Abstract:Building on recent developments in electronic-structure methods, we define and calculate the flexoelectric response of two-dimensional (2D) materials fully from first principles. In particular, we show that the open-circuit voltage response to a flexural deformation is a fundamental linear-response property of the crystal that can be calculated within the primitive unit cell of the flat configuration. Applications to graphene, silicene, phosphorene, BN and transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers reveal that two distinct contributions exist, respectively of purely electronic and lattice-mediated nature. Within the former, we identify a key $metric$ term, consisting in the quadrupolar moment of the unperturbed charge density. We propose a simple continuum model to connect our findings with the available experimental measurements of the converse flexoelectric effect.

Abstract:We analytically derive the elastic, dielectric, piezoelectric, and the flexoelectric phenomenological coefficients as functions of microscopic model parameters such as ionic positions and spring constants in the two-dimensional square-lattice model with rock-salt-type ionic arrangement. Monte-Carlo simulation reveals that a difference in the given elastic constants of the diagonal springs, each of which connects the same cations or anions, is responsible for the linear flexoelectric effect in the model. We show the quadratic flexoelectric effect is present only in non-centrosymmetric systems and it can overwhelm the linear effect in feasibly large strain gradients.

Abstract:In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 216801 (2021)], the authors introduced the effective flexoelectric coefficient $\mu^\textrm{2D}$ for quantifying the flexoelectric effect in 2D systems, and reported a disagreement with the flexoelectric coefficient $\mu_\text{T}$ introduced in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Mat. 5, L030801 (2021)], attributed to the neglect of the metric term $\varphi^\text{M}$ -- quadrupolar moment of the unperturbed charge density -- in the formulation of Ref. [Phys. Rev. Mat. 5, L030801 (2021)]. Here, we show that the model in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Mat. 5, L030801 (2021)] is correct and is in agreement with that in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 216801 (2021)]. The discrepancies in the numerical values of the coefficients arise due to the difference in their definitions: $\mu_\textrm{T}$ measures changes in bending-induced out-of-plane polarization, whereas $\mu^\textrm{2D}$ measures changes in bending-induced voltage drop across the 2D system.

Abstract:In this Chapter we provide an overview of the current first-principles perspective on flexoelectric effects in crystalline solids. We base our theoretical formalism on the long-wave expansion of the electrical response of a crystal to an acoustic phonon perturbation. In particular, we recover the known expression for the piezoelectric tensor from the response at first order in wavevector ${\bf q}$, and then obtain the flexoelectric tensor by extending the formalism to second order in $\bf q$. We put special emphasis on the issue of surface effects, which we first analyze heuristically, and then treat more carefully by presenting a general theory of the microscopic response to an arbitrary inhomogeneous strain. We demonstrate our approach by presenting a full calculation of the flexoelectric response of a SrTiO$_3$ film, where we point out an unusually strong dependence of the bending-induced open-circuit voltage on the choice of surface termination. Finally, we briefly discuss some remaining open issues concerning the methodology and some promising areas for future research.

Abstract:Flexoelectricity is the linear response of polarization to a strain gradient. Here we address the simplest class of dielectrics, namely elemental cubic crystals, and we prove that therein there is no extrinsic (i.e. surface) contribution to flexoelectricity in the thermodynamic limit. The flexoelectric tensor is expressed as a bulk response of the solid, manifestly independent of surface configurations. Furthermore, we prove that the flexoelectric responses induced by a long-wavelength phonon and by a uniform strain gradient are identical.

Abstract:Flexoelectricity is an electromechanical coupling effect between the polarization and strain gradient in all dielectrics regardless of point group symmetry. Due to its significant influence on material behavior at the nanoscale, the flexoelectric effect has attracted more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, a real space phase field model for the flexoelectric effect in ferroelectric materials is developed by using isogeometric analysis (IGA). The IGA employs the same smooth and high-order basis functions to describe both the geometry of material and the solution of phase field, which is able to give an accurate and efficient description of the flexoelectric effect in ferroelectrics with arbitrary geometrical shapes and boundary conditions. To this end, phase field simulations on the effect of flexoelectricity are conducted for nanoscale ferroelectrics with different geometrical shapes and boundary conditions. The simulation results show that the flexoelectric effect has significant influence on the domain structures and domain switching of ferroelectric materials at the nanoscale. For ferroelectric nanobeam under bending load, due to the flexoelectric effect, the mechanical bending can break the symmetry of hysteresis loop between electric field and polarization. As for ferroelectric nanodots, the flexoelectric effect increases the magnitude of spontaneous polarizations and results in the tilting of polarization vortex. In addition, out-of-plane components appear in the polarization vortex of ferroelectric nanodots due to the flexoelectric effect, which increases the coercive field for the switching of polarization vortex and changes the switching process significantly. The present work not only presents an effective nonlocal model for the domain evolution in ferroelectric materials with the consideration of the flexoelectric effect, but also asymmetric hysteresis loop between polarization and external electric field for ferroelectric beam, and new switching behavior of the polarization vortex in ferroelectric nanodots due to the flexoelectric effect.

Abstract:Flexoelectricity becomes remarkable in nanoscale dielectrics where strong strain gradients are expected. The effect of flexoelectricity on elastic plane waves propagating in nanoscale layered phononic crystals is discussed in the current work. The fundamental governing equations and boundary conditions are derived from the virtual work principle. Detailed calculations are performed for nanoscale two-layered and three-layered phononic crystals using the transfer matrix method. Numerical results indicate that phononic crystals possess frequency pass bands and stop bands. For nanoscale layered phononic crystals, flexoelectricity increases the middle frequency regardless of the thickness ratio, whereas the flexoelectric effect on the bandwidth depends on the thickness ratio, which implies that there is an optimal thickness ratio to maximize the bandwidth. In addition, the middle frequency and bandwidth decrease with an increase in the unit cell thickness if the thickness ratio is fixed. Hence, considering the flexoelectric effect on band structures of nanoscale phononic crystals may provide guidance in manipulating elastic wave propagation and facilitate potential applications in phononic crystal devices.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. Flexoelectricity is a nanoscale phenomenon in dielectric crystals, where the mechanical loads resulting from the first strain gradient shares producing electricity. In this work, we present a numerical investigation for the plane strain problem of the dynamical flexoelectric effect in isotropic dielectrics. A surface loading based on the Sinc function, that is, sincπ(x), with a temporal exponentially decay, is applied to the upper surface of a semi-infinite dielectric crystal. Two cases for the electric potential are considered: (1) Open circuit, in which there is zero charge on the terminals; and (2) Short-circuit, where there is a given value for the potential of the terminals. This type of surface loading is often used in applications such as seismic analysis and electrical engineering, especially signal processing and digital signal processing. Also, it can be used to model other types of dynamic loads, such as wind or wave loads. Furthermore, this setting generates a two-dimensional formulation, known as the plane strain problem. Laplace and Fourier transform techniques are employed for solving the field equations. Suitable numerical techniques are implemented to present the solution to the physical domain. We choose the Strontium Titanate material (SrTiO3) for the two-dimensional simulation. Discussion for the behavior of the dynamical polarization, electric field, electric potential, and stresses is provided in the two-dimensional setting. Effects of the model parameters on electricity generation and behavior are studied.

Abstract:Flexoelectric effect, which is defined as strain gradient–induced polarization or electric gradient–induced strain in crystalline solids, can be presented as a fourth-rank tensor. The symmetry of the flexoelectric coefficients in matrix form is studied. The results indicate that the direct flexoelectric coefficients should be presented in 3 × 18 form and the converse flexoelectric coefficients in 6 × 9 form, rather than 6 × 6 form, like elastic constants. In addition, non-zero and independent elements in the matrices have been calculated for 32 point groups and 7 Ci groups. These results will provide valuable reference to the theoretical and application studies of flexoelectric effect.
