Abstract:Incoherent scatter radar (ISR), as one of the most powerful ionospheric detection methods on the ground, can obtain a variety of important ionospheric parameters with high spatiotemporal resolution over the entire ionosphere. A high-power large-aperture phased array (PA) ISR, named Sanya ISR (SYISR), is under construction at Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E), China. Two remote receive-only arrays of SYISR will be built in the future to form a tristatic ISR system, which will be the only multistatic ISR in a low-latitude region. Estimating the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is the key task for analyzing the detection accuracy and evaluating the radar performance. In this article, the SNR of the SYISR tristatic system is simulated for the first time using a suitable PA bistatic radar equation. The parameters of the designed SYISR tristatic system are used in the simulation. Subsequently, the SNR spatial variability of the bistatic PA radar and bistatic equivalent parabolic dish (EPD) radar is analyzed and compared. The results show that the radar system constants, effective scattering volume, and spatial variable terms are the three different sources of factors affecting the SNR. They jointly determine the spatial distribution characteristics of the SNR. Moreover, the PA SNR is significantly different from the EPD SNR numerically and morphologically. The PA SNR is weaker than the EPD SNR in the whole observational space. In the horizontal direction, the PA SNR has a single-peak structure, while the EPD SNR has a double-peak structure. The root cause of these differences is that the beamwidth of a PA changes with the beam directions, while that of the EPD is fixed. This research provides a theoretical basis for the design of tristatic PA ISR in hardware optimization and error analysis, which will be shown in another article.

Abstract:Low latitude ionosphere experiences complex dynamical and electrodynamical processes, which make the spatiotemporal variations of the corresponding electron density complicated and therefore influence trans‐ionosphere radio communications. The monitoring of low latitude dynamical drivers, such as neutral wind and ionospheric electric field, is essential for both dynamic mechanism investigations and applications. The Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar Tristatic System (SYISR‐TS) was proposed with the main objective of low latitude ionospheric monitoring and investigation and has been successfully developed over the past decade. The system consists of the Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E) trans‐receiving main station with key parameters of ∼1,600 m2 antenna aperture, >4 MW peak power, <120 K system noise temperature, and ∼46 dBi normal gain, and Danzhou (19.5°N, 109.1°E) and Wenchang (19.6°N, 110.8°E) receiving only stations with key parameters of ∼790 m2 antenna aperture, <130 K system noise temperature, and ∼43 dBi normal gain. Three stations form a quasi‐equilateral triangle at Hainan Island and use Global Navigation Satellite System satellite common view technique to achieve the time synchronization with the uncertainty of the timing and time synchronization less than 50 and 10 ns, respectively. Initial collaborative satellite tracking and ionospheric common volume experiments among three stations have confirmed the detection ability of SYISR‐TS and the feasibility of achieving its scientific goals in the future.

Abstract:The incoherent scattering radar (ISR) is the only ground device on Earth that can detect the parameters of the ionospheric plasma because of its large detection range, high detection accuracy, and high spatial resolution. The prototype ISR system of Nanchang University has been completed now. Compared to the existing ISR systems in the world, which have a high radio frequency (RF) power and antenna array, high power consumption, expensive equipment operation, and maintenance costs, the radar has the advantages of low power consumption, low cost, and modularity. This radar system uses novel techniques of software-defined radio (SDR) and active phased array antennas to detect changes in the ionosphere. This article introduces the system design and antenna array of the software-defined radar prototype. The built-in radar transmitting and receiving equipment and specific radar parameters are described in detail and the radar detection results under different detection conditions are presented.

Abstract:The Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) is a newly built active digital phased array, all solid‐state transmitting and digital receiving incoherent scatter radar in Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E). The radar frequency band is from 430 to 450 MHz. The Sanya site is a low latitude station in China dedicated for ionospheric investigation. Meanwhile, SYISR is also suitable for detecting a wide range of space debris because of its high power and flexible beam steering ability. In this paper, we first calculate the detectable lower limit size of space debris with respect to integration time and range based on SYISR parameters through theoretical simulation. Then, we selected several typical space debris, with a size near the theoretical detectable lower limit, to perform the experiment. We found that the estimated radar cross section versus range accorded well with the theoretical curve, which confirmed our simulation. Specifically, the detectable lower limit size of space debris is ∼8 cm in a range of 1,000 km given a threshold signal‐to‐noise ratio of 14 dB. This value decreases to ∼3 cm if a 200‐ms coherent integration is implemented. We further performed several experiments on objects with different inclinations using signals with 0.3 and 4 MHz under both static staring and tracking modes. In comparison with the two‐line element file predicted raw orbit, the tracking error of 0.3 and 4 MHz are 7 km and 400 m, respectively, without coherent integration in the processing. The study expands the function of the SYISR and should be beneficial to our ionospheric data inversion given the frequent occurrence of space debris around the SYISR.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic terahertz (THz) radar based on trilateration for fast three-dimensional (3D) positioning, showing the advantages including high range resolution and incoherent signal processing properties. By using flexibly reconfigurable photonic THz radar source, double-frequency THz generation and incoherent trilateration algorithms, we generate a THz radar signal occupying 280 GHz-320 GHz and achieve 3D positioning of corner reflectors with 3.2 mm maximum error over a distance of 0.6 m. The system shows great potential in applications such as indoor positioning and smart driving.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radar has been considered as a new solution to the dilemmas in performing ultra-high-resolution imaging and obtaining highly precise target information. In this work, a photonic THz interference inverse synthetic aperture radar (THz InISAR) scheme is proposed and proof-of-concept experimentally demonstrated, targeting high resolution positioning of multiple targets. We employ an optical frequency comb and a uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) to photonically generate a linear frequency-modulation (LFM) signal at 290--310 GHz. By using the anti-electromagnetic-interference THz photonic signal source, broadband THz transceivers and efficient InISAR algorithms, 3D positioning of corner reflectors over a distance of 2.2 m at the 300 GHz band is successfully achieved, reaching a resolution of 8 mm for both range and azimuth dimensions, and a maximum height error of 0.4 mm in a height range of 11 cm. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed system represents the ever-first accurate 3D positioning at the THz band above 300 GHz, revealing the great potential applications of THz radar systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and simulation of a 64-element low-profile dual-polarized receive phased array antenna system with four independent reconfigurable beams for Ka-band low-earth-orbit satellite communication (SATCOM). Single-aperture-integrated multi-beam array systems induce great electrical, thermal, physical, and process challenges due to the extremely limited layout space requirements. To tackle the above problems, an 18-layer high-density hybrid laminated printed circuit board stack-up is utilized. A slot-fed dual-polarized patch antenna array with feed rotation is designed and simulated to guarantee polarization diversity within a simple geometry. Dedicated onboard multi-layer-embedded 4 × 16:1 Wilkinson combining networks are proposed and optimized to facilitate compact multi-beam forming. Simulated results show that the proposed array can synthesize four separate beams scanning up to ±50° in the azimuth plane with low loss and high isolation across 27.5−32 GHz. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a planar phased array supporting four simultaneously reconfigurable beams for Ka-band SATCOM.

Potential direct observation of meteoroid fragmentation by a high range resolution radar

Abstract:In the development of Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar (SYISR), which is a major scientific instrument project founded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), we established a prototype system of 8 subarrays (named SYISR-8 hereafter), including 256 transceiver modules totally, beginning in July 2018 to verify the functions of the radar. Based on SYISR-8, we configured the system to detect the meteor echo with high range resolution. During a continuous observation interval of 16 h, 55 meteor echo events were found. Among these events, 34 cases were head echoes, 18 cases were specular trail echoes, and 3 cases were head echo and nonspecular trail echo concurrent events. We have observed 2 potential direct meteoroid fragmentation cases of all 55 meteor events. It demonstrates that potential direct observation of meteoroid fragmentation could be observed by a relatively small aperture and power using pulse compression processing. However, the occurrence ratio of meteoroid fragmentation in our experiment is approximately 6%, which is considerably lower than that observed in previous studies, which needs further investigation.

Abstract:As the first advanced modular phase array incoherent scatter radar (ISR) established in the Eastern Hemisphere at low latitudes, Sanya ISR (SYISR) can measure the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity of ion drift in multiple directions, potentially yielding the spatial distribution of ionospheric plasma drift. Three beam-scanning modes are designed for plasma drift detection: meridian, zonal and cross-shaped (both meridian and zonal) plane, which will provide the distribution of plasma drift in latitude/longitude as well as altitude. The altitude profile of plasma drift and the first presented distribution of low latitude plasma drift in the meridian plane for March to May 2021 are inversed through LOS velocity using cross-shaped and meridian beam-scanning modes, respectively. A statistical correlation coefficient between the vpn and crest-to-trough ratio (CTR) of equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) TEC and a case study of magnetic storm response in plasma drift show that the inversed plasma drift can be a good indicator in response to the changes in atmospheric tide and solar wind at different time scales and explain the corresponding ionospheric electron density variations at low and equatorial latitudes. This study proves that the SYISR-measured plasma drift is reliable and will play an important role in the atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetospheric coupling study in the East Asian region.

A 24-Ghz Low-Cost Continuous Beam Steering Phased Array for Indoor Smart Radar

Abstract:A 24-GHz phased array for indoor smart radar is proposed in this paper. This array consists of 6 horizontally placed antenna elements. Each antenna element is a vertically placed 5-element series-fed microstrip patch array. The beam of the phased array can be continuously steered on the H-plane to different directions through a novel vector control array. Each element of the vector control array can adjust the phase and amplitude of the corresponding element of the horizontally placed linear array. The whole phased array system is fabricated on a single printed circuit board (PCB). PIN diodes are used to realize beam steering by modulating the decomposed received signal. In order to compensate for the loss of the vector control array and reduce the noise figure, six low noise amplifiers (LNAs) are also used in the array. This proposed phased array system features a lower cost than conventional solutions based on phase shifters. The principle of the proposed vector control array is discussed, and simulation shows this system has the ability to continuously steer the beam on the H-plane.
24-Ghz Biomedical Radar on Flexible Substrate for ISAR Imaging

Abstract:A 24-GHz radar system for biomedical applications is designed, fabricated, and tested. The proposed radar system includes a flexible radio frequency (RF) board and a rigid baseband board. The RF board integrates two 4×4 patch arrays, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), two low noise amplifiers (LNA), and a six-port structure. The baseband board has baseband amplifiers as well as an on-board sawtooth voltage generator (SVG). The SVG generates a 155-Hz sawtooth voltage signal to control the VCO. A 450-MHz bandwidth frequency ramp with a center frequency around 24 GHz is transmitted. With the proposed radar system, the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging method is used to track moving targets in a crowded environment with stationary clutter. The theory of ISAR imaging is detailed in this paper. Two experiments were carried out to reveal the capabilities of the radar system in tracking single and multiple moving targets. The radar system is featured as being flexible and portable. The complete radar system has overall dimensions of 118mm×45mm×15mm.
The Effect of Space Objects on Ionospheric Observations: Perspective of SYISR

Abstract:Space objects around the Earth are a potential pollution source for ground-based radio observations. The Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) is a newly built active digital phased array, all solid-state transmitting and digital receiving incoherent scatter radar in Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E), with the main purpose of ionospheric monitoring and investigations. In this study, we presented the effect of the greatly increased number of space objects on ionospheric observations through SYISR. Firstly, we showed the space object pollution on the range-time-intensity (RTI), autocorrelation function (ACF)/power spectra, and ionosphere parameter of SYISR measurements. An altitude of around 600 km is the region where space objects occur most frequently. Then, we eliminated the space object pollution using the traditional smallest of constant-false-alarm-rate (SO-CFAR) algorithm. However, pollution from smaller space objects remains, whose reflected echo is comparable to or lower than the background ionosphere, which results in unrealistic retrieved ionospheric electron density. Furthermore, we quantitatively assessed the space object effect based on the current space object orbit database and simulation. The pollution should linearly increase with the increase in the number of space objects in the future. Among the space objects, whose radar cross section (RCS) and orbit information are now published, there still exist ~9000 (~37% of the total number) space objects, whose effect is difficult to eliminate. This study is beneficial to the data process of SYISR and has implications for similar types of ionospheric observations by radar.

Abstract:The plasma lines observed by Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) are dependent on the enhancement of Langmuir waves due to superthermal photoelectrons generated by solar EUV radiation. The plasma line power spectrum can be obtained using long-pulse and alternating-code transmission signals during the period from sunrise to noon almost every day. For the power spectrum of the long pulse, the CLEAN algorithm that has been applied in this field is used to verify the feasibility of this method for SYISR in only a few cases. However, it is difficult to deal with alternating code with such a low SNR using the general deconvolution method. The irreversible-migration filtering (IMF) method has been developed to separate signal noise from the measurements of the alternating code. Some experimental results from the SYISR measurements validate the excellent performance of the IMF method for alternating code. Additionally, an example observation of the electron density with a high time and range resolution is derived. The results show that plasma line detection can be a powerful new observational capability for SYISR as an ionospheric experimental mode for ionospheric calibration, when possible, which can be simultaneously measured with the ion line for constant radar calibration in the standard fitting of the ion line.

Abstract:This paper introduces a W-band phased electromagnetic surface radar system. This phased electromagnetic surface works at 92～96 GHz and is manufactured with general PCB technology and processing accuracy requirements. The appropriate unit design makes the DC bias voltage of each PIN diode on the phased electromagnetic surface controlled for the current reversal purpose at a low cost and portability. A 180° phase shift of the unit cell can be provided as the current direction on the unit cell is reversed. Beam scanning in different directions can be formed when inputting the right spatial codes. This transmission type phased electromagnetic surface with the ability of beam scanning is used as the receiving antenna of the radar system. This paper presents a W-band phased electromagnetic surface radar system and its manufacture and measurement results, which are fundamental to further research of precision guidance, target identification, and imaging.

Abstract:This article introduces the experiment design for Moon imaging based on Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) and algorithm research in data processing. The peak power of SYISR is 2 MW. The transmitted frequency used for Moon imaging experiments is 430 MHz. We conducted Moon imaging experiments using two types of waveforms, 13-bit Barker code, and linear frequency modulation (LFM) chirp. Considering both resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the use of an LFM chirp with a bandwidth of 0.3 MHz and a pulsewidth of 2 ms can give higher SNR and resolution for Moon imaging using SYISR. Several key techniques were applied in the experiment design and data processing: 1) for the reliability of the imaging algorithm, the range-Doppler imaging algorithm commonly used in synthetic aperture imaging was applied; 2) to avoid the sidelobe effect of the 13-bit Barker code matched filter, a sidelobe-free filter was used; and 3) to mitigate the problem of "north–south ambiguity," mosaic imaging of the Doppler northern and southern hemispheres of the nearside of the Moon was adopted. Two types of imaging results are obtained: mosaic images of the northern and southern hemispheres of the Moon and local regional images. The results demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of Moon imaging based on SYISR, which enables potential further lunar geology investigations in the future.

Abstract:A pulsed chirping phased-array transceiver (TRX) is demonstrated for X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application. The phased-array TRX is implemented on a single CMOS chip with beamsteering/beamforming capabilities. The chip-scale radar TRX is composed of four transmitters (TXs) and four receivers (RXs) operating at 10-GHz center frequency with 1-GHz bandwidth (BW). To achieve the wideband beamsteering with a fine angle step, the two-stage delay control in the TX is proposed, where a delay-locked loop (DLL) -based multi-phase synthesizer (MPS) is used to control the coarse true-time delay of the baseband chirp, and the active phase shifters (PS) in radio frequency (RF) path are used for fine phase tuning. Fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS technology, the TRX consumes 228 mW for each channel at a 1.2-V supply, delivering ~10.2-dBm power with <1.3-dB ripple. The delay-line test shows that the dechirped signal achieves −13-dB peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSLR) and the phase coherence error is within ±1.2° at a chirp rate of 1 MHz/ $mu text{s}$ . The prototype phased-array radar TRX chip is demonstrated with the antenna arrays consisting of Vivaldi antennas of 8-dBi gain, 6-GHz BW, and 6-cm pitch distance. Experiments indicate that beamsteering/beamforming up to ±60° with a step of ~1° is achieved. SAR imaging experiment is carried out based on both the two-stage beamsteering in the TXs and the digital beamforming in the RXs, proving the capability of the prototype phased-array radar TRX chip for the SAR imaging applications.
