Abstract:We design porous silicon (Si) nanoparticles with both nanosize and porous structures via a simple alkaline etching method. The etching at grain boundaries and the anisotropic etching of the different crystal planes of the polycrystalline silicon are responsible for the homogeneous porous nanostructures. After the porous Si nanoparticles are coated with carbon layer, the composite delivering a discharge capacity of 1645.6 mAh g(-1) at 0.4 A g(-1) after 200 cycles, an outstanding discharge capacity of 861.5 mA g(-1) at 4 A g(-1) after 800 cycles with a high capacity retention of more than 65%, and a rate capacity of 904.7 mA g(-1) at 12.8 A g(-1). The porous nanoparticles show both the nanosize (similar to 100 nm) and the porous structure, which can furthest accommodate the large volume changes of the Si anode, resulting in the good electrochemical performance. The design of porous Si nanoparticles with a high yield of 93% may give a scalable, low-cost, and green approach for commercial silicon-based anodes of lithium-ion batteries. Abstract:Silicon plays an important role in the development of high-energy Lithium-ion batteries. However, the high volume expansion rate (>300%) makes it a commercially unfeasible independent Lithium-ion battery anode material. In this work, we adopt P and Sr complex modification and increase the cooling rate to refine the microstructure of Casting Al-20Si alloy, then acid etching Al-20Si alloy ingot to prepare porous silicon. The as-prepared silicon has a three-dimensional dendritic porous structure based on the SEM morphology characterization. The porous silicon electrode was prepared with Si powder: acetylene black: binder in a ratio of 2:1:1. The electrolyte solution was 1 M LiPF6/EC:EMC: DMC = 1:1:1 (V/V) with or without 5% FEC. In the electrolyte solution without 5% FEC, the first charge and discharge capacities of the porous silicon electrode are 2924.8 mAh/g and 1910.1 mAh/g, and the coulombic efficiency is about 65.31%. In the electrolyte solution with additive 5% FEC, the first charge and discharge capacities are 3444.6 mAh/g and 2469.5 mAh/g, respectively. Its first cycle coulombic efficiency is 72.19%. After adding 5% FEC into the electrolyte, the main component of SEI film is the decomposition product of FEC, which can effectively inhibit the decomposition of electrolyte solvent at a low potential and improve the specific capacity of the battery.

Abstract:Silicon is regarded as the next generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries because of its high specific capacity, low intercalation potential and abundant reserves. However, huge volume changes during the lithiation and delithiation processes and low electrical conductivity obstruct the practical applications of silicon anodes. In this study, a treble-shelled porous silicon (TS-P-Si) structure was synthesized via a three-step approach. The TS-P-Si anode delivered a capacity of 858.94 mA h g(-1) and a capacity retention of 87.8% (753.99 mA h g(-1)) after being subjected to 400 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g(-1). The good cycling performance was due to the unique structure of the inner silicon oxide layer, middle silver nano-particle layer and outer carbon layer, leading to a good conductivity and a decreased volume change of this silicon-based anode.
Scalable Preparation of Porous Silicon Nanoparticles and Their Application for Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Abstract:Nanostructured silicon has generated significant excitement for use as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries; however, more effort is needed to produce nanostructured silicon in a scalable fashion and with good performance. Here, we present a direct preparation of porous silicon nanoparticles as a new kind of nanostructured silicon using a novel two-step approach combining controlled boron doping and facile electroless etching. The porous silicon nanoparticles have been successfully used as high performance lithium-ion battery anodes, with capacities around 1,400 mA·h/g achieved at a current rate of 1 A/g, and 1,000 mA·h/g achieved at 2 A/g, and stable operation when combined with reduced graphene oxide and tested over up to 200 cycles. We attribute the overall good performance to the combination of porous silicon that can accommodate large volume change during cycling and provide large surface area accessible to electrolyte, and reduced graphene oxide that can serve as an elastic and electrically conductive matrix for the porous silicon nanoparticles.
Pomegranate-like silicon-based anodes self-assembled by hollow-structured Si/void@C nanoparticles for Li-ion batteries with high performances

Abstract:Silicon is considered as one of the most promising alternatives to the graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity (4200 mAh g(-1)). However, its fragile solid electrolyte interphase cannot tolerate the large volume changes of bare silicon induced by the lithium insertion and extraction, resulting in low Coulombic efficiency. In previous reports, a yolk-shell design, such as Si@void@C, in which the well-defined space allows the silicon particles to expand freely without breaking the outer carbon shells, can effectively improve the Columbic efficiency. Here, we design a pomegranate-like silicon-based anodes self-assembled by the hollow-structured Si/void@C nanoparticles, in which silicon and some voids are together sealed in the outer carbon shells, by the magnesiothermic reduction of the colloidal SiO2@PEI nanospheres prepared by the hydrolysis of the tetraethoxysilane under the catalytic effect of polyetherimide (PEI). Due to the tolerance of the presealed void in the carbon shells of the primary hollow-structured Si/void@C nanoparticles, the prepared pomegranate-like silicon-based anodes deliver a high reversible capacity of 1615 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and long cycle life of 73.5% capacity retention at 2 C after 500 cycles, as well as high Coulombic efficiency of 99%.

Abstract:Recently, silicon-based lithium-ion battery anodes have shown encouraging results, as they can offer high capacities and long cyclic lifetimes. The applications of this technology are largely impeded by the complicated and expensive approaches in producing Si with desired nanostructures. We report a cost-efficient method to produce nanoporous Si particles from metallurgical Si through ball-milling and inexpensive stain-etching. The porosity of porous Si is derived from particle's three-dimensional reconstructions by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography, which shows the particles' highly porous structure when etched under proper conditions. Nanoporous Si anodes with a reversible capacity of 2900 mAh/g was attained at a charging rate of 400 mA/g, and a stable capacity above 1100 mAh/g was retained for extended 600 cycles tested at 2000 mA/g. The synthetic route is low-cost and scalable for mass production, promising Si as a potential anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries with enhanced capacity and energy density.
Scalable Synthesis of Porous Silicon by Acid Etching of Atomized Al-Si Alloy Powder for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Si anodes have attracted considerable attention for their potential application in next-generation lithium-ion batteries because of their high specific capacity (Li15Si4, 3579 mAh g-1) and elemental abundance. However, Si anodes have not yet been practically applied in lithium-ion batteries because the volume change associated with lithiation and delithiation degrades their capacity during cycling. Instead of considering the active material, we focused on the structural design and developed a scalable process for producing Si anodes with excellent cycle characteristics while precisely controlling the morphology. Al-Si alloy powders were prepared by gas atomization, and porous Si with a skeletal structure was prepared by leaching Al using HCl. Porous Si (p-Si12, p-Si19) prepared from Al88Si12 and Al81Si19 comprised resinous eutectic Si, and porous Si (p-Si25) prepared from Al75Si25 comprised lumpy primary Si and resinous eutectic Si. The porosity of the Si anodes varied from 63% to 76%, depending on the Si composition. The p-Si19 anode displayed the finest pore distribution (20-200 nm), excellent rate characteristics, a reversible discharge capacity of 1607 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at a rate of 0.1 C with a Coulombic efficiency of over 97%, and high stability. The performances of the p-Si25 and p-Si19 electrodes began to decrease after 250 and 850 cycles, respectively, with a constant-charge capacity of 1000 mAh g-1 and at a rate of 0.2 C. In contrast, the p-Si12 anode maintained its discharge capacity at 1000 mAh g-1 for up to 1000 cycles without degradation. Therefore, the developed manufacturing process is expected to produce porous Si as an active material in lithium-ion batteries for high capacity and long life at an industrial scale.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is regarded as the most prominent anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical specific capacity. However, Si-based anodes suffer from fast capacity degradation caused by drastic volume expansion/contraction during repeated charge/discharge process and accompanying internal mechanical strain. Herein, we report a new dealloying strategy to synthesize a dual network porous Si/Al9FeSi3/Fe2O3 composite, which can release the internal stress and accommodate the volume changes of the anode during cycling. The anode presents a high Li storage capability, revealing an excellent reversible capacity of 1100 mAh g − 1 at 200 mA g − 1 for 150 cycles and 378 mAh g − 1 at 4000 mA g − 1 for 500 cycles. Such outstanding Li storage properties can be attributed to the special dual network porous structure and compositing the materials with high and low theoretical capacities. The work provides a new route to design and prepare low-price and high-performance Si-based anodes, which opens new avenues for the technical progress in dealloying preparation and the development of advanced high performance anode materials.

Abstract:Nanostructured silicon-based materials with porous structures have recently been found to be impressive anode materials with high capacity and cycling performance for lithium-ion batteries. However, the current methods of preparing porous silicon have generally been confronted with the requirement for multiple steps and complex synthesis. In the present study, porous silicon with high surface area was prepared by using a high yielding and simple reaction in which commercial magnesium powder readily reacts with HSiCl3 with the help of an amine catalyst under mild conditions. The obtained porous silicon was coated with a nitrogen-doped carbon layer and used as the anode for lithium-ion batteries. The porous Si-carbon nanocomposites exhibited excellent cycling performance with a retained discharge capacity of 1300 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at 1 A g(-1) and a discharge capacity of 750 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1) after 250 cycles. Remarkably, the Coulombic efficiency was maintained at nearly 100 % throughout the measurements.
A Porous Li-Al Alloy Anode toward High-Performance Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Compared to lithium (Li) anode, the alloy/Li-alloy anodes show more compatible with sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs), and are promising candidates for practical SSE-based all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs). In this work, a porous Li-Al alloy (LiAl-p) anode is crafted using a straightforward mechanical pressing method. Various characterizations confirm the porous nature of such anode, as well as rich oxygen species on its surface. To the best knowledge, such LiAl-p anode demonstrates the best room temperature cell performance in comparison with reported Li and alloy/Li-alloy anodes in SSE-based ASSLBs. For example, the LiAl-p symmetric cells deliver a record critical current density of 6.0 mA cm-2 and an ultralong cycling of 5000 h; the LiAl-p|LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cells achieve a high areal capacity of 11.9 mAh cm-2 and excellent durability of 1800 cycles. Further in situ and ex situ experiments reveal that the porous structure can accommodate volume changes of LiAl-p and ensure its integrity during cycling; and moreover, a robust Li inorganics-rich solid electrolyte interphase can be formed originated from the reaction between SSE and surface oxygen species of LiAl-p. This study offers inspiration for designing high-performance alloy anodes by focusing on designing special architecture to alleviate volume change and constructing stable interphase.

Abstract:Silicon is a promising anode material for next generation lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity and low discharge potential. Commercial silicon anodes are normally integrated with high graphite content to overcome their low electrical conductivity and huge cycling-induced volume change. However, this weakens the high specific capacity advantage of the silicon anode. Herein, a facile method based on the dealloying reaction of Mg2Si with CO2 and B2O3 was demonstrated for the synthesis of porous boron-doped silicon with low carbon content (pBSi-LC). Furthermore, the pBSi-LC anode showed high initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.3%, excellent rate performance (reversible capacity of 842 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 5A g(-1)), and long cycle stability (reversible capacity of 860 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1) after 250 cycles).
Scalable 3D porous residual Al-doped Si/SiOx composites for high performance anodes: Coupling effects of porosity, conductive sites and oxide layer

Abstract:The micron-sized porous residual Al-doped Si/SiOx composite (∼ 6 μm) for high performance anodes is synthesized by the scalable method of dealloying corrosion. The porosity of the ideal porous structure PSi9 with inner 3D interconnected channels is 82.04 %, which can buffer enormous volume expansion of Si. The thickness of the outer SiOx/Si layer on the surface of porous Si is approximately 10 nm, which can decrease the surface contact between the Si and electrolyte, and further buffer the volume change. The composition and proportion changes of Si at different depths of the SiOx/Si layer are analyzed based on Ar ion etching and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The proportions of Si4+/Si0, Si3+, and Si4+ decrease as corrosion depth increase, and the corresponding proportion of Si0 with reversible capacity increases from 15.37 % to 74.61 %, which can undergo alloying/dealloying reaction with Li+ and further improve the electrical performance. The best initial discharge and charge capacities of porous residual Al-doped Si/SiOx composite at 1.0 Ag-1 are 3058.7 and 2364.4 mAhg-1, those can reach 903.2, and 899.7 mAhg-1 after 300 cycles, which display attractive application prospects for lithium ion batteries

In our study, a porous Si/Fe2O3 dual network anode was fabricated using the melt-spinning, ball-milling and dealloying method. The anode material shows good electrochemical performance, delivering a reversible capacity of 697.2 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles. The high Li storage property is ascribed to the rich mesoporous distribution of the dual network structure, which may adapt the volume variation of the material during the lithiation/delithiation process, shorten the Li-ion diffusion distance and improve the electron transport speed. This study offers a new idea for developing natural ferrosilicon ores into the porous Si-based materials and may prompt the development of natural ores in energy storage fields.

Abstract:Silicon is a potential anode material for Li battery due to its high theoretical specific capacity (4200 mAh g −1 ). However, Si is hampered for practical application in Li-battery due to its enormous volume alternation causing instability. Herein, we demonstrated a novel carbon-coated porous structure (/Si-G) synthesized by uniformly wrapping Si into pitch pyrolytic carbon shells and then in-situ removing the sodium chloride template can overcome the bottleneck. It is worth noting that our process for /Si-G also offers a simple route for cost down and mass production of anode material. The /Si-G anodes exhibit an excellent capacity of 1082.7 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 200 cycles. Furthermore, it holds a high capacity retention of 81.9 % after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. We found that /Si-G composite only rises about 41% volumetric expansion during 500 operation cycles. This can effectively avoid direct contact between silicon and electrolyte to form a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. Especially, practical application of the /Si-G anode is demonstrated in a full cell pairing with LiNi 0.3 Co 0.3 Mn 0.3 O 2 cathode. The full cell presents great cycle retention of 90.1 % at 0.2 C after 100 cycles and a high energy density (446 Wh kg −1 ).

Porous Carbon-Coated Silicon Composites for High Performance Lithium-Ion Batterie Anode

Abstract:With the rapid development of silicon-based lithium-ion battery anode, the commercialization process highlights the importance of low-cost and short-flow production processes. The porous carbon/silicon composites (C/Si) are prepared by one-step calcination using zinc citrate and nano-silicon as the primary raw materials at a temperature of 950 degrees C. In this composite, silicon nanoparticles are coated with a porous carbon shell with an average pore diameter of 4.49 nm, which improves the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the anode. Density-functional theory calculations show that the porous carbon enhances the electrical conductivity, facilitates the interlayer migration of Li-ion, and strengthens the gain effect of stress on conductivity. Additionally, stress further reduces the diffusion barriers of Li-ion. The porous C/Si anode demonstrates outstanding specific capacity and rate capability, maintaining a stable specific capacity of 1170 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 after 100 cycles and retaining a reversible specific capacity of 944 mAh/g even at a charging current density of 2 A g-1. The carbon/silicon anode materials prepared using this strategy present a streamlined manufacturing process and exceptional performance, as well as avoiding the post-washing step, providing a pathway toward the scalable application of silicon-based anodes.

The ant-nest-like porous silicon comprising three-dimensional interconnected silicon nanoligaments and bicontinuous nanopores can prevent pulverization and accommodate volume expansion during cycling resulting in negligible particle-level outward expansion. The carbon-coated porous silicon anode delivers a high capacity of 1,271 mAh g−1 at 2,100 mA g−1 with 90% capacity retention after 1,000 cycles and has a low electrode swelling of 17.8% at a high areal capacity of 5.1 mAh cm−2. The full cell with the prelithiated silicon anode and Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O2 cathode boasts a high energy density of 502 Wh Kg−1 and 84% capacity retention after 400 cycles. This work provides insights into the rational design of alloy anodes for high-energy batteries.

Abstract:In exploring the anode materials for high efficiency Li-ion batteries, it has been found that the electrochemical performance of Si can be enhanced via alloying with Ge. In the present work, we modified the Al–Si–Ge eutectic ribbons as the precursor by adding a trace of Sr to the alloy. The SiGe particles obtained by dealloying the Al–Si–Ge eutectic precursor have a porous coral-like nano-architecture with numerous fibrous branches towards various directions. Because of the large surface area and porosity, the as-prepared Sr-modified SiGe anode delivers an excellent capacity of 1166.6 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 100 cycles with a fantastic initial coulombic efficiency of 83.62%. Besides, it has a superior rate performance with a reversible capacity of 675.3 mA h g −1 at the current density of 8 A g −1 . It is demonstrated that the modification treatment that is widely used in metallurgy is also a promising strategy to synthesize high-performance battery electrodes and other energy storage materials.

Abstract:Silicon-based materials are expected to be the next generation anode for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity (4200 mAh g -1 ) and abundant natural reserves. However, volume expansion (∼300%) and low conductivity issues hinder the further application of silicon-anode materials. Nano-sizing/confinement and the Si@C core-shell techniques are usually employed to depress volume expansion and enhance electrical conductivity of silicon anodes. However, the so-called "island effect" of nanoparticles and the loss of connection between the carbon shell and silicon core can lead to the degradation of electrochemical performance. In this work, nanoporous silicon (pSi) was prepared by means of magnesiothermic reduction of silicon aerogel as a precursor. The pSi is encapsulated by polydopamine (PDA) and then cross-linked by sodium alginate (SA) to form a three-dimensional network structure. It can effectively depress the drastic swelling-shrinking of silicon, avoid the "island effect" of silicon particles, and provide many effective conductive channels. The prepared Si@PDA-SA composite electrode delivers an initial discharge capacity of 3128 mAh g -1 and an initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 82.8%. At a current density of 2000 mA g -1 , the reversible capacity of 820 mAh g -1 can be retained after 700 cycles. With enhanced mechanical properties and optimal link of the silicon particles, the gradual detachment of silicon particles from the adhesive can be effectively inhibited during long-term cycles. It offers the silicon anode superior cycling stability. Such a facile synthesis process and optimal electrochemical performance have laid a solid foundation for the large-scale application of silicon anode electrodes.
