Abstract:Service-based learning is a teaching practice or method that helps students to connect their academic learning with practical work that benefits the community. It has been shown to help students in their academic, personal, psychological, sociopolitical, and sociocultural growth, enabling them to develop a diverse set of attributes to solve engineering problems [1], [2]. In addition, mentors and faculty for the service-based learning projects get the opportunity to impact and influence students in their critical thinking and problem-solving skills [3]. It also provides avenues for research and publications. There is evidence to suggest that service-based learning also helps to attract and retain underrepresented groups in the field of engineering [4], [5]. Hence, implementing service-based learning projects as part of academic work in institutions benefits the community, students, institutions, and faculty.
