Abstract:Cadmium is a heavy metal pollutant in environment with high toxicity that severely threats human health. A simple and sensitive method for rapid detection of cadmium ions in water sample is of significant importance. In this paper, a colorimetric method based on aptamer-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for specific recognition were proposed to realize Cd2+ detection. AuNPs aggregate in high-salt solutions because of the shielding of salt to electrostatic repulsion among AuNPs, while aptamers can strengthen the stability of AuNPs and avoid the aggregation. After adding Cd2+ ions, the specific interaction between aptamers and Cd2+ leads to a decrease of free aptamers, which weakens the stability of the AuNPs and results in the color change of the solution. The colorimetric change can be rapidly captured and analyzed by a self-developed smartphone-based colorimetric system (SBCS) within 10 min, which implements the quantitative detection of Cd2+. The results show that Cd2+ ions can be detected with high selectivity and sensitivity with a linear range of 2-20 mu g/L and a detection limit of 1.12 mu g/L. Compared with other methods, the proposed approach features high sensitivity, high simplicity, easy implementation and high throughout, which provides a promising means for in-situ determination of Cd2+ in practical applications.

Abstract:In this project, a sensitive fluorescent aptasensor was fabricated to detect lead ions (Pb2+) by applying hollow gold nanoparticles (HGNPs) as a nano-carrier and rhodamine B (RDB) fluorescent dye as the signal agent. In the aptasensor that was created, the specific attachment of the aptamers to Pb2+ ions led to the release of aptamer from the chitosan (CTS) coated-HGNPs loaded with RDB, causing an increase in fluorescence intensity due to the leakage of RDB. The method demonstrated specific detection of the target analyte, achieving a detection limit (LOD) of 1 ppb and a broad linear dynamic range spanning from 2 to 1000 ppb. The aptasensor was able to accurately measure the concentration of Pb2+ in human serum, low-fat milk, and mineral water samples. The suggested biosensor, which offers the benefits of simplicity, user-friendliness, affordability, and high sensitivity, is well-suited for use with complex samples such as environmental and clinical samples.

Abstract:Lead (II) is regarded as one of the most hazardous heavy metals, and lead contamination has a serious impact on food chains, human health, and the environment. Herein, a colorimetric aptasensor based on the graphene/Fe3O4-AuNPs composites with enhanced peroxidase-like activity has been developed to monitor lead ions (Pb2+). In short, graphene/Fe3O4-AuNPs were fabricated and acted as an enzyme mimetic, so the color change could be observed by chromogenic reaction. The aptamer of Pb2+ was decorated on the surface of the amine magnetic beads by streptavidin–biotin interaction, and the complementary strands of the aptamer and target Pb2+ competed for the binding Pb2+ aptamer. In the presence of Pb2+, aptamers bonded the metal ions and were removed from the system by magnetic separation; the free cDNA was adsorbed onto the surface of the graphene/Fe3O4-AuNPs composites, thus inhibiting the catalytic activity and the color reaction. The absorbance of the reaction solution at 652 nm had a clear linear correlation with the Pb2+ concentration in the range of 1–300 ng/mL, and the limit of detection was 0.63 ng/mL. This assay is simple and convenient in operation, has good selectivity, and has been used to test tap water samples, which proves that it is capable for the routine monitoring of Pb2+.

Abstract:Due to the exceedingly poisonous properties of Pb2+, it is imperative to conduct a thorough assessment of its quantity in both biological and environmental samples, as this is crucial for safeguarding public health. This study describes an economic turn-off fluorescent aptasensor for the quantitative analysis of Pb2+ employing 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimide (PTCDI) as a cost-effective fluorophore, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as separating agent and an elongated aptamer as both targeting agent and PTCDI loading site. The fundamental principle of the suggested fluorescent aptasensor, which is based on PTCDI, relies on detecting variations in the fluorescence intensity of PTCDI when an elongated aptamer (as single-stranded DNA) is present or absent. The advanced aptasensor is advantageous due to the elongation of the lead aptamer sequence length induced by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), resulting in enhanced sensitivity. The presence of Pb2+ and the centrifugation process causes the separation of the poly A-modified aptamer/Pb2+ conjugate from the poly T sequence. Hence, the interaction of PTCDI with the poly A moiety in the modified aptamer leads to a decrease in its fluorescence emission. The findings showcased that the fluorescent aptasensor exhibited exceptional specificity towards Pb2+ ions, while the biosensing platform accomplished an impressive detection limit of 3.7 pM. Moreover, the suggested aptasensor utilizing PTCDI exhibits a commendable capability in quantitatively analyzing Pb2+ within human serum samples and mineral water.

Abstract:Lead contamination is a serious environmental problem with toxic effects in human. Here, we developed a simple and sensitive sensing method employing ATTO 647N/aptamer-SWNT ensemble for detection of Pb(2+). This method is based on the super quenching capability of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), high affinity of the aptamer toward Pb(2+) and different propensities of ATTO 647N-aptamer and ATTO 647N-aptamer/Pb(2+) complex for adsorption on SWNTs. In the absence of Pb(2+), the fluorescence of ATTO 647N-aptamer is efficiently quenched by SWNTs. Upon addition of Pb(2+), the aptamer binds to its target, leading to the formation of a G-quadruplex/Pb(2+) complex and does not interact with SWNTs and ATTO 647N-aptamer starts fluorescing. This sensor exhibited a high selectivity toward Pb(2+) and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.42 nM was obtained. Also this sensor could be applied for detection of Pb(2+) ions in tap water and biological sample like serum with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A highly selective two-point separation strategy was designed-based on a cross-like all-in-one lab-on-paper analytical device. The table and cleavable enzyme-coated reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-PdAu probe was fabricated as the signal reporter to enable the visualization and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) dual-mode sensing of Pb2+. Concretely, the experimental workflow consists of the following process: (i) fabrication of the lab-on-paper device and growth of Au nanopariicles on ECL detection zone, (ii), immobilization of Pb2+-specific DNAzyme, and (iii) hybridization between DNAzyme and rGO-PdAu-glucose oxidase (GOx) labeled oligonudeotide to form the double-stranded DNA. Upon addition of Pb2+ into the prepared system, the double-helix structure of the DNA was destroyed, resulting in the release of cleaved rGO-PdAu-GOx probe to visualization bar to promote the effective Qxidation and color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. As a consequence, the color change can be recognized by naked eye, meanwhile GOx on an uncleaved signal probe can oxidize glucose along with the H2O2 production. As a co-reaction reagent for luminol ECL system, the concentration of H2O2 is proportional to the ECL intensity, which constitutes a new mechanism for colorimetric and ECL dual mode to detect Pb2+ With the method developed here, the concentration of Pb2+ could be easily determined by the naked eye within a linear range from 5 to 2000 nM, as well as by monitoring the decreased ECL intensity of luminol in a linear. range of 0.5-2000 nM. This work not only constructs a simple and versatile platform for on-site visible monitoring of Pb2+ in tap water and river water but also furnishes a strategy for designing a dual-mode sensing toward different heavy metal ions based on specific DNAzyme in the fields of environmental monitoring-related technologies.

Abstract:The steps involved in printing fluorescent ink on the modified filter paper and measuring the lead ions. This work discusses surface modification of cellulose paper specimens for compatibility with nitrogen and sulfur co‐doped carbon dots (NSCDs) for lead ion sensing. The interaction of carbon dots (CDs) and cellulose fibers was investigated using silane or chitosan‐modified cellulose papers. It was found that modified papers could reduce undesirable redistribution of CDs, during paper drying. Also, only chitosan‐modified filter paper was suitable for the successful immobilization of NSCDs. The effect of paper type, chitosan amount, pH, and NSCDs concentration was also studied, and a Whatman No. 42 filter paper modified with chitosan (1% w/v), pH 8.0, and an NSCD concentration of 2.5 g L−1 being selected for further studies. The sensor exhibited high selectivity for lead(II) compared with other metal ions because lead(II) resulted in the most significant changes in the emitted light intensity. Variations in NSCDs fluorescence were measured using a fluorescence imaging system. The NSCDs‐paper sensor showed a linear relationship between mean fluorescence intensity and lead(II) in the concentration range of 5.00–1.25 × 102 μmol L−1 with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9988 and a detection limit of 4.50 μmol L−1. The suggested method showed satisfying results for lead(II) determination in different samples as a fast and low‐cost approach with on‐site application.

Abstract:Herein, an enzyme-free fluorescent aptasensor was introduced for the ultrasensitive quantification of lead (Pb 2+ ) ion as a hazardous pollutant of the environment and foodstuffs. A nanocomposite of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 and gold nanoparticles (ZIF-8@AuNPs) was utilized as an efficient quencher of the fluorescence intensity of carboxyfluorescein (FAM) signal reporter. The establishment of a hybrid structure between attached aptamer on ZIF-8@AuNPs nanocomposite, and its FAM-tagged complementary (CP) strand decreased the fluorescence response. The preferential binding between the aptamer and Pb 2+ released CP strands, which retrieved the fluorescence signal. The aptasensor could assess Pb 2+ in the linear concentration range of 1 pM-1 nM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.24 pM. Besides, it could quantify Pb 2+ in various samples, including fish, shrimp, tap water, milk, and serum samples. The developed aptasensor with the superiorities of easiness, cost-effectiveness, easy-to-operate, and rapidness is promising for controlling marine foodstuff safety.

Abstract:Lab-on-paper (LOP) devices are urgently required for the rapid development of point-of-care diagnoses and environmental assays. Herein, an all-sealed paper-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform was developed to achieve lead ions (Pb2+) sensitive analysis via incorporating convenient plastic package technology. Benefiting from transparent plastic encapsulation, the sealed devices effectively avoided the interference of O2. Meanwhile, myrica rubra-like Pt nanomaterials (MPNs) prepared by an economical and easy-to-operate ultrasound method were employed to catalyzeH2O2 decomposition. With the help of Pb2+-specific DNAzymes, the oligonucleotide probe functionalized via MPNs could be detached from the device in the presence of target, resulting in the reduced ECL intensity. Moreover, the combination of modified paper electrode with functional regions separated by multiple layers of wax enhanced the practicability of the LOP device for rapid detection. Under the optimal conditions, the all-sealed platform achieved wide linear relationship ranging from 0.01 nM to 0.05 μM with a low detection limit of 0.004 nM for sensitive detecting Pb2+. It is believed that this platform could provide a robust, simple and versatile strategy for sensitive determination of heavy metal ions, and be applied in on-site contamination analysis in the future.

Novel paper-based potentiometric combined sensors using coumarin derivatives modified with vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles for the selective determination of trace levels of lead ions

Abstract:Novel miniaturized Pb(II) paper-based potentiometric sensors are described using coumarin derivatives I and II as electroactive ionophores and nano vanadium pentoxide as a solid contact material for the sensitive and selective monitoring of trace lead ions. Density functional theory (DFT) confirms optimum geometries, electronic properties, and charge transfer behaviors of 1:2 Pb(II): coumarin complexes. The sensors are prepared by using two strips of 20 × 5 mm filter paper with two circular orifices. One orifice is coated with vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles in colloidal conductive carbon as a solid-contact, covered by a PVC membrane containing coumarin ionophore to act as a sensing probe. The other orifice is treated with Ag/AgCl in a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film, to act as a reference electrode. Sensors with ionophores (I) and (II) exhibit Nernstian slopes of 27.7 ± 0.2 and 30.2 ± 0.2 mV/decade over the linear concentration range 4.5 × 10-7 to 6.2 × 10-3 M and 8.5 × 10-8 to 6.2 × 10-3 M, with detection limits of 1.3 × 10-7 M (26.9 ppb) and 2.1 × 10-8 M (4.4 ppb), respectively. The sensors are satisfactorily used for accurate determination of lead ions in drinking water, lead-acid battery wastewater, and electronic waste leachates. The results compare favourably well with data obtained by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry.
High-Performance Estimation of Lead Ion Concentration Using Smartphone-Based Colorimetric Analysis and a Machine Learning Approach

Abstract:Traditional methods for detection of lead ions in water samples are costly and time-consuming. In this work, an accurate smartphone-based colorimetric sensor was developed utilizing a novel machine learning algorithm. In the presence of Pb2+ ions in the solution of specifically functionalized gold nanoparticles, the color of solution turns from red to purple. Indeed, the color variation of the solution is proportional to Pb2+ concentration. The smartphone camera captures the corresponding color change, and the image is processed by an efficient artificial intelligence protocol. The nonlinear regression approach was used for concentration estimation, in which the parameters of the proposed model are obtained using a new feature extraction algorithm. In prediction of Pb2+ concentration, the average absolute error and root-mean-square error were 0.094 and 0.124, respectively. The influence of pH of the medium, temperature, oligonucleotide concentration, and reaction time on the performance of the proposed sensor was carefully investigated and understood to achieve the best sensor response. This novel sensor exhibited good linearity for the detection of Pb2+ in the concentration range of 0.5–2000 ppb with a detection limit of 0.5 ppb.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In the present study, a novel colorimetric sensor was designed based on the curcumin embedded in bacterial cellulose nanofiber for the determination of lead (Pb2+) ion in rice. Curcumin-modified bacterial cellulose nanofiber was characterized by FT-IR and FEG-SEM analyses. The fabricated chemosensor underwent a color change from orange to red in the presence of Pb2+. The selectivity of the sensor was examined by its challenging against the various heavy metal ions, such as Ba2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ ions. The results proved that the developed sensor was selective toward Pb2 + ion. The sensing method provides the advantages of simplicity and cost-effectiveness for the quantitative detection of Pb2+ with the detection limits of 9 µM and 0.9 µM through observation with naked eye and image processing, respectively. The designed chemosensor is promising to be a low-cost and portable device for the on-site and real-time monitoring of Pb2+ ion.

Abstract:Lead contamination in aquatic products is one of the main hazard factors. The aptasensor is a promising detection method for lead ion (Pb(II)) because of its selectivity, but it is easily affected by pH. The combination of ion-imprinted polymers(IIP) with aptamers may improve their stability in different pH conditions. This paper developed a novel electrochemical biosensor for Pb(II) detection by using aptamer-imprinted polymer as a recognition element. The glassy carbon electrode was modified with gold nanoparticles and aptamers. After the aptamer was induced by Pb(II) to form a G-quadruplex conformation, a chitosan-graphene oxide was electrodeposited and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to form an imprint layer, improving the stability of the biosensor. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the current signal change (∆I) showed a linear correlation of the content of Pb(II) in the range of 0.1–2.0 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.0796 μg/mL (S/N = 3). The biosensor also exhibited high selectivity for the determination of Pb(II) in the presence of other interfering metal ion. At the same time, the stability of the imprinted layer made the sensor applicable to the detection environment with a pH of 6.4–8.0. Moreover, the sensor was successfully applied to the detection of Pb(II) in mantis shrimp.

Abstract:Due to the serious risks of lead pollution to human health, it plays a great role in constructing a simple, inexpensive, portable, and user-friendly strategy for Pb 2+ detection in environmental samples. Herein, a paper-based distance sensor is developed to detect Pb 2+ assisted with the target-responsive DNA hydrogel. Pb 2+ can activate DNAzyme to cleave its substrate strand, which results in the hydrolysis of the DNA hydrogel. The released water molecules trapped in the hydrogel can flow along the patterned pH paper due to the capillary force. The water flow distance (WFD) is significantly influenced by the amount of water released from the collapsed DNA hydrogel triggered by the addition of various Pb 2+ concentrations. In this way, Pb 2+ can be quantitatively detected without using specialized instruments and labeled molecules, and the limit of detection (LOD) of Pb 2+ is 3.0 nM. Additionally, the Pb 2+ sensor works well in lake water and tap water. Overall, this simple, inexpensive, portable, and user-friendly method is very promising for quantitative and in-field detection of Pb 2+ with excellent sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:This paper reports the successful development and application of an efficient method for quantifying Pb2+ in aqueous samples using a smartphone-based colorimetric device with an imprinted polymer (IIP). The IIP was synthesized by modifying the previous study; using rhodizonate, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), and potassium persulfate (KPS). The polymers were then characterized. An absorption study was performed to determine the optimal conditions for the smartphone-based colorimetric device processing. The device consists of a black box (10 × 10 × 10 cm), which was designed to ensure repeatability of the image acquisition. The methodology involved the use of a smartphone camera to capture images of IIP previously exposed at Pb2+ solutions with various concentrations, and color channel values were calculated (RGB, YMK HSVI). PLS multivariate regression was performed, and the optimum working range (0–10 mg L−1) was determined using seven principal components with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.215 mg L−1 and R2 = 0.998. The applicability of a colorimetric sensor in real samples showed a coefficient of variation (% RSD) of less than 9%, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied as the reference method. These results confirmed that the quantitation smartphone-based colorimetric sensor is a suitable analytical tool for reliable on-site Pb2+ monitoring.

In this paper, we describe a combination of microfluidic paper-based sensors (µPADs) and an Android-based smartphone application (App) for simultaneous on-site quantification of phosphate (PO4-P), silicate (SiO3-Si) and nitrite (NO2-N) in coastal seawater samples. The developed App can on-site capture, process, and quantify the µPAD colorimetric outputs. This App uses an image processing algorithm for quantifying color intensity and relating the RGB components to the analyte concentrations. The GPS-tagged data can be stored on the smartphone or sent via social networks. The significant factors affecting the detection of the analytes were optimized using Box-Behnken design. Under optimized parameters, the proposed method presented the linear ranges between 5 and 100 µg L-1 for phosphate (R2 = 0.9909), 5 to 100 µg L-1 (R2 = 0.9819) for nitrite and 10 to 600 µg L-1 (R2 = 0.9933) for silicate. The LODs of the method for detection of phosphate, nitrite and silicate were 1.52 µg L-1, 0.61 µg L-1 and 3.74 µg L-1, respectively. The device was successfully used to simultaneous analyze and map the PO4-P, SiO3-Si and NO2-N of Bushehr coastal seawater samples (Iran). The results were confirmed by the lab-based conventional colorimetric methods using spectrophotometer.

Abstract:The regular and on-site monitoring of ions in drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health, ensuring high water quality, and preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, developing a portable analytical device for the rapid, cost-effective, and visual on-site detection of multiple environmental pollutants is notably significant. In the present work, a novel ratiometric microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed and developed for the simultaneous detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in water samples taking advantages from built-in masking zone. The μPAD was functionalized with a greenish-yellow fluorescent Zn-based metal-organic framework@tetracycline (FMOF-5@TC) nanocomposite, and the ratiometric design was based on the change in emission color from greenish yellow (FMOF-5@TC) to blue (FMOF-5). The μPAD consisted of one sample zone linked to two detection zones via two channels: the first channel was for the detection of both ions, while the second was intended for detecting only Cu2+ ions and comprised a built-in masking zone to remove Fe3+ ions prior to reaching the detection zone. The corresponding color changes were recorded with the aid of a smartphone and RGB calculations. The linear ranges were 0.1-80 μM for Cu2+ and 0.2-160 μM for Fe3+, with limits of detection of 0.027 and 0.019 μM, respectively. The simple μPAD design enabled the simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions in drinking water samples with excellent accuracy and precision, with spike recoveries of 81.28-96.36% and 83.01-102.33% for Cu2+ and Fe3+, respectively.

Abstract:Realization of screen-printed disposable microchip based on organic membrane sensitive layer highly responsive to lead has been demonstrated for the first time. Fabrication, potentiometric characterization and analytical application of the novel microchip have been reported. A sensitive layer comprises TiO2 nanoparticles and multiwalled carbon nanotubes "MWCNTs" composite incorporated in PVC membrane has uploaded on the plastic screen-printed microelectrode substrate surface using novel protocol. The new chip provided a linear behavior for Pb2+ ions over the lead concentration range of 1 × 10−6–1 × 10−1 mole L−1 with super Nernstian sensitivity (49 mV), relatively long life span (>4 months), and a fast response time (10 s). The advantages showed by the microchip include simple fabrication, small size, mass production, cost effectiveness, and automation and integration feasibility. The realized new microchip has been successfully utilized in the quantification of some lead (II) samples with average recovery of 101.9% and the RDS was <3.

Abstract:Lead ion (Pb2+) is one of the heavy metal contaminants within the environment, which can seriously affect biological health. Thus, it is very important to detect lead ions, especially exceeding the standard concentration (100 ng/mL). In this work, we have developed a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer sensor with Z-scheme Fe2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction as a substrate material for sensitive detection of Pb2+. Specifically, Fe2O3/g-C3N4 is employed as a substrate with a powerful and stable photocurrent response. Au and DNA-1 connected to the substrate material via the Au-S bond and increased the electron conduction. Marking DNA-2 with ZnO effectively reduced the light absorption intensity resulting in a lower photocurrent response. Surprisingly, the Pb2+ PEC sensor showed good linearity in the detection range of 62 pg/mL to 1 μg/mL with a detection limit as low as 7.9 pg/mL (S/N = 3). The sensor showed stable recovery and low relative standard deviation in real sample detection. Additionally, the sensor exhibited excellent stability, selectivity, and reproducibility. The reproducibility of the electrodes was evaluated, and the accuracy of the individual electrode current values was calculated to range from 0.5% to 2.71% with an RSD of 1.74%. Such PEC sensor guarantees to supply a brand-new approach to the detection of Pb2+.

Abstract:Pb(II) is a prevalent heavy metal ion classified as a 2B carcinogen. Excessive intake of Pb(II) in the human body can damage the central nervous system, kidneys, liver, and immune system, leading to permanent brain damage, anemia, and cancer. Colorimetry can be applied to rapidly determine Pb(II) residues, but there are still many challenges in the accuracy and sensitivity of detection. Based on the inhibitory impact of Pb(II) on the oxidase-like activity of octahedral silver oxide (Ag 2 O), a colorimetric sensor with smartphone-assisted analysis for the Pb(II) detection was first developed. Herein, it has been found that Pb(II) can adsorb onto the surface of octahedral Ag 2 O, hindering the production of O 2 − in the reaction system. This ultimately results in the suppression of oxidase-like activity, leading to a lighter purple appearance of the colorimetric reaction solution. The sensor exhibits a high degree of sensitivity and a limit of detection (LOD) for Pb(II) was calculated as 2.2 μg L −1 . Hence, the developed colorimetric sensor with high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and high tolerance to sodium ions is hopeful to have practical applications in Pb(II) detection in environmental water samples. Moreover, the sensor will provide a novel strategy for heavy metal ion detection and other substances.
