Abstract:The radar-centric terahertz integrated sensing and communication (THz-ISAC) is identified as a significant application in future wireless access networks. Up to date, previously reported demonstrations regarding radar sensing performance lack sufficient support in a complex environment with a strong target masking effect. This work tacks this problem by proposing a radar-centric waveform combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and phase shift keying (PSK). We first derive sensing metrics of the LFM-PSK waveform through theoretical analysis, including range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Then a proof-of-concept experiment on a photonics-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at 330 with 18 GHz bandwidth is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed LFM-PSK waveform. In the experiment, the proposed waveform can reach a PSLR of up to 20.9 dB and a range resolution of 1.3 cm, simultaneously accommodating a data transmission of 6 Gbit/s. In addition, the effect of embedding symbols on sensing metrics is also discussed, and by comparing the range solution and PSLR with various data rates, around $\sim $ 6 dB gain in the PSLR without any deterioration of range resolution is observed.

Abstract:We present a photonics-based bandwidth doubling technology for generating broadband terahertz (THz) radar signals. Our proposed approach addresses the challenges of high sampling rates and system instability in THz radar applications. In the experiment, we achieve a record range resolution of 2.5 mm and demonstrate over 95% accuracy in recognizing gestures through obstructions.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radar has been considered as a new solution to the dilemmas in performing ultra-high-resolution imaging and obtaining highly precise target information. In this work, a photonic THz interference inverse synthetic aperture radar (THz InISAR) scheme is proposed and proof-of-concept experimentally demonstrated, targeting high resolution positioning of multiple targets. We employ an optical frequency comb and a uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) to photonically generate a linear frequency-modulation (LFM) signal at 290--310 GHz. By using the anti-electromagnetic-interference THz photonic signal source, broadband THz transceivers and efficient InISAR algorithms, 3D positioning of corner reflectors over a distance of 2.2 m at the 300 GHz band is successfully achieved, reaching a resolution of 8 mm for both range and azimuth dimensions, and a maximum height error of 0.4 mm in a height range of 11 cm. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed system represents the ever-first accurate 3D positioning at the THz band above 300 GHz, revealing the great potential applications of THz radar systems.

Abstract:Integrated sensing and communication (ISaC) in the terahertz band can efficiently reduce the consumption of hardware and spectrum resources, while improving the transmission data rate and sensing resolution.Firstly, the development status of ISaC, terahertz communication and sensing were briefly introduced.Then, the strategy of waveform design and optimization for ISaC and the receiving signal processing algorithms were presented.As an example, an OFDM ISaC system operating at 97 GHz was experientially demonstrate, and the performance of ranging, speed and communication were all evaluated in the experiment.Finally, the key issues and research directions of future terahertz ISaC development were discussed.

Abstract:The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a promising technology to simultaneously perform high-capacity communication and high-accuracy sensing with efficient resource utilization. Nevertheless, due to the severe mutual constraints between communication and sensing functions, the performance of previously reported ISAC demonstrations notably trails that of individual communication or sensing systems. In this work, an integrated LFM-QAM waveform is proposed and theoretically analyzed by combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Employing the proposed waveform and optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique, we experimentally implement a multi-channel photonic terahertz (THz)-ISAC wireless system operating at 275 GHz band, simultaneously achieving a communication data rate up to 120 Gbps and a range resolution as high as 2.5 mm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate beyond 100 Gbps wireless data rate and mm-scale resolution based on an integrated waveform in the THz region, revealing the potential of THz-ISAC performance.

Abstract:Converged communication and radar sensing systems have attained increasing attention in recent years.The development of converged radar-data systems is reviewed,with a special focus on millimeter/terahertz systems as a promising trend.Firstly,we present historical development and convergence technology concept for communication-radar systems,and highlight some emerging technologies in this area.We then provide an updated and comprehensive survey of several converged systems operating in different microwave and millimeter frequency bands,by providing some selective typical communication and radar sensing systems.In this part,we also summarize and compare the system performance in terms of maximum range/range resolution for radar mode and Bit Error Rate（BER）/wireless distance for communication mode.In the last section,the convergence of millimeter/terahertz communication-radar system is concluded by analyzing the prospect of millimeter-wave/terahertz technologies in providing ultrafast data rates and high resolution for our smart future.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic terahertz (THz) radar based on trilateration for fast three-dimensional (3D) positioning, showing the advantages including high range resolution and incoherent signal processing properties. By using flexibly reconfigurable photonic THz radar source, double-frequency THz generation and incoherent trilateration algorithms, we generate a THz radar signal occupying 280 GHz-320 GHz and achieve 3D positioning of corner reflectors with 3.2 mm maximum error over a distance of 0.6 m. The system shows great potential in applications such as indoor positioning and smart driving.

Abstract:With the explosion of wireless data rates, the terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) is envisioned as a promising candidate to break the existing bandwidth bottleneck and satisfy the ever-increasing capacity demand. The THz wireless communications feature a number of attractive properties, such as potential terabit-per-second capacity and high energy efficiency. In this paper, an overview on the state-of-the-art THz communications is studied, with a special focus on key technologies of THz transceivers and THz communication systems. The recent progress on both electronic and photonic THz transmitters are presented, and then the THz receivers operating in direct- and heterodyne reception modes are individually surveyed. Based on the THz transceiver schemes, three kinds of THz wireless communication systems are reviewed, including solid-state electronic systems, photonics-assisted systems and all-photonics systems. The prospective key enabling technologies, corresponding challenges and research directions for lighting up high-speed THz communication systems are discussed as well.

Abstract:In recent years, remarkable achievements have been witnessed in developing terahertz (THz) communication systems with high data rates. However, the analyzers/receivers of most THz communication systems still heavily rely on electronic circuits with limited bandwidth, obstructing the further exploration of THz resource. In this work, an equivalent-time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) is proposed for capturing high-speed THz signals. The PCA is excited by ultrashort optical pulses from a low repetition-rate mode-locked laser (MLL) and hence alternates the sampling of high-speed THz signals into low-frequency domain. The proposed ETS system for THz signals is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proof-of-concept experiment, an on-off keying (OOK) signal with a baud rate of 15 Gbaud are successfully sampled and evaluated. The proposed THz ETS system can be easily accessible by low-speed electronics, which is expected to bring new opportunities for high-speed THz time-domain analyzer.

Abstract:We experimentally characterize a ultrabroadband terahertz (THz) impulse radio system with up to 10 GHz repetition rate. THz generation and radiation are realized in an antenna-integrated uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD), and THz reception is implemented based on photoconductive sampling by using a photoconductive antenna (PCA). We analyze the performance in terms of bandwidth and the features of the THz pulses. A 15 dB bandwidth of 1 THz confirms that this THz impulse system has a great potential of supporting ultrafast data rates, eventually for Terabit wireless communication era.

Abstract:Millimeter-Wave-based radar has gained attention in recent years for automotive and object detection applications. Several new applications are also emerging which employ mm-Wave radar techniques to construct short range mm-Wave 3D imaging systems for security screening and biomedical applications. At present, these types of 3D mm-Wave imagers have only been demonstrated in lll-V technology, as CMOS-based radar suffers several range and resolution limitations due to limited output power and linearity.Most CMOS mm-Wave radar systems used in automotive applications are based on Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) ranging techniques in which the carrier is swept to produce a frequency offset at the receiver output proportional to the round-trip distance between the radar and target. While FMCW is an excellent approach for accurate ranging, its implementation becomes particularly difficult at high frequencies as the resolution is heavily dependent on sweep linearity and the high RF front-end performance required to support the wideband swept carrier. For 3D mm-Wave imaging applications, this high operating frequency is indispensable as the attainable spatial (XY) resolution is fundamentally limited by the wavelength of the imaging system. Higher frequency also helps relax focusing lens requirements, as the optical diffraction limit is set by the ratio of the radar wavelength over the lens aperture size.

Abstract:Integrating sensing function is becoming a key feature in the sixth generation (6G) radio access network. In this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel method that integrates high-resolution radar and long-distance communication in terahertz (THz) band. The THz communication and linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals were simultaneously generated with the aid of photonics technology. To support long-distance THz communication, a pair of special lenses was utilized. A net rate of 38.1 Gbits was achieved after 50 m of wireless transmission. Meanwhile, a range resolution of 1.58 cm was achieved for the THz radar. Two targets at distances of 10 and 35 cm from the reference position were successfully detected, and the distance measurement error was within the range of centimeters. This is an effective method of incorporating high-resolution radar sensing and long-distance communication functions system in the THz band, which may be beneficial in several potential applications of 6G in the future.
