_2 slurry was only 76 mPa·s and the solidification time was 360s after adding solidified agent when the mill time was 4h,the additive of dispersant was 3%(mass fraction of solid),and the solid volume content was 45%.And this slurry obtained the best fluid performance and abundant solidification time,was propitious to gelcasting.

Abstract:As one of the excellent colloidal ceramic forming methods for fabricating complex shaped ceramic components, gelcasting has been extensively investigated in the past two decades. In this article, a novel nontoxic system for gelcasting of ceramics was investigated using gellan gum as gelling agent. The rheological and gelling properties of gellan gum solutions with different types of cations and different concentrations of divalent magnesium ions were studied. Influences of concentration of gellan gum and solid loading of alumina suspension on the rheological properties and gelling properties of alumina suspension were investigated. The rheological properties of concentrated alumina suspension mixing with gellan gum and magnesium chloride were evaluated. Dense ceramics prepared by gellan gum gelation showed homogeneous microstructure and good mechanical properties.

Abstract:The fast hydration rate of aluminate makes the slurry of CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux coagulates fast, which hinders the production and large-scale application in steel plants. This study selected four dispersants and investigated their mechanism and influence on the dispersibility of CaO–Al2O3-based mold powder slurry. Main results showed that the stability of CaO–Al2O3-based mold powder slurry was poorer than CaO–SiO2-based mold powder slurry. The addition of non-ionic dispersant, OP-10 or glycerol, could make the viscosity of the CaO–Al2O3-based slurry become larger, and the macromolecule dispersant, Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone, resulted in unstable variation of the viscosity of the mold powder slurry. The anionic dispersant, tannic acid, performed well, as it was able to release negative charges covering the powder particles, and the electrostatic repulsion made the aggregation among particles difficult to occur. The 5 wt% addition of tannic acid was found to effectively improve the dispersion of the CaO–Al2O3-based slurry.

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) of Mg-Al powder mixture is a promising method to additively manufacture Mg-Al alloy components without using pre-alloyed powder as feedstock. However, the microstructure and consequent tensile properties of SLMed Mg-9 wt%Al powder mixture have not been systematically investigated. In this work, spherical Mg and Al powder with a weight ratio of 91:9 were mixed using ball milling and the mixture was SLMed at different processing parameters. Mg-Al alloy was successfully fabricated and the highest relative density achieved was 95.7%. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that the microstructure and volume of defects could be controlled by tuning the processing parameters. The highest ultimate tensile strength achieved was 274 MPa, which was comparable to the strength of SLMed pre-alloyed Mg-9 wt%Al as reported in literature. Based on this study, SLM of different Mg powder mixture can be investigated in future. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Isobam, a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride, is a newly developed gelling agent for ceramic colloidal forming. However, the Isobam system exposes a weakness of high viscosity when solids loading exceeds 54 vol%. Suitable additives to effectively decrease viscosity and have minimal impact on gelation strength were discovered from various dicarboxylic acids through investigation on zeta potential, viscosity of suspensions, shear modulus during gelation and yield stress and modulus of elasticity of wet green bodies. Alumina ceramics with flexural strength of 442 +/- 49 MPa and a Weibull modulus of 10.8 were produced from 54 vol% suspensions with 0.5 wt% Isobam assisted by 0.04 wt% phthalic acid and 0.03 wt% oxalic acid after pressureless sintering.

Abstract:As a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride, Isobam, a newly-developed gelling agent, plays a significant role in ceramic forming process. However, dispersion and gelation behavior of Isobam has not been discussed in detail yet. To investigate the influence of other dispersants, pH and electrolytes on dispersion and gelation behavior of Isobam, zeta potential, viscosity and modulus curves during gelation were measured from 50 vol% alumina suspensions with 0.1-0.7 wt% Isobam. A two-step bridging mechanism is proposed to explain the gelation behavior of Isobam, providing guidance on usage of Isobam in combination of other additives to achieve suspensions with high solids loading and adjustable gelation characteristic.

Abstract:Effects of pH values, NH4Cl concentration and AlCl3 concentration on stability of the silica sol were studied to help elucidating the de-stabilization mechanism of the alumina slurry dispersed in silica sol when pH value changes. The de-stabilization mechanism was proposed to be a sol–gel effect of the silica sol resulted from formation of the aluminium ions in the slurry while adjusting the pH values of the slurry in one-way direction by adding HCl solution, which will affect the stability behavior of the silica sol at various pH values. In situ solidification of the slurry was successfully realized utilizing the self-decomposition of formamide to shift the pH value from 2.0 to above 3.0 according to the de-stabilization mechanism. High compaction and uniform green body without air entrapped was obtained by the novel near-net-shape forming method without de-airing process. And dense near-net-shape mullite-based ceramic part with elongated crystals has been successfully fabricated.

Abstract:In the paper, rheological behaviours and colloidal properties of 80 similar to 95wt.% alumina taking CaO-MgO-TiO2-SiO2 system as the sintered additives were discussed. The gelcasted green compacts of 80 similar to 95wt.% alumina can be densified at 1450 similar to 1500 degreesC respectively. Finally, by improving sintering temperature rules the flexural mean strength of 95 Al2O3 Was raised from 220MPa to 384 Wa, and weibull modulus was raised from 2.7 to 6.7.

Abstract:Slip casting is one of the most common forming techniques used in the fabrication of ceramics. To obtain successful casting results, one need first to fully deagglomerate the ceramic powders and get concentrated slurries with good rheological properties. In this work, the rheological properties of concentrated alumina slurries were studied as functions of solid contents and quantities of two different dispersants, i.e., sodium pyrophosphate and diammonium hydrogen citrate. It was found that these properties could be satisfactorily related to the maximum packing fractions which were determined from sedimentation experiments. Our results also indicated that an optimum deflocculation process can always lead to optimal casting and sintering results.

Abstract:<p>This study reports a new wet forming method by hydrophobic modification of short‐chain anionic dispersants. The influence of the content and type of hydrophobic chains on the rheology of alumina slurries, the drying shrinkage rates of wet bodies, the density and strength of the green bodies, and the density and microstructure of the resultant ceramics were intensively investigated. It is revealed that hydrophobic modification can endow short‐chain dispersants with coagulation ability, when 0.3 wt% short chain PIBM (a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride) was combined with 0.1 wt% TMAC (tetramethylammonium chloride), solid loading of the slurry was increased to 58 vol% and the slurry can coagulate to a wet green body in a short time. The resultant green body showed a uniform microstructure and was successfully sintered into translucent ceramics.</p>

Abstract:Ceramic gelcasting without inhibition of gelation due to the presence of oxygen must be performed in a nitrogen atmosphere to avoid surface spallation of the green body, which is a complex and expensive process. This study shows that the surface spallation of ceramic green bodies gelcast in air could be suppressed by introducing a proper amount of water-soluble polymer, polyacrylamide (PAM), to the acrylamide monomer solution. The dispersion of Al2O3 powder in a water solution containing PAM was investigated. The rheological behavior and the gelling behavior of the alumina suspension were analyzed. Flexural strength and microstructure of the gelcast green and sintered bodies were studied.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the impact of aluminium ion (Al 3+ ) incorporation on the microstructure and the phase transformation of the magnesium silicate hydrate system. The magnesium silicate hydrate system with aluminium was prepared by mixing magnesium oxide and silica fume with different aluminium ion contents (the Al/Si molar ratios of 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) at room temperature. The high degree of polymerization of the magnesium silicate hydrate phases resulted in the limited incorporation of aluminium in the structure of magnesium silicate hydrate. The silicon-oxygen tetrahedra sites of magnesium silicate hydrate layers, however, were unable to substitute for silicon sites through inverted silicon-oxygen linkages. The increase in aluminium ion content raised the degree of polymerization of the magnesium silicate hydrate phases from 0.84 to 0.92. A solid solution was formed from residual aluminum-amorphous phases such as hydroxyl-aluminum and magnesium silicate hydrate phases. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (F-SEM), and 29 Si and 27 Al MAS NMR data showed that the addition of Al 3+ promotes the hydration process of MgO and has an obvious effect on the appearance of M-S-H gel. The gel with low aluminum content is fluffy, while the gel with high aluminum content has irregular flakes. The amount of Al 3+ that enters the M-S-H gel increased with the increase of Al 3+ content, but there was a threshold: the highest Al/Si molar ratio of M-S-H gel can be maintained at about 0.006.

Abstract:With nano-SiC as matrix,nano-TiN as reinforcement phase,de-ioned water as dispersion medium,TMAH as dispersant and Y3Al5O12(YAG) as additive,nano-SiC based aqueous slurries were prepared,and the effects of solid phase content and dispersant content on rheological properties,dispersibility and stability of the slurries were analyzed.The results showed that shear viscosity and shear stress of aqueous SiC based slurries increased with the increase of solid phase content,and decreased with the increase of TMAH content.The dispersibility and stability of the slurries both increased with the increase of solid phase content and TMAH content.The aqueous SiC based slurry was pseudo-plastic non-Newtonian fluid with shear-thinning property.The nanoparticles in the slurry were parceled or fixed by YAG sol with network structure to form approximate aggregate with the size of 50—100 nm,which resulted in the stability and dispersion of nanoparticles.

Abstract:A novel process, gel-tape-casting, is employed to fabricate LSGM thin dense sheets in aqueous AM system. The influences of powder properties, dispersant and other additives were discussed and relevant processing parameters were also explored. The slurry of LSGM with a high solid loading about 33 vol.% was successfully obtained.

Abstract:<p>The addition of glycerin reduced the dielectric constant of the aqueous alumina suspension, increased the zeta potential of the alumina powder, thickened the electric double layer, and improved the dispersibility of an alumina suspension for aqueous gel-casting. The glycerin-added suspension can effectively avoid the agglomeration, so that the green body had a more uniform microstructure and a higher relative density. The simultaneous addition of magnesium nitrate, EDTA and glycerol in aqueous-based alumina slurry can effectively promote the homogeneity of green microstructure and hence obtaining the sintered sample with relative sintered density of 99.7% and the mean grain size and distribution of 1.20 ± 0.44 μm. The (pressure-less sintered) sample Mg + EDTA + Gly exhibited superior Vickers hardness comparable to the samples prepared using HP, HIP, and SPS due to the small grain size (1.2 μm) and high sintered density (99.7%).</p>

Abstract:SiC suspended slurry was prepared with organic additives and with deionized water as liquid media.The dispersibility mechanism and spray drying behavior of aqueous slurry were studied.The effects of the organic additives and solid content on the rheological behavior of slurry and the particle size distribution and molding properties of granulated powder pellets were also dis-cussed.The results show that the aqueous SiC slurry has well dispersed behavior and is stable at pH≥10.The slurry exhibited non-Newton flow with slight shear thinning rheology,and the viscosity of aqueous suspensions was very low when the organic addi-tives of 0.2%(mass fraction,the same below) tetramethylammonium hydroxide,2.0% polyvinyl alcohol and 1.0% polyethylene gly-col were added.After spray drying of the slurry with solid content of 50%,the flowability,compaction mechanism and molding properties of granulated powder pellets were obviously improved,while spherical pellets in the green body could be completely broken at a high molding pressure.

Abstract:A novel gelcasting technique without a de-airing step was developed to prepare mullite green body based on the mechanism of stabilization of bubbles entrapped in the slurry.Utilizing the scattering action of alumina particles in a silica sol at a pH value of about 9.5,an alumina slurry dispersed in the silica sol with a chemical composition of stoichiometric pure mullite,with a solid volume loading of 50 % and with viscosity as low as 953 mPa·s was prepared.In situ consolidation of the slurry was accomplished by adjusting the concentration of NH_(4)Cl to control the gelation time of the slurry.The results show that the de-airing time of the slurry has little effect on the porosity of the green body,because no surfactant is introduced into the slurry.A defect-free dried green body with a bending strength of 4.83 MPa can be obtained by this gelcasting technique without de-airing.

Abstract:A novel and simple gelling system based on a water-soluble copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride (commercial name, Isobam) was adopted to manufacture various ceramics via spontaneous gelation. The gelation mechanism of AlN slurry was investigated using infrared spectroscopy. Results show that Isobam was hydrolyzed to produce the –COOH group, and the hydrogen bonding was formed between the –COOH and –CONH2 groups of Isobam during spontaneous gelation. Meanwhile, the gelling process of the Isobam system could be accelerated via enhancing hydrogen bonding through APS addition. With 1 wt% addition of APS, the gelation time reduced to 23 h, the viscosity of 50 vol% AlN slurry decreased to 0.21 Pa·s, and the flexural strength of green body improved by 48%. Therefore, the presence of hydrogen bonding in the Isobam gelation mechanism was confirmed, and it could be enhanced by introducing APS to accelerate gelation.

Abstract:A nano‐SiO 2 ‐coated‐Al 2 O 3 (NSCA) micro‐composite system has been derived from silica sol and alumina to prepare dense mullite ceramics by gelcasting technology. Concentrated NSCA suspension with high solid loading but low viscosity was successfully prepared, utilizing the stabilization mechanism of silica nanoparticle halos around alumina particles at pH 9.5. The defect‐free dried green body with bending strength of 5.85 MPa was obtained with only 7.7 wt.% of monomer and dense mullite ceramics was sintered at 1550°C for 2 h, through initial densification by transient viscous sintering, followed by a densification arrest and then a further densification by solid‐state diffusion at higher temperatures.

Abstract:A gelcasting system of alumina utilizing tartaric acid as the dispersant and glutaraldehyde as the crosslinker is reported, in which glutaraldehyde can polymerize itself and react with tartaric acid, thus forming a three-dimensional network. Measurement of zeta potential and viscosity shows good dispersion ability of tartaric acid. Shear modulus during gelation demonstrates its good gelation strength and fast gelation speed at room temperature. Moreover, an effective way to control the gelation speed is provided to improve the feasibility of this method. Results indicate that this gelcasting method has the advantages of low viscosity, small amounts of additives and short forming time and is a promising method to fabricate green bodies with large sizes and complex shapes.
