Abstract:Heavy-metal ions detection conventionally relies on standard instruments that are complicated, time-consuming and constrained to laboratories. To mitigate this problem, we developed a hand-held and cost-effective smartphone-integrated analysis platform that allows fast identification of heavy-metal ions pollution caused by industrial wastewater discharge. This portable platform integrates a colorimetric sensor array consisting of plasmonic nanocolorants and organic chromophores to detect typical heavy-metal ions at the ppm level within 15 s. The image of the colorimetric sensor array is transmitted to the Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) imager of the smartphone via 96 individual optical fibers, generating RGB differential fingerprints and quantitatively analyzed by pattern recognition algorithms. Facile identification of 13 common heavy-metal ions (Hg2+, Cd2+, Cr6+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Se4+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Zn2+, As3+, Mn6+, Fe3+, Cu2+) was demonstrated using several different multivariate analyses of the digital data library, including principal component and hierarchical cluster analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated the multiplexed detection and classification of 4 typical industrial wastewater models (Electroplating, Battery, Metallurgical, Pesticide waste-water) and real water samples with this portable platform, and achieved good discrimination and reproducibility. Combined with edge computing of smartphones and Internet-of-Things (IoT) cloud infrastructure, the portable platform shows feasible potential for pollution traceability, environmental monitoring, and water quality analysis.

The value of RGB is carefully corrected and linked to the concentration of ASs with a standard deviation of <10% in the 10-1000 ppb (part per billion) range. In order to avoid the interference arising from inorganic anions (such as those found in tap water and groundwater), the water sample is pre-treated either by solid-phase extraction (SPE), which takes-30 min, or by dual liquid-phase extraction (dual-LPE, developed by us), which takes similar to 5 min. In the latter case, the organic phase of the first LPE (equilibrium with water sample) is transferred and subjected to a second LPE (equilibrium with Milli-Q water) to remove any potential background interference. In the meantime, SPE can also pre-concentrate ASs at 100-1000 times (in volume) to benefit the sensitivity. Consequently, our smartphone app can detect PFOA spiked in tap/groundwater with an LOD of 10 ppb (similar to 12 nM, dual-LPE of similar to 5 min), or 0.5 ppb (similar to 1.2 nM, SPE of similar to 3 h), suggesting that it has the potential to succeed as a pre-screening tool for on-site application and in common laboratory tests. Abstract:Today, easy availability and efficient detection assays in low-resource settings are mandatory. Therefore, a smartphone-assisted paper-based detection strategy using eosin Y (EY)-embed ZIF-8 nanocomposite for phosphate (Pi), neutral red (NR) and heparin (HP) on site testing was fabricated. After adding the targets in a specific order, the prepared strips produced brilliant color transitions (astonishing colors, ranging from pistachio to bright yellow for Pi, from bright yellow to jacinth for NR and from jacinth to light orange for HP). These variation on tonality can be evaluated by the smartphone-based readout device (Color Assist App) through the ratio change of B/(R + G + B), which exhibits superior performance of on-site detection in wastewater, including high sensitivity (LOD is 0.015, 0.031 and 0.014 mM for Pi, NR and HP, respectively), ultra-fast response time and excellent selectivity. This strips and smartphone dual-mode monitoring strategy may offer a convenient idea to identify Pi, NR and HP, with great prospects for environmental wastewater applications. Additionally, the probe was enabled for bioimaging of Pi, NR and HP in living cells. Finally, the related anti-counterfeiting fluorescent ink of probe was proposed on schedule.

Abstract:With the development of global industry, carbon dioxide emissions surged. The conversion of carbon dioxide from the air results in some CO32-, which can exacerbate environmental disasters like ocean acidification. Therefore, the content of CO32- in seawater is an important indicator of the degree of ocean acidification. In this study, natural fluorescent protein phycocyanin (PC) was used as a fluorescent probe, and a fluorescence detection method was established for quantitative monitoring of CO32- with quick response time (within 50 s), high sensitivity, and selectivity. The fluorescence quenching phenomenon between PC and CO32- was mainly attributed to static quenching. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.42 μM and the method was successfully applied to monitor CO32- in tap water and seawater, acquiring satisfactory recovery between 99.28 % and 106.40 %. More importantly, paper-based test strips were easily fabricated using PC, enabling the rapid, visual, and on-site detection of CO32- with the aid of a smartphone. The visual detection integrated with the smartphone was converted to data information (RGB value) through a Color Picker APP and successfully used for quantitative identification of CO32-. By capturing fluorescent images and analyzing the corresponding RGB value via a smartphone, the linear calibration ranged from 0.5 μM to 500.0 μM with LOD of 0.11 μM was obtained. Satisfactory recoveries were acquired in tap water (98.00 %-107.50 %) and seawater (97.30 %-101.74 %), respectively. Therefore, integrating the PC fluorescent paper with a smartphone realizes the rapid, visual, and on-site detection of CO32- in the water environment, which is expected to broaden application prospects of monitoring ocean acidification degree.

Abstract:This research presents a smartphone-integrated imaging device to detect nitrate (NO 3 – ) and phosphate (PO 4 3- ) in soil and water samples for agricultural input management and environmental pollution monitoring. This low-cost and field-deployable device uses a smartphone with a digital camera to take a color photograph of the extracted solution under test. The sensing principle is based on the standard colorimetric phenoldisulfonic acid and ascorbic acid methods for NO 3 – and PO 4 3- in soil and water samples, respectively. A 3D printed device that houses the sensor's optical source and other optical components is coupled to the phone's built-in rear camera and turned into a compact handheld system. An android application, 'SMART NP,' is also developed to quantify the concentrations of NO 3 – and PO 4 3- in soil and water samples using the Value (V) component of the Hue Saturation and Value (HSV) color space model. The results obtained with the proposed device were comparable to laboratory-grade spectrophotometer data. The limit of detection of the device for NO 3 – in soil, NO 3 – in water, PO 4 3- in soil, and PO 4 3- in water were calculated as 0.1 mg L -1 , 0.07 mg L -1 , 0.001 mg L -1 , and 0.02 mg L -1 , respectively, with good accuracy (≤1% bias) and precision (∼2% residual standard deviation). The device exhibited a sensitivity of 0.17 mg L -1 , 0.12 mg L -1 , 0.026 mg L -1 , and 0.49 mg L -1 for NO 3 – in soil, NO 3 – in water, PO 4 3- in soil, and PO 4 3- in water, respectively. Overall, this sensing device has the potential to assist farmers or scientists in easily measuring NO 3 – and PO 4 3- concentrations in soil and water media, without the need for laboratory equipment.

Abstract:The development of colorimetric analysis technologies for the commercial cellphone platform has attracted great attention in environmental monitoring due to the low cost, high versatility, easy miniaturization, and widespread ownership of cellphones. This work demonstrates a cellphone-based colorimetric multi-channel sensor for quantifying multiple environmental contaminants simultaneously with high sensitivity and stability. To improve the sensitivity of the sensor, a delicate optical path system was created by using a diffraction grating to split six white beams transmitting through the multiple colored samples, which allows the cellphone CMOS camera to capture the diffracted light for image analysis. The proposed sensor is a universal colorimetric detection platform for a variety of environmental contaminants with the colorimetry assay in the range of 400–700 nm. By introducing the diffraction grating for splitting light, the sensitivity was improved by over six folds compared with a system that directly photographed transmitted light. As a successful proof-of-concept, the sensor was used to detect turbidity, orthophosphate, ammonia nitrogen and three heavy metals simultaneously with high sensitivity (turbidity: detection limit of 1.3 NTU, linear range of 5–400 NTU; ammonia nitrogen: 0.014 mg/L, 0.05–5 mg/L; orthophosphate: 0.028 mg/L, 0.1–10 mg/L; Cr (VI): 0.0069 mg/L, 0.01–0.5 mg/L; Fe: 0.025 mg/L, 0.1–2 mg/L; Zn: 0.032 mg/L, 0.05–2 mg/L) and reliability (relative standard deviations of six parallel measurements of 0.37%–1.60% and recoveries of 95.5%–106.0% in surface water). The miniature sensor demonstrated in-field sensing ability in environmental monitoring, which can be extended to point-of-care diagnosis and food safety control.

Abstract:Abstract A major goal of environmental agencies today is to conduct point-of-collection monitoring of excess inorganic phosphate (Pi) in environmental water samples for tracking aquatic “dead zones” caused by algae blooms. However, there are no existing commercial devices which have been miniaturized and are suitable for the point-of-need-testing (“PONT”) that is required to fully map a large region, such as the Florida Everglades. To solve this challenge, a reflection-mode fluorescence-sensing apparatus was developed, leveraging an environmentally sensitive fluorophore (MDCC) bound to a bacterial phosphate-binding protein to generate a fluorescent optical signal proportional to the concentration of (Pi) present. The combined end-to-end integrated sensor system had a response time of only 4 s, with minimal effects of common interfering agents and a linear range spanning from 1.1 to 64 ppb. To support ease-of-use during PONT, the platform incorporated disposable wax-printed paper strip sample pads and a smartphone camera detection system. Since the EPA threshold is currently 30 ppb to prevent eutrophication, this system serves as a rapid test of whether a region is compliant.

Abstract:Rural areas often rely on decentralized wastewater treatment systems, including individual sewage treatment systems (ISTS), for remote houses, farms, and other establishments. For practical and financial reasons, ISTSs are often exempt from routine monitoring of effluent quality. As a result, they cannot guarantee the same level of treatment performance as their large-scale counterparts. A smartphone-based colorimetric monitoring method has been developed and tested to address this issue. This method can be easily adopted by untrained system owners. It uses modified test strips with built-in color reference zones and fiducial markers, which simplifies data acquisition and interpretation, eliminating the need for positioning accessories or controlled lighting. The proposed method ensures reliable results even when using a regular smartphone with default picture quality settings. The method has been tested with test strips measuring five different relevant wastewater quality parameters: pH, phosphates, ammonium, nitrates, and nitrites. For each type of test strip, the software installed on a smartphone provides a correlation for interpolating the measurements. The R2 -values ranged from 0.881 to 0.993 for different reagents. The accuracy of this method was verified using lab-grade reference sensors and was found to be sufficient for the intended purpose.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination especially in aqueous media has become an important risk to human health and environment. Therefore, due to the broad distribution of barium (Ba 2+ ) and strontium (Sr 2+ ) ions in the environment and wide variety of their harmful health effects for human, development of efficacious systems for their accurate and selective determination is of great importance. Aiming to develop a point-of-care and easy-to-use sensing device, a paper-based colorimetric sensing device was designed for simultaneous measurement of Ba 2+ and Sr 2+ ions standing on the basis of the color change of sodium rhodizonate (SR) in the presence of various concentrations of the target analytes. These color changes were photographed using a smartphone, and after analyzing with Photoshop 2022 software, the average variations in the intensities of colors (RGB (red, green, blue) model) were used to draw the calibration curves. The quantitative identification of Ba 2+ and Sr 2+ ions in a single solution was carried out by masking one of them at a moment. The average color intensities (G) displayed a linear relationship with the concentration of the analytes in the ranges of 5––300 ppm and 5–350 ppm with the limit of detection (LOD) values of 3.64 and 4.75 ppm for Ba 2+ and Sr 2+ ions, respectively. Moreover, the selectivity of the proposed analytical device was assessed; SR was selective for the target analytes versus the other ions causing a considerable color change. Furthermore, the practical application of this colorimetric device was investigated by the excellent performance in real samples indicating its potential for field applications.

Portable Platform for Rapid In-Field Identification of Human Fecal Pollution in Water

Abstract:Human fecal contamination of water is a public health risk. However, inadequate testing solutions frustrate timely, actionable monitoring. Bacterial culture-based methods are simple but typically cannot distinguish fecal host source. PCR assays can identify host sources but require expertise and infrastructure. To bridge this gap we have developed a field-ready nucleic acid diagnostic platform and rapid sample preparation methods that enable on-site identification of human fecal contamination within 80 min of sampling. Our platform relies on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) of human-associated Bacteroides HF183 genetic markers from crude samples. Oligonucleotide strand exchange (OSD) probes reduce false positives by sequence specifically transducing LAMP amplicons into visible fluorescence that can be photographed by unmodified smartphones. Our assay can detect as few as 17 copies/ml of human-associated HF183 targets in sewage-contaminated water without cross-reaction with canine or feline feces. It performs robustly with a variety of environmental water sources and with raw sewage. We have also developed lyophilized assays and inexpensive 3D-printed devices to minimize cost and facilitate field application.
Self-Assembled Plasmonic Structural Color Colorimetric Sensor for Smartphone-Based Point-Of-Care Ammonia Detection in Water

Abstract:Monitoring chemical levels is crucial for safeguarding both the environment and public health. Elevated levels of ammonia, for instance, can harm both humans and aquatic ecosystems, often indicating contamination from agriculture, industry, or sewage. Developing portable, high-resolution, and affordable methods for in situ monitoring of ammonia is thus imperative. Plasmonic sensors offer a promising solution, detecting ammonia by correlating changes in their optical response to the target analyte's concentration. While they are highly sensitive and can be fabricated in a variety of portable and user-friendly formats, some still require reagents or expensive optical equipment, which hinder their widespread adoption. Here, we present a self-assembled nanoplasmonic colorimetric sensor capable of directly detecting ammonia concentrations in aqueous matrices. The proposed sensor exploits the plasmonic resonance of the nanostructures to transduce changes in the chemical environment into alterations in color, offering a label-free method for real-time analysis. The sensor is fabricated using a self-assembling technique compatible with low-cost mass production based on aluminum and aluminum oxide, ensuring affordability and avoiding the use of other toxic chemicals. We developed a model to predict ammonia concentrations based on visible color change of the sensor, achieving a detection limit of 8.5 ppm. Furthermore, to address the need for on-site detection, we integrated smartphone technology for real-time color change analysis, eliminating the need for expensive, bulky optical instruments. Indeed, our approach offers a cost-effective, portable, and user-friendly solution for ammonia detection in water without the need for chemical reagents or spectrometers, making it ideal for field applications. Interestingly, this platform extends its applicability beyond ammonia detection, enabling the monitoring of various chemicals using a smartphone, without the need for any additional costly equipment.
A Disposable Multiplexed Chip for the Simultaneous Quantification of Key Parameters in Water Quality Monitoring

Abstract:On-site simultaneous quantification of multiple contaminants in a water body is challenging, especially for parameters requiring complicated chemical reactions to measure such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, and phosphate. A novel disposable multiplexed microfluidic device has been developed herein that allows the quantitative detection of up to five parameters at once. Solid reagent rather than commonly used liquid reagent was used to ensure long shelf life, and a "flow to dissolve" mechanism was provided accordingly for the thorough dissolution and mixing of a solid reagent on chip. Samples from river water and industrial wastewater were tested using the microfluidic chip, showing less than 15% deviation from results acquired with the traditional standard method. The test time though was only 1/6 of that required by the traditional method. In addition, the feasibility of using a smartphone to collect the colorimetric signal was discussed, and a data analysis method was provided for quantification purposes. Application of a smartphone based spectrophotometer for rapid in-field determination of nitrite and chlorine in environmental water samples

Abstract:In this paper, a low cost and portable smartphone-based spectrophotometer with the purpose of measuring trace levels of two important anions, chlorine and nitrite ions in water samples, is introduced. This home-made spectrophotometer is made of Plexiglas, equipped with two LEDs as a light source, and a piece of DVD is acted as light dispersing element. Battery of smartphone was used as its power supply and spectral analysis was performed by a free software downloadable from Google Playstore. By using this lightweight spectrophotometer, various environmental samples were analyzed for their NO2− and Cl2 content in field. Good detection limits of 5.00 × 10−2 mg L−1 and 8.60 × 10−3 mg L−1 were obtained for chlorine and nitrite, respectively. The linear range for chlorine was 1.00–4.00 mg L−1 and this range for nitrite was 0.05–1.20 mg L−1. Reproducibility as relative standard deviation for both chlorine and nitrite was better than 8.75%. In order to investigate validity of data, results were compared to standard methods of measuring chlorine and nitrite, using both spectrophotometry and commercial kits which showed no difference between results obtained. This very simple to use and inexpensive device can be used many times, so can be considered as a low-cost alternative to the detection device of commercial kits.
A novel paper-based colorimetric sensor using parylene C for Al (III) detection on a smartphone platform

Abstract:The paper-based analytical platforms have been applied in biochemical detection and environmental monitoring due to their low cost and easy operation. Despite their advantages, the complexity of fabrication has limited their further application. Here, a simple and innovative approach using parylene C, a material commonly used in semiconductors, is reported to fabricate paper-based chips and construct a point-of-care testing (POCT) platform through smartphones. Parylene C is deposited on the filter paper through a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) clamp and forms a hydrophobic barrier. A three-channel paper-based chip was utilized to detect aluminum (Al) ions on a smartphone platform by the chromogenic method. The color change after Al 3+ detection is represented with △E which was photographed and calculated by app on smartphone. The detection limit is 0.05 mg/L and the detection range is from 0.05 mg/L to 10 mg/L which indicates the application potential in the field of biochemical detection. This new paper-based sensing method and smartphone-based portable detection platform are simple, low-cost, fast, and highly sensitive, and provides a potential application for on-site, visual detection of ions and even other substances.

Abstract:Reliable field techniques for sensing and mapping environmental contamination has the potential to revolutionize environmental monitoring, among which smartphone-based sensors (SPSs) are playing an increasing role owing to the low cost and the widespread ownership of smartphone. How to integrate more functions on SPSs has been a hot field of research. In this study, a dual-functional SPS for colorimetric and chemiluminescence detection were developed through simple and efficient light path design within an integrated 3D-printed attachment, and the smartphone application design makes it possible for simpler analysis, storage and transmission of data. In colorimetric detection, due to the use of white LED and diffraction grating, this sensor could determinate samples in various color, and five contaminants, including fluoride, ammonia nitrogen, orthophosphate, turbidity, and chlorine, were detected with good reliability. The chemiluminescence determination of H2O2 indicated broader potential application fields. As a successful case study, this SPS was used to map the fluoride concentration of surface water in Suzhou (China) with good sensitivity (0.06 mg/L limit of detection, 0.1∼2 mg/L linear range). In summary, the dual-functional and on-site sensing capabilities of this SPS show prospects in the field of environmental monitoring, even in medical diagnosis, food safety and so on.

Abstract:We report a smartphone–paper-based sensor impregnated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs/CTAB) for determination of Fe3+ in water and blood plasma samples. The methodology for determination of Fe3+ is based on the change in signal intensity of AgNPs/CTAB fabricated on a paper substrate after the deposition of analyte, using a smartphone followed by processing with ImageJ software. The mechanism of sensing for detection and determination of Fe3+ is based on the discoloration of AgNPs which impregnated the paper substrate. The discoloration is attributed to the electron transfer reaction taking place on the surface of NPs in the presence of CTAB. Fe3+ was determined when the paper was impregnated with 1 mM AgNPs for 5 min of reaction time and the substrate was kept under acidic conditions. The linear range for determination of total iron in terms of Fe3+ was 50–900 μg L−1 with a limit of determination (LOD) of 20 μg L−1 and coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.2%. The good relative recovery of 91.3–95.0% and interference studies showed the selectivity of the method for determination of total iron in water and blood plasma samples. Smartphone–paper-based sensors have advantages of simplicity, rapidity, user-friendliness, low cost, and miniaturization of the method for on-site determination of total iron compared to methods that require sophisticated analytical instruments.

Abstract:Analysis of water and sand samples was done by reflectance measurements using a mobile phone. The phone's screen served as light source and front view camera as detector. Reflected intensities for white, red, green and blue colors were used to do principal component analysis for classification of several compounds and their concentrations in water. Analyses of colored solutions and colorimetric reactions based on widely available chemicals were performed. Classification of iron(III), chromium(VI) and sodium salt of humic acid was observed using reflected intensities from blue and green light for concentrations 2-10mg/l. Addition of complex forming sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacidic acid enabled the discrimination of Cu(II) ions in the 2-10mg/l concentration range based on reflection of red light. An alternate method using test strips for copper solutions with the phone as reader also demonstrated a detection limit of 2mg/l. Analysis of As(III) from 25 to 400 μg/l based on reflection of red light was performed utilizing the bleaching reaction of tincture of iodine containing starch. Enhanced sensitivity to low concentrations of arsenic was obtained by including reflected intensities from white light in the analysis. Model colored sand samples representing discoloration caused by the presence of arsenic in groundwater were analyzed as a complementary method for arsenic detection.

Abstract:In this work, a high integrated water detection system comprised a miniaturized and high precision homemade colorimeter, a microfluidic analysis module and a wireless module was reported. A reagent reaction based on the ammonium molybdate spectrophotometric method was recorded for the estimation of phosphate in natural water. A laser self-modulating module of 880 nm was used as the radiation source. A microfluidic chip was employed to fit the colorimeter with an optimized micro flow path for low liquid consumption and high precision detection. The wireless module consisted of two parts, using ZigBee and GSM modules to realize short and remote displaying and controlling. Applying a novel optimized algorithm, a wide linear response was obtained ranging from 0.02 up to 9.5 mg L-1. The optimization of colorimeterare mainly in the core detection part, allowing an improvement of the detection limit, achieving a result of 0.009 mg L-1. A low reagent consumption of 0.004 mg ascorbic acid and 0.011 mg ammonium molybdate for per determination was attained. Experimental results have also shown that the system could maintain good stability among broad room temperature changing from 17 °C to 35 °C with less energy consumption. The miniaturized colorimeter-based water detection system opens new avenue for operating in remote distance to get high precision measurements of phosphate in natural water.

Abstract:A smartphone-assisted determination of copper ions is introduced by using a down-scaled microfluidic mixer. The system was coupled with a micro-column packed with a periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material for preconcentration of copper ions. Copper ions were reduced to Cu(I) on-chip to selectively form an orange-colored complex with neocuproine. A novel Android-based software was made to determine the color change of the adsorbent by analyzing red-green-blue (RGB) components of images from the packed PMO material. Four porous framework materials with high porosity and chemical stability were synthesized and compared for the extraction of the Cu-neocuproine complex. The main parameters influencing the complex extraction efficiency were optimized. The analytical performance of the method showed limit of detection and quantification of 0.2 μg L −1 and 0.5 μg L −1 , respectively. The accuracy and precision of the method were determined as recovery > 92% and relative standard deviations < 5.2% at medium concentration level ( n = 5). Due to accumulation of the retained analyte in a single point and elimination of the stripping step, the RGB-based method showed sensitivity and precision higher than inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) for determination of copper ions. To investigate the applicability of the method, six different water samples were analyzed. The t- test on the data showed that the method has no significant difference when compared with ICP-AES determination.
